  • Keanu Reeves ended a 2019 late-night interview with a single sentence about death: “I know that the ones who love us will miss us.” The studio audience reacted emotionally, and host Stephen Colbert shook his hand before closing the show.

Reeves, a Canadian actor and musician, was born in Beirut on the 2nd of September 1964. His screen career now spans four decades. In 2020, The New York Times placed him at number four on its list of the 25 greatest actors of the 21st century. In 2022, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The chapters ahead follow his unsettled upbringing, the films that built and strained his career, and the reputation he has earned away from the cameras. They also ask why audiences keep rooting for him.

  • Patricia Taylor, an English costume designer and performer from Essex, was working in Beirut when she met Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr., an American from Hawaii. His own heritage is Native Hawaiian, Chinese, English and Portuguese. They divorced in 1966, when their son was young, and Keanu last saw his father on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i at the age of thirteen.

Sydney, Australia, became the family's next home, followed by New York City. There, in 1970, Patricia married the Broadway and Hollywood director Paul Aaron. The couple moved on to Toronto and divorced in 1971. Aaron stayed close to the boy, offered advice, and recommended him for a job at the Hedgerow Theatre in Pennsylvania. At nine, Reeves took part in a theatre production of Damn Yankees.

Patricia's 1976 marriage to the rock music promoter Robert Miller ended in divorce in 1980. Keanu and his sisters grew up mainly in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood, with a nanny often looking after them. He watched British comedies such as The Two Ronnies, and his mother taught him English manners that he still keeps. His grandmother's Chinese heritage filled the household with Chinese art, furniture and cooking.

The Etobicoke School of the Arts expelled Reeves, one of four high schools he attended. He called himself a “private kid” and said he was “just a little too rambunctious and shot my mouth off once too often.” He also has dyslexia, and he once said, “Because I had trouble reading, I wasn't a good student.”

Hockey offered a different path at De La Salle College, where Reeves was a successful goalkeeper. He hoped to reach the Canadian Olympic team and was once considered an OHL prospect, until injury ended that plan. At fifteen he decided to become an actor. He then moved to Avondale Secondary Alternative School, which let him study while working, and he dropped out at seventeen. Through his American stepfather he obtained a green card, and he moved to Los Angeles three years later. He still holds only Canadian citizenship. Waiting for him there were agents who thought his first name was a problem.

  • In 1984, Reeves reported for the CBC youth program Going Great and made his acting debut in an episode of Hangin' In. A Coca-Cola commercial in 1983 and the National Film Board short One Step Away came around the same time. In 1985 he played Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet at the Leah Posluns Theatre in North York, Ontario.

Agents in the mid-1980s told him that Keanu was “too ethnic.” For a short time he auditioned as “K. C.” or “Casey” Reeves before returning to his own name.

Youngblood, released in 1986, gave him his first feature role, as a goalkeeper. River's Edge, a crime drama loosely based on a 1981 murder, premiered the same year at the Toronto International Film Festival. Janet Maslin of The New York Times found the young cast “natural and credible” and Reeves “affecting and sympathetic.”

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, in 1989, cast him as a slacker who travels through time with a friend, played by Alex Winter, to collect historical figures for a school presentation. It grossed $40.5 million worldwide, and Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 79% approval rating. A sequel, Bogus Journey, followed in 1991.

That same year marked a turn toward adult parts. In My Own Private Idaho, written by Gus Van Sant and loosely based on Shakespeare's Henry plays, Reeves played a street hustler opposite River Phoenix. It premiered at the 48th Venice International Film Festival. Point Break followed, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, with Reeves as an undercover FBI agent chasing a gang of bank robbers. He and his co-stars took surfing lessons from the professional Dennis Jarvis in Hawaii, and Reeves had never surfed before. The film earned $83.5 million.

Bram Stoker's Dracula, in 1992, placed him in Francis Ford Coppola's Gothic horror as Jonathan Harker, beside Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins. The film grossed $215.8 million worldwide, but Reeves's English accent drew ridicule. In a 2015 interview, Coppola said, “Reeves tried so hard … He wanted to do it perfectly and in trying to do it perfectly it came off as stilted.”

Speed, released on the 10th of June 1994, cast him as police officer Jack Traven, who must keep a bus above 50 mph to stop it exploding. Jan de Bont, making his directorial debut, chose Reeves after being impressed by Point Break. Reeves shaved his head and spent two months in the gym. During production, his friend River Phoenix died, and the schedule was adjusted so Reeves could mourn. The film grossed $350 million on a $30 million budget. Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune called Reeves “absolutely charismatic,” and the film won two Academy Awards in 1995, for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound.

  • Johnny Mnemonic, from 1995, adapted a 1981 short story by William Gibson and was directed by the artist Robert Longo. Reeves played a courier with a cybernetic brain implant, in a story set in 2021. Reviews were mostly negative, and critics thought he was “woefully miscast.” Roger Ebert still granted the film “a kind of idiotic grandeur.”

That same year, Reeves turned to the stage and played Prince Hamlet at the Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg. Roger Lewis of The Sunday Times ranked him among the top three Hamlets he had seen, “for a simple reason: he is Hamlet.”

Chain Reaction, in 1996, holds a 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Feeling Minnesota, with Vincent D'Onofrio and Cameron Diaz, was dismissed as “shoddily assembled, and fundamentally miscast.” The Last Time I Committed Suicide, based on a 1950 letter from Neal Cassady to Jack Kerouac, split critics. Paul Tatara of CNN called Reeves “void of talent,” while Empire magazine said he gave “the nearest thing to a performance in his career.”

In 1997, Reeves turned down Speed 2: Cruise Control despite an offer of a $12 million salary. By his account, 20th Century Fox then cut ties with him for a decade. The Devil's Advocate, that same year, paired him with Al Pacino and Charlize Theron as a young lawyer who discovers his New York firm is owned by a devil. Reeves accepted a pay cut of several million dollars so the studio could afford Pacino. Critic James Berardinelli found the film “highly enjoyable” and Reeves's work “a solid job.” Waiting just ahead was a script from the Wachowskis.

  • Thomas Anderson, a computer programmer who hacks under the alias “Neo,” discovers that humanity lives inside a simulated reality built by intelligent machines. Reeves played him in The Matrix in 1999, a film written and directed by the Wachowskis. He prepared by reading Kevin Kelly's Out of Control and Dylan Evans's ideas on evolutionary psychology. The principal cast spent months training with the martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping.

The film was a box office success, and several critics ranked it among the best science fiction films ever made. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times called it a “wildly cinematic futuristic thriller.” Maslin praised Reeves as a “strikingly chic Prada model of an action hero.” It won Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

Rather than chase another blockbuster, Reeves chose the 2000 sports comedy The Replacements and took a pay cut so Gene Hackman could co-star. He also appeared in The Watcher, playing a serial killer who stalks a retired FBI agent, though he said he did not want to. A friend, he said, forged his signature on a contract. He could not prove it, and he acted in the film to avoid legal action. Critics panned it.

The sequels arrived in 2003. The Matrix Reloaded in May and The Matrix Revolutions in November were shot back-to-back, mainly at Fox Studios in Australia. Reloaded grossed $739 million worldwide. Revolutions met a mixed reception and grossed $427 million. For reprising Neo, Reeves was the highest-paid actor for a single production until 2016. That year, The Hollywood Reporter calculated that the franchise had earned him $250 million.

A rumour held that Reeves gave between $35 million and $125 million of his Matrix earnings to the effects and makeup crews. The truth is smaller. He gave up his contractual share of the sequels' profits in exchange for a larger special effects budget. On set, he heard that a crew member was having family trouble and gave him $20,000. For the twelve-person stunt team on Reloaded, he bought each member a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He said he wanted “to give a bigger thank-you to all these guys who helped me make this.”

Neo called him back in December 2021 for The Matrix Resurrections, with Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Trinity. It was a box office disappointment.

  • Constantine, in 2005, cast Reeves as John Constantine, an occult detective who can perceive and talk to half-angels and half-demons. It grossed $230 million on a $100 million budget, a respectable hit with mixed-to-positive reviews. That year he also appeared in Thumbsucker, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

In 2006, Richard Linklater's animated A Scanner Darkly, based on a 1977 novel by Philip K. Dick, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Reeves played the undercover agent Bob Arctor in a dystopia of heavy police surveillance. It failed at the box office but won generally favourable reviews. The Lake House then reunited him with Sandra Bullock. Mark Kermode of The Guardian joked, “The last time Bullock and Reeves were together on screen the result was Speed. This should have been entitled Stop.”

Street Kings, in 2008, earned a moderate $66 million worldwide. In The Day the Earth Stood Still, a loose adaptation of a 1951 film, he played the alien Klaatu. Critics were largely unimpressed by both.

In 2011, Reeves wrote an adult picture book, Ode to Happiness, with illustrations by Alexandra Grant. A year later he co-produced and appeared in Side by Side, a documentary comparing digital and photochemical filmmaking. For it he interviewed James Cameron, Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan.

Man of Tai Chi, in 2013, was Reeves's own directorial debut. The multilingual film follows a young man drawn into an underground fight club and was partly inspired by his friend Tiger Chen. Shooting took place in China and Hong Kong, with Yuen Woo-ping assisting. John Woo praised it. At the box office it earned only $5.5 million against a $25 million budget. The fantasy 47 Ronin, the same year, also flopped.

John Wick, in 2014, changed that run of luck. Directed by Chad Stahelski, it cast Reeves as a retired hitman seeking vengeance and was filmed around New York City. It reached American cinemas on the 24th of October and grossed $86 million worldwide. Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times wrote that he is “always more comfortable in roles that demand cool over hot, attitude over emotion.”

Chapter 2, in 2017, grossed $171.5 million, more than its predecessor. Chapter 3, subtitled Parabellum, arrived in 2019 with Halle Berry among the new cast. Chapter 4, in 2023, earned critical acclaim, with several reviewers placing it among the greatest action films ever made.

Toy Story 4, in 2019, gave him the voice of Duke Caboom. In 2020 he played Johnny Silverhand in the video game Cyberpunk 2077, and he returned for its expansion Phantom Liberty in 2023. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reached cinemas on the 20th of December 2024 with Reeves voicing Shadow the Hedgehog. In September 2025 he made his Broadway debut in Waiting for Godot, directed by Jamie Lloyd, opposite his Bill & Ted co-star Alex Winter.

  • Dogstar took shape in 1991, when Reeves formed the alternative rock band with Robert Mailhouse, Gregg Miller and Bret Domrose. He played bass. The band released two albums in its first decade, Our Little Visionary in 1996 and Happy Ending in 2000. By 2002 it had disbanded. Reeves then spent a year in Becky, a band founded by Mailhouse, and quit in 2005, citing a lack of interest in a serious music career.

The pandemic revived Dogstar. Recording began at the start of COVID-19 and produced Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees in 2023. After a first performance in 20 years at the BottleRock Napa Valley festival, the band set off on a 25-date tour of North America and Japan, opening on the 10th of August in Hermosa Beach, California. A fourth album, All In Now, came out on the 29th of May 2026.

BRZRKR, a comic series Reeves co-wrote, ran in three volumes from March 2021 to October 2023. Issue #1 sold over 615,000 copies, the top-selling single issue since Star Wars #1 in 2015. On the 23rd of July 2024 he published a novel version, The Book of Elsewhere, written with China Miéville. A Netflix film adaptation, written by Mattson Tomlin, is in development, with Reeves open to directing. An anime series from Production I.G is planned to follow.

In 2011, Reeves, an avid motorcyclist, co-founded ARCH Motorcycle Company with Gard Hollinger to build custom bikes. Riding has cost him. In 1988 he was injured in a crash in Topanga and had to undergo a splenectomy. In 1996 he was hurt again when he swerved to avoid a car pulling out from the curb. In October 2024 he made his motorsport debut in the Toyota GR Cup North America at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, finishing 25th and 24th in the two races.

His business partners include Stephen Hamel, with whom he co-founded the production company Company Films. In 2017 he joined Jessica Fleischmann and Alexandra Grant to found the book publisher X Artists' Books. His second book with Grant is Shadows, for which he supplied text to her photographs and art.

When his sister battled leukemia, Reeves founded a private cancer foundation that aids children's hospitals and funds research. He told an interviewer in 2009 that he does not like to attach his name to it. In June 2020 he volunteered for Camp Rainbow Gold, an Idaho children's cancer charity. He once said, “Money is the last thing I think about. I could live on what I have already made for the next few centuries.”

In March 2023, a training uniform signed by Reeves, Stahelski and the jiu-jitsu instructor Dave Camarillo was auctioned for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. After John Wick: Chapter 4, Reeves gave his personal stunt team engraved Rolex Submariner watches. He bought the larger stunt crews T-shirts showing how many times each extra had “died” in the film. In 2024 he signed a one-day contract with the Windsor Spitfires, and the items he signed were auctioned for the Canadian Mental Health Association of Windsor-Essex.

  • In 1998, Reeves met Jennifer Syme, an assistant to the director David Lynch, at a party thrown for Dogstar. On the 24th of December 1999, Syme gave birth, eight months into her pregnancy, to the couple's stillborn daughter. They separated several weeks later but reconciled. Syme died on the 2nd of April 2001, when her vehicle collided with parked cars on Cahuenga Boulevard in Los Angeles. Reeves was a pallbearer, and she was buried beside their daughter. He was due to film the Matrix sequels the following spring and, according to Bret Domrose, sought “peace and time.”

Winona Ryder, his Dracula co-star, remains a close friend. After filming a wedding scene with a Romanian priest, they still call each other “husband and wife” in private. In 2009, Reeves met the artist Alexandra Grant at a dinner party. They went on to make books together and made their relationship public in November 2019.

Little Buddha, in 1993, left a lasting mark on him. Reeves said that playing an innocent prince who first glimpses old age, sickness and death hit him, adding, “That lesson has never left me.” He does not formally practise Buddhism, but he says it taught him about feelings, impermanence and understanding other people. Of his beliefs in general he says they are “personal and private,” though he calls himself “very spiritual.” In 2024 he said, “I'm thinking about death all the time. That's a good thing.” Science communicator Hank Green ended his comedy special about fighting Hodgkin's lymphoma with a line inspired by Reeves's late-night answer: “Either way, what comes next is going to be beautiful.”

In a 2005 Time article, Lev Grossman called Reeves “Hollywood's ultimate introvert.” Erwin Stoff, his agent and manager since Reeves was sixteen, calls him “a really private person.” After a year of shooting Constantine with him, Shia LaBeouf said he did not really know him. Laurence Fishburne said in 2023 that Reeves is “much kinder than people say he is.” Aziz Ansari joked that Reeves is “actually an angel” who has been pretending to be human for his other roles.

In 2010, photographs of Reeves sitting glumly on a park bench became the “Sad Keanu” meme, and a fan page declared the 15th of June “Cheer-up Keanu Day.” Reeves later said, “Man, I was eating a sandwich.” In March 2019, his United Airlines flight to Burbank was grounded in Bakersfield. He boarded a travel van with the other passengers, read them fun facts about the town from his phone, and shared 1950s country music he found on YouTube. In July 2019, he signed a banner reading “You're Breathtaking” at a house he passed while filming Bill & Ted Face the Music.

A popular meme claims that Reeves is secretly immortal and has lived as figures such as Charlemagne. When Jimmy Fallon asked about it in 2017, Reeves said he shares a likeness with Charlemagne in the eyes, nose, mustache, beard, cheekbones and forehead. In 2022, his recitation of the Beat poem “Pull My Daisy” at a benefit for Tibet House US drew a negative reaction on Chinese social media, and his films were banned from streaming platforms there, including iQiyi, Tencent Video and Youku. In 2023, a lipopeptide, a substance deadly to fungi, was named keanumycin in his honour.
