Horizon (video game series)

8 sections
  • Horizon is a science fiction game series from the Amsterdam studio Guerrilla Games, and by November 2025 it had sold over 40 million units worldwide. That figure places it among Sony's best-selling first-party properties. Its setting is the United States of the 31st century, where forests have reclaimed the ruins of a forgotten civilisation. Animal-like machines now dominate the landscape, and human tribes hunt them with tribal weapons and cunning.

How did a studio that spent years on linear shooters end up building this world? What does it take to design a robot that moves like a living animal? And why do scholars argue over whether this world criticises capitalism or quietly rehearses it?

  • Killzone 3 came out in 2011, and Guerrilla Games soon began imagining its next project. The studio's leaders wanted a vibrant setting instead of the dystopian tone of the Killzone series. Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment, for its part, wanted a Western role-playing game in its lineup. The team chose from roughly 40 internal pitches. The winner came from art director Jan-Bart van Beek and rested on three pillars: nature, robotic dinosaurs, and a strong female protagonist.

A prototype team of 10 to 20 people began the work. The rest of the studio arrived after finishing Killzone Shadow Fall in late 2013. Zero Dawn ultimately cost over €45 million and involved roughly 270 internal employees. Another 18 outside studios helped, among them Singapore-based Virtuos and the Serbian studio 3Lateral.

The jump from linear shooters to an open world, where players roam a large environment freely, was a big one. Guerrilla avoided complicated role-playing statistics so that the game stayed accessible. To make the tribes believable, the team consulted anthropologists and researched how tribal cultures form. Their main inspirations were two books by Jared Diamond: Guns, Germs, and Steel from 1997 and Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed from 2005. Despite the far-future setting, characters mostly speak plain English, because the developers wanted to avoid jargon.

In 2016 Guerrilla formally named the engine it had modified for the project: Decima. It generated foliage and rivers procedurally, while rock formations were crafted by hand. A system of data maps tracked changing environmental conditions across the terrain. A world like this still needed someone to walk through it, and the first idea for that person did not work.

  • Early prototypes gave the protagonist, Aloy, a rifle. Developers replaced it with tribal weaponry, which suited the naturalistic setting far better. They also designed her as an agile outcast and steered clear of the oversexualised female characters common in the industry. Then market testing delivered a verdict. Her early design had what the developers described as a "Disney Princess" quality. The art team spent two years iterating on her concept art, aiming for someone older and more grounded in survivalism.

Dutch actress Hannah Hoekstra supplied the model for Aloy's face. American actress Ashly Burch performed her voice, while physical motion capture actresses handled her in-game stunts. Burch's role grew over time. For The Frozen Wilds expansion, she performed full-body motion capture as Aloy for the first time, studying base game footage to match the character's traversal animations. After player feedback about how characters interacted, the team also recorded Burch and Lance Reddick together in the studio.

Reddick played Sylens, a pragmatist, and reviewers have consistently praised his performance. They also credit Burch's nuanced delivery with anchoring the series. In their view she captured Aloy's path from isolated outcast to confident leader. Her history reaches back into a much earlier century, and it is stranger than her looks suggest.

  • Horizon Zero Dawn reached North America on the 28th of February 2017. Europe, Australia and New Zealand followed on the 1st of March, and Asia on the 2nd, all for the PlayStation 4. The game follows Aloy, a young outcast of the Nora tribe, through a United States overrun by robotic creatures. Her search for answers about her origins ends in a shock. She is a clone of Elisabet Sobeck, a 21st-century scientist.

The old world ended when a plague of self-replicating military robots, built by Faro Automated Solutions, destroyed it. Sobeck responded with Project Zero Dawn, an artificial intelligence system led by GAIA and designed to restore life to Earth. With help from a mysterious ally named Sylens, Aloy must stop HADES, a rogue subfunction of that system, from triggering another mass extinction. A fanatic cult called the Eclipse stands in her way.

The Frozen Wilds, a downloadable expansion, arrived on the 7th of November 2017. Aloy travels to a snowy region called the Cut to investigate the Daemon, a new threat that corrupts local machines. She enlists the Banuk tribe and their shaman, Ourea, to reach a ruined volcanic facility within Thunder's Drum. Inside, she learns that the Daemon is HEPHAESTUS, another rogue subfunction of GAIA. She must stop it from taking over CYAN, an ancient AI that governs the Yellowstone Caldera.

Horizon Forbidden West followed on the 18th of February 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The story is set six months after Zero Dawn. Aloy travels to the western coast to investigate a deadly blight. There she clashes with the Far Zeniths, technologically advanced humans who fled Earth a millennium ago. They have returned to steal a copy of GAIA.

Ben McCaw, the narrative director, built the sequel around the pressure Aloy felt in living up to her predecessor's legacy. He introduced Beta, a newly discovered cloned sister who serves as a sullen, isolated dark reflection of Aloy. With Beta, her friends and local tribes, Aloy defeats the Zeniths. Then she learns that they were fleeing something worse. Nemesis, a vengeful, world-ending AI, destroyed the Zenith colony and is now hurtling toward Earth.

Burning Shores, released on the 19th of April 2023, was exclusive to the PlayStation 5. Aloy travels to the volcanic ruins of Los Angeles to track down Walter Londra, the last surviving member of Far Zenith. Her partner is Seyka, a Quen marine. Together they discover that Londra has brainwashed stranded Quen into a cult. He wants them to help him rebuild a ship and flee Earth, at the expense of the local population. Aloy defeats him inside a reactivated Horus and begins preparing for Nemesis.

Critics watched Aloy change along the way. Several found her increasingly abrasive in Forbidden West, and many disliked how often she spoiled environmental puzzles before the player could try them. An accessibility update released alongside Burning Shores addressed that complaint. Her growing bond with Seyka was welcomed as a necessary maturation. The optional same-sex romance drew a coordinated review-bombing campaign on Metacritic, while the advocacy group GLAAD commended its authentic representation.

Sam Loveridge of GamesRadar+ saw something deeper in the series. By framing Aloy's relationship with Sobeck as a reconciliation with a flawed predecessor rather than worship of an idol, Loveridge argued, the narrative explores the breaking of generational trauma.

  • Robotics engineers from the Delft University of Technology advised the art team on how a practical robot animal would be built. Guerrilla designed each machine around a functional ecological role. The engineers recommended an exoskeleton rather than an internal skeleton. That choice gave the machines visual durability and logical weak points for combat.

Animators studied wildlife documentaries so that movement felt grounded in real animal motion. The avian Stormbird, for instance, received feather-like wing components to suit its role as an agile scavenger of the skies. The Tyrannosaurus rex-inspired Thunderjaw served as the franchise's first proof of concept. It took 18 months to go from a sketch to a working model in the game.

Hunting begins with the Focus, a wearable augmented reality device. It scans the surroundings and reveals enemy vulnerabilities, patrol paths and hidden objects. Players fight with bows and slingshots at range and a spear up close. Instead of traditional firearms, the game rewards tactical aiming at specific machine components. Hitting the right part disables an attack or strips away armour. Traps, tripwires and tethers that pin large enemies to the ground add further options.

Enemy AI was designed to evoke the feel of a real hunt. It is lenient when it first detects the player but difficult to evade once fully engaged. Stealth matters as well, since tall foliage lets the player hide and ambush. The spear can also hack certain machines, turning them into temporary allies or mounts. Exploring underground ruins unlocks the ability to hack a wider variety of them.

Mobility grew across the games. Basic mounts were joined by a grappling hook, a glider and underwater exploration. Motorised boats and flying mounts that can dive beneath the water's surface came later. Experience points unlock skills in trees that expanded as the series went on, and skilful play earns combat points for temporary cinematic special abilities. Resources from defeated machines become ammunition, traps and healing potions. Rarer parts are needed to buy and upgrade higher-tier weapons and tribal outfits.

Dan Silver of The Guardian found the loop of scanning for weaknesses, setting traps and targeting components to be "endurably exhilarating". Reviewers often named the simplistic melee combat and the fights against human enemies as the weakest parts. Some also noticed a creeping mechanical bloat in Forbidden West, where expanded skill trees, convoluted weapon variants and upgrade grinds could overwhelm. Later entries did rework melee so that it blends with ranged attacks, and they added gauntlets that launch discs.

  • Development on Forbidden West began in 2018. In early 2019 Guerrilla moved into a new five-story studio space in Amsterdam, and its internal workforce grew past 300 full-time employees. Production cost approximately US$212 million. The studio delayed release to 2022 to absorb disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic and to avoid mandatory overtime. The sequel also expanded its cinematic casting with actors Carrie-Anne Moss and Angela Bassett.

As the studio's first cross-generation release, Forbidden West forced a juggling act. Guerrilla first pushed the visual fidelity of the PlayStation 5, then devoted resources to matching it on the PlayStation 4. Developers nearly scrapped the aerial mounts, fearing the older console could not stream environments fast enough. Lead character artist Bastien Ramisse raised the polygon density of the character models. That allowed more accurate facial capture and the rendering of fine vellus hair. The Decima engine adopted the open-source Jolt physics engine and gained a system for three-dimensional cloud formations.

Designers overhauled the skill trees and introduced Valor Surges to support distinct playstyles. Human enemies became more aggressive, and hostile factions could now commandeer machines and ride them into battle. For accessibility, a dedicated strike team built over 80 settings. They included a Co-Pilot control system, bespoke difficulty sliders and audio toggles for tinnitus effects.

For The Frozen Wilds, designers took geographic inspiration from Yellowstone National Park and used its hydrothermal pools to contrast with the snowy terrain. The engine gained real-time snow deformation and interactive water rendering. The character Gildun was built to justify a chain of mechanical failures that the player fixes inside a ruined dam. Animators gave his model 108 additional bones so that his thick, fur-lined clothing moved realistically. New machines drew on footage of polar bears and red pandas, and the sound team mixed synthetic noises with walrus and seal vocalisations. The enemy AI was also altered to make stealth harder, forcing players to commit to the fights they start.

Burning Shores dropped PlayStation 4 support entirely. That let developers use the PlayStation 5 solid-state drive for fast aerial streaming and build city environments inside the seismically fractured ruins of Los Angeles. The stronger processor kept a specialised, high-quality lighting setup on Aloy during normal play, a feature once restricted to cutscenes. Flyable volumetric clouds demanded low-level code optimisations. The final boss, a reanimated Horus, had over a thousand more articulation joints than the base game's machines. New climbing technology kept Aloy's model aligned with its moving parts.

Senior Foley artist Joanna Fang broke the environmental audio down into granular sounds to give weight to volcanic terrain and water travel. To navigate the flooded archipelago, developers introduced the Waterwing, a flying machine that can dive beneath the surface. They also added a thalassophobia mode for accessibility.

Sony loosened its strict console exclusivity by bringing the mainline games to Windows. Guerrilla partnered with Virtuos to adapt Zero Dawn for PC, and it reached Steam and the Epic Games Store on the 7th of August 2020. GOG followed on the 24th of November. In 2021 Sony acquired Nixxes Software to strengthen its PC pipeline. Nixxes handled the Windows port of Forbidden West, released on the 21st of March 2024.

Nixxes then co-developed Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered with Guerrilla, released on the 31st of October 2024. It brought updated character models, improved lighting, and over ten hours of re-recorded dialogue with new motion capture data. DualSense haptic feedback was added too. Forbidden West's accessibility options were retroactively integrated, introducing new haptic and audio cues for interactable elements.

  • Horizon Call of the Mountain launched on the 22nd of February 2023 as a launch title for the PlayStation VR2 headset. Guerrilla co-developed it with Firesprite. Players take the role of Ryas, a disgraced former Shadow Carja rebel and master climber. He is offered a pardon in exchange for investigating a surge in machine aggression within the Sundom. He discovers that Asera, a rogue Oseram engineer, has built lures to draw an army of machines into an assault on Meridian, the Carja capital. Ryas eventually finds his missing brother Urid, thwarts Asera's revenge plot and earns his freedom.

Unlike the mainline entries, it was built from the ground up in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4 to showcase the headset. Eye-tracking combined with foveated rendering directed processing power to wherever the player looked. The first-person view changed how large the machines felt, so the team remodelled and reanimated them for close-quarters combat. Haptic feedback in the controllers and the headset simulated massive machines walking nearby. To ease motion sickness, the team conceptualised a gesture-based arm-swinger scheme as an alternative to analogue stick movement. Players draw the bow with motion controllers and climb with twin pickaxes. Critics praised the renewed sense of scale but felt locked-track combat arenas limited freedom, and some found the repetitive climbing tedious. On Metacritic it holds 79/100.

Lego Horizon Adventures arrived on the 14th of November 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Windows and Nintendo Switch. Guerrilla built it with Studio Gobo in collaboration with The Lego Group. It retells Zero Dawn as a family-friendly comedy. Aloy is joined by Varl, Teersa and Erend against sun-worshipping cultists led by Helis, while the group works to rebuild its village, Mother's Heart. Built in Unreal Engine 5 from individual digital Lego bricks, its characters are animated in stop motion to echo The Lego Movie from 2014.

The writers hired comedy writer Mark Llabres Hill to lean into slapstick and self-referential humour. Ashly Burch and other returning voice actors adjusted their performances to suit the comedy, while Tim Russ was cast as Sylens following Lance Reddick's death. Narrative director James Windeler said that bringing a first-party PlayStation franchise to a Nintendo console was a deliberate strategy to reach a broader, family-oriented audience. Reviewers criticised combat that devolved into repetitive, chaotic skirmishes and missed open-world exploration and puzzle-solving. Katharine Castle of Eurogamer and Sarah Thwaites of TechRadar argued that constant parody undermined the emotional weight of the source material. Its Metacritic score is 70/100, which the site labels "mixed or average".

Horizon Steel Frontiers, unveiled in November 2025, is a free-to-play MMORPG developed and published by NCSoft for Windows, Android and iOS. It is the first game in the series not to be released on a PlayStation console. The action moves to the Deadlands, a southern region inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. Archery gives way to a touchscreen melee targeting system, and the structure of player versus environment missions draws on the Monster Hunter series.

Horizon Hunters Gathering was announced in February 2026. Guerrilla is developing it in-house for the PlayStation 5 and Windows, with Arjan Bak directing. Up to three players team up as machine hunters for replayable missions, with a roguelite perk system. The game returns to the Decima engine and trades photorealism for a stylised, cartoonish look. In April 2023 Guerrilla confirmed that a third mainline entry continuing Aloy's story is in development. Industry reports in February 2026 suggested it could be three to five years away, since the studio's main resources went to Hunters Gathering.

Aloy has also appeared in other games. She was a playable character in the PlayStation 4 version of Monster Hunter: World in 2018. She made cameos in Astro's Playroom in 2020 and received a full level in Astro Bot in 2024. She joined Fortnite Battle Royale on the 15th of April 2021. That September she was given free to PlayStation players of Genshin Impact, and in December she became an unlockable Fall Guys costume.

Titan Comics began publishing Horizon stories in 2020 with a four-issue miniseries, The Sunhawk. It follows Talanah, the newly appointed Sunhawk, who leaves Meridian to hunt a black-armoured Clawstrider. She allies with a Carja hunter named Amadis, and the comic bridges the gap to Forbidden West. A second four-issue miniseries, Liberation, ran from July 2021 to January 2022. Aloy and Erend hunt Korl, an Oseram assassin linked to the death of Erend's sister, Ersa. The hunt frames Erend's account of the "Liberation of Meridian". In it, Ersa escapes Carja captivity, befriends Prince Avad and unites the Oseram and Carja resistance to overthrow the Mad Sun-King Jiran. Anne Toole, one of the game's writers, co-created and wrote both comics.

Steamforged Games announced Horizon Zero Dawn: The Board Game, a licensed co-operative tabletop game, in August 2018. Kickstarter backers funded it in less than two hours, and it was released in 2020. The expansion The Sacred Land followed in September 2021. A second game based on Forbidden West, Seeds of Rebellion, was funded on Kickstarter in November 2023. It explores never-before-seen canon events leading up to the game. In late 2025, Magic: The Gathering released six cards based on Forbidden West as part of its Secret Lair Drops.

In May 2022, a live action Horizon series was announced for Netflix, in development at PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures Television. Steve Blackman was to write and produce it under his Irish Cowboy banner, with Aloy as the expected lead. Writing was underway by January 2024. By that June the series was no longer moving forward. A January 2023 HR complaint had become public, in which twelve former Umbrella Academy writers and support staffers accused Blackman of "toxic, bullying, manipulative, and retaliatory behavior".

In January 2025, Sony announced a film adaptation of Zero Dawn at PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures. In October 2025, a statement filed in a lawsuit against Tencent gave an update. PlayStation Productions president Asad Qizilbash said the company had a working script and was searching for a director. The plan was to start shooting in 2026 for a release in 2027.

  • Zero Dawn sold over 24.3 million units by April 2023, making it one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games. Forbidden West sold over 8.4 million copies within its first year. On Metacritic, the aggregator of reviews, Zero Dawn holds 89/100 and Forbidden West holds 88/100.

Lucy O'Brien of IGN described the first game's landscape as stunningly realised, and Phil Hornshaw of GameSpot commended the sequel's detailed environments. Oliver Mackenzie of Digital Foundry called the rendering techniques of Burning Shores a visual masterclass. Technical complaints were fewer. The PC port of Zero Dawn suffered initial optimisation issues. Zero Dawn Remastered drew criticism for a mandatory PlayStation Network login and audio-visual glitches at launch.

The audio team described its approach as "natural-fiction". Composers Joris de Man, The Flight, and Niels van der Leest deliberately avoided science fiction blockbuster tropes in favour of an intimate, organic soundscape. They blended sparse cellos and contrabass flutes with synthesised, circuit-bent sounds, mirroring primitive tribes living beside advanced machinery. The Zero Dawn soundtrack won Best Original Video Game Score at the Ivor Novello Awards, along with multiple Game Audio Network Guild Awards.

For the sequel, composer Oleksa Lozowchuk joined the team. He wrote distinct acoustic and percussive themes to set apart tribes such as the agrarian Utaru and the militant Tenakth. The score earned nominations at the 26th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards and the Ivor Novello Awards. Critics singled out the lyricless vocals of singer Julie Elven as a defining pillar of the series' identity, capturing Aloy's vulnerability and growing strength.

The writing divided critics more than the sound did. The central mystery of Zero Dawn was widely praised for grounding complex science fiction ideas in a tribal setting. The Frozen Wilds split opinion. Some enjoyed its deeper Banuk lore and themes of faith, while others found the plot underwhelming and disconnected from the wider mythology.

Simon Cardy of IGN and Ari Notis of Kotaku both compared the side quests of Forbidden West to those of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from 2015. Yet Notis and fellow Kotaku writer Ethan Gach felt the main narrative's sudden shift detracted from the world's grounded tribal conflicts. Ben Rayner of Digital Spy agreed, arguing that the pivot toward hard science fiction and immortal billionaires missed the point of the franchise.

Holly Green of The A.V. Club argued that Zero Dawn and The Frozen Wilds uncomfortably appropriated Native American imagery and sometimes relied on the "white savior" trope. Dia Lacina, a Native American writer, similarly argued that some tribal terminology was disrespectful. In an interview with Vice, narrative director John Gonzalez said the terminology had been discussed during the creative process. He added that the developers did not base the tribes on any single real-world group but looked at people from around the world and across different time periods.

Scholars have examined the series through ecofeminism and posthumanism, praising its ethics of care and its picture of symbiosis between humanity and nature. Educational studies have used it to counteract gender stereotypes. Natalie J. Swain argued that it follows standpoint theory by forcing players to inhabit the worldview of a social outcast.

Andrei Nae and Eirini Bourontzi pushed back. In their reading, a loop of hunting and dismantling machines for resources makes Aloy a "colonial entrepreneur", contradicting the ecological message. They added that the in-game economy "naturalises capitalism" even as the story critiques neoliberalism and unregulated corporate governance. Ian Faith defended the same loop as a "hybrid ecology", in which harvesting machines is a healthy, low-waste symbiosis. Alenda Y. Chang looked outside the game altogether, to the massive server infrastructure and outsourced global labour needed to render its detailed mechanical ecosystems.
