• 1. Introduction

  Boba Fett spent decades as one of the most recognizable figures in science fiction without ever speaking more than a handful of lines on screen. Audiences first saw him properly in The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, armored and wordless, and decades of fan imagination filled in everything the films left out. The Book of Boba Fett, created by Jon Favreau for Disney+, premiered on the 29th of December 2021 and set out to answer a question that had circulated for forty years: what kind of man is Boba Fett when he is not working for someone else? The seven-episode miniseries follows Fett as he seizes control of the criminal underworld on Tatooine, the desert planet Jabba the Hutt once dominated. It placed actor Temuera Morrison at the center of a story the franchise had long teased but never told, and its finale drew the highest viewership of any Star Wars series on Disney+ up to that point. How it got there, and what critics made of it, is a story involving a canceled film, a surprise post-credits reveal, and a deepfake expert hired off YouTube.

• 2. A Film That Never Was

  In February 2013, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced a slate of standalone Star Wars films, and a movie centered on Boba Fett was among the first considered. The story being developed would have taken place in the years between Star Wars in 1977 and Return of the Jedi in 1983, with room to explore the other bounty hunters glimpsed in The Empire Strikes Back. Simon Kinberg approached director Josh Trank about the project in early 2014, and Trank pitched his vision to Lucasfilm; he was hired that June. He was scheduled to announce the film at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in April 2015, but Lucasfilm pulled the plug at the last minute. The studio had become aware of serious problems on Trank's other production, Fantastic Four, which released in 2015, and by May of that year Trank was off the Fett project entirely. A Boba Fett film remained under active consideration as late as August 2017. James Mangold was then set to write and direct it, with Kinberg co-writing, and Mangold described his vision as a borderline R-rated, single-planet spaghetti Western. He listened to the music of Ennio Morricone while developing the script. The financial failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018 changed everything. By October of that year, the Boba Fett film was abandoned in favor of the Disney+ streaming series The Mandalorian, and Mangold later acknowledged the Solo failure's influence while also noting his script's dark tone may have complicated its future regardless.

• 3. The Surprise Reveal

  Temuera Morrison had already played a Fett once before, portraying Boba's father Jango Fett in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones in 2002, and had provided the voice of Boba in various Star Wars media since. In May 2020 it was confirmed he would appear as Boba Fett in the second season of The Mandalorian. His character was first glimpsed anonymously in the first season episode "Chapter 5: The Gunslinger", then given a brief role in the second-season premiere before his full introduction in "Chapter 14: The Tragedy", directed by Robert Rodriguez. By November 2020, industry watchers reported that filming was underway on either a third Mandalorian season or a Boba Fett spin-off. When Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy held her presentation at Disney's Investor Day on the 10th of December 2020, she announced the spin-offs Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka without any mention of Boba Fett. Kennedy said those series would culminate in a climactic story event. Then the second-season finale, "Chapter 16: The Rescue", arrived later that month with a surprise end-credits sequence announcing The Book of Boba Fett for December 2021. The reveal caused genuine confusion. Many viewers assumed it was a subtitle indicating The Mandalorian's third season would shift focus from Din Djarin to Fett. Favreau clarified the series was entirely separate, and explained the Investor Day omission was deliberate: they did not want to spoil the finale's surprise.

• 4. Building the Series

  Filming began by late November 2020 under the working title Buccaneer, on the StageCraft video wall volume in Los Angeles that the production shared with The Mandalorian. Crew members wore masks and face shields around actors, and COVID-19 testing ran on two schedules: rapid tests every three days and standard tests once a week. After two weeks of shooting, cast and crew learned they were not making The Mandalorian season three at all. The production referred to each episode using Mandalorian season-three numbering internally; the first episode was labeled 301 rather than the standard 101 for a new series. Rodriguez directed three episodes; Steph Green, Kevin Tancharoen, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Dave Filoni directed one each. Dean Cundey, David Klein, and Paul Hughen served as cinematographers. Filming wrapped on the 8th of June 2021, when the Obi-Wan Kenobi series took over the Los Angeles soundstages. Favreau wrote all seven episodes himself and co-wrote the sixth with Filoni. The character Krrsantan, a Wookiee bounty hunter introduced in Marvel Comics Star Wars comic books, made his live-action debut in the series, portrayed by Carey Jones. Corey Burton reprised his voice role as Cad Bane from the animated series The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, with Dorian Kingi portraying Bane physically on set.

• 5. Restoring a Face

  Mark Hamill appears in the series as Luke Skywalker, a role that required extensive digital work. As with Hamill's de-aged appearance in The Mandalorian, the character was constructed largely through visual effects and synthesized speech based on reference images and recordings of Hamill, with Graham Hamilton performing the role on set. The production improved on that earlier appearance in a notable way. Lucasfilm hired a YouTuber known as Shamook, a deepfake specialist whose viral enhancements of the young Luke Skywalker footage from The Mandalorian had visibly surpassed the quality of the official version. Shamook was brought on as a senior facial capture artist and helped significantly improve Luke's appearance in The Book of Boba Fett. Archive footage of Daniel Logan as a young Boba Fett, originally filmed for Attack of the Clones in 2002, was incorporated into the series. Finnegan Garay served as the on-set actor for young Fett when new material was required, and Morrison additionally voiced the clone troopers in Grogu's Order 66 flashback sequences.

• 6. Score and Sound

  Scoring sessions for the series began by late September 2021, with Ludwig Göransson, who composed for The Mandalorian, returning to write the main themes. Joseph Shirley, who had contributed additional music to The Mandalorian, served as composer for the bulk of the score. Walt Disney Records released Göransson's main theme as a digital single on the 28th of December 2021, the day before the series premiere. Swedish media noted a resemblance between the theme and Björn Isfält's music for the 1984 Swedish film Ronia, the Robber's Daughter. Shirley's score was released in two separate volumes: music from chapters one through four came out on the 21st of January 2022, and music from chapters five through seven followed on the 11th of February. Industrial Light & Magic led the visual effects work alongside Ghost VFX, Important Looking Pirates, Hybride, and SSVFX.

• 7. Viewership and Reception

  Analytics company Samba TV reported that 1.7 million U.S. households watched the debut episode within its first five days. Nielsen Media Research estimated the series accumulated 1.9 billion hours of viewership during its first four weeks, with weekly viewing rising steadily. The series drew 389 million minutes of viewing from the 27th of December through the 2nd of January 2022, rising to 563 million minutes the following week, and peaking at 885 million minutes during the week of the 7th of February 2022. The season finale drew 1.5 million viewers, a 36% increase over the second-season finale of The Mandalorian. Parrot Analytics reported the series led all series demand in the United States from January 1-7, 2022, at 39.5 times average series demand. Luminate later calculated that The Book of Boba Fett was Disney+'s most-streamed show in all of 2022, with 8.5 billion minutes viewed in the United States. Critical reception landed in murkier territory. Rotten Tomatoes recorded an approval rating of 66% from 198 reviews, with an average score of 6.8 out of 10. Metacritic placed the series at 59 out of 100 based on 19 critics. Reviewers consistently praised Morrison's performance; one critic wrote that his portrayal of a plain-speaking, humane antihero kept audiences endeared to Boba's story and that without Morrison the show might have been a total failure. The criticism that drew the most consensus involved the decision to remove Fett almost entirely from the series' penultimate two episodes to follow Din Djarin and other Mandalorian characters, a choice some critics called baffling and structurally damaging to the finale. The cyborg gang introduced on Tatooine was unfavorably compared to the Power Rangers. The series won the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie, with Richard Bluff, Abbigail Keller, Paul Kavanagh, and others recognized. It also won the Saturn Award for Best Streaming Limited Event Television Series. A Disney Gallery documentary episode about the making of the series was released on the 4th of May 2022.
