  • Liam Payne, the English singer and songwriter who lived from 1993 to 2024, once performed in front of 26,000 people at a Wolverhampton Wanderers football match. He was still a child, and almost nobody beyond his home area knew his name. That early taste of a huge audience hints at where his life was heading. He would become one of five young men in One Direction, one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. He would also try to make a name for himself alone. This documentary follows several questions. How did a boy who spent years in and out of hospital become a pop star? What did he build as a writer, a solo artist and a giver of money and time? And what did the circumstances of his death in a hotel abroad say about fame and the way the world responded to it?

  • Liam James Payne was born on the 29th of August 1993 at New Cross Hospital, in the Heath Town district of Wolverhampton. His mother Karen was an infant nurse and his father Geoff was a fitter. He had two older sisters, Nicola and Ruth.

Arriving three weeks early, Payne was a sickly baby who fell ill often. Until he turned four, doctors ran regular tests because one of his kidneys was scarred and not working properly. In the book Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction he recalled: "I was always in hospital having tests done but they couldn't find out what was wrong. They discovered that one of my kidneys wasn't working properly and it had scarred. I had to have 32 injections in my arm in the morning and evening to try and make me better."

Cross-country running became his passion at school, and he joined the Wolverhampton & Bilston Athletics Club to pursue it. At the age of 12 he started boxing lessons, because older students at his secondary school were bullying him.

That same year he joined the Pink Productions Theatre Company, where he played Tony Manero from Saturday Night Fever. He completed 11 GCSEs at St Peter's Collegiate School, which is now St Peter's Collegiate Academy. He then studied music technology at City of Wolverhampton College. His first audition for The X Factor came while he was still a schoolboy.

  • Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon" carried Payne through the first round of the fifth series of The X Factor in 2008. He was 14. The judges were Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh.

He was cut at the boot camp stage, but Cowell changed his mind and invited him back for the judges' houses round. There Payne was eliminated again. Cowell encouraged him to "come back in two years".

He did exactly that for the seventh series in 2010. This time the panel was Cowell, Cole, Walsh and guest judge Natalie Imbruglia, and Payne sang Michael Bublé's version of "Cry Me a River". He advanced but never reached the "Boys" category at judges' houses. At boot camp, however, he was grouped with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. Together they became the five-piece band One Direction, entered in the "Groups" category. They were the last act eliminated and finished third.

In January 2011 the band signed to Simon Cowell's Syco Entertainment. Their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" reached number one in the UK later that year. The first album, Up All Night, included three songs co-written by Payne and debuted at number one in the United States. Take Me Home in 2012, Midnight Memories in 2013, Four in 2014 and Made in the A.M. in 2015 each debuted at number one in the UK.

Midnight Memories was the best-selling album in the world in 2013. Its Where We Are Tour was the highest-grossing tour of 2014. After Four, One Direction became the only group in the 58-year history of the Billboard 200 albums chart to open with four consecutive number one debuts.

In March 2015 Zayn Malik left the group, and Payne was given the bulk of Malik's vocal parts. The band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016 after finishing promotion for Made in the A.M. By then One Direction had sold 70 million records worldwide, including 7.6 million albums and 26 million singles in the US. Their trophy shelf held seven Brit Awards, seven American Music Awards, six Billboard Music Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards. Meanwhile Payne had been quietly stacking up writing credits.

  • More than 30 writing credits on One Direction's last three albums made Payne a prolific co-writer, second only to Louis Tomlinson. On the third and fourth albums he was credited on more than half of the songs. The two writers often worked together. Tomlinson was known for lyrics, while Payne had a gift for melody.

In a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Payne named "Better Than Words" and "What a Feeling" as the two tracks he was proudest of. The first was built from the titles of other songs. He and Tomlinson wrote the second with Fleetwood Mac in mind. The two of them were also the band's top earners.

Pharrell Williams topped Payne's list of influences, which also named Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake and Usher. Payne said: "The person who has inspired me most is Pharrell Williams who I worked with a while back. I got talking to his producer recently and asked him what Pharrell was like when he was younger, and he said to me that when he was my age he couldn't press a note on a keyboard. And that was amazing to me because at 22 I thought I was too old to learn guitar." He sang pop and R&B and ventured into electronic music. Rock reached him through Linkin Park's album Hybrid Theory, and he called "In the End" one of the most important songs of his life.

In 2014 Payne began producing under the names "Big Payno" and "Payno". With the producers AfterHrs he remixed several tracks, including Cheryl's "I Don't Care". He also co-wrote Cheryl's "I Won't Break", from her album Only Human, and in 2015 co-wrote "The Night We Met" for the Irish band Hometown.

In August 2014 he founded Hampton Music Limited and became its director. He also served as a director of the production company One Mode Productions Limited. Hampton Music was the publishing company under which his solo projects would later appear.

  • A leaked track called "You", by Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J, gave Payne his first solo appearance in early 2016. It came from an unreleased mixtape. In October 2016 it was announced that he had signed with Republic Records.

His debut solo single "Strip That Down", featuring Quavo and co-written with Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac, came out on the 19th of May 2017. It reached number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number three in the UK. It was certified double platinum in the UK and triple platinum in the US. Two more UK top 30 singles followed: "Get Low", with Zedd, certified silver, and "Bedroom Floor", certified gold.

In January 2018 Payne teamed up with Rita Ora on "For You", a single from the soundtrack of the film Fifty Shades Freed. It reached the top ten in several countries. Brazil certified it diamond and the UK platinum, and thirteen more countries gave it gold or platinum status. In April 2018 he released "Familiar" with J Balvin, which peaked at number 14 in the UK and went platinum. On the 30th of March 2018 he had played a free concert at Global Village 2018 in Dubai for more than 100,000 people.

A debut album had been announced for the 14th of September 2018, but Payne delayed it to keep working. Instead came the EP First Time on the 24th of August 2018, with the single "First Time" featuring French Montana. On the 5th of October 2018 he released "Polaroid" with Jonas Blue and Lennon Stella, which peaked at number 12 in the UK and went platinum.

Payne released "Stack It Up" with A Boogie wit da Hoodie on the 18th of September 2019. His debut album LP1 followed on the 6th of December 2019, with "All I Want (For Christmas)" as its sixth single. It entered at number 17 on the UK Albums Chart and number 111 on the Billboard 200. The UK certified it gold and Canada platinum. His only solo album, it capped a stretch in which Payne sold over 18 million singles and 2.4 million albums and drew 3.9 billion streams in his first three solo years.

In April 2020 he began a weekly YouTube series, and that July he announced The LP Show, a livestream series that opened with a live-streamed concert. On the 9th of October 2020 he released the EP Midnight Hour with the producer Alesso. On the 30th of October 2020 he put out the Christmas single "Naughty List" with Dixie D'Amelio. In August 2021 came "Sunshine", featured in the film Ron's Gone Wrong, in which he also gave a cameo voice performance.

Fashion became part of the picture too. In May 2019 the German label Hugo Boss named him its first global brand ambassador. The first Hugo x Liam Payne capsule collection was shown at Berlin Fashion Week in July 2020. It was mostly menswear, with polo shirts, T-shirts, shorts, hoodies, sweatpants and one pair of sneakers. In January 2020 he starred in the campaign for the Hugo Now fragrance.

In June 2021 he launched a non-fungible token art collection called "Lonely Bug". On the 25th of January 2022 he opened a dedicated Twitter account, @PaynoETH, just for that subject.

In May 2023 he announced that a second album was underway. A first solo tour was planned, with Latin American dates set for September 2023. It was postponed after he was hospitalised in August with a kidney infection. On the 1st of March 2024 he returned to music with the single "Teardrops", co-written with NSYNC member JC Chasez. It did not chart on release. Away from the studio, he gave money and time in ways he preferred to keep quiet.

  • Raising over £2 million for Comic Relief in 2013 was one of One Direction's biggest charity efforts. Part of it came from the charity single "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)". Film of the band's trip to Ghana, where they volunteered at a children's hospital, helped too. The group also backed BBC's Children in Need, and joined Action/2015 to launch the "Action 1D" campaign on global issues.

UNICEF was a cause Payne championed. He joined Andy Murray, Jack Whitehall and Clare Balding for UNICEF UK's Children in Danger Summer Disease Appeal. With the motorsport figure Eddie Jordan he supported the charity CLIC Sargent. Alongside Harry Styles he became an ambassador for the youth cancer charity Trekstock. His original 2013 campaign for Trekstock raised $784,198, and a 2015 campaign added $211,237. He was also an ambassador for the Global Goals campaign. In 2015 he helped promote a £6 million youth project in Wolverhampton called The Youth Zone.

A charity ball for Believe in Magic, an organisation supporting terminally ill children, was co-hosted by Payne and Louis Tomlinson. Tomlinson paid £50,000 to have Payne's face painted. Between them they donated over £5 million at the event. In 2018 the two filmed an episode of Gogglebox for Stand Up to Cancer.

Food security was a cause close to him. From the spring of 2020 he supported the Trussell Trust and its network of UK food banks, funding more than 360,000 meals during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said: "I'm glad to be playing my small part as we work towards a future in which nobody needs a food bank." He gave £80,000 and also volunteered in person at Euston Food Bank and Food for All in Holborn. None of that was revealed until after his death. Pete O'Grady, director of Food for All, said Payne "didn't want anyone to make a thing about it. He let nobody know of his generosity".

Soccer Aid, UNICEF's charity football match, drew him in as well. He captained the English team in 2022 and returned in 2023. In the month before his death he donated thousands of pounds to various GoFundMe pages. In a Snapchat video he explained: "I've been going on night by night by night, trying to finish off people's donations so that they can get the operations they need."

  • Danielle Peazer, a dancer on The X Factor, was Payne's first public relationship. They began dating in 2010, when he was 17 and she was 22, and broke up in 2013. From 2013 to 2015 he dated a childhood friend, Sophia Smith.

In late 2015 he began dating the singer Cheryl, whom he had first met at 14 when she judged his first X Factor audition. She was a judge again when he reapplied at 16, and she was 26. Their son was born on the 22nd of March 2017. The relationship ended in 2018, but the two stayed close. They stated together on social media that they "still have so much love for each other as a family." In 2020 Payne moved to Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire to live near his son. Before that he had lived with Cheryl in nearby Chalfont St Peter.

The model Maya Henry became his partner in 2019, and they got engaged in August 2020. By June 2021 they had separated. They reunited that year and were engaged again, then ended the engagement for a second time in May 2022. From October 2022 he was in a relationship with the influencer Kate Cassidy.

His net worth was estimated at £47 million in 2020. He owned homes in Malibu, California, and in Surrey, and listed them for sale in early 2020 and 2021 respectively. He supported the football club West Bromwich Albion.

In May 2019, after Alabama passed anti-abortion legislation, Payne said he was pro-choice. He argued that men "never have to go through that so how can we even comment or decide what women should or shouldn't go through." In May 2020 he voiced support for Black Lives Matter, urged fans to educate themselves and donate, and attended protests in London.

Alcohol was the struggle he spoke about most openly. He said it began at the peak of One Direction's success, describing being locked in hotel rooms with a mini-bar between gigs. In May 2023 he said he had been sober for over three months. That July he shared a video describing 100 days in a rehab facility in Louisiana.

On the 1st of June 2022 he was interviewed by Logan Paul for a podcast while intoxicated. He claimed that One Direction began with a promise from Simon Cowell, who had purportedly pledged to "make it work" if Payne returned to the show. He also spoke about Zayn Malik, saying: "There's many reasons why I dislike Zayn and there's many reasons why I'll always, always be on his side". He later clarified his remarks on Malik and apologised.

  • Early in October 2024, Payne and Kate Cassidy travelled to Argentina. He needed to renew his US O visa at the American embassy in Buenos Aires, and they planned to see Niall Horan's concert at the city's Movistar Arena. Cassidy flew home to Florida on the 14th of October. Payne stayed behind.

On the 16th of October 2024 the manager of the CasaSur hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood called emergency services. He described "an aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol" and warned that the room had a balcony. Minutes after help arrived, Payne fell from the third-floor balcony. His death at 31 was confirmed at 5:11 p.m.

Alberto Crescenti, director of Buenos Aires' public emergency medical service, put the height at about 13 to 14 metres. He described "very serious injuries incompatible with life". Crescenti declined to say whether the death was a suicide or an accident. A Buenos Aires Security Ministry spokesman said Payne "had jumped", but the office did not answer follow-up questions. Forensic experts later said Payne "did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself" and could have fallen unconscious. Journalist Paula Varela, citing unreleased CCTV footage, said he fainted on the balcony and fell accidentally.

The post-mortem found 25 injuries from the fall and no signs of a fight, and Payne was alone in the room. On the 22nd of October the prosecutor's office denied that any toxicology details had been released. The next night police raided the hotel and seized items including computers.

On the 7th of November prosecutors reported traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescribed antidepressant. The same day three people were charged. They were a companion of Payne, a hotel employee and a drug dealer. On the 30th of December 2024 a judge charged five people. Two were held for supplying drugs. Three more faced manslaughter charges, which were dropped on the 20th of February 2025. A UK inquest opening on the 8th of January 2025 gave the cause of death as polytrauma.

His body was first buried at the Cementerio Británico in Buenos Aires and flown back to the UK on the 6th of November. The funeral took place on the 20th of November at Saint Mary's Church in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

His family said they were "heartbroken". Cheryl asked for dignity, fearing that their son might one day read the "abhorrent reports and media exploitation". His bandmates issued a joint statement, and Zayn Malik postponed the US leg of his Stairway to the Sky Tour. Robbie Williams pleaded for compassion: "We don't know what's going on in people's lives". Sharon Osbourne, Rebecca Ferguson and Bruce Springsteen raised concerns about the music industry and young fame. UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer spoke of One Direction's "huge impact on many millions of fans around the world". Filming of Britain's Got Talent auditions was suspended out of respect.

A fan began a petition for "Liam's Law" on the 18th of October, to guarantee access to mental health professionals, regular checks and adequate rest for artists. Over 68,000 people signed it within five days.

On the 25th of October all five One Direction albums returned to the UK top 40, led by Midnight Memories at number 13. LP1 re-entered at number 62. "Night Changes" entered the singles chart at number six, beating its earlier peak of 7. "Teardrops" entered at number 85, its first appearance on the chart.

Coverage drew criticism. The website TMZ published cropped photographs of Payne's body, then removed them after fans and public figures objected. Michael Buerk, a former BBC newsreader, accused the corporation of excessive coverage and was himself criticised for calling Payne a "drugged up, faded, boy band singer".

Fans gathered outside the Buenos Aires hotel, lit candles and applauded as the van carrying his body left. Vigils followed in Mexico City, Copenhagen and Wolverhampton, and in January 2025 a plaque in his memory was installed at Clevedon Pier. Up to 1,000 people attended a fan memorial in Hyde Park on the 20th of October. At the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards, Rita Ora called him "one of the kindest people that she knew". In July 2025 Payne appeared posthumously as a guest judge on the Netflix series Building the Band.
