Chris Evans (actor)

8 sections
  • Chris Evans is an American actor whose leading roles have brought in $11.4 billion at the worldwide box office. That total places him among the highest-grossing film stars of all time. It also made him one of the highest-paid actors in the world. Much of it comes from one character, the shield-carrying soldier Steve Rogers, known to audiences as Captain America. Yet the road to that role ran through teen comedies, box-office disappointments and films that critics openly disliked. How does a theater kid from outside Boston become the face of a blockbuster franchise? What did he choose to do once he had that fame? And what kind of person stood behind the shield?

  • Christopher Robert Evans was born on the 13th of June 1981 in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in the nearby town of Sudbury. He was raised Catholic, with two sisters, Carly and Shanna, and a brother, Scott.

His mother, Lisa Capuano, is an artistic director at the Concord Youth Theater, so the stage was close to home. His father, Bob, is a dentist. His father has Irish ancestry, while his mother is half Irish and half Italian. His parents divorced in 1999.

Mike Capuano, the children's uncle, served as mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts, from 1990 to 1999. He then sat in the US House of Representatives from 1999 to 2019.

Bye Bye Birdie gave the young Evans the part of Randolph MacAfee. He loved musical theater as a child and went to acting camp. At Christmas he and his siblings performed for relatives, and he recalled that being onstage "felt like home."

Before his senior year of high school, Evans spent a summer in New York City, taking classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. He graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in 1999, where Jeremy Strong was a schoolmate. His first acting job outside community theater was Eric Ogden's short film Paper Boy, which he found through Backstage.

  • Biodiversity: Wild About Life!, a short educational film from 1997, carries Evans's first credit. Two years later he modeled as "Tyler" for Hasbro's board game Mystery Date. The special edition came with an electronic phone, and the game box shows him speaking into it.

In 1999 he also made his screen debut in the television film The Newcomers, a family drama. He played Judd, a boy who falls in love with a girl played by Kate Bosworth. He took a lead role in the series Opposite Sex, which lasted eight episodes, and appeared in an episode of The Fugitive titled "Guilt".

Not Another Teen Movie, released in 2001, parodied teen films, and Evans played a high school footballer. Reviews were mainly negative. Even so, it earned $38 million at home and $28 million overseas, for $66 million worldwide.

The Perfect Score, from 2004, followed students who break into an office to steal answers to the SAT exam. Critics panned it. Matthew Leyland of the BBC thought Evans's performance was "bland" and said the cast had "little chemistry".

Cellular, also from 2004, put him opposite Jason Statham, Kim Basinger and William H. Macy. Evans played Ryan, a college student who gets a random call from a kidnapped woman and must save her. Reviews were mixed, but Slant Magazine felt that "Evans proves himself a sufficiently charismatic leading man". Looking back, Evans remarked that some of his early films were "really terrible".

  • Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, was Evans's first comic book role, in Fantastic Four in 2005. The film succeeded commercially despite a divided reception. Joe Leydon of Variety, in a mixed review, called his work a "charismatic breakout performance".

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer followed in 2007. Rob Salem of the Toronto Star judged it a "significant improvement" on the first film. Evans himself was less warm. In 2016 he said the films left him "a little uneasy" because "the movies weren't exactly the way I'd envisioned them". He returned as Johnny Storm in a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.

Casey Jones, a character from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics, was the part Evans voiced in the 2007 animated film TMNT. Warner Bros. Pictures and The Weinstein Company released it. Reviews were mixed, yet it grossed $95 million worldwide.

Sylvain White's The Losers, from 2010, adapted a comic series from the DC Comics imprint Vertigo. Evans played Captain Jake Jensen. He said he liked that the character "doesn't take things too seriously" and is "the one that kind of loves life and he's always looking for a joke". Reviews were mixed, though The Guardian praised the cast for their "breezy charm".

Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, also from 2010, cast Evans as Lucas Lee, one of Ramona Flowers' seven evil exes. The film was a box-office bomb but earned positive reviews. It later found a second life as a cult film. In 2023, Evans voiced Lucas Lee again in the animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

  • Fierce People, in 2005, adapted Dirk Wittenborn's 2002 novel of the same name, and Evans starred in it. The same year he played a drug user with relationship problems in the romantic drama London. Critics were harsh. Variety described London as "noxious" and thought Evans's character was the worst in it. Roger Ebert called the film "dreck".

Danny Boyle's Sunshine, in 2007, sent a group of astronauts on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying sun. Reviews were generally favorable. Roger Ebert wrote that the cast were "effective... they almost all play professional astronaut/scientists, and not action-movie heroes".

The Nanny Diaries, also in 2007, made him the love interest of Scarlett Johansson's character. His last release that year was the animation Battle for Terra. It premiered at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival and reached wider theaters in 2009. Reception was largely mixed.

Street Kings, in 2008, cast him as Detective Paul Diskant beside Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker and Hugh Laurie. He was also cast in The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond, a romantic drama based on a 1957 Tennessee Williams screenplay, with Bryce Dallas Howard and Ellen Burstyn. The Village Voice called his performance "catatonic".

Push, in 2009, gave him a character with telekinetic abilities, opposite Dakota Fanning and Camilla Belle. Response was generally negative. Mick LaSelle of the San Francisco Chronicle said the story "makes no sense" and predicted that "one of these days he's going to make a good movie".

Puncture was directed by Mark Kassen and Adam Kassen and filmed in Houston, Texas. It premiered at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival as a spotlight project for the festival's 10th anniversary. Evans played Mike Weiss, a real-life young lawyer and drug addict. Critics were divided.

What's Your Number?, also from 2011, paired him with Anna Faris in an adaptation of Karyn Bosnak's book 20 Times a Lady. Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club gave it a C+ and called the pair's chemistry "frisky".

Robert Pronge, a hitman in the 2012 film The Iceman, was a part first intended for James Franco, who dropped out before filming. The story concerns the murderer Richard Kuklinski. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter praised Evans's versatile performance, which looked nothing like his Captain America persona.

Bong Joon-ho was reluctant to cast Evans in Snowpiercer, a 2013 film based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige. Then he watched Evans in Sunshine and Puncture and saw a "sensitive" side. The finished film was critically acclaimed, and a critic at Salon called the cast performances "sensational".

  • In 2010, Evans signed a multi-film deal with Marvel Studios to play Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America. He had first turned the part down. Robert Downey Jr. encouraged him to take it, and Marvel kept pressing until he accepted. Afterward he went to see a therapist. He found the character fun to play and said, "I think Marvel is doing a lot of good things right now".

Captain America: The First Avenger arrived in 2011 and earned over $370 million worldwide. It was a critical and commercial success. The Sydney Morning Herald called it a "fresh twist on 20th-century history" and praised Evans's "confident-but-subtle treatment" of the role.

The Avengers, a year later, set him beside Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner. It grossed $1.519 billion and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

Three months of strength training and fight rehearsal came before Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014. It grossed $714 million worldwide. Peter Howell of the Toronto Star found Evans "impressive", though he thought the plot "a little too complicated". Evans has called it his favorite Marvel film, because he began to understand the character and enjoyed working with directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

Avengers: Age of Ultron, in 2015, grossed $1.4 billion, and Captain America: Civil War grossed $1.1 billion. The Hollywood Reporter later learned that his salary for Civil War was $15 million.

Avengers: Infinity War came in 2018, and Avengers: Endgame followed in spring 2019, both directed by the Russos. Evans said that he and Scarlett Johansson never saw the full Infinity War script: "We had to fight to get an actual paper script. There were giving us either pages or bits on an iPad. It's been tricky." USA Today thought Evans and Hemsworth were a "blast to watch", while Time criticized the film's pacing and substance.

Endgame finished filming in October 2018, and Evans found the ending emotional. He said, "For the last month of filming I was letting myself go to work every day and be a little overwhelmed and a little nostalgic and grateful. By the last day, I was bawling. I cry pretty easy, but I was definitely bawling."

In December 2025, it was revealed that Evans would play Steve Rogers again in Avengers: Doomsday, set for 2026.

  • In March 2014, Evans said he might consider acting less so he could focus on directing. That year he made his directorial debut with Before We Go, which he also produced and starred in, opposite Alice Eve. The film follows two strangers who meet at Grand Central Terminal and form an unlikely bond overnight. It premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. Ben Keninsberg of The New York Times called it a moderate effort that the actors' chemistry made watchable. The same year he also starred opposite Michelle Monaghan in Playing It Cool.

Gifted, in 2017, cast him as an uncle in a custody battle with the grandmother of an intellectually gifted seven-year-old, played by Lindsay Duncan. Empire magazine felt Evans played the part with "conviction" despite a predictable plot. That year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also invited him to join.

Lobby Hero, a play by Kenneth Lonergan, brought Evans to Broadway in March 2018 at the Helen Hayes Theatre. It was part of Second Stage Theatre's first Broadway season, and Trip Cullman directed. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called it a "terrific Broadway debut" and described the performance as a "marvel of smooth calculation and bluster". The Drama League nominated Evans for an award.

The Red Sea Diving Resort, a 2019 Netflix thriller loosely based on Operation Moses and Operation Joshua in 1984-85, had Evans playing an Israeli Mossad agent. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter gave it a mixed review and found Evans "sincere".

Rian Johnson's Knives Out, also from 2019, cast him as Ransom Drysdale, a spoiled playboy. It drew critical acclaim and grossed $309 million worldwide. Linda Holmes of NPR called it "a special treat to see him tear right into this rich-brat bit". She added that he was "both preternaturally handsome and cheerfully obnoxious, a one-man cable-knit charm offensive."

Defending Jacob, an Apple TV+ miniseries from 2020 based on a novel, had him play assistant district attorney Andy Barber, whose son is accused of murder. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter said Evans "is sturdy and conveys the right measure of empathy and fear". He also had a cameo in Adam McKay's Netflix comedy Don't Look Up.

In 2022, Evans voiced Buzz Lightyear in the Disney and Pixar film Lightyear, which gained mostly favorable reviews. He also starred in The Gray Man, a Netflix thriller adapted from a 2009 novel and directed by the Russos. Reviews were mixed, but viewership on Netflix was strong.

Ghosted, a 2023 Apple TV+ action comedy from director Dexter Fletcher, paired him with Ana de Armas. Several critics panned it, and the pair received Golden Raspberry nominations in 2024, including Worst Actor for Evans. Pain Hustlers, a Netflix crime drama, also drew poor reviews.

Red One, a 2024 action comedy with Dwayne Johnson, received generally negative reviews. Critics singled out Evans's performance as flat and forgettable. In 2025 he starred with Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza in the black comedy Honey Don't!, which also received a negative reception.

  • Alba Baptista, a Portuguese actress, married Evans on the 9th of September 2023 in a private ceremony at home on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Their first child, a daughter, was born in October 2025. Earlier, while he was filming Gifted in 2015, Evans adopted a dog named Dodger from a local animal shelter.

Buddhism has shaped Evans's thinking, though he does not describe himself as a Buddhist. He follows Eastern philosophies more generally, including Taoism. He has said that "it's just the dogma that separates these religions" and "I'm not going to get caught up in that." On Oprah's Book Club he asked Eckhart Tolle a question and revealed that he has a tattoo of one of Tolle's quotes.

The New England Patriots have a devoted fan in Evans. He narrated the documentary series America's Game: The Story of the 2014 New England Patriots and America's Game: 2016 Patriots. In 2022, People magazine named him "Sexiest Man Alive". He is often grouped with Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine and Chris Pratt as one of the "Hollywood Chrises".

In 2012, Evans affirmed his support for same-sex marriage, saying, "It's insane that civil rights are being denied people in this day and age." He added, "In ten years we'll be ashamed that this was an issue." In August 2016 he backed Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey's continued enforcement of the state's ban on assault weapons. He endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election and was an outspoken critic of Donald Trump's presidency.

Alabama enacted the Human Life Protection Act in May 2019, a near-total ban on abortions in the state. Evans called the bill "absolutely unbelievable" and wrote, "If you're not worried about Roe v. Wade, you're not paying attention." In July 2020 he launched A Starting Point, a website of short interviews with American elected officials. Its stated goal was to present "both the Democratic and Republican point of view on dozens of issues across the political landscape." In October 2020 he joined a virtual fundraiser for Joe Biden's presidential campaign. In 2021 he endorsed Maya Wiley in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary.

Christopher's Haven, a charity that provides housing to families affected by childhood cancer, is a cause Evans supports. In 2015, he and Chris Pratt made a bet that raised donations for the charity and for Seattle Children's Hospital, where the two visited patients. In May 2020 he organized a virtual fundraiser with his Avengers co-stars to benefit Feeding America, Meals on Wheels, World Central Kitchen and No Kid Hungry. In 2021, he placed third in a charity fantasy football tournament with those co-stars and won $80,000 for Christopher's Haven.
