  • Usher, the American singer, songwriter, dancer and actor, drew 123 million viewers within the United States to his Super Bowl LVIII halftime show in 2024. Very few performers ever stand in front of a crowd that size. Fewer still get there by way of a path as bumpy as his. Where did that voice come from, and who first heard it? What nearly ended his career before he turned sixteen? And what did he do with the years when he was, for a time, the sound of pop radio? The answers begin with a boy, a church choir and a mother who refused to let a bad break stop him.

  • Usher Raymond IV was born on the 14th of October 1978 in Dallas, Texas, but he spent most of his childhood in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His parents were Jonnetta Patton, born O'Neal, and Usher Raymond III. His father left the family when Usher was one year old. Shortly before the elder Usher died in January 2008, the two reconciled and the father apologized for his absence. The singer once called that time "the most valuable time" they shared together. He also has a younger half-brother, James Lackey, from his mother's marriage to Terry Patton.

At nine, on his mother's direction, Usher joined the youth choir at a church in Chattanooga. There his grandmother first noticed that he could sing. She did not think he could make a living at it until he joined a singing group. His family then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, believing a bigger city offered more chances to showcase him. Atlanta was also a friendlier place for beginning singers. He attended North Springs High School there.

At age 12, Usher became one of five members of NuBeginning, a local R&B group organized by promoter Darryl Wheeler. The other four were Anthony Byrd, Adrian Johnson, Reginald McKibbon and Charles Yarbrough. The group recorded ten songs in 1991. They appeared on a self-titled album released in 1993, which produced a single called "A Mother's Luv". At first the record was sold only regionally and by mail order. Hip-O Records re-released it nationally in April 2002 as NuBeginning Featuring Usher Raymond IV. It stayed the group's only album.

Patton decided her son was better off as a solo artist and pulled him out at age 13. She later described his time with the group as "a bad experience". Usher worried that this might end his musical dreams. Then his mother told him "your world is only beginning" and began planning a future without the group.

At 13 he also met A.J. Alexander at a talent show in Atlanta. Alexander was then Bobby Brown's bodyguard. He took Usher around to perform in parking lots and at talent shows. He also invited Bryant Reid, an A&R representative from LaFace Records, to watch Usher on the television talent show Star Search. Reid then arranged an audition with L.A. Reid, a co-founder of the label. Usher sang the Boyz II Men song "End of the Road", and Reid signed him on the spot. Patton left her job as a medical technician to manage her son. His first solo recording, "Call Me a Mack", was made for the soundtrack of the 1993 film Poetic Justice.

  • L.A. Reid came close to dropping Usher from LaFace Records. While Usher was preparing his solo debut, he lost his voice. He was going through puberty and struggled to adjust his vocals. Reid grew skeptical and put the album on hold. Usher pleaded with the label to keep him, and it did.

Reid still did not know what to do with him. In the spring of 1994 he sent Usher to New York City to live with record executive Sean Combs. The purpose was to "attend" what Reid called "Flavor Camp". Usher quickly adapted to the lavish lifestyle at Combs's home. Yet he told Rolling Stone that this period held the "hardest days" of his life. He said he had to toughen up and work things out for himself in New York.

LaFace released Usher's self-titled debut album on the 30th of August 1994, with Combs as co-executive producer. Usher was 15. The album peaked at number twenty-five on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Three singles accompanied it: "Can U Get wit It", "Think of You" and "The Many Ways". By December 2008 it had sold over 500,000 copies. It also drew backlash. A 15-year-old was singing about sex, and the public had trouble believing it. Because sales fell short of expectations, LaFace again had doubts about signing him.

Patton took control of his career in the summer of 1995 and put him into more talent shows. That built a larger fan base and gave L.A. Reid more confidence. After graduating from high school, Usher kept sharpening his skills as a stage performer and laid the groundwork for his second album. He sang on "Let's Straighten It Out", a 1995 duet with fellow Atlanta teen artist Monica. He appeared on "Dreamin'", from LaFace's 1996 Olympic benefit album Rhythm of the Games. He also featured on "I Swear I'm In Love", from the soundtrack to the 1996 film Kazaam. A friendship with producer Jermaine Dupri would shape what came next.

  • My Way arrived on the 16th of September 1997. Usher co-wrote and produced several of its tracks with Dupri. The lead single, "You Make Me Wanna...", reached number one in the United Kingdom, his first chart-topping record there. It also became his first gold and platinum single in the United States. The second single, "Nice & Slow", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1998. That was his first US number-one single. The RIAA certified it platinum the following month. The album itself went seven-time platinum in the United States. "You Make Me Wanna..." won Best Male R&B/Soul Single at the 1999 Soul Train Music Awards.

Touring filled the closing months of 1997. Usher joined Puffy's No Way Out tour, played dates with Mary J. Blige and took the opening spot on Janet Jackson's The Velvet Rope Tour. His first concert album, Live, came out in 1999 and went gold in the United States. Guests included Lil' Kim, Jagged Edge, Trey Lorenz, Shanice, Twista and Manuel Seal.

Acting came next. Usher made his debut on the UPN series Moesha, which led to a recurring role. That in turn brought his first film part, in The Faculty in 1998. He was then cast in the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. He completed She's All That and took his first starring role in Light It Up. He also appeared in the Disney television movie Geppetto.

His third album was first titled All About U and was expected in early 2001. Its first single, "Pop Ya Collar", came out in late 2000. It became a number two hit in the UK but underperformed in the United States. Then select tracks leaked to radio and the Internet, so the album was pushed back and retooled. LaFace also went dormant, and most of its artists, Usher included, moved to its parent company, Arista Records. The renamed album, 8701, came out on the 7th of August 2001, written 8.7.01. "U Remind Me" and "U Got It Bad" topped the Hot 100 for four and six weeks. The album sold eight million copies and went five-time platinum in the United States. Usher also appeared in the 2001 film Texas Rangers.

In February 2002 he won a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for "U Remind Me". The next year he won the same award for "U Don't Have to Call". That made him the only artist besides Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder to win it consecutively. In the summer of 2002 he lent vocals to Combs's "I Need a Girl (Part One)". In November that year he appeared on several television series. On American Dreams he portrayed Marvin Gaye.

  • Confessions was released on the 23rd of March 2004, just as its first single, "Yeah!", entered its sixth week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was also in its fifth week on top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. The album sold nearly 1.1 million units in its first week. That was the highest first-week figure ever scanned for a male R&B artist and the seventh best in the history of Nielsen SoundScan.

The sales kept climbing. Confessions has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, with over 14 million in the United States. That earned it a Diamond certification from the RIAA. The second and third singles, "Burn" and "Confessions Part II", also topped the Hot 100, with "Burn" holding the top spot for eight weeks. In September 2004, "My Boo", a duet with Alicia Keys, became the album's fourth number one. Usher was the first artist to top the Hot 100 Airplay chart with four consecutive number-one singles. The final single, "Caught Up", peaked at number eight in December.

The records that followed were unusual. On the 2004 Year-End Hot 100, "Yeah!" finished first and "Burn" second. He was the first act to claim the top two positions since The Beatles in 1964. He also spent 28 weeks at number one in 2004 alone, then a record for the most cumulative weeks on top in a calendar year.

The awards piled up as well. Confessions earned four American Music Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards and three World Music Awards. At the 47th Grammy Awards in 2005 he won three trophies. One was for R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals, for "My Boo", shared with Keys. Another was Rap/Sung Collaboration, for "Yeah!". The third was Contemporary R&B Album, for Confessions. At the 2004 Billboard Music Awards he was named Artist of the Year and took 11 awards in all.

He supported the album with The Truth Tour. Its set included a small stage perched above the main stage, where the band played. A platform lowered to the main stage, and there were staircases, a circular stairway and a fire escape with an elevator. Kanye West and Christina Milian opened. At the Atlanta show, Usher brought out his artist Rico Love to rap a verse on "Throwback". The dancers pulled singer Monica from the crowd so Usher could serenade her. Lil Jon and Ludacris joined him to close with "Yeah!". That show was filmed as the DVD Truth Tour: Behind the Truth "Live from Atlanta", which the RIAA certified for more than 7 million copies.

Behind the scenes, the labels were reshuffling. Arista went inactive, and after parent company BMG merged with Sony Music, LaFace was revived under the Jive/Zomba banner. Usher's old label brought him back into the fold.

  • On the 22nd of August 2006, Usher took over the role of Billy Flynn in the long-running Broadway revival of the musical Chicago. His opening night drew Penélope Cruz, Gabrielle Union, Clive Davis and Rosie Perez. Ticket sales spiked after he joined the cast. He played the part for two months before strep throat ended his run. The New York Post reported that his absence cost the production an estimated $400,000 in refunds. Producer Barry Weissler said that Usher "has found a new home on Broadway and is welcomed back anytime."

In 2007 Usher split from his manager, who was also his mother, Jonnetta Patton. His fifth album, Here I Stand, followed in May 2008. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of over 433,000 copies. The album earned a double platinum certification from the RIAA and has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Critics praised the maturity of its lyrics, even though it did not match the success of the previous album.

Its lead single, "Love In This Club", went to radio in February 2008 and reached number one on the Hot 100. It held the top spot for three consecutive weeks. It was his eighth number-one single and the fastest-rising song of his career. It also reached number one in New Zealand and number four in the United Kingdom. In 2008 Billboard named him the second most successful artist of the 2000s and the number-one Hot 100 artist of the decade.

In September 2008 he announced One Night Stand, a 15-date tour with an audience made up only of women. That same year he co-founded Raymond-Braun Media Group with Scooter Braun to manage the career of Justin Bieber. On the 18th of January 2009 he performed with Stevie Wonder and Shakira at the Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. On the 7th of July 2009 he sang "Gone Too Soon" at the memorial for Michael Jackson.

Raymond v. Raymond arrived only months after Usher's divorce from Tameka Foster. Its first single, "Papers", was about divorce. It topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for two weeks, and critics praised its emotion. The single "OMG", featuring will.i.am, reached number one in Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. It was his ninth US number one. It made him the first artist of the 2010s to collect number-one singles in three consecutive decades. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in April 2010 with 329,107 copies sold in its first week. He became the first male artist since Eminem with three consecutive albums to debut at number one.

A follow-up extended play, Versus, came on the 24th of August 2010. Usher called it "the last chapter of Raymond v. Raymond". It explored being newly single and a father. Its single "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love", featuring Pitbull, reached the top five in the United States. On the 6th of February 2011 he appeared in the Super Bowl XLV halftime show, singing "OMG" with will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas.

In November 2011 he said he was working on a new sound he called "revolutionary pop". His seventh album, Looking 4 Myself, came out on the 8th of June 2012. Producer Rico Love said Usher "stepped outside of what was safe and normal" to explore himself musically. Usher told Reuters he felt close to a "rebirth". He said, "I gotta go with what I feel and hopefully people will follow me." The album's singles included "Climax", "Scream" and "Lemme See", featuring Rick Ross. Critics described the sound as hybrid pop, mixing EDM, dubstep, neo soul and funk.

  • In 2013, Usher stepped in for CeeLo Green as a coach on the fourth season of NBC's The Voice. His last act, Michelle Chamuel, lost the title to Danielle Bradbery, who was mentored by Blake Shelton. He returned for the sixth season, and his last act, Josh Kaufman, won.

On the 19th of March 2013 he announced an eighth album, titled UR. Years of delays followed. "Good Kisser" gave him his 13th number one on the Airplay chart, tying Drake for the most leaders in the list's history. The UR Experience Tour began in Montreal on the 1st of November 2014 and ended in Tampa, Florida on the 14th of December. Its North American leg covered 27 cities, and the European leg visited 23 more. Mid-tour he released "Clueless", a song that fans could download free with a code from specially marked Honey Nut Cheerios boxes bought at Walmart.

On the 16th of October 2015 he released "Chains", an interactive video on Tidal featuring Nas and Bibi Bourelly. It addressed racial profiling and police brutality. It used the viewer's webcam and facial recognition to pause the song whenever the viewer's eyes left the video. In January 2016 he changed the album's title from UR to Flawed. In June 2016 it was reported that he had signed a management deal with Scooter Braun.

That year he also starred as boxer Sugar Ray Leonard in Hands of Stone, a film about Roberto Durán. His co-stars included Édgar Ramírez, Robert De Niro and Ruben Blades. The film premiered on the 26th of August 2016. His album, now called Hard II Love, was released on the 16th of September 2016 and debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200. It was his seventh consecutive top ten album in the United States.

In October 2018 he released A, an eight-song collaborative album produced entirely by Zaytoven, with features from Future and Gunna. In November 2018 his six-date stadium run in Australia and New Zealand sold over 150,000 tickets. He performed in Johannesburg at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100. In 2019 he had a cameo in the film Hustlers, and he returned to The Voice as a battle advisor on John Legend's team. Late that year he released "Don't Waste My Time" with Ella Mai, the lead single for a ninth album. At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards he performed a tribute to Prince with Sheila E. Days later, on the 31st of January 2020, he sang "Amazing Grace" at the Staples Center. It honored Kobe Bryant before the Lakers' first game after his death.

In 2020 he announced a Las Vegas residency. Live Nation Las Vegas and Caesars Entertainment pledged $1 from every ticket to his foundation, Usher's New Look, which he had founded in 1999. The residency later moved to Park MGM, with 23 shows. On the 8th of March 2022 he parted ways with RCA Records after ten years and five months. He signed a joint venture with Larry Jackson's Gamma company, and he and L.A. Reid founded Mega with Gamma. A clip from his NPR Tiny Desk Concert in June 2022, in which he whispers "watch this", went viral as a meme.

His 2023 singles included "Glu", his first solo single in over two years, and "Good Good", with Summer Walker and 21 Savage. In September 2023 he announced he would headline the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show. He called it "an honor of a lifetime" that he could finally check off his bucket list. His ninth album, Coming Home, debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. The video for "Ruin", featuring Pheelz, was directed by Dave Meyers and shot on an iPhone 15 Pro. His Past Present Future tour was announced with 24 stops. Due to overwhelming demand, it expanded to 58 shows.

  • Usher has a leggiero tenor range of three octaves and four notes. At 13, he set the record on Star Search for the longest note ever held by a child, at 12 seconds. Vocal coach Jan Smith, who has worked with him since My Way, called him "the single most gifted singer I've ever worked with in 26 years". Rolling Stone's Kathryn McGuire called his voice on 8701 "velvety" and "impressively adaptable". The New Yorker's Sasha Frere-Jones, writing about Confessions, found him "long on control and short on texture". Clover Hope of The Village Voice called his voice on Here I Stand "agile" and "balletic". On Rolling Stone's 2023 list of the 200 Greatest Singers of all time, he ranked at number 97.

Michael Jackson is the influence he names most often. Usher told MTV, "I wouldn't be who I am today without Michael Jackson." Prince was another, and Usher said that every album he would try to do one very Prince-influenced song. Frank Sinatra's 1969 album My Way inspired the title of Usher's second album. Eminem's honesty and the rap group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony shaped the fourth. The first record he ever bought was Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel. As a child he attended a New Edition concert, and years later he was invited onstage with the group.

His stage shows built on that inheritance. At the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards he performed "Confessions Part II" and "Yeah!" under a rain machine. During the former he threw the mic stand at a mirror. Rolling Stone placed it at number 13 on its list of the 20 best MTV VMAs opening performances. Rolling Stone's Maura Johnston called him the "Award Show King". A critic for The Cincinnati Enquirer wrote that on his 8701 Evolution Tour in 2002 he proved a singer could really sing and dance at once. Around 2014 he also began playing instruments such as the drums and bass guitar onstage.

Public image became part of the story. People magazine named him the "Sexiest R&B Star" in 1998. Madame Tussauds New York unveiled a wax figure of him in 2007. In 2014 and 2015 his Calvin Klein Collection suits put him on best-dressed lists at the Golden Globe Awards and the Grammy Awards.

Billboard named him the Hot 100 Artist of the 2000s. Sasha Frere-Jones wrote that "For a while, Confessions was pop music". Rolling Stone named "Confessions Part II" the greatest R&B song of the 21st century. Usher has sold over 100 million records and won 8 Grammy Awards. His Hollywood Walk of Fame star, awarded in 2016, sits at 6201 Hollywood Boulevard. At the 2005 Grammy Awards, James Brown joined him for a duet and called him the "Godson of Soul". Ne-Yo said, "without Usher, there would be no me". Others who cite him as an influence include Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Drake and Jungkook of BTS.
