  • Armie Hammer was hand-picked in 2007 by the filmmaker George Miller to play Batman. The actor, born in 1986, had been chosen after a long search. The film was Justice League: Mortal, and Miller was set to direct it. It never reached theaters. The looming 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike played a large part in its cancellation, along with stalled budget rebate talks with the Australian government. Hammer was cast as Bruce Wayne in a film that was never made, yet he went on to play real people, a pair of identical twins and a masked cowboy. His career brought critical praise and prizes, then a sudden and very public halt. How does a young actor with one of America's best-known surnames end up in that position? What did it take to play two men at once? And how does a career rebuild after the work dries up?

  • Armand Douglas Hammer was born on the 28th of August 1986 in Santa Monica, California. His mother, Dru Ann, who was born a Mobley, is a former bank loan officer. His father, Michael Armand Hammer, owned several businesses, among them Knoedler Publishing and a film and television production company called Armand Hammer Productions. A younger brother, Viktor, was named for their great-granduncle Victor Hammer.

The name on the family tree is a heavy one. Armie's paternal great-grandfather was the oil tycoon and philanthropist Armand Hammer, whose parents were Jewish emigrants from the Russian Empire. Armand's father, Julius Hammer, came from Odessa and was an early activist in the Communist Party in New York. Armie has described his own background as "half Jewish". His great-grandmother was the Russian-born actress and singer Baroness Olga Vadimovna von Root, who came from Sevastopol and was the daughter of a tsarist general. His paternal grandmother was from Texas, and his mother's family comes from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Hammer lived for several years in Highland Park, an affluent town in the Dallas area. When he was seven, the family moved to the Cayman Islands and stayed for five years. There he attended Faulkner's Academy in Governor's Harbour, and Grace Christian Academy in West Bay, Grand Cayman, a school his father had founded. The family then settled in Los Angeles, where he attended Los Angeles Baptist High School in the San Fernando Valley. In eleventh grade he dropped out to chase acting, and he later took college courses at UCLA. He has said his parents disowned him over the decision, then came around to being supportive and proud. By 2005, he had his first television credit.

  • In 2006, Hammer played a character named Kurt on Veronica Mars, one of a run of small television parts. The list also includes Desperate Housewives, Gossip Girl, Reaper and Arrested Development. On film, he had a minor role in Flicka in 2006 and co-starred in the psychological thriller Blackout in 2008.

The Christian evangelist Billy Graham gave him his first lead. The film Billy: The Early Years premiered in October 2008. Hammer's performance earned a nomination for a Faith and Values Award in the Grace Award category, which honors the most inspiring performance in a movie or television show. The prize comes from Mediaguide, an organization that publishes movie reviews from a Christian perspective.

In 2009 he played Harrison Bergeron in 2081, a film based on Kurt Vonnegut's short story of the same name. It premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival.

Then came 2010 and David Fincher's The Social Network, a drama about the creation of Facebook. Hammer played both Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, identical twins. The actor Josh Pence served as his body double on set. In post-production, computer-generated imagery placed Hammer's face over Pence's, and some scenes relied on split-screen photography. The twins are rowing champions, so Hammer had to learn to row on both sides of a boat. He and Pence also spent 10 months in what they called twin boot camp. The aim was to "drill the subtle movements and speech patterns that the Winklevosses would have developed over two decades of genetic equality."

The effort won him his first critical plaudits. Richard Corliss of Time magazine called the portrayal "an astonishingly subtle trompe l'oeil of special effects". The Toronto Film Critics Association named Hammer its Best Supporting Actor. The twins stayed with him a little longer, since in January 2012 he voiced both of them for an episode of The Simpsons titled "The D'oh-cial Network".

  • Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, from 2011, cast Hammer as Clyde Tolson, the first associate director of the FBI. The screenplay was by Dustin Lance Black, and Leonardo DiCaprio played J. Edgar Hoover. Critics were kind to Hammer. David Denby of The New Yorker called his work "charming", and Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter called it "excellent". McCarthy singled out the chemistry between DiCaprio and Hammer in showing the long-speculated romantic bond between their characters. The film itself drew mixed reviews, partly over its direction and writing and partly over the makeup used to age the leads. Both actors still earned Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations.

Off camera, Hammer had married the television personality Elizabeth Chambers in May 2010. Their friend Tyler Ramsey, an artist, had introduced them, and they went on to have two children. In 2011, Hammer was arrested at a United States Border Patrol checkpoint in West Texas after marijuana turned up in his car. The El Paso attorney declined to prosecute, because the amount would only have been a misdemeanor. In 2013, Hammer described the arrest as a misunderstanding of interstate laws versus state laws.

In Mirror Mirror, from 2012, he played Prince Andrew Alcott alongside Julia Roberts and Lily Collins. The following year, Disney handed him the title role in The Lone Ranger, with Johnny Depp as Tonto. The film adapted the old radio and film serials and opened in July 2013. It earned only $260.5 million worldwide on a reported budget of $215 million, and it was considered a box office failure. Hammer also voiced the character in the Disney Infinity video games.

In 2015, director Guy Ritchie cast him as Illya Kuryakin in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., a big-screen version of the 1960s television series. His partner in the spy caper was Henry Cavill.

  • Sam Turner, a role in Nate Parker's The Birth of a Nation, brought Hammer to the Sundance Film Festival in 2016. The film won both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. That January it also emerged that Hammer had been in contact since 2013 with the family of the drug lord Edgar Valdez Villarreal. He had secured the rights to film the cartel leader's life story. The same year he joined the ensemble of Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals, played Ord in Ben Wheatley's Free Fire, and played the U.S. Marine Mike Stevens in Mine.

Production on Call Me by Your Name began in May 2016, and the film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Luca Guadagnino directed this adaptation of André Aciman's novel, and Hammer played Oliver opposite Timothée Chalamet and Michael Stuhlbarg. His performance drew nominations for the Critics' Choice Award, the Independent Spirit Award and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair praised how Hammer used "his ludicrous proportions and chiseled handsomeness to great, surprisingly witty and sensitive effect." Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called the performance "a revelation". Critics repeatedly noted the "ridiculous chemistry" with Chalamet. Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com credited Hammer with finding a "tricky balance between the character's swagger and his vulnerability". He also narrated the audiobook, published by Macmillan Publishers.

Hammer voiced Jackson Storm, the main antagonist of Disney-Pixar's Cars 3, in 2017. He also played the author James Lord opposite Geoffrey Rush in Stanley Tucci's Final Portrait, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival that year. Owen Gleiberman of Variety wrote that Hammer could "suggest turbulent eddies of thought beneath the blondish Clark Kent looks and preppie manners." The film reached theaters the next year through Sony Pictures Classics.

In 2018, Boots Riley's dark comedy Sorry to Bother You gave him the part of Steve Lift. Tomris Laffly of Film Journal International described the character as an "irresistibly funny" and "abominable villain". That year he also played David in Hotel Mumbai, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on the 7th of September 2018. He then played Martin D. Ginsburg, a taxation law expert and the husband of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, in Mimi Leder's On the Basis of Sex, opposite Felicity Jones. The film premiered at AFI Fest on the 8th of November 2018. In June 2018 he led Straight White Men as Drew at Second Stage Theater on Broadway. For his work across 2017 and 2018, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival gave him its Outstanding Achievement in Cinema award.

Babak Anvari's horror film Wounds, with Dakota Johnson, followed in 2019. In 2020 he took the role of Maxim de Winter in Ben Wheatley's adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, opposite Lily James. His next film, the 2021 opioid crisis thriller Crisis, put him beside Gary Oldman and Evangeline Lilly.

  • In January 2021, an anonymous Instagram account posted screenshots of sexually charged text messages. It said Hammer had sent them to various women. He denied that the messages were valid and called the posts an "online attack". He later said his legal team had failed to deliver a subpoena to Meta for messaging records related to the accusations. That same month, Cayman police spoke to him about leaked videos in which he said he had sex with "Miss Cayman". He later apologized to the Cayman Compass and clarified that the woman he meant had no connection to the Miss Cayman Islands beauty pageant.

Two months later, his ex-girlfriend Efrosina Angelova, known as Effie, said she ran the Instagram account. She accused Hammer of raping her in April 2017. Two other women then spoke to Page Six. Courtney Vucekovich said he had subjected her to emotional abuse and had spoken of cooking and eating one of her ribs. She said she attended a hospitalization program for post-traumatic stress disorder after the relationship. Paige Lorenze said Hammer branded her, left her covered in bruises, and talked about "consuming her". Hammer's legal team responded: "the assertions about Mr. Hammer are patently untrue. Any interactions with any partner of his were completely consensual in that they were fully discussed, agreed upon, and mutually participatory."

The LAPD opened an investigation in March 2021 and concluded it that December. Hammer's attorney said there was never a case, a lawsuit or a criminal proceeding against anyone. The accusations became part of House of Hammer, a documentary series released in 2022. In September 2022, it emerged that the attorney Gloria Allred had refused to represent Angelova. The report said Angelova "wouldn't sign a declaration under perjury" about her accusations. In 2025, Angelova gave a different account. She said Allred withdrew after she refused to retroactively let Allred discuss her case in House of Hammer, having earlier asked her not to talk about it with the filmmakers.

In February 2023, the publication Air Mail ran an article questioning the details of the accusations. Hammer admitted to consensual BDSM and to emotional abuse, but denied the claims of sexual abuse and cannibalism. In May 2023, the LA County District Attorney declined to indict him, citing insufficient evidence.

  • Shotgun Wedding lost Hammer in 2021, when he dropped out of the film. He also left his leading role in the Paramount+ miniseries The Offer, stepped away from the Starz series Gaslit and withdrew from the Broadway play The Minutes. Billion Dollar Spy removed him. The talent agency William Morris Endeavor dropped him as a client, and his publicist was reported to be done with him too. In December 2021, news broke that his role in Taika Waititi's Next Goal Wins had been reshot, with Will Arnett taking over. Despite all this, Hammer still appeared in Kenneth Branagh's 2022 adaptation of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile, as part of the ensemble.

By 2022, Hammer was living in the Cayman Islands to be near Chambers and their children. The couple had announced their separation on Instagram on the 10th of July 2020, and in June 2023 they reached a divorce settlement. In the Cayman Islands he held several jobs, including selling timeshares and managing an apartment complex. In 2024 he moved back to Los Angeles after being refused further work permits there. He later described himself as in a "bad financial state", with little acting work and no access to his family's fortune. In 2023, Hammer also alleged that a youth pastor had sexually assaulted him at age 13.

In July 2024, his mother, Dru Ann, addressed the allegations in her book Hammered. The same month he discussed the accusations and his own changes in an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored. In October 2024, The Guardian reported the launch of his podcast, Armie HammerTime, saying he "interviews other stars but seems more interested in talking about himself". The show explores a range of topics from his personal life. He sat down for The Louis Theroux Podcast in February 2025.

Hammer returned to acting in 2024. The western Frontier Crucible, listed for 2025, gave him the role of Edmund.
