  • Justin Timberlake was 11 years old when he appeared on the television show Star Search and sang country songs under the name Justin Randall. The boy from Memphis, Tennessee would one day be dubbed the Prince of Pop. Billboard would name him one of the greatest pop stars of the 21st century. His path ran through a Disney Channel variety show, a boy band that broke sales records, a long run of film roles, and a halftime performance that gave the English language a new phrase. How did a church choir director's son turn country songs and gospel into a career that crossed so many fields? What did he borrow from the artists he admired? And what happened when the spotlight turned harsh?

  • Justin Randall Timberlake was born on the 31st of January 1981 in Memphis, Tennessee. His father, Charles Randall Timberlake, directed a Baptist church choir. His mother was Janet Lynn, born Bomar, who later went by Harless. Two half-brothers, Jonathan and Stephen, came from his father's second marriage to Lisa Perry. A half-sister, Laura Katherine, died shortly after birth in 1997. Timberlake later thanked her in the credits of the album NSYNC as "My Angel in Heaven".

His grandfather introduced him to country artists such as Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. Around the age of his Star Search appearance, his tastes widened to rhythm and blues from the 1960s and 1970s. Al Green, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye became favorites. With his father he held listening sessions for albums by the Eagles and Bob Seger.

From 1993 to 1995, Timberlake was a Mouseketeer on The All New Mickey Mouse Club. The Disney Channel show had its cast perform cover songs, skits, and choreography. His castmates included Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, JC Chasez, Ryan Gosling, and Keri Russell. Spears would become his girlfriend, Aguilera a tourmate, and Chasez a bandmate.

In 1995, Timberlake recruited Chasez for an all-male singing group put together by Chris Kirkpatrick. The project was financed by boy band manager Lou Pearlman, and it eventually became NSYNC. The group began recording and performing in 1996, starting in Europe, with Timberlake and Chasez as the two lead singers. America took notice in 1998, when their self-titled debut album sold 11 million copies. It included the single "Tearin' Up My Heart".

Legal battles with Pearlman, their former manager, followed, and the group signed with Jive Records. Their third album, No Strings Attached, arrived in 2000. It sold 2.4 million copies in its first week, which made it the fastest-selling album of all time. Adele did not break that record until 2015, with her third album, 25. The album held the number one singles "It's Gonna Be Me", "Bye Bye Bye", and "This I Promise You".

The fourth album, Celebrity, came out in 2001 and sold 1.8 million copies in its first week. It produced the top-five single "Girlfriend". The band played the Academy Awards in 2000, the 2002 Winter Olympics, and the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show. In 2000, Timberlake also made his film debut in the Wonderful World of Disney production Model Behavior, playing a model named Jason Sharpe. A year later he appeared as a young Elton John in the video for John's song "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore".

After the Celebrity Tour, the group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2002. NSYNC had sold more than 70 million records worldwide, which made it the fifth-best-selling boy band in history. Timberlake's growing stardom and fading public appetite for boy bands ended the group. Bandmate Lance Bass criticized Timberlake's actions in his memoir Out of Sync. Meanwhile, a phone call from Michael Jackson was about to change how Timberlake saw his future.

  • Around 2001, Timberlake wrote a song called "Gone" with Michael Jackson in mind. Jackson turned it down, and NSYNC recorded it instead. Before the release, however, Jackson contacted Timberlake directly. In a later interview, Timberlake said that this conversation was the first time he felt confident enough to go solo. By 2002, with NSYNC on hiatus, he was working with Pharrell Williams of the production team The Neptunes, and with Timbaland.

In August 2002, Timberlake premiered his first solo single, "Like I Love You", at the MTV Video Music Awards. It peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. His debut album, Justified, followed in November and opened at number two on the Billboard 200. First-week sales of 439,000 copies were lower than earlier NSYNC releases. The album still sold more than three million copies in the United States and more than ten million worldwide.

Critics praised the rhythm and blues sound that The Neptunes and Timbaland supplied. Timberlake said of the direction, "I just want to do R&B. It's what I grew up listening to". The album produced the top-five singles "Cry Me a River" and "Rock Your Body". Critics noted that "Cry Me a River" drew on his breakup with Britney Spears. They had begun dating in early 1999, and the relationship ended abruptly in March 2002.

Television made him more visible still. Near the end of 2002, Timberlake became the first celebrity pranked on Punk'd, a candid camera show created by Ashton Kutcher. He cried during the episode, and later admitted he had been under the influence of cannabis. Three episodes afterward he set up Kelly Osbourne to be pranked, which made him the first celebrity to appear on the show more than once.

In October 2003, he hosted Saturday Night Live and was its musical guest for the first time. He spoofed Kutcher and Punk'd, then joined comedian Jimmy Fallon in a skit called The Barry Gibb Talk Show, where they played the Bee Gees brothers Barry and Robin Gibb. That skit began a long friendship and collaboration with Fallon.

The summer of 2003 brought The Justified & Stripped Tour, co-headlined with Christina Aguilera. Later that year he released "I'm Lovin' It", which McDonald's used as the theme for its campaign of the same name. The deal reportedly earned him an estimated $6 million and included a tour called Justified and Lovin' It Live. With his solo career established, the biggest test of his public image was a few months away.

  • More than 140 million viewers watched the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show in February 2004. CBS broadcast it from Houston, and Timberlake performed with Janet Jackson. As the closing song ended, he tore away part of her black leather costume in a planned reveal that matched a line in the lyrics. Jackson's representative explained that the plan was to pull off a rubber bustier and show a red lace bra. Instead, part of the costume detached, and Jackson's breast was briefly exposed.

Timberlake apologized, saying he was "sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl..." The media adopted the phrase wardrobe malfunction for the incident, and it has since entered pop culture.

The consequences reached the Grammy Awards. Timberlake and Jackson were threatened with exclusion from the 2004 ceremony unless they apologized on screen. Timberlake attended and delivered a scripted apology while accepting the first of two Grammys he won that night. The awards were Best Pop Vocal Album for Justified and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Cry Me a River". He had also been nominated for Album of the Year for Justified. He was nominated as well for Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Where Is the Love?", recorded with The Black Eyed Peas.

The story returned years later. After the release of Framing Britney Spears, public attention turned to comments Timberlake made in 2002 about his relationship with Spears after their breakup. Some people considered them misogynistic. The documentary also renewed interest in the halftime incident. Timberlake responded with a public apology on Instagram. He wrote that he had "benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism" and that he did not "want to ever benefit from others being pulled down again". He finished by writing, "I can do better and I will do better". In June 2021, he also voiced support for Spears during her court battle over her conservatorship.

How the halftime plan came together remains disputed. A stylist alleged that Timberlake was originally meant to step on the back of Jackson's dress to reveal a pearl g-string. She said he changed the plan to a breast reveal to "one-up" a kiss between Spears and Madonna at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Salli Frattini, the show's producer, said in 2018 that the team tried removing clothing in rehearsal, without nudity, and dropped the idea. In her account, Jackson's team pitched the idea to Timberlake before the show. Whatever the truth, Timberlake himself soon stepped away from music.

  • After the Super Bowl incident, Timberlake felt "burned out" by his music career. He opted out of an NSYNC reunion and kept recording as a guest. In 2004 he made "Good Foot" with Timbaland for the Shark Tale soundtrack. In 2005 he joined The Black Eyed Peas on "My Style" and worked with Charlie Wilson and will.i.am on "Floatin'". While recording "Signs" with Snoop Dogg that year, he discovered a throat condition. Nodules were removed from his throat in an operation on the 5th of May 2005, and doctors advised him not to sing or speak loudly for at least a few months. That same year, he started his own label, JayTee Records.

In December 2005, he began his second album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, again with Timbaland. Timberlake wanted an experimental sound and managed the recording sessions himself. He drew inspiration from David Bowie and Prince, developed an interest in a rock direction, and even took influence from trance music. In July 2006, the lead single, "SexyBack", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 within weeks and stayed there for seven consecutive weeks.

The album itself arrived on the 12th of September 2006 and opened at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 684,000 copies in its first week. It set a record for iTunes pre-orders and beat Coldplay's record for the biggest one-week sales of a digital album. Timbaland and Danja produced most of it, with additional work from will.i.am, Rick Rubin, and Timberlake. Snoop Dogg, Three 6 Mafia, T.I., and will.i.am contributed guest vocals. A studio representative described the album as "all about sexiness" with "an adult feel".

"My Love", featuring T.I., reached number one on the Hot 100, as did "What Goes Around... Comes Around". The latter song is reported to have been inspired by the breakup of his childhood friend and business partner Trace Ayala with the actress Elisha Cuthbert. "Give It to Me", a Timbaland single with Timberlake and Nelly Furtado as guests, also topped the chart. "LoveStoned/I Think She Knows (Interlude)" and "Until the End of Time" reached the top 20, and "Summer Love" the top 10.

On the 16th of December 2006, Timberlake hosted Saturday Night Live and served as musical guest for the second time. With Andy Samberg, he performed an R&B song in a skit called "Dick in a Box". Billboard called it one of the most iconic musical moments in the show's history. It became a viral hit and one of the most-viewed videos on YouTube at the time. Rolling Stone ranked it third on its list of the 50 greatest Saturday Night Live sketches. The song won an Emmy and appeared on The Lonely Island's debut album, Incredibad.

The FutureSex/LoveShow tour began in January 2007, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later added the album to its library and archive. Billboard ranked the tour the third highest-grossing of 2007 and the highest-grossing by a solo act. When the tour finished in Australasia and the Middle East in November 2007, Timberlake turned toward film sets.

  • Edison Force, filmed in 2004, cast Timberlake as a journalist, and it went straight to video on the 18th of July 2006. He followed it with Alpha Dog, alongside Bruce Willis, and Black Snake Moan, alongside Samuel L. Jackson. He also appeared in Richard Kelly's Southland Tales, and voiced Artie in the animated film Shrek the Third in 2007. One role slipped away. Director Chris Columbus insisted that only the original Broadway cast could convey the true meaning of Rent, so Adam Pascal kept the part of Roger Davis.

He resumed acting full time in 2008, starring in Mike Myers' comedy The Love Guru. Greater recognition came in 2010, when he played Sean Parker, the founder of Napster, in The Social Network. Parker himself joked about the casting: "I don't think I look anything like Timberlake, but it's not so bad being played by a sex symbol". The same year he voiced Boo-Boo Bear in the live-action and animated comedy Yogi Bear.

In 2011 he starred opposite Cameron Diaz in Bad Teacher, and opposite Mila Kunis in Friends with Benefits. He also played Will Salas, the hero of Andrew Niccol's science fiction film In Time. Later parts included Wonder Wheel in 2017, with Kate Winslet and Juno Temple, directed by Woody Allen. He starred in Palmer in 2021.

In November 2016, DreamWorks Animation released Trolls, in which Timberlake voiced the lead character, Branch, opposite Anna Kendrick. He also served as the film's executive music producer and performed original songs for it. Trolls World Tour followed in 2020 and Trolls: Band Together in 2023.

Behind the scenes, he kept writing and producing for others. "4 Minutes", a duet with Madonna with backing vocals by Timbaland, was released on the 17th of March 2008. It was the lead single from her album Hard Candy, where Timberlake also served as an executive producer and co-wrote four other songs. The single topped the charts in over 21 countries. He co-wrote and produced "Nite Runner" and "Falling Down" for Duran Duran, appeared with Timbaland on 50 Cent's "Ayo Technology", and featured on Ciara's "Love Sex Magic". He also wrote and produced for Rihanna and Leona Lewis.

At the 50th Grammy Awards in February 2008, he won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "What Goes Around...Comes Around" and Best Dance Recording for "LoveStoned/I Think She Knows". His partnership with Jimmy Fallon also flourished. He appeared on Fallon's debut as host of Late Night on the 2nd of March 2009, and their sketch "History of Rap" debuted in 2010. By 2015, a sixth edition of that sketch aired on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

  • In June 2012, Timberlake began a third album with, in his words, "no rules and/or end goal in mind". That October, on the 19th, he married the actress Jessica Biel at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Fasano, Italy. They had become engaged in December 2011. In January 2013, he announced his return to music and released "Suit & Tie", featuring Jay-Z, which peaked at number three on the Hot 100. After four years without a concert, he performed on the 2nd of February 2013 in New Orleans. The song "Mirrors" reached number two in the United States and number one in the United Kingdom.

The 20/20 Experience came out on the 19th of March 2013 through RCA Records, because Jive Records had been disbanded. It became the fastest-selling album in the history of the iTunes Store, and it opened at number one with just over 968,000 copies sold in the United States. It was the biggest sales week of 2013, and the album ended the year as the country's best seller. He performed with Jay-Z on the Legends of the Summer tour, then took The 20/20 Experience World Tour on the road with his 15-piece backing ensemble, the Tennessee Kids. The designer Tom Ford created more than 600 exclusive pieces for the tour. The World Tour became the highest-grossing tour led by a solo artist in 2014.

At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, on the 25th of August, he received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, won Video of the Year for "Mirrors", and briefly reunited with his NSYNC bandmates onstage. The companion album, The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2, appeared on the 30th of September 2013 and debuted at number one.

In May 2016, he released "Can't Stop the Feeling!", the lead single from the Trolls soundtrack. He performed it at the Eurovision Song Contest final on the 14th of May 2016. It debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top spot in 16 other countries. In the United States it was the best-selling song of the year, with 2.4 million downloads. The song earned an Academy Award nomination, and Timberlake opened the 89th Academy Awards with it on the 26th of February 2017.

Man of the Woods came out on the 2nd of February 2018, two days before he headlined the Super Bowl LII halftime show in Minneapolis. The album is named after his son Silas, whose name means "from the forest". Timberlake described it as Southern American music made modern. At the halftime show he performed a duet of "I Would Die 4 U" with a video projection of the late Prince. The album topped the Billboard 200 with 293,000 units, giving him his fourth consecutive number one album.

The sixth album, Everything I Thought It Was, took four years to make. Its first single, "Selfish", debuted at number 19 on the Hot 100 in January 2024. The album followed on the 15th of March 2024 and debuted at number four, his sixth consecutive top-five album. The Forget Tomorrow World Tour began on the 29th of April 2024 in Vancouver and sold over $140 million in tickets before opening. After nine additional dates were added, over one million tickets had been sold.

On the 18th of June 2024, Timberlake was arrested in Sag Harbor, New York, for driving while intoxicated. He was also cited for running a stop sign and failing to keep in lane. He told authorities he had only one martini and refused a breathalyzer. The arrest report said an officer saw bloodshot and glassy eyes and unsteadiness. Timberlake reportedly said, "This is going to ruin the tour." The officer allegedly asked, "What tour?" Timberlake replied, "The world tour". That exchange became a viral meme, though it was not in the body camera footage released in March 2026.

On the 2nd of August 2024, he pleaded not guilty from Antwerp, Belgium, to a revised misdemeanor charge. On the 13th of September 2024, he pleaded guilty to a noncriminal charge of driving while impaired. He received a $500 fine with a $260 surcharge, and 25 hours of community service. He was also required to make a public safety announcement. Refusing the breathalyzer automatically suspended his license. In March 2026, he sued the Sag Harbor Village Police Department to block release of the footage, and a judge granted a temporary restraining order on the 5th of March 2026.

In July 2025, at the end of the tour, Timberlake revealed he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease. He said he had experienced massive nerve pain and crazy fatigue onstage. He decided that the joy of performing outweighed the fleeting stress his body felt, and kept touring.

  • In 2003, Rolling Stone put Timberlake on its cover and declared him "The New King of Pop". The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg later wrote that he is "widely regarded as one of the greatest all-around entertainers in the history of show business". Critics have also called him the President of Pop. He appeared on the Time 100 list in 2007 and again in 2013, when Stevie Wonder wrote the tribute.

Critics rank individual works highly. Rolling Stone placed "Cry Me a River" at number 20 on its list of the 100 best songs of the 2000s. Billboard's Jason Lipshutz called its video one of the more brilliant musical moments of the century. FutureSex/LoveSounds sat at number 46 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 best albums of the 2000s. Vibe named it the greatest of the decade. Lipshutz compared its first half to that of Michael Jackson's 1979 album Off the Wall. "SexyBack" helped bring electronic dance music to top 40 radio, and popularized the catchphrase "I'm bringing sexy back".

Numerous artists cite him as an influence, including Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Lorde, Rosalía, and Jungkook. Nick Jonas has said he admires how Timberlake balanced acting and singing. Music publications consider Justified the standard for post-boy-band solo albums.

Over his solo career he has sold more than 32 million albums and 56 million singles worldwide. He has won ten Grammy Awards, four Emmy Awards, seven American Music Awards, three Brit Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, and eleven MTV Video Music Awards. In October 2015 he became the youngest member of the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. He earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on the 30th of April 2018, reuniting with NSYNC for the ceremony. In 2019 he received the Contemporary Icon Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music.

His business interests range widely. In 2005 he launched the William Rast clothing line with childhood friend Trace Ayala. The pair cited Elvis Presley as inspiration. In 2007 he bought the Big Creek Golf Course in Millington, Tennessee, and redeveloped it as the eco-friendly Mirimichi Golf Course for around $16 million. He sold it in 2014 for $500,000. He and Biel are minority owners of the Memphis Grizzlies. In 2018, he designed his own Air Jordan 3 with Nike designer Tinker Hatfield and debuted it at his halftime show. In May 2022 he sold the rights to his entire musical catalog, around 200 songs, to Hipgnosis Song Management for $100 million.

He has also given back. Since 2001, his Justin Timberlake Foundation has funded music education programs in schools. In 2008, he became host of the PGA Tour's Las Vegas tournament, renamed the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. And in January 2026, at the Recording Academy Honours tribute to Pharrell Williams, he performed three songs Williams had produced for him. Among them was "Like I Love You", the single he had first sung in 2002.
