Far Cry
Far Cry, the first-person shooter franchise published by Ubisoft, began life as an island full of dinosaurs. At the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 1999, the German studio Crytek showed a technology demo called X-Isle: Dinosaur Island. Users could roam a virtual tropical island populated by dinosaurs, and the point was to prove how large a world Crytek's software could handle. As of 2025, that showpiece has grown into six mainline games, a standalone expansion and a long line of spin-offs. This documentary asks how a graphics demo became a franchise, and why Crytek ended up outside it. It asks why the games almost never share a hero, a villain or a plot. And it asks what Ubisoft held constant while nearly everything else changed.
Nvidia, the graphics chip maker, signed on after the show. The demo had been aimed squarely at Nvidia processors, and Crytek secured a deal to ship X-Isle alongside Nvidia cards as benchmarking software. The reason was simple. At that moment, CryEngine was the most demanding game engine on the market.
Realistic outdoor spaces with long viewing distances were the engine's calling card, and few rivals could match them. Ubisoft saw a game in that technology. It struck a deal with Crytek to build X-Isle out into a full AAA title and took the publishing rights.
Jack Carver is the hero of the game that emerged. He is an ex-special forces operative who ends up on a mysterious archipelago in Micronesia, hunting for the journalist who traveled with him and vanished. Mercenaries control the islands. As Carver explores, he uncovers genetic experiments on the local wildlife, run by Dr. Krieger and the Krieger Corporation. Their goal is to create powerful Trigen Beasts as weapons to sell to mercenaries.
Far Cry arrived on Microsoft Windows on the 23rd of March 2004. Reviewers praised its visuals, its mechanics and the freedom it gave the player. It sold 730,000 units within four months. Crytek, however, already had its eye on a different publisher.
In July 2004, Crytek signed a deal with Electronic Arts, a direct competitor of Ubisoft, to develop a new gaming franchise. That franchise became Crysis, and it let Crytek keep improving CryEngine. With its creators committed elsewhere, Ubisoft gave the job of bringing Far Cry to game consoles to its own studio, Ubisoft Montreal. The results were Far Cry Instincts and Far Cry Vengeance.
Consoles of that era were less powerful than personal computers and stumbled on the wide open levels of the original. Ubisoft Montreal therefore had to rework much of the game. The levels became more linear, and the console versions gained new campaigns and multiplayer modes. In some cases the story was bent toward less realistic outcomes. Those changes are why the console versions count as standalone releases.
Far Cry Instincts: Evolution reached the Xbox on the 27th of March 2006. Its single-player campaign was considerably shorter than the one in Instincts. It added new weapons, vehicles, an expanded mapmaker and an extra multiplayer mode. Maps built on the Xbox version of Instincts could not be moved to the Xbox 360 version.
That same month, Ubisoft acquired all rights to the Far Cry series, along with a perpetual license to the version of CryEngine used for the original game. Ubisoft Montreal stayed on as the principal studio for every later entry. Its first sequel, announced in July 2007, would break with the original in two big ways.
Dunia was the name Ubisoft Montreal gave to its modified version of the licensed CryEngine, and Far Cry 2 was its debut. The engine was built alongside the game. It was meant to support a fully open world, with realistic physics and destroyable environments.
Nine playable characters replaced the single hero of the original. The developers also gave the game an advanced artificial intelligence system, so players could make their own stories with the non-player characters they met. Dropping the old story had reasons. Jack Carver had not been memorable to players. The ending of the first game, especially in the console versions, had turned toward science fiction, and the team wanted to avoid that.
The setting changed too. After the console versions, Ubisoft felt players might be tired of tropical islands. It also feared that Crytek's project with Electronic Arts would be set somewhere tropical. So the game moved to the plains of Africa.
A fictional African country in the middle of a civil war is where the player lands, as a mercenary for hire. An arms smuggler known as the Jackal is selling weapons to both factions and inflaming the conflict. The mercenary is sent to find and kill him. The sandbox offered 50 km2 of savannah, forest, animals and towns.
Far Cry 2 was released in October 2008. It sold about three million copies within four months. Critics praised its setting, visuals and open-ended play, but some faulted the writing, the artificial intelligence and technical problems.
Clint Hocking, the game's director, later noted that much of the design had been haphazard behind the scenes. Players split over the mechanics meant to make the world feel real. Malaria struck without warning, hitting the character's vision and movement until medicine was taken. Guns picked up from enemies wore down and broke. Checkpoints could be cleared, then filled with enemies again minutes later. A buddy could be called to help in battle, but only briefly, and not again until the player rested at a safe house.
Many of the development leads for Far Cry 2 left the studio in the years after it shipped. The next game would be shaped by a changed team.
Vaas Montenegro, a pirate who has tortured the native population of the Rook Islands, is the face of Far Cry 3. The player is Jason Brody, an ordinary American tourist whose vacation goes badly wrong. Vaas and his gang capture Brody's friends, planning to sell them into slavery. Brody must learn the ways of the jungle to get them back.
Behind Vaas stood a deliberate reset. Pre-production reportedly began just after Far Cry 2 shipped, with a narrative sequel in mind. The team instead returned to a tropical island, kept the open world, and replaced the multiple player-characters with one hero they could write a strong story around. A new Dunia 2 engine brought a weather system. Several of the questionable gameplay features from Far Cry 2 were removed. A well-defined villain at the center of the game then became the pattern, with each later entry built around a similarly crafted character.
Far Cry 3 was announced in 2011 and released in November 2012. Some of its narrative choices were controversial, yet it earned critical acclaim and nominations for year-end honors including Game of the Year and Best Shooter. It sold nearly ten million copies over its lifetime.
Kyrat, a fictional country in the Himalayas, is the stage for Far Cry 4 in 2014. Its ruler is a despotic, self-appointed king named Pagan Min. The hero, Ajay Ghale, returns from the United States to scatter his late mother's ashes and is pulled into a civil war. The game began as a direct sequel to Far Cry 3 before becoming a standalone story. Parts of its plot drew on the Nepalese Civil War of 1996-2006. Critics found its story divisive and its design short on innovation, yet it had the biggest launch in franchise history, with seven million copies sold by the end of 2014.
Hope County, a fictional corner of Montana, is where Far Cry 5 begins, released on the 27th of March 2018. A doomsday cult called the Project at Eden's Gate, led by "The Father" Joseph Seed and his siblings, controls the area. The player is a customizable sheriff's deputy caught between the cult and the residents resisting it. The team drew on events such as the Cold War and the September 11 attacks, and tried to capture the despondent mood that followed. The announcement came during heightened political conflict, which brought controversy. It became the fastest-selling title in the franchise, grossing over $310 million in its first week.
Yara, a fictional island loosely based on modern-day Cuba, is the setting of Far Cry 6, released on the 7th of October 2021. Dictator Antón Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito, wants to groom his son Diego, played by Anthony Gonzalez, as his heir. Against them stands the guerilla fighter Dani Rojas, a fully voiced protagonist. The story was inspired by recent revolutions, chiefly the Cuban Revolution of 1953-1959. Reviews were mixed, praising the setting, visuals and Esposito's performance while criticizing the lack of innovation and an aging design. Smaller games built on these same maps had already shown that the formula could stretch much further.
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon reached players in May 2013, after Ubisoft announced it on the previous April Fools' Day. Dean Evans developed this standalone experiment, which reskinned existing maps and geometry from Far Cry 3 rather than continuing its story. The tone was tongue-in-cheek and steeped in 1980s culture. Its look and plot nod to action films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, such as Commando, The Terminator and Predator, and Sylvester Stallone, such as Cobra, First Blood and Rocky IV. Other references include RoboCop, Escape from New York, Scarface and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
News of the game leaked from the Brazilian ratings board, which gave it an 18+ certification for references to violence, sex and drugs. Pre-orders of the PC version came with a digital copy of the soundtrack by Power Glove, a group based in Melbourne, Australia. The game sold more than 1 million units. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said it might also get a retail release. A crossover with the Trials series, Trials of the Blood Dragon, followed in June 2016, and a remastered Blood Dragon sits in the season pass for Far Cry 6.
Not every side project came from Ubisoft's own studios. Gameloft developed and published a top-down shooter version of Far Cry 2 for mobile phones. Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity, released on the 1st of June 2021, is a virtual reality game set in the same tropical location as Far Cry 3. Vaas Montenegro returns as its central antagonist. Vaas would also turn up on screens far from any console.
Uwe Boll directed a direct-to-video Far Cry film in 2008, starring Til Schweiger as Jack Carver. In it, Carver is an ex-special forces soldier turned boatman, hired by a journalist to investigate a top-secret military base on a nearby island. Most critics said it did the games no justice.
Vaas was the star of The Far Cry Experience, a four-part webseries released in 2012 as a prequel to Far Cry 3. Michael Mando plays Vaas. Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays a fictionalized version of himself, who is captured by Vaas and his pirates and becomes the subject of a torture show. In 2013, it was reported that Ubisoft Motion Pictures had a Far Cry film in development, alongside Watch Dogs and Raving Rabbids films. No news about the project has emerged since. A short film, Inside Eden's Gate, followed on the 5th of March 2018 as a prequel to Far Cry 5. It follows three filmmakers who investigate rumors about the cult and meet Joseph Seed, played by Greg Bryk, and the rest of the Seed family. In November 2025, it was announced that Noah Hawley and Rob Mac would co-create a new adaptation for FX. Mac will also star, and the show is planned as an anthology, like the franchise itself.
Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is an animated series developed by Ubisoft with Adi Shankar. It was announced in June 2021 as a Netflix production, with Bobbypills leading the animation and Balak as creative director. It was released on the 19th of October 2023. On the 20th of September 2021, the board game publisher Funforge was announced as Ubisoft's partner on a board game called Far Cry Beyond.
Michael T. Bhatty wrote German-language novels for the series. Far Cry: Gotterdammerung, published by Panini in 2007, is an expanded novelization of the original game. Far Cry 2: Blutige Diamanten, from 2008, is a prequel to Far Cry 2. Urban Waite later wrote Far Cry: Absolution, a prequel to Far Cry 5, in 2018.
Comics took the villains seriously as characters. Far Cry: Rite of Passage, a 2021 miniseries from Dark Horse Comics, ties in with Far Cry 6. In it, Antón Castillo tells his son Diego cautionary tales about the rise and fall of Vaas Montenegro, Pagan Min and Joseph Seed. Two 2021 manga one-shots from Jump, made with Ubisoft, include Happy Vaas Day by Hiromu Nagase, which depicts a young Vaas, and Inside, in which a young man plays Far Cry 4 and ponders the morality of its characters. Ablaze published Far Cry: Esperanza's Tears, a prequel comic to Far Cry 6, in October 2022.
Descriptions of the series keep returning to "a lawless frontier" where "values and laws of today are non-functional." Every game drops the player into wilderness and sets them against one or more despots who rule the region. Wild animals roam the open spaces, and survival involves hunting and crafting. The player often fights beside freedom fighters trying to take a region back from a ruling party, and may play opposing sides against each other. Some games are rooted in realistic conflicts, while others bring in the supernatural or science fiction.
Ubisoft Montreal treats all the games as sharing one fictional universe, and has reused some minor characters to keep that thread alive. Even so, the studio expects each game to be enjoyable on its own, with no knowledge of the others. The games offer a single-player campaign, with co-operative campaigns in later titles. They also include competitive multiplayer and tools that let users edit the maps for those matches.
Critics have generally welcomed the games, praising the open world and the antagonists while faulting a lack of innovation. Ubisoft reports that lifetime sales exceeded 20 million units through 2014. By September 2019 the series had accumulated a combined 50 million units, and it is considered a commercial success.
In November 2021, reports emerged that the next Far Cry would be a live-service game, similar to Ubisoft's plans for the Assassin's Creed project codenamed Infinity. Around the same time, Dan Hay, executive producer of the series since Far Cry 3, announced his departure from Ubisoft Montreal. Ubisoft has yet to formally announce any game after Far Cry 6.
