  In December 2013, Sony Pictures revealed plans to use The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as a launchpad for an expanded universe featuring villains like Venom. Producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach discussed how these worlds might coexist with the Marvel Cinematic Universe following The Avengers in 2012. By March 2014, emails leaked during the November 2014 hacking of Sony's computers showed executives planning to rejuvenate the franchise through animated comedy films with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed financially and critically, Sony abandoned those initial spin-off ambitions. In February 2015, Sony announced a partnership with Marvel Studios to integrate Spider-Man into the MCU while developing standalone films independently. This deal produced Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017 and allowed Sony to redevelop Venom as its own entity starting in March 2016. Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra later stated that the next seven or eight years of the shared universe had been planned by March 2019.

  Sony officially named their new shared universe "Sony's Marvel Universe" in May 2017 before changing it to "Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters" internally by August 2018. Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch explained that they wanted individual filmmakers to give each film its own distinct style rather than having a single person in charge like Kevin Feige does for the MCU. By July 2018, executive vice president Palak Patel oversaw all universe films while Vulture interviewed creatives about fan concerns regarding Sony's plans. Brian Michael Bendis described Sony's approach as very cool because fans would not be annoyed with what they were doing compared to other studios struggling to replicate Marvel success. Sony confirmed in August 2018 that they held rights to 900 Marvel Comics characters including villains, heroes, antiheroes, and female characters who are fully dimensionalized. The studio decided against making Venom act as a common thread throughout the universe even though it would have key points of intersection with other films. After Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter performed poorly at the box office in 2024, reports indicated Sony stopped developing further films to focus on Spider-Man: Brand New Day set for 2026.

• 3. Multiverse Connections To The MCU

  Producer Amy Pascal clarified in June 2017 that Sony intended their new Marvel-based films to take place in the same world as Spider-Man: Homecoming despite being adjunct to that world. Tom Holland spent several days filming a cameo appearance as Peter Parker during Venom production but Marvel Studios asked Sony to exclude the scene from the final film. By August 2019, Sony announced that Spider-Man would cross cinematic universes after Disney returned to negotiations following fan backlash at D23 Expo. In No Way Home Doctor Strange cast two spells bringing characters from other universes into the MCU before sending them back to their own universes. The mid-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage shows Venom being transported into the MCU by the first spell while the second scene sends him back to his own universe leaving a small part of the symbiote behind. Mid-credits scenes in Morbius reveal Adrian Toomes Vulture was also transported to the SSU due to the same spell creating a team with Michael Morbius. Sony adjusted these plans after Morbius was delayed from its initial 2020 release date until after No Way Home because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  Venom released on the 5th of October 2018 after filming took place from October 2017 to January 2018 in Atlanta New York City and San Francisco. Venom: Let There Be Carnage followed on the 1st of October 2021 with Andy Serkis directing after Ruben Fleischer left for Zombieland Double Tap. Filming occurred in England from November 2019 to February 2020 with additional shoots in San Francisco. Morbius arrived on the 1st of April 2022 following production that began at the end of February 2019 in London and concluded by June. Madame Web released on the 14th of February 2024 after filming started mid-July 2023 in Boston Massachusetts and New York City before completing by late 2022. Venom: The Last Dance came out on the 25th of October 2024 after filming resumed in November 2023 following the SAG-AFTRA strike that halted production earlier. Kraven the Hunter was released on the 13th of December 2024 after filming began in late March 2022 in London and concluded by mid-June.

• 5. Television Expansion And Streaming Deals

  Sony Pictures Television chairman Mike Hopkins stated in March 2019 that the universe would expand to television with projects developed specifically by Sony Pictures Television. By September 2020 Sony was in talks with Amazon Prime Video to distribute their suite of Marvel-based series similar to Netflix's arrangement for Marvel Television. In November 2022 the series were set to debut on MGM+ before streaming on Prime Video. The Silk series titled Silk Spider Society faced delays when the Writers Guild of America went on strike in May 2023. Amazon chose not to move forward with Silk Spider Society by May 2024 instead greenlighting the Spider-Man Noir series titled Spider-Noir with Nicolas Cage reprising his role from Into the Spider-Verse. Filming took place in Los Angeles from August 2024 to March 2025 for eight episodes set to debut on MGM+ domestically before international release on Amazon Prime Video. Lord and Miller's deal ended by August 2024 after disagreements over budget for Spider-Noir while Amazon remained committed to other Marvel series with Sony.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage made $506,813,864 globally with an 110 million dollar budget receiving 58 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 76 percent CinemaScore. Morbius earned only $167,460,961 worldwide despite a 75, 83 million dollar budget scoring just 15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 62 percent CinemaScore. Madame Web brought in $100,498,764 total against an 80 million dollar budget achieving the lowest critical reception at 10 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 54 percent CinemaScore. Venom: The Last Dance generated $478,931,196 worldwide from a 120 million dollar budget with 40 percent Rotten Tomatoes and 73 percent CinemaScore scores. Kraven the Hunter finished with $61,989,190 global revenue after spending 110, 130 million dollars to produce it while earning 15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 59 percent CinemaScore.
