Ralph McQuarrie painted a golden humanoid figure in 1976 that drew directly from the female robot in Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis. Anthony Daniels saw one of these paintings and felt an immediate connection to the vulnerability visible on the droid's face. George Lucas selected Daniels for the physical performance after hearing about this reaction. The director initially planned to hire another actor for the voice because he wanted a sleazy New York second-hand car dealer type of sound. Thirty well-established actors auditioned for that role, including Richard Dreyfuss and Mel Blanc. One of those actors suggested the idea to Lucas that Daniels should do both parts. When Daniels took the job, the character transformed from an oily used-car salesman into a neurotic English butler. In a 1977 interview with Rolling Stone, Lucas described droids as the comic aspect of the original Star Wars film. He noted that C-3PO and R2-D2 were designed to resemble the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy.
Anthony Daniels Performance
Filming Star Wars proved challenging for Anthony Daniels due to the restrictive nature of his costume. His memoir I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story describes the first suit as claustrophobic and painful. It barely moved, cracked easily, and had no ventilation system inside. Daniels overheated constantly while wearing it and scraped himself up during movement. He could hardly see where he was going through the limited vision ports. The costume took two hours to put on each day. Removing the headpiece required thirty minutes of careful work. Although Star Wars became immensely successful, Daniels hesitated to return for The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. Publicists wanted audiences to believe a real robot played the part rather than an actor in a suit. Daniels felt his acting skills were undervalued by the marketing team. He eventually agreed to return only after receiving a higher salary offer. George Lucas wanted audience sympathy for the character by having him get dismantled. He considered having Darth Vader destroy the droid's heart or turn it into an alarm clock. In the finished film, stormtroopers blasted the protocol droid into pieces offscreen. Chewbacca found him dismantled on a conveyor belt and carried him away.
Original Trilogy Journey
C-3PO first appears aboard a Rebel ship that is boarded by Imperial forces in 1977. Princess Leia hides the golden droid and his companion R2-D2 in an escape pod jettisoned over Tatooine. Jawas capture them there and sell both units to Owen Lars. Luke Skywalker discovers a message from Leia while cleaning R2-D2. After stormtroopers destroy the Lars homestead, C-3PO joins Luke and Ob-Wan Kenobi on a mission to rescue Leia. They travel with smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca aboard the Millennium Falcon. On the Death Star, the pair shut down the trash compactor to save their companions' lives. The group escapes the station and joins the Rebel base at Yavin. When R2-D2 suffers damage during the Battle of Yavin, a grief-stricken C-3PO offers to donate his own parts to repair his counterpart. In The Empire Strikes Back, he identifies an Imperial probe droid that warns Rebels about an attack on Hoth. He escapes the planet with Han, Chewbacca, and Leia on the Millennium Falcon. They arrive at Cloud City where a stormtrooper blasts him apart offscreen. Chewbacca finds him dismantled on a conveyor belt and tries to rebuild him. The Wookiee puts his head on backwards before carrying the partially-rebuilt droid on his back. With help from Lando Calrissian, they escape Darth Vader's forces. R2-D2 successfully repairs C-3PO aboard the Falcon. At the start of Return of the Jedi, Luke sends them to Jabba the Hutt's palace. R2-D2 plays a recorded message offering the droids as a goodwill gift to the crime lord. Now serving Jabba, C-3PO acts as a translator when Leia and others arrive to liberate Han. Luke leads a successful escape attempt after Jabba foils their plan. On Endor, they are captured by Ewoks who perceive C-3PO as a deity. That night he narrates the history of the Rebellion's fight against the Empire to convince the tribe to help. After the second Death Star is destroyed, C-3PO celebrates the fall of the Empire with his friends.
Prequel Origins And Memory Wipe
The Phantom Menace reveals that C-3PO was built on Tatooine by nine-year-old slave boy Anakin Skywalker. The protocol droid meets his future companion R2-D2 along with Qui-Gon Jinn and Queen Padmé Amidala. He helps improve Anakin's podracer for the Boonta Eve Classic race and becomes part of the pit crew. C-3PO and Anakin part ways when Qui-Gon frees the boy from slavery. Before leaving, Anakin assures the droid that his mother Shmi will not sell him. Attack of the Clones shows Shmi kidnapped by Tusken Raiders ten years later. Anakin travels with Padmé to Tatooine where they reunite with C-3PO. He presents them to Owen Lars, Cliegg Lars, and Beru Whitesun. When Anakin returns with his mother's body, C-3PO attends her funeral. He follows R2-D2 into a droid-construction factory on Geonosis where his head gets exchanged with a battle droid. Influenced by the battle droid's programming, he reluctantly participates in the film's climactic battle scene. After being restored by R2-D2, he leaves Geonosis with his companions. At the end of the film, he witnesses Padmé and Anakin's marriage on Naboo. In Revenge of the Sith, C-3PO knows about Padmé's pregnancy before Anakin falls to the dark side. He rationalizes Vader's behavior by saying the Sith Lord has been under great stress. The protocol droid accompanies Padmé to Mustafar where he watches Vader strangle her unconscious. C-3PO and R2-D2 take her to safety when Ob-Wan returns after his duel. They pilot the ship to Polis Massa where Padmé gives birth to Luke and Leia. Captain Raymus Antilles takes ownership of both droids and orders C-3PO's memory erased. This decision protects the Skywalker children from their father and the newly created Galactic Empire.
Sequel Era And Canon Shifts
C-3PO appears in The Force Awakens with a red left arm and fluency in seven million forms of communication. He first appears with Leia and a Resistance team picking up Han, Chewbacca, Finn, Rey, and BB-8 on Takodana. During their adventures, he reunites with R2-D2 who reactivates after being shut off for years. In The Last Jedi, he serves as an assistant to Leia and Poe Dameron. Anthony Daniels complained that his character was merely table decoration in this film. He stated that C-3PO is worth more than just standing there. In The Rise of Skywalker, the group travels to Passana searching for a Sith wayfinder clue. With help from Lando, they locate a dagger inscribed with Sith language runes. C-3PO translates the runes but his programming prevents him from sharing the translation. The group goes to Kijimi where a black-market droid-smith extracts the message. This process erases his memory completely when he returns to the Resistance camp. R2-D2 manages to restore his memory once they reach safety again.
Expanded Universe Adventures
Star Wars Legends novels present C-3PO translating Ssi-ruuvi to aid the Alliance in The Truce at Bakura. He and R2-D2 become members of the Senate Planetary Intelligence Network in The Glove of Darth Vader. They disguise themselves as Kessel droids to infiltrate Imperial gatherings. In The Courtship of Princess Leia, Han kidnaps Leia and takes her to Dathomir while C-3PO believes Han is King of Corellia. He later discovers Han's ancestor was merely a pretender to the throne. Following their marriage, C-3PO travels to Tatooine in Tatooine Ghost to search for an Alderaanian moss painting. He reunites with Kitster Banai and Wald, childhood friends of Anakin Skywalker. They discover Shmi Skywalker's diary together. In Heir to the Empire, Lando reprograms C-3PO to sound like Leia on Nkllon. Grand Admiral Thrawn sees through the deception immediately. Dark Force Rising shows him going to Honoghr with Leia during the Thrawn Crisis. He hides with Leia and Chewbacca when Imperial forces arrive before returning to Coruscant. He cares for Jaina and Jacen Solo after Leia gives birth there. The Black Fleet Crisis trilogy features him investigating the Teljkon Vagabond with Lando and Lobot. They discover the last vestiges of the Quella civilization inside the runaway ship. Star Wars Tales story Thank the Maker reveals Vader found the defunct droid in Watto's junk heap decades earlier. Queen Jamillia appoints C-3PO as liaison to the Jedi in The New Face of War. A 1994 Dark Horse Comics series titled Droids continues adventures before the original film events.
Cultural Impact And Legacy
A photograph appeared on a Topps Star Wars trading card in 1977 showing what looked like a prominent phallus. It was later withdrawn from circulation by the company. In 2019, Anthony Daniels said the costume became compromised during an oil bath scene in A New Hope. Warm liquid caused the suit to separate leading to over-exposure of plastic in that region. He speculated an artist could have painted in the extended appendage. C-3PO entered the Robot Hall of Fame in 2004 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A lifesize replica now sits at the Carnegie Science Center in that city. The U.S. Navy built an Autonomous Shipboard Humanoid robot in 2012 modeled after him. This unit extinguishes fires and climbs ladders while carrying hoses similar to the movie droid. One NASA program named Commercial Crew & Cargo Program Office uses his acronym C3PO. Nicolas Ghesquière created fashion designs inspired by the golden protocol droid for Louis Vuitton. Rodarte also produced clothing lines influenced by his appearance. The August 2015 issue of GQ featured comedian Amy Schumer wearing Princess Leia's bikini. She sucked one of his fingers which Lucasfilm and Disney objected to publicly. In Italy, he was called D-3BO because Anglicisms were uncommon during the 1970s and 1980s. Some name changes reverted when dubbing the prequel and sequel trilogies began.
