  • Dakota Mayi Johnson was born on the 4th of October 1989 in Austin, Texas, while her father, the actor Don Johnson, was shooting the film The Hot Spot in the state. Few people have a birth that lines up so neatly with the family trade.

Johnson grew up to become an American actress whose credits stretch from romance to horror to crime drama. She has also moved into producing and directing, and she has a way with interviewers that audiences share online.

Several questions run through her story. How does the child of two actors build a career of her own? What happens when the role that makes you famous is the one critics mock? And why do viewers argue so fiercely over whether she is one of the most underrated performers working today?

  • Melanie Griffith, her mother, and Tippi Hedren, her maternal grandmother, were both actresses. Her grandfather Peter Griffith was an advertising executive and a former child actor. Johnson is also a half-niece of actress Tracy Griffith and of production designer Clay A. Griffith. Antonio Banderas, her mother's later husband, was her stepfather for a time.

Her family tree is tangled. Each of her parents had children by three different people, which gives her six half-siblings. Jesse Johnson, born in 1982, is her father's son with Patti D'Arbanville. Alexander Bauer, born in 1985, is her mother's son with Steven Bauer. Stella Banderas, born in 1996, came from her mother's marriage to Banderas. Grace, Jasper and Deacon Johnson, born in 1999-2002 and 2006, are her father's children with Kelley Phleger.

Because her parents worked on location, Johnson spent much of her childhood at film sets and premieres. She also spent time in Aspen and Woody Creek, Colorado, where her neighbor was the writer Hunter S. Thompson. In her teens she worked summers at the local market, and for a time she attended the Aspen Community School.

For her first year of high school she went to the Santa Catalina School in Monterey, California. She then transferred to the private New Roads School in Santa Monica. Looking back, she said: "I was so consistently unmoored and discombobulated, I didn't have an anchor anywhere."

  • At age 12, Johnson joined a Teen Vogue photo shoot with the children of other celebrities, and that day sparked her interest in modeling. While she attended high school in Santa Monica, modeling earned her an income.

Acting was the real draw. She had spent long hours on film sets with her parents, yet they discouraged her from pursuing it until she finished high school. Around age 14 she also began to struggle with depression, and she checked into rehabilitation.

After graduation she applied to the Juilliard School. Her audition monologues came from Shakespeare and Steve Martin. Juilliard did not accept her.

In 2006 she was chosen as Miss Golden Globe, the first second-generation Miss Golden Globe in the history of the awards. The same year she signed with IMG Models. Modeling jobs kept arriving alongside her acting ambitions, including a campaign for the jeans line of the brand MANGO in 2009. In 2011 she shot the "Rising Star" campaign for the Australian fashion label Wish.

She studied acting with the teacher Tom Todoroff until 2008. She then signed with the William Morris Agency, and her screen career began in earnest.

  • In 1999 Johnson made her film debut in Crazy in Alabama, a film based on the 1993 novel by Mark Childress. Banderas directed it. She and her half-sister Stella Banderas played the daughters of their real-life mother, Griffith.

The grown-up version of her career started with small parts. David Fincher's The Social Network gave her a minor role in 2010. The fantasy film Beastly followed in 2011, again with a small part.

So Yong Kim's drama For Ellen in 2012 gave her a real starring role, opposite Paul Dano and Jon Heder. It follows a struggling musician in the middle of a custody battle. That year she also played a prep school student in Christopher Neil's independent comedy Goats. She appeared in Nicholas Stoller's The Five-Year Engagement and in the comedy 21 Jump Street. Chris Nelson's film Date and Switch gave her a leading role.

In March 2012 she took a leading role in Ben and Kate, a Fox comedy series. Fox canceled it on the 25th of January 2013 after a single season. In 2013 she turned up as one of the new hires in the series finale of the NBC comedy The Office.

Her small part in Need for Speed in 2014 came just before the casting news that would transform her profile.

  • In February 2015 the erotic romantic drama Fifty Shades of Grey reached cinemas, with Johnson as Anastasia "Ana" Steele. It brought her international recognition. She won the part over Lucy Hale, Felicity Jones, Elizabeth Olsen, Danielle Panabaker and Shailene Woodley.

Asked about gender and her character, she defended Ana. "I completely disagree with people who think Ana's weak," she said. "I think she's actually stronger than he is." She added: "Everything she does is her choice."

Critics widely panned the trilogy, though Johnson often drew praise as its standout performer. Her work in the first film still earned her first Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress, along with a Worst Screen Combo award shared with Jamie Dornan. She was nominated in the same categories for Fifty Shades Darker in 2017 but did not win. In 2018 she returned for the final film, Fifty Shades Freed. On the other side of the ledger, the series brought her a People's Choice Award and an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Breakthrough Performance, plus nominations at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

On the 15th of February 2015 she appeared in the Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary special. Two weeks later, on the 28th of February, she hosted the show itself. That made her the second daughter of a former host to take the job, after Gwyneth Paltrow, whose mother Blythe Danner hosted in the show's seventh season in 1982.

That same year she also played the lead actress in The Weeknd's music video for "Earned It."

  • In Black Mass, released in 2015, Johnson reunited with her 21 Jump Street castmate Johnny Depp. She played the mother of the child of Depp's character. Jessica Kiang of IndieWire said Johnson "makes something of nothing" in the role.

Luca Guadagnino cast her in the 2015 thriller A Bigger Splash, alongside Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts and Ralph Fiennes. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote that her character "has more on her mind than slithering seductively." Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com said the film let her be "both funnier and sexier" than in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Cymbeline, a modern adaptation of the Shakespeare play, also arrived that year, with Johnson as Imogen opposite Ethan Hawke and Ed Harris. In 2016 she led the comedy How to Be Single with Leslie Mann and her Date and Switch co-star Nicholas Braun. For its soundtrack she covered "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" with Zani Jones Mbayise, Vanessa Rubio and Damon Wayans Jr.

In June 2016 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited her to join. She was also nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award that year.

In Suspiria, a 2018 remake of the 1977 film, she played an American dancer in Berlin. Her character enrolls in an academy run by a coven of witches. David Ehrlich of IndieWire called her performance "thrillingly unrepentant." As part of the ensemble she received the Robert Altman Award from the Independent Spirit Awards.

Drew Goddard's neo-noir thriller Bad Times at the El Royale, also from 2018, put her alongside Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm, Cynthia Erivo and Chris Hemsworth. She played a hippie at a resort on the California-Nevada border where several people with suspicious pasts cross paths. Screen Rant ranked her performance fourth best in the film.

Babak Anvari's psychological horror film Wounds premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on the 26th of January 2019. Armie Hammer co-starred, and the story comes from Nathan Ballingrud's novella The Visible Filth.

The Peanut Butter Falcon premiered at South by Southwest on the 9th of March 2019. Shia LaBeouf, Zack Gottsagen and Bruce Dern starred alongside her. It became the highest grossing independent film of the year. While promoting it on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Johnson famously corrected the host on air.

Gabriela Cowperthwaite's drama Our Friend, with Casey Affleck and Jason Segel, tells the real story of Nicole and Matthew Teague. Facing Nicole's coming death, they see their best friend move in to help. Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal said the "intimacy of Ms. Johnson's performance is extraordinary." Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times said she "impresses with affecting range." She also sang on three covers for the soundtrack, including "If I Had the World to Give" by the Grateful Dead.

  • TeaTime Pictures is the production company Johnson founded with Ro Donnelly, a former Netflix development executive. Its aim is to develop films and television series. In December 2021 Boat Rocker Media acquired a minority interest in it.

In 2020 she co-directed, with Cory Bailey, the music video for Coldplay's "Cry Cry Cry." It featured her boyfriend, Chris Martin. That same year The High Note, with Tracee Ellis Ross, reached audiences on the 29th of May. Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post wrote that she was "lovely to look at and can never be accused of overacting." Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun Times called it "maybe her best and certainly most lovable performance."

Maggie Gyllenhaal directed The Lost Daughter in 2021, adapted from Elena Ferrante's novel of the same name. In 2022 Johnson starred in Netflix's adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion. She also co-produced and starred in several smaller films. In Am I Ok?, directed by Stephanie Allynne and Tig Notaro, she played a lesbian character. In Cha Cha Real Smooth, opposite Cooper Raiff, she played a young mother with an autistic child. In Daddio, opposite Sean Penn, she played a cab passenger who has a profound exchange with her driver. Critics and audiences received The Lost Daughter, Persuasion, Cha Cha Real Smooth and Daddio warmly.

In November 2023 she left WME and signed with Creative Artists Agency. Her next project was the title role in the superhero film Madame Web, set in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Made on a budget of $80 million, it failed with critics and at the box office. It earned her a second Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress.

Johnson spoke about the experience with open humor. She said she signed on to a movie whose script was completely different by the end of shooting from the one she attached to. Asked what she could do about it, she answered: "I'm gonna laugh."

In 2025 she played a supporting role in the comedy Splitsville, which she also produced. That year she also led Celine Song's romance film Materialists, with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. Michael Showalter's adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel Verity, due in 2026, pairs her with Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett. Her first feature as a director will be A Tree is Blue, written by Vanessa Burghardt, her co-star in Cha Cha Real Smooth.

  • Tom W. Clarke of The Sydney Morning Herald once labeled Johnson "the most unfairly maligned actor in Hollywood." Her acting has often split critics and audiences. Louis Chilton of The Independent defended her as a talent whose projects fail to be "strange and funny as she is." Miriam Handel of The Daily Beast said her performance almost always lifts the films she chooses. Coleman Spilde of Salon called her often the strongest asset of her films.

Clarke named Am I Ok?, Cha Cha Real Smooth and Materialists as her strongest work. He said she excels at complex characters on journeys of self-discovery. Guadagnino, who directed her in Suspiria, described her as a bold, bombastic and committed performer.

Fifty Shades established her early on as a sex symbol. Since then her roles have broadened, from supporting parts in blockbusters and small art films to leading roles in prestige films. In 2024 she said she is "open to anything" and does not "discriminate against movie genres." She has also said she will take smaller roles if the character interests her.

Off screen she has a reputation for candor, and her interview clips and quotes regularly go viral. Meher Yeda of Texas Monthly observed that her press appearances often overshadow the films she promotes. Her tour for Madame Web drew heavy coverage because of her self-awareness and apparent indifference to the film's reception. Taryn Ryder of Yahoo! Entertainment called her Materialists tour "effortlessly chic, disarmingly unfiltered and entirely in control of the narrative."

Stephanie McNeal of Glamour described her persona as "acerbic, witty, and deadpan." McNeal also said she has become something of an "America's sweetheart." She credited that appeal to Johnson's uncurated presence and her detachment from traditional Hollywood self-promotion. In 2024 the film critic Stephanie Zacharek credited her unfiltered answers, intelligence, dry wit and varied roles.

As the child of famous actors, she has faced debate over how much her background shaped her opportunities. She has acknowledged some privilege but called the discourse about nepo babies "boring," especially among journalists. She has joked about the label on Saturday Night Live, where she returned as host in 2024 with Justin Timberlake as musical guest.

Her private life has drawn attention too. She had long relationships with the musician Noah Gersh and the actor Jordan Masterson. She dated Matthew Hitt, lead vocalist of the Welsh indie rock band Drowners, on and off for almost two years until 2016. She and Chris Martin began dating in October 2017, lived together in Malibu, California, and became engaged. In June 2025 reports said they had split after eight years.

She is a tattoo enthusiast and was named a brand ambassador for Gucci. In 2018 she worked with 300 women in Hollywood to set up the Time's Up initiative against harassment and discrimination. In November 2020 she became an investor and co-creative director of Maude, a sexual wellness brand. An avid reader, she launched a book club in March 2024. In October 2025 she became a global brand ambassador for the Italian fashion house Valentino.
