  • The first ceremony took place on the 18th of October 1977 at the Wembley Conference Centre. It was called The BRITish Record Industry BRITannia Awards to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. Thames Television broadcast the event, and The Beatles won Album of the Year for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The awards did not become an annual tradition until 1982 when the British Phonographic Industry established them as a yearly fixture. In 1989, organizers renamed the event The BRIT Awards. Mastercard has served as the long-term sponsor since then. An equivalent ceremony for classical music known as Classic BRIT Awards ran from 2000 to 2013 before being revived in 2018.

  • Live television broadcasts ended after the 1989 show hosted by Samantha Fox and Mick Fleetwood. That year's live transmission suffered from unprepared hosts and technical failures that critics widely condemned. From 1990 through 2006, producers recorded the ceremony and aired it the following night. ITV began broadcasting the awards live again starting in 2007 on February 14. Earls Court in London hosted the final ceremony there on the 16th of February 2010. The O2 Arena became the new home for the event beginning in 2011. BBC Radio 1 started providing backstage coverage in 2008. A launch show called The BRITs Are Coming airs annually in January to reveal nominees.

  • Jarvis Cocker of Pulp mounted the stage during Michael Jackson's 1996 performance to protest the pop star's Christ-like presentation. Cocker lifted his shirt and pointed his backside at Jackson while running across the stage. Police questioned him but decided not to prosecute. In 1992, The KLF won Best British Group alongside Simply Red before hijacking their own award acceptance. They performed a death metal version of 3 a.m. Eternal with flame-throwers and Bill Drummond firing blanks over the audience. Later that evening, they buried their BRIT Award statuette at Stonehenge after dumping a dead sheep outside an after-party venue. Danbert Nobacon of Chumbawamba poured a bucket of iced water over Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott in 1998.

  • Geri Halliwell wore a Union Jack dress during the Spice Girls' 1997 performance of Who Do You Think You Are. Her sister sewed the flag onto what was originally meant to be an all-black outfit. Halliwell later sold the dress for £41,320 to Hard Rock Cafe Las Vegas. Adele performed Someone Like You at the 2011 ceremony accompanied only by piano lights focused solely on her and the instrument. The emotional rendition earned a standing ovation from the O2 Arena crowd and pushed the song up 46 spots on the UK charts. Madonna fell down stairs during her 2015 Living for Love performance when her cape cord failed to separate properly. She paused briefly before continuing despite hitting the stage hard.

  • Robbie Williams holds the record with 13 awards as a solo artist plus five more as part of Take That. Little Mix became the first female group to win British Group since 1977 at the 2021 ceremony. Raye broke multiple records at the 2024 event by receiving seven nominations and winning six awards in one night. Coldplay leads all acts with 32 total nominations across their career. Adele has won 12 awards making her the most awarded female act in history. Harry Styles won Album of the Year in 2023 while Charli XCX took home four awards including Best Dance Act in 2025.

  • The voting academy consists of over 1,000 music industry members who use a secure online website to cast ballots. Electoral Reform Services scrutinizes every vote submitted through this system. Fan voting was abolished after 2019 but returned in 2022. Current categories include British Album of the Year, British Artist of the Year, and Rising Star Award among others. Defunct categories like British Male Solo Artist ran from 1982 until 2021. The Official Charts Company compiles eligible artists before submitting them to the voting body. Special awards such as Global Success Award appear periodically alongside standard honors.
