  • One Direction began on the 23rd of July 2010, when five young singers who had each been knocked out of a talent show were put together as a group. Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson had all auditioned alone for the 2010 series of The X Factor. None of them made it past the bootcamp round of the Boys category. Within a few years, the English-Irish pop band, formed in London, had sold more than 70 million records worldwide. Their story raises some odd questions. Who actually came up with the idea of joining five rejected soloists into one act? How does a group that lost its talent show end up compared with the Beatles? What role did the internet play when the band and its fans met there every day? And why would a band at the height of its fame choose to pause?

  • In 2013, Simon Cowell said it had taken him only 10 minutes to form the group. Nicole Scherzinger, a guest judge that year, had also claimed the idea as hers. In 2022, The X Factor released footage nobody had seen before, and it showed that Scherzinger played a significant part. The footage also revealed the order in which the members were chosen. Horan came first, then Styles, Tomlinson, Payne and Malik. Styles supplied the name, which was soon shortened to 1D.

For their qualifying round at the judges' houses, the new group sang an acoustic version of "Torn". It was also the first song they ever performed together. Cowell later said the performance convinced him they "were confident, fun, like a gang of friends, and kind of fearless as well". The band quickly became a fan favourite on the show, with a large online following.

In the 2010 final, only Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson finished ahead of them. Right after the final, "Forever Young", the song they would have released had they won, leaked onto the internet. Cowell then signed the band to Syco Records on a reported £2 million deal. Recording of a debut album began in January 2011, when the group flew to Los Angeles to work with the producer RedOne. They also joined the X Factor Live Tour, playing to 500,000 people across the UK. When the tour ended in April 2011, the five returned to work on the album.

  • In September 2011, the single "What Makes You Beautiful" was released in the UK and Ireland and went straight to number one. It had become the most pre-ordered single in the history of Sony Music Entertainment. The next two singles, "Gotta Be You" and "One Thing", both reached the UK top ten. In November 2011, the band signed with Columbia Records for North America. Its co-chairman Steve Barnett said he "thought there was a void, and maybe they could seize and hold it." That month, the debut album Up All Night came out in the UK and Ireland. It became the country's fastest-selling debut album of 2011. The Up All Night Tour began in December 2011, their first as headliners, and its tickets had sold out in 12 minutes.

One Direction arrived in the United States in February 2012 and began a run of radio promotion. They also opened for Big Time Rush, playing 16 shows. Their first American television appearance came on The Today Show at Rockefeller Center, where an estimated 15,000 fans gathered on the plaza. That month, "What Makes You Beautiful" was released in the US. It debuted at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest debut for a British act in more than a decade. By June 2016, it had sold 4.8 million copies in the US and over 7 million worldwide.

Up All Night reached international release in March 2012. It made One Direction the first UK group whose debut album reached number one in the US, and Guinness World Records inducted them for it. The album went on to top the charts in 16 countries. By August 2012 it had sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Across the whole of 2012 it sold 4.5 million, making it the third best-selling album in the world that year.

In April 2012, the band appeared in an episode of the sitcom iCarly. In May 2012, their book Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction was published in the US and topped The New York Times Best Seller list. In June 2012, Nick Gatfield, chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment UK, said he expected the band to represent a $100 million business empire by 2013. By August 2012, sales exceeded 8 million singles, 3 million albums and 1 million DVDs. That month, they performed "What Makes You Beautiful" at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. On the 6th of September 2012, they won all three MTV Video Music Awards for which they were nominated, including Best New Artist.

A lawsuit filed in April 2012 threatened to take their name away. An American pop rock band also called One Direction said it had used the name since 2009 and had recorded two albums. It had applied to register the trademark in the US in February 2011. It asked for three times the profits of the UK band, plus damages above US$1 million. The suit said Syco and Sony Music had knowingly ignored its rights after learning of the overlap in early 2011. In September 2012, the BBC reported that the UK group had won the dispute. The American band renamed itself Uncharted Shores, and both groups said in a joint statement that they were happy with the outcome. That same month, the UK group released "Live While We're Young", the lead single of its second album.

  • Take Me Home arrived in November 2012 and sold 540,000 copies in its first week in the US. It debuted atop the Billboard 200 and topped the charts in more than 34 other countries. One Direction became the first boy band in US chart history to record two number-one albums in the same calendar year. They were also the first group ever to see their first two albums reach the top. The debut had been described by Robert Copsey of Digital Spy as a "collection of PG pop rock with killer choruses". The follow-up was written by committee, with an average of just under five songwriters per track. Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk, who composed "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing", spent six months in Stockholm developing songs. They shaped melodies around the voices of the members. Recording began in May 2012 at Kinglet Studios in Stockholm, and the cover shows the group around a red K6 telephone box. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian heard a "peppy, synth-bolstered take on early-80s new-wave pop". Jon Caramanica of The New York Times found it "far more mechanical" than the debut.

"Best Song Ever" was released on the 22nd of July 2013 as the lead single from Midnight Memories. It reached number two in the US, the band's highest US chart position. It also broke the 24-hour Vevo record, with 10.9 million views on YouTube. To promote the album, the band held "1D Day", a seven-hour interactive YouTube live-stream sponsored by Google. Guests included Simon Cowell, Khloe Kardashian, Kelly Rowland, Robbie Williams, Celine Dion and Piers Morgan. Midnight Memories was released globally on the 25th of November 2013. It debuted at number one in the UK and US, making One Direction the first group to open at number one on the Billboard 200 with its first three albums. Despite its late-year release, it became the best-selling album worldwide in 2013, with 4 million copies. The band called it "edgy" with a "slightly rockier tone". It drew on 80s rock and briefly touched dubstep in "Little White Lies". Critics praised the lyrical depth and the group's involvement in production.

On the 8th of September 2014, the band announced Four, due on the 17th of November. Payne called it "edgier" and said the group had written most of its songs. Horan had suggested the title, to mark their fourth album in four years. The lead single "Steal My Girl" came out on the 29th of September. The second single, "Night Changes", sold over one million units in the US. Two months before release, Four was already the top album on iTunes in 67 countries. It became the sixth-bestselling album of 2014, with 3.2 million copies. One Direction became the only group to have its first four albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200. Rolling Stone called the record "saturated with retro vibes".

The song "Perfect" arrived in October 2015 and reached the Billboard top ten. It was the group's fifth top-ten Hot 100 debut, which broke the Beatles' record for the most among bands. Its parent album, Made in the A.M., was a "slick-sounding" pop record with a reflective mood and more ballads than usual. It experimented with jazz-fusion, indie, brit-pop and synth-pop. Several songs dealt with failed relationships, which made it sadder than earlier releases. Teen Vogue called it a "long love letter to Directioners". The New York Times heard influences from the Beatles, Coldplay and the Bee Gees. Rolling Stone later called the group "one of the great rock bands of the 21st century."

Slate noticed that One Direction was unusual among boy bands. They did not dance, rarely wore matching outfits and were heavily tattooed. Their songs, videos and personas also had a joking, fun tone. Each member was given a role. Horan was "the cute Irish one", Malik "the quiet and mysterious one", Payne "the sensible one", Styles "the charming flirt" and Tomlinson "the funny one". Not every critic was won over. Chris Richards of The Washington Post wrote that no one voice stood out. He could not imagine a successful solo act emerging from the band.

  • The Take Me Home Tour began in February 2013 as the band's first all-arena tour. It ran to 123 shows across Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania. Within a day of going on sale, 300,000 tickets had sold in the UK and Ireland. Those included a six-date sell-out at the O2 Arena in London. The tour grossed $114 million.

On the 16th of May 2013, the band announced the Where We Are Tour, their first all-stadium run. It began on the 25th of April 2014 and ended on the 5th of October 2014 after 69 shows. It grossed over $290 million, beating the runner-up, Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience World Tour, by $87 million. That made it the highest-grossing tour of 2014, the 15th highest of all time and the highest ever for a vocal group. A total of 3.4 million people attended.

The On the Road Again Tour opened in February 2015 as their fourth world tour and second all-stadium tour. It ended on the 31st of October 2015 after 80 shows in stadiums across Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. It sold more than 2.3 million tickets and grossed $208 million, the second highest of 2015.

One Direction: This Is Us, a 3D documentary and concert film directed by Morgan Spurlock, was released by TriStar Pictures on the 30th of August 2013. It topped the UK and US box offices and grossed over $60 million worldwide. That made it the fourth highest-grossing concert movie. In December 2013, the home release sold nearly 270,000 copies in the UK within three days. It beat the record set by Michael Jackson's This Is It in 2010 by 10,000 copies. For the film's premiere, police sealed off Leicester Square, where an estimated 70,000 fans had gathered.

Paul McCartney, a former Beatle, warned the band about the pressure of fame like theirs. Fan hysteria around One Direction was often compared to Beatlemania, and the group was called the biggest British group since the Beatles. Together with acts like Adele, they were also seen as part of a new British Invasion of the US. In 2014, Styles claimed the band was bigger than the Beatles in fame, while admitting they could not compete musically. McCartney disagreed.

The Wanted was supposed to be One Direction's great rival, and many expected a feud like the one between NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. Billboard wrote in 2014 that "the boy band war was not a war at all; it had been a one-sided stomping". The Wanted went on indefinite hiatus that year. Its members said "One Direction are a phenomenon that no one else can compete with".

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry named One Direction its Global Recording Artist of the Year for 2013, as the world's best-selling artist. In 2014, Billboard named them Artist of the Year. They won seven Brit Awards, seven American Music Awards, six Billboard Music Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards. At the Teen Choice Awards, they set a record with 28 wins from 31 nominations. Forbes ranked them the fourth highest-earning celebrities in the world in 2015 and the highest-earning under 30. The band was reportedly worth over $1 billion. In 2016, Forbes placed them second, a year into their hiatus.

  • Sonny Takhar, a former president of Syco Records, attributed the group's breakthrough to social media. The band's manager, Will Bloomfield, put it plainly: "These guys live online, and so do their fans." Each member used Twitter to talk with fans. Sunil Singhvi, a former Twitter head of entertainment in the UK, said online fans were the reason the group became a global phenomenon. Savan Kotecha told Rolling Stone that the band "just knew how to speak to their fans". The Detroit News called them "the first megastar boy band of the Social Media Era".

Fans called themselves Directioners, and they were considered one of the largest fandoms on the internet. HuffPost described mobs forming outside hotels, at airports and around concert venues. For years the band members had to leave buildings discreetly to stay safe. On the writing site Wattpad, One Direction was the most popular topic for views and comments, and some stories passed 100 million views. A 2016 study found that a quarter of Wattpad's 150 most popular authors wrote One Direction fan fiction. In 2014, writer Anna Todd published After, which began as a One Direction fan fiction on Wattpad.

In 2015, One Direction was the second most reblogged band on Tumblr. The most reblogged ship that year was "Larry Stylinson", a name joining Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles. Fans who believe the conspiracy theory that the two are or were a couple are known as Larries. A 2011 tweet from Tomlinson to Styles became one of the most-retweeted tweets on Twitter, peaking as the second most retweeted of all time. The fandom is also credited with popularising an internet meme that digitally added flower crowns to images of celebrities. In 2013, members of the fandom started Rainbow Direction, an organisation promoting inclusivity for LGBTQ+ fans at the band's concerts.

The media did not always treat the fans kindly. The 2013 British documentary Crazy About One Direction focused on fans labelled "the craziest", including some who wished harm on band members' partners. The fandom reacted with intense backlash, believing the portrayal was inaccurate. The Independent took the opposite view, writing that the band's legacy was "the extraordinary power of teenage girls", whom it called "alchemists". In 2022, Fast Company wrote that "One Direction fangirls made the internet a better place". That same year, Kaitlyn Tiffany published Everything I Need I Get from You: How Fangirls Created the Internet as We Know It.

  • In 2011, One Direction became the face of Pokémon Black and White in a series of television adverts, and they launched two Nokia phones. In 2012, they teamed up with Colgate on a One Direction toothpaste and toothbrush line. They also signed with Pepsi, appearing with NFL player Drew Brees in the "Live for Now" campaign. The American firm Hasbro launched mini figures of the members, and that October the band endorsed the Filipino clothing brand Penshoppe. In 2013, they announced "1D World" pop-up shops in Brisbane, Toronto, Chicago, New York, Tokyo and Stockholm. Nabisco became the title sponsor of their North American tour. MUA Cosmetics released a makeup range called "Little Things", inspired by the members' favourite colours. Their first fragrance, "Our Moment", was sold exclusively at Harrods. Later scents followed: "That Moment" in February 2014, "You & I" in August 2014, and "Between Us" in June 2015. In 2015, they appeared in a Toyota Vios advert in Thailand and in a Honda Civic advert with the tagline "It's all One Direction approved."

In February 2013, the band released "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)", a medley of two songs, as the single for Comic Relief. It reached number one in the UK and Ireland and peaked at 13 in the US. The video was shot in Ghana, where the group volunteered at a children's hospital, and in Tokyo, New York and London. In London, it included 10 Downing Street, with a cameo from the then prime minister David Cameron. The band also travelled to several African countries to make short films for the charity, and together they raised over £2 million.

The BBC's Children in Need telethon featured the band in 2011. In 2012, they opened the broadcast with "Live While We're Young". They said it was "incredible" to take part, because they had "always watched" it as children. That year, Niall Horan organised a birthday event at the Mullingar Park hotel for Irish Autism Action and Temporary Emergency Accommodation Mullingar. Tickets sold out in minutes. In 2013, Payne and Styles became ambassadors for the cancer charity Trekstock. A partnership with Office Depot sent part of its proceeds to an anti-bullying education programme. The nonprofit DoSomething named One Direction the most charitable act of the year, behind Taylor Swift. The band also regularly supported the children's charity Believe in Magic.

In August 2014, fans could meet the band after giving £5 to Stand Up To Cancer. On the 15th of November 2014, the members joined Band Aid 30 at Sarm West Studios in Notting Hill, London. They recorded a new version of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" to raise money during the 2014 Ebola crisis in Western Africa. In 2015, they launched the "Action 1D" campaign with Action/2015 to raise awareness of poverty, inequality and climate change. Then presidential candidate Hillary Clinton supported it. The campaign arrived in a year that would also change the band itself.

  • On the 25th of March 2015, during the Asia leg of their tour, the band announced Zayn Malik's departure. "I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart", he said in the statement. He added: "I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight." He denied rumours of a rift. Later he said he left because he was unhappy with the musical direction and could not "put any input in". Fan reactions went viral, including candlelight vigils held in his memory. Madame Tussauds in London hired "tissue attendants" to comfort visitors at the band's wax sculptures. On the 14th of May 2015, the remaining four appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden and confirmed they would carry on without a fifth member.

On the 31st of July 2015, the four released "Drag Me Down" with no promotional material or announcement. It reached number one in the UK and Ireland, number three in the US, and became their first number one in France and Australia. It also set a UK record for first-week streams, with 2.03 million. In August 2015, they said they would go on hiatus in 2016 to pursue individual projects, planning to work together again. Made in the A.M. came out on the 13th of November 2015 and topped the charts in the UK, while reaching number two in the US. On the 22nd of November 2015, the band won Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards for the second year in succession. They performed on The X Factor final on the 13th of December. Their final televised performance as a group came on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve on the 31st of December 2015.

In January 2016, Us Weekly reported that the hiatus would become a permanent split. Representatives for the group denied it, saying that "nothing has changed regarding hiatus plans for the group". On the 22nd of February 2017, One Direction won the Brit Award for Video of the Year for "History". Payne was the only member present and accepted it on the band's behalf. By May 2017, all five members had released solo singles. In February 2018, it was reported that the group had folded its touring company. It had applied for removal from the Companies House registry in October 2017. In a 2017 interview, Styles said he first raised the idea of a hiatus in late 2014, because he "didn't want to exhaust" the fanbase. Malik said the members had grown "sick" of each other by 2015. In 2023, Tomlinson said the split felt like "another loss". In 2025, he recalled the first discussion of a pause by saying "the room felt cold that day".

On the 16th of October 2024, Liam Payne died after accidentally falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The members of One Direction had not reunited since the hiatus began. Malik, Styles, Tomlinson and Horan released a joint statement paying tribute to him. Soon after, all five of the group's albums returned to the top 40 of the UK Albums Chart, and all five charted on the US Billboard 200. That same year, Simon Cowell announced open casting calls for the "next One Direction". He said he did not believe a boy band had matched their success since. Tomlinson, asked about a possible reunion, said that "there's no one who would have campaigned more for One Direction to come back than Liam".
