  • Jon Favreau pitched a Star Wars television series featuring Mandalorians to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in 2017. Dave Filoni, an executive producer on the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008, 2020) and Star Wars Rebels (2014, 2018), was also conceiving a Mandalorian-focused series. Kennedy suggested they work together. This led to the creation of The Mandalorian, which debuted with the launch of Disney+ in November 2019. Shortly after the premiere, Walt Disney Studios's chief creative officer Alan F. Horn said a film could be developed if the series succeeded. The next month, Favreau noted there was an opportunity to explore characters in films or spin-off series. By late May 2022, Favreau began writing the fourth season of the show. He completed scripts with Filoni by February 2023. Production for that season was scheduled to begin in September but faced delays due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. During this pause, Lucasfilm re-evaluated their plans and decided to prioritize a theatrical film over continuing the weekly series. The studio announced The Mandalorian and Grogu in January 2024. Filming began in California by August 2024 and wrapped by December of that year.

  • The New Republic enlists Din Djarin and his apprentice Grogu following the fall of the Galactic Empire. A period of instability follows where remaining Imperial warlords threaten the galaxy. Din Djarin serves as a veteran Mandalorian bounty hunter operating in the outer reaches of space. His ward Grogu is an infant of the same species as Yoda. The story centers on these two figures navigating threats from factions loyal to the old regime. Sigourney Weaver portrays Ward, a colonel leading the New Republic's Adelphi Rangers who previously served as a pilot for the Rebel Alliance. Jeremy Allen White provides the voice of Rotta the Hutt, son of the deceased crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Jonny Coyne appears as an Imperial Warlord leading a faction of Galactic Empire remnants. Dave Filoni reprises his role as Trapper Wolf, a New Republic X-wing pilot from the television series. Garazeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels also appears alongside members of the Anzellan species seen in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The narrative focuses on how these characters unite against the lingering dangers of the past.

  • Pedro Pascal stars as Din Djarin, the titular Mandalorian whose face remains hidden behind a helmet throughout most scenes. Sigourney Weaver joins the cast as Colonel Ward, a leader of the Adelphi Rangers with a history as a Rebel Alliance pilot. Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt, a character first introduced in the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008). Jonny Coyne returns to play an Imperial Warlord he portrayed during the third season of The Mandalorian. Dave Filoni appears again as Trapper Wolf, a New Republic X-wing pilot from the television show. Garazeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels makes an appearance in the film. Members of the Anzellan species from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) are included in the ensemble. Production designers Doug Chiang and Andrew L. Jones returned from previous projects. Costume designer Mary Zophres reunited with Favreau after working on Iron Man 2 (2010). David Klein served as cinematographer for the project. Rachel Goodlett Katz edited the final cut of the movie. Ludwig Göransson composed the score for the film, returning to the franchise after scoring the first two seasons of the series.

  • Principal photography began in June 2024 under the working title Thunder Alley. Filming was expected to last for 92 days across California. The production employed approximately 54 cast members and 3,500 background extras. Five hundred crew members worked on set during the shoot. California allocated $21,755,000 in tax credits to the project through its filming incentive program. This allocation represented one of the largest amounts ever distributed by the state's program. The film generated over $166 million in qualified expenditures within California. It marked the first time a Star Wars theatrical film was produced entirely within the state. Filming wrapped by the start of December 2024. A new version of the Razor Crest ship appeared on screen despite being destroyed in the second season of the television series. Sigourney Weaver confirmed her casting at the end of August 2024. Dave Filoni revealed that Garazeb Orrelios would appear alongside Anzellan species characters from previous media. Jonny Coyne was announced as reprising his role as an Imperial Warlord in mid-December 2024. Jeremy Allen White was cast to voice Rotta the Hutt later that month.

  • Grogu is created using animatronics and puppetry techniques augmented with visual effects. The character remains an infant of the same species as Yoda throughout the story. An animatronic version of Grogu appeared on stage during the Star Wars Celebration Japan panel in April 2025. Ludwig Göransson composed the score for the film, returning after scoring the first two seasons of the series. Scoring sessions took place during the first half of January 2026 at the Fox Studio Lot in Los Angeles. The film features a mix of practical effects and digital enhancements to bring creatures to life. Only one human face appears clearly among the many masked characters and droids shown in promotional material. The teaser trailer released online in late September 2025 highlighted this unique visual approach. Fans noted the focus on Grogu and the limited visibility of human faces compared to other Star Wars projects. The production team aimed to distinguish the theatrical experience from the television series through these design choices.

  • Favreau and Filoni presented initial footage at Disney's D23 convention in August 2024. More footage was shown at D23 Brazil that November via video message from the set. A panel held at Star Wars Celebration Japan in April 2025 featured additional clips and discussion with cast members. A teaser trailer arrived online in late September 2025 after being delayed by corporate decisions regarding ABC programming. Matt Patches from Polygon described the teaser as feeling like a Jedi mind trick rather than a massive event. Andrew Webster for The Verge said it combined adventurous vibes with cuteness reminiscent of the original trilogy. Michael McWhertor of Polygon stated the trailer promised lots of action sequences. James Hibberd at The Hollywood Reporter called the tone different, lighthearted, and family friendly. Richard Newby also writing for The Hollywood Reporter questioned why a fourth season had not been made instead of a film. He believed a theatrical release should feel distinct from watching content on Disney+. The film is scheduled for release in the United States on the 22nd of May 2026. It will be available in IMAX format upon its debut.
