  • Adam Sandler once made a Western comedy that critics almost universally panned. On the 6th of January 2016, Netflix announced that the film, The Ridiculous 6, had been watched more times in thirty days than any other movie in the service's history. That gap between the reviewers and the audience follows Sandler through his whole career. He is a comedian whose films often drew harsh notices, yet they kept finding enormous crowds. He is also an actor whom some of the most admired directors working today have chosen for serious roles. How does a performer end up on both sides of that divide? What did the filmmakers who loved his silliest movies see in him? And what does it take for a man who spent decades being dismissed to be handed one of America's top honors for humor?

  • Adam Richard Sandler was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on the 9th of September 1966. His mother, Judith, taught nursery school, and his father, Stanley, was an electrical engineer. He had three older siblings: Scott, Elizabeth, and Valerie. Both sides of the family descended from Russian Jewish immigrants. When Adam was six, the family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire. He attended Manchester Central High School and, as a teenager, belonged to the Jewish youth group BBYO. In 1988 he graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with a bachelor's degree in acting.

Television came first. In 1987 he played Smitty, a friend of Theo Huxtable, on The Cosby Show. That same year he appeared on the MTV game show Remote Control as the Stud Boy or Trivia Delinquent. His first film, Going Overboard, arrived in 1989. Stand-up was where he really built his act. He had first walked onto a comedy stage at 17, pushed along by his brother.

The break came when comedian Dennis Miller saw Sandler perform in Los Angeles. Miller recommended him to Lorne Michaels, the producer of Saturday Night Live. Sandler joined the show as a writer in 1990 and became a featured player the following year. He stayed in the cast until 1995. His reputation came from original songs, among them The Thanksgiving Song and The Chanukah Song. In 1993 he appeared in Coneheads beside fellow SNL performers Chris Farley, David Spade, Dan Aykroyd, Phil Hartman, and Jane Curtin. The next year he co-starred in Airheads with Brendan Fraser and Steve Buscemi.

His departure from the show became a story he told himself. Sandler said on The Tonight Show, speaking with Conan O'Brien, that NBC fired him and Farley in 1995. When he returned to host SNL on the 4th of May 2019, he turned that firing into part of his monologue. He closed the episode with a tribute to Farley. The hosting job earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

  • Billy Madison, released in 1995, cast Sandler as a grown man repeating grades one through twelve. His goal was to win back his father's respect and the right to inherit a multimillion-dollar hotel empire. Reviews were negative, but the film did well at the box office. A pattern was set. Bulletproof followed in 1996, then Happy Gilmore the same year, and The Wedding Singer in 1998, his first film with Drew Barrymore.

The Waterboy, also from 1998, was one of his first big hits. It cost him a role. He had been cast in the bachelor party comedy and thriller Very Bad Things but had to withdraw because The Waterboy kept him busy. Big Daddy came in 1999, followed by Mr. Deeds, Anger Management, 50 First Dates, The Longest Yard, and Click. Fifty First Dates reunited him with Barrymore for a second time. Together his studio comedies have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide.

In 1999 he founded Happy Madison Productions. Its first production was Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, a film starring fellow SNL alumnus Rob Schneider. The company sits on the Sony and Columbia Pictures lot in Culver City, California, and has produced most of Sandler's later films. Most of those films received negative reviews. Three are considered among the worst ever made, yet most still performed well at the box office.

The 2010 comedy Grown Ups gathered Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, and Maya Rudolph. Sandler wrote the script with Fred Wolf, and Dennis Dugan directed. Reviewing the sequel, Los Angeles Times critic Mark Olsen compared Sandler to Judd Apatow's opposite. He called him "the white Tyler Perry: smart enough to know better, savvy enough to do it anyway, lazy enough not to care."

Sandler kept widening his range of comic projects. He and Kevin James starred in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry in 2007. In 2008 came You Don't Mess with the Zohan, written by Sandler, Apatow, and Robert Smigel. That year's Bedtime Stories, with Keri Russell and Russell Brand, was his first family film and his first for Disney. He voiced Dracula in the first three Hotel Transylvania films between 2012 and 2018. He also voiced a capuchin monkey in Zookeeper in 2011. His last big studio comedy of this period, Blended, reunited him with Barrymore a third time. It was filmed in South Africa and released on the 23rd of May 2014.

One friendship from these years carried real weight. In 2013 Sandler guest starred as himself on the Disney Channel series Jessie, in an episode titled Punched Dumped Love. The show's star, Cameron Boyce, had worked with him on both Grown Ups films. Sandler's 2020 film Hubie Halloween was later dedicated to Boyce's memory.

  • Paul Thomas Anderson loved Sandler's early comedies at what has been described as an obsession level. He wrote Punch-Drunk Love, released in 2002, with Sandler in mind. Sandler felt intimidated after watching Anderson's earlier film Magnolia, from 1999. His fears eased once he received the script. Roger Ebert's review argued that Sandler had been wasted in earlier films with poorly written scripts and characters with no development. Ebert saw the same childlike, love-starved persona in the new film, but in a fresh light. He called it the "key to all Adam Sandler films". Sandler earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

The film started a drift away from slapstick. In Reign Over Me, from 2007, directed by Mike Binder, Sandler played a man who loses his entire family in the September 11 attacks. He then struggles to rebuild a friendship with his old college roommate, played by Don Cheadle. Then came Funny People, released on the 31st of July 2009, in which he played a famous comedian with a terminal illness. Judd Apatow directed it. In June 2010 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited 135 people to join, including 20 actors. Sandler was one of them, and Funny People and Punch-Drunk Love were both cited in the announcement.

The Meyerowitz Stories, directed by Noah Baumbach, premiered in competition for the Palme d'Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Sandler played Danny Meyerowitz, unemployed and separated from his wife. Danny's relationships with his brother, played by Ben Stiller, his sister, played by Elizabeth Marvel, and his father, played by Dustin Hoffman, are all strained. Variety critic Peter Debruge wrote, "With no shtick to fall back on, Sandler is forced to act, and it's a glorious thing to watch".

Uncut Gems arrived in December 2019, directed by the Safdie brothers. Critics widely called the role a career best, and it won Sandler the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. In 2022 he produced and starred in the sports drama Hustle. It drew critical acclaim, and his performance earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. In 2024 he led the science fiction drama Spaceman, directed by Johan Renck and adapted from the novel Spaceman of Bohemia. Most recently, Jay Kelly in 2025 paired him with George Clooney. Both men were praised, and both received nominations at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards.

  • In October 2014, Netflix announced a four-movie deal with Sandler and Happy Madison Productions. That same year Sandler co-starred in Men, Women & Children, a drama directed by Jason Reitman. He was also considered for the voice of Rocket Raccoon in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Bradley Cooper got the part instead.

Pixels, released in 2015, was Sandler's last theatrical film before the move to streaming. It was based on a 2010 short film of the same name by French director Patrick Jean. The Ridiculous 6 then became his first original Netflix film. The Do-Over followed in 2016, and Sandy Wexler in 2017, in which he played a talent manager who falls in love with one of his clients. The Week Of, with Chris Rock, arrived in 2018.

Stand-up returned too. Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh, a Netflix special from 2018, was his first stand-up film in over two decades. Steven Brill, a longtime collaborator, directed it. Paul Thomas Anderson filmed portions of it, which made it their first project together since Punch-Drunk Love sixteen years earlier. In June 2019 Sandler reunited with Jennifer Aniston for Murder Mystery, which set a record for the biggest opening weekend in Netflix history. A sequel followed in 2023.

In January 2020, Netflix announced a new four-movie deal with Happy Madison Productions worth up to $275 million. That year Sandler starred in and wrote Hubie Halloween. In 2023 he voiced Leo, a lizard, in the animated musical Leo. A second stand-up special, Adam Sandler: Love You, came in 2024, directed by Josh Safdie.

The money followed. Sandler's net worth was estimated at $420 million in 2020. In March 2024, Forbes announced that he had been the best-paid actor in Hollywood in 2023, earning $73 million. Then in 2025 he reprised the title role in Happy Gilmore 2, released nearly 30 years after the original. It reportedly drew over 90 million viewers on Netflix.

  • Before most of his film stardom, Sandler was a recording artist. They're All Gonna Laugh at You!, released on the 28th of September 1993 by Warner Bros., went 2x Platinum according to the RIAA. What the Hell Happened to Me? followed on the 13th of February 1996 and also reached 2x Platinum. It carried The Chanukah Song as a single, which earned a Gold certification. More albums followed, including What's Your Name? in 1997 and Stan and Judy's Kid in 1999.

The Peeper, a song from Stan and Judy's Kid, became an early internet hit. It was made into a flash cartoon and launched over the 1999 Labor Day weekend as a promotion for the album. More than 1 million users watched it during that period, which made it one of the most-watched clips on the internet at the time.

His musical side kept appearing in odd places. Shhh...Don't Tell came out on the 13th of July 2004, and the soundtrack for Eight Crazy Nights followed in 2002. In 2009 he contributed a cover of Neil Young's Like a Hurricane to Covered, A Revolution in Sound, part of Warner Brothers' 50th anniversary celebrations. The song was performed on the David Letterman Show with a band that included Waddy Wachtel, who has appeared with Sandler on a number of occasions.

The stand-up special Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh also became an album, released on the 22nd of March 2019, which reached number one on the comedy chart. Its songs include Phone Wallet Keys and one titled Farley. Live tours have run alongside the records, from What the Hell Happened to Me in 1996 and The College Tour in 1997 to Here Comes the Funny Tour from 2016 to 2018. The You're My Best Friend Tour followed in 2025.

  • In 2021, Vogue named Adam Sandler the year's fashion icon. The magazine credited him with popularizing a "grocery-run look" of oversized T-shirts, XXL pants, and Nike sneakers, nicknamed Adam Sandler style. The menswear brand Old Jewish Men sells basketball shorts inspired by it. Sandler told Esquire about the title: "It took a while. I was working that angle for years. For a while I was like, 'Please accept me and the way I dress.' And 30 years later, they finally came around."

He also shows up as a reference point across pop culture. The Simpsons mentions him in the episode Monty Can't Buy Me Love, Family Guy in Stew-Roids, and South Park in You're Getting Old. The video game Half-Life: Opposing Force references him as well. An episode of the HBO series Animals, titled The Trial, stages a mock court case to decide whether Sandler or Jim Carrey is the better comedian.

The formal honors came later. On the 19th of March 2023, the Kennedy Center gave him the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Friends and fellow performers, including Ben Stiller, Conan O'Brien, Dana Carvey, and Judd Apatow, spoke at the event. His other recognition includes six MTV Movie and TV Awards and nine People's Choice Awards. In 2024, the 49th People's Choice Awards named him the People's Choice Icon.

  • Sandler married Jacqueline Titone, known as Jackie, in 2003. She converted to Judaism, his religion. They have two daughters, Sadie, born in May 2006, and Sunny, born in November 2008. Jackie's father is the politician Joseph H. Titone. The family often appears in his films. Sadie and Sunny have each been in at least two of the Hotel Transylvania movies. His nephew Jared has also been featured, in films such as Pixels and Home Team.

Basketball is his other great love, and his skill at the street version has been widely reported. Sandler frequently looks for pick-up games when he travels and tours. People who have played with him point to his creative passes. He has suffered two major injuries on the court, a broken ankle and a shoulder injury that required surgery. He is known for the baggy clothing he wears while playing.

Sandler has not publicly discussed his political opinions. It has been reported that he was once a registered Republican. He performed at the 2004 Republican National Convention and donated $2,100 to Rudy Giuliani's 2008 presidential campaign. His largest reported gift was local. In 2007 he donated $1 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in Manchester, New Hampshire.
