  • Harry Styles ran the Berlin Marathon in 2:59:13, a personal best, while entered under the pseudonym Sted Sarandos. The singer, songwriter and actor, born in 1994, also finished the Tokyo marathon in 2025, completing two of the six World Marathon Majors. A man who needs a false name to run through a city is a man whose face has become public property. This documentary asks how a teenager sent home from a television talent contest came to occupy that position. It asks what the early years of fame cost him, and why his wardrobe has found its way into museums. It also asks what he says he is still searching for.

  • Harry Edward Styles was born on the 1st of February 1994 in Redditch, Worcestershire. His mother, Anne, ran a pub and his father, Desmond, known as Des, worked in finance. The family, including his older sister, Gemma, moved to the Cheshire village of Holmes Chapel. His parents divorced when he was seven, yet he later called his upbringing a "great childhood" and said he always felt supported.

A karaoke machine from his grandfather gave him his first stage. The first song he ever recorded was Elvis Presley's "The Girl of My Best Friend". At Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School he sang lead in a band called White Eskimo, which won a local Battle of the Bands. At sixteen he took a part-time job at the W. Mandeville Bakery, and in his teens he also delivered newspapers and mucked out horse stalls at a stable.

On the 11th of April 2010, following his mother's suggestion, Styles auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor. He opened with Train's "Hey, Soul Sister". Simon Cowell suggested the song did not suit him, so he switched to Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely". He reached bootcamp but went no further in the "Boys" category. In July 2010, four other eliminated solo contestants of his age group were joined with him to form a band for the "Groups" category, mentored by Cowell.

Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik rehearsed with Styles for just two weeks. Styles proposed the name One Direction, and the others agreed. Within the first four weeks of the live shows, they were the last act Cowell still had in the contest. They reached the final and were the last contestant eliminated on the show.

In January 2011, One Direction signed with Cowell's label, Syco Records. Their debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful", went to number one in the UK. The debut album, Up All Night, included three songs Styles co-wrote and entered at number one in the United States. Four more albums followed, Take Me Home in 2012, Midnight Memories in 2013, Four in 2014 and Made in the A.M. in 2015, and each debuted at number one in the UK. Midnight Memories was the world's best-selling album of 2013, and its Where We Are Tour was the highest-grossing tour of 2014. After Four, the group became the only one in the 58-year history of the Billboard 200 whose first four albums all debuted at number one. By March 2015 they had sold 70 million records worldwide, including 7.6 million albums and 26 million singles in the US.

In June 2024, Holmes Chapel launched a guided walking tour lasting between two and a half and three hours. It passes the bakery where he once worked and the Tremlow Viaduct, seen in the 2013 documentary One Direction: This Is Us, where Styles signs his name. After 5,000 fans visited the village in 2023, the Holmes Chapel Partnership had to hire guides, and more than 150 people applied for the role.

  • In 2016, it was Styles himself who proposed that One Direction go on an indefinite hiatus. The band had finished promoting Made in the A.M., and he did not want to "exhaust" the fan base.

Styles has been generally positive about his years in the group. Even so, he has said that being constantly visible was not always easy. He links his avoidance of social media to the old pressure to be available online at all times.

Interviews carried their own fear. He has described worrying about saying the wrong thing. He also feared that refusing to answer questions, such as how many people he had slept with, would leave journalists annoyed with him.

The One Direction contracts contained what he calls "cleanliness clauses". They stated that the group would be "null and void" if he did not obey them. When he later signed a solo contract without such clauses, he told an interviewer that he "burst into tears" because he felt "free."

  • In the first half of 2016, Styles signed with Columbia Records and joined Jeffrey Azoff's Full Stop Management and the talent agency CAA. Around the same time he launched his own label, Erskine Records. Recording for his debut ran through 2016 in Los Angeles, London and Port Antonio, Jamaica, where he and his collaborators spent two months writing in the autumn.

"Sign of the Times", his first solo single, arrived in April 2017. It reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number four on the US Billboard Hot 100. Critics heard a glam rock-influenced soft rock power ballad and drew comparisons to David Bowie. Rolling Stone ranked it the best song of 2017, and its video, in which Styles flies and walks on water, won the Brit Award for British Video of the Year. The self-titled album followed in May 2017 and debuted at number one in Australia, the UK and the US. Variety called it a "classic cocktail of psychedelia, Britpop, and balladry."

Fine Line came out on the 13th of December 2019. Styles recorded it at the Shangri-La studio in Malibu, California, with the production team from his debut, adding funk and soul to the earlier sound. It topped the US charts and set a record as the biggest sales debut by an English male artist in the US since Nielsen SoundScan began electronic tracking in 1991. Its single "Watermelon Sugar" peaked at number four in the UK and became his first US number one. Rolling Stone placed the album on its 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums.

Harry's House, released in 2022, gave Styles his biggest year. Its lead single, "As It Was", debuted at number one in both the UK and the US and spent 15 weeks on top in America, the fourth-longest run in history. In release week he held the top spot on the album and singles charts in more than fifteen countries. He also became the first British solo artist with four tracks in the US top 10 at the same time. "As It Was" was named Billboard's number-one song of 2022 globally and was the world's best-selling single of the year according to the IFPI. Harry's House was short-listed for the Mercury Prize and won Album of the Year at the 65th Grammy Awards. Forbes reported that its first-week vinyl sales exceeded anything a musician had managed before.

On a late December night in 2025, Styles posted an eight-and-a-half-minute video titled "Forever, Forever" to his YouTube channel. It showed the last night of Love On Tour at RCF Arena Campovolo in Reggio Emilia. The final song that evening was an untitled ambient instrumental with Styles at the piano, and the video ended with the words "we belong together". On the 12th of January 2026, posters bearing that phrase appeared in cities around the world. They pointed to a website that redirected to a WhatsApp group, and two days later fans received a voice memo of Styles murmuring the line.

On the 15th of January 2026, Styles announced Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. It was released on the 6th of March 2026, after the lead single "Aperture" arrived on the 23rd of January. "Aperture" and "American Girls" both reached number one globally. Days after the album announcement came Together, Together, a series of concert residencies in seven cities. Styles was also named curator of the 31st Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre in London, part of the venue's 75th anniversary year.

  • Pink Floyd's 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon baffled the young Styles, though he remembers sensing that it was remarkable. The first song he learned all the words to was Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" from 1977, which as a child he took to be about the weather. Critics have heard Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Fleetwood Mac in his debut, along with the honest songwriting of Harry Nilsson.

Shania Twain is the figure he names as his main inspiration, in music and in fashion. He has also cited Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley and Paul McCartney, including McCartney's band Wings. While making Fine Line, he kept returning to a vintage Bowie pep talk that pushed him to go further. Styles has said that evolving is vital in music, and he points to Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the Beatles' different eras as proof that fearlessness inspires.

George Michael left a visible mark. Styles sampled "Faith" from 1987 on his unreleased track "Anna", and he has lyrics from "Careless Whisper" tattooed on his ankles. Joni Mitchell's 1971 album Blue led him to contact its dulcimer player, who then worked with him on Fine Line.

While writing Harry's House in Tokyo, he drew on Haruomi Hosono's 1973 debut album, Hosono House, and echoed its title. Joni Mitchell's 1975 album The Hissing of Summer Lawns already contained a track called "Harry's House", and she tweeted that she loved the title. Gerry Rafferty's 1978 single "Right Down the Line" served as a specific reference point for the sound.

Visual art feeds him too. His private collection includes original works by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Damien Hirst, among others. In 2023, David Hockney painted his portrait for the exhibition David Hockney: Drawing From Life at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Styles called the experience a "complete privilege."

Stevie Nicks compared Fine Line to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, and said Styles inspired her to write new music and poetry. In July 2024 at the British Summer Time festival in London, he joined her on stage for "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and "Landslide", a tribute on Christine McVie's birthday.

  • In 2015, Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield reviewed a One Direction show at MetLife Stadium and reached for a racehorse. He compared Styles to Secretariat at the 1973 Belmont Stakes, already 31 lengths clear yet still accelerating out of sheer love of speed.

As a solo artist, Styles tours as a rock performer with a backing band and plays acoustic guitar. Lead guitarist Mitch Rowland and drummer and vocalist Sarah Jones have toured with him on both of his headlining tours. Jade Yamazaki Stewart of the Seattle Times said Love On Tour felt more like a 1970s rock festival than a modern arena show. He treats performing like athletics, so he does not party or use substances after shows. Craig McLean of The Face described his "stomping, head-banging exuberance", and his stage presence has been likened to Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart. In 2022, fans threw chicken nuggets onstage and urged him to eat one. He replied, "I don't eat chicken, sorry. I don't eat meat", and earned PETA's Best Viral Moment for Animals Award.

Love On Tour, planned for 2020, was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic and began on the 4th of September 2021 in Las Vegas. In April 2022, Styles headlined Coachella before more than 100,000 people. In August and September 2022, he played 15 sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden, and a permanent banner was raised in the venue. He was only the third musical artist to receive one there. The tour ended in July 2023 as the then-fifth-highest-grossing tour of all time, with earnings of $617.3 million.

In July 2017, Styles made his film debut in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, playing a British soldier named Alex. He won the role over "thousands of young men", and Nolan later admitted he had not realised how famous Styles was. Nolan said he cast him because he fit the part and "truly earned a seat at the table." The Daily Telegraph's Robbie Collin praised a "bright, convicted, and unexpectedly not-at-all-jarring performance."

Other offers went differently. In 2019, Styles was reported to be in early talks to play Prince Eric in Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid, but he declined, citing touring and a wish to pursue darker roles. He also auditioned to play Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis. Luhrmann called him a really talented actor, but said, "the real issue with Harry is, he's Harry Styles. He's already an icon."

In 2021, Styles appeared in the mid-credits scene of the Marvel film Eternals as Eros, also called Starfox, brother of Thanos. In 2022 he starred opposite Florence Pugh in Don't Worry Darling, directed by Olivia Wilde, which premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival to mixed reviews. Steph Green of the BBC found his delivery leaden, while Variety's Owen Gleiberman likened him to the young Frank Sinatra. His other 2022 film, My Policeman, with David Dawson and Emma Corrin, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and divided critics as well. The main cast received the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance. The filmography also lists a 2026 title, Harry Styles. One Night In Manchester., in which he appears as himself.

  • During his One Direction years, Styles wore skinny jeans, sheer blouses, floral prints and ankle boots. Billboard's Nicole Saunders traced his path from purple Jack Wills hoodies to a polished blend of 1970s rock and magpie glamour. In 2014, during the era of the album Four, he began working with stylist Harry Lambert. Appearing in Another Man magazine in 2016 led The Guardian's Anne T. Donahue to call him an "artthrob".

As a solo artist, he adopted custom pink suits, sequined tops and printed satin flares, with a heavy dose of Gucci. He began modelling for the Italian house in 2018. Citing his love of pink, he quoted Clash bassist Paul Simonon in a Rolling Stone interview: "Pink is the only true rock & roll colour." In 2019, he turned to sweater vests, baggy high-waisted trousers and pearl necklaces, and The Wall Street Journal's Jacob Gallagher dubbed him the "popularizer of the manly pearl necklace."

For its December 2020 issue, Vogue made him the first man to appear solo on its cover, in a blue Gucci dress. Right-wing commentators objected. Candace Owens demanded that society "Bring back manly men", and Ben Shapiro called the cover a referendum on masculinity. Styles answered that refusing clothes because they are women's clothes shuts out a whole world of great ones. He added that "what's exciting about right now is you can wear what you like." In 2022, the dress entered the V&A Museum exhibit Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear. A blue velvet suit sits in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, linen trousers at the Design Museum, and a leather suit at the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live.

A JW Anderson cardigan he wore in a 2020 rehearsal for Today went viral on TikTok during lockdown, because Anderson posted the pattern online for free. The V&A acquired the cardigan in November 2020 for its permanent collection. Styles also spotlights small designers, including Bode, Egonlab and S.S. Daley, and in 2024 he took a minority stake in S.S. Daley.

After Styles wore Adidas Gazelles with every Love On Tour outfit, Adidas renamed the shoes "Satellite Stompers" on its web store. His fans, known as "Harries", arrive at concerts in sequins, pink cowboy hats and feather boas, leading Fashionista to call the shows "his fans' Met Gala". In 2023, Texas State University announced a course on Styles examining celebrity, gender, fan culture and consumerism.

His body carries its own wardrobe. He got his first tattoo at 18, and the largest is a butterfly on his sternum. Artist Liam Sparkes said it was based on an old French prison tattoo inspired by the 1973 film Papillon. In December 2015, he was tattooed on television as a dare on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Below his left collarbone is "17 Black", from a night he lost money gambling in Australia. A padlock was tattooed on him by Ed Sheeran, and the two share matching tattoos of the children's character Pingu.

In November 2022, Styles and Alessandro Michele unveiled a Gucci collection called "Ha Ha Ha" at Milan Fashion Week. It included tailored wool and velvet suits, tweed trench coats, tartan kilts, bowling shirts and printed pyjamas.

  • A pin on his guitar strap in 2017 became Styles's best-known slogan. "Treat People with Kindness", shortened to TPWK, appeared on his debut tour merchandise, including Pride T-shirts whose profits supported GLSEN. In a December 2019 interview he recalled, "It was a pin I had on my guitar strap and we made T-shirts for it", and he began seeing strangers wearing them. The slogan became a Fine Line song, released as a single in January 2021 with a video featuring Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

In October 2019, posters reading "Do you know who you are?" and "TPWK" appeared in London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York and Australia. On World Mental Health Day that year he launched a website bot called "Do You Know Who You Are?" It offered users words such as "bright", "determined", "loving" and "wonderful", signed off "TPWK. LOVE, H."

Asked in December 2019 why he did not back more causes, Styles gave a pointed answer. He said he preferred that people believe him when he speaks, and he called it "dilution" to spread himself thin. He was still looking for what he called "This Is My Life Fight", the one thing worth putting his whole weight behind.

Meanwhile the giving has been wide. In 2013, he and Liam Payne became ambassadors for the cancer charity Trekstock and raised over US$800,000 through the fundraising platform Prizeo. In 2016, he gave his hair to the Little Princess Trust, which supplies wigs to children who have lost their hair through illness. His first solo tour sent US$1.2 million to 62 charities, and his second raised more than US$6.5 million for its charity partners. When the pandemic postponed shows, he paid his core tour crew's salaries until the end of 2020. In 2018, he received a Gay Times Honour for LGBTQ Advocate.

On the 2nd of June 2022, he announced he would donate his appearance fee from an Apple AirPods campaign to the International Rescue Committee, which was responding to refugees fleeing Ukraine. In July 2023, he invited three Ukrainian refugees supported by the committee to his Warsaw stadium show. After the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, he partnered with Everytown for Gun Safety across 44 shows in five North American cities. He and Live Nation donated $1 million to the Everytown Support Fund, and the partnership won a Pollstar Award in 2023.

Styles has also spoken on politics. In 2020 he supported Black Lives Matter and endorsed Joe Biden for US president. When Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, he told an Austin, Texas crowd, "No one can tell you what to do with your own body, it's yours." In May 2026, at a concert in Amsterdam, he voiced support for Palestinians affected by the Gaza war. On his Together, Together tour, he again worked with Choose Love, whose partners fund aid, food and life-saving treatments in Palestine, Lebanon and Sudan.
