The Batman (film)

8 sections
  • The Batman, a 2022 superhero film directed by Matt Reeves, made its first big impression with a teaser trailer. Shown during a virtual fan event in 2020, the footage drew 34 million views within 24 hours. Commentators called its Gotham dystopic and nightmarish, and one writer said it looked more like a detective story than a superhero film. The finished film became a commercial success and mostly pleased critics. Yet it began life as a very different project, with a different star and a different universe around it. How did a planned Batman blockbuster change hands? What happens when Batman is treated as a detective first and a fighter second? How does a film survive a shoot halted by a global pandemic? And why do so many critics read a story about a masked vigilante as a story about money and class?

  • Ben Affleck was cast as Bruce Wayne for the DC Extended Universe in 2013, and he soon began developing a standalone Batman film of his own. Warner Bros. Pictures announced the project in October 2014. By July 2015 Affleck was attached to direct and co-write with Geoff Johns, and the pair finished a first draft in March 2016. That October, Affleck revealed the title: The Batman.

Then the plans slipped. A sequel to the team-up film Justice League (2017) was delayed to make room, but the reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) led Warner Bros. to rethink its whole approach. Affleck's film was sidelined. He grew uneasy about directing, citing script problems and a sense that he would not enjoy it. In January 2017 he announced he was leaving the director's chair, and Chris Terrio turned in a rewrite around that time.

In February 2017, Matt Reeves, a longtime Batman fan, was hired to replace him. Reeves cut the ties to the DCEU and moved the story earlier in the hero's vigilante career. In January 2019, Affleck confirmed that he would no longer star, citing various personal issues. Robert Pattinson was cast that May, a choice that drew initial backlash from some fans. More actors followed later that year, especially for Batman's rogues gallery.

Reeves wrote a new script with Mattson Tomlin and Peter Craig. He wanted a noir told from Batman's own point of view, with the detective work given more weight than in earlier films. His comic book sources included Batman: The Long Halloween (1996-97), Dark Victory (1999-2000), "Year One" (1987), Ego (2000) and "Zero Year" (2013-14). His film sources came from the New Hollywood era: The French Connection (1971), Klute (1971), Chinatown (1974), All the President's Men and Taxi Driver (1976), along with the work of Alfred Hitchcock. He also carried over a habit from television, spending more time on fewer camera angles, a method he had developed on the series Felicity (1998-2002).

  • On Halloween, Gotham City's mayor, Don Mitchell Jr., is murdered by a masked killer who calls himself the Riddler. Bruce Wayne, a reclusive billionaire who has spent two years as the vigilante Batman, investigates beside Lieutenant Jim Gordon, to the disdain of the Gotham City Police Department. The killer leaves a message addressed to Batman at the scene. The next night he kills police commissioner Pete Savage and leaves another.

A thumb drive in Mitchell's car holds images of the mayor's affair with a woman named Annika Kosolov at the Iceberg Lounge. The nightclub is run by the Penguin, a lieutenant of crime boss Carmine Falcone. During questioning, Batman notices that Annika's roommate, Selina Kyle, works there as a waitress. When Annika disappears, Batman and Selina find that Savage, Mitchell and district attorney Gil Colson were all on Falcone's payroll.

The Riddler then abducts Colson, straps a collar bomb to his neck and sends him to interrupt Mitchell's funeral. Calling on a phone taped to Colson, the killer demands answers to three riddles. The third asks for the name of the informant whose tip helped end mob boss Salvatore Maroni's drug operation. Colson refuses to answer and is killed.

Batman and Gordon suspect the Penguin and track him to a drug deal. There they learn that Maroni's operation passed to Falcone, with many corrupt officers involved. Selina exposes them by accident when she arrives to steal money and finds Annika's body in a car trunk. Batman captures the Penguin after a car chase, only to learn he is not the informant.

The trail next leads to the ruins of an orphanage once funded by Bruce's late parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne. The Riddler holds a grudge against the family for failing it. Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce's butler, ends up in hospital after opening a letter bomb meant for Bruce. Then the Riddler leaks evidence that Thomas, who was running for mayor before he was murdered, hired Falcone to kill a journalist controlled by Maroni. The journalist was writing about Martha's family history of mental illness. Alfred insists Thomas only wanted the man threatened into silence, and that when Falcone killed him, Thomas planned to report them both to the police. Alfred believes Falcone had Thomas and Martha killed to keep them quiet.

Selina tells Batman that Falcone is her father. She learns he killed Annika because Annika had discovered he was the informant, and Selina tries to kill him. Batman and Gordon arrive in time to stop her, and Gordon arrests Falcone. Moments later, the Riddler shoots Falcone dead with a sniper rifle. The Riddler gives himself up and is unmasked as forensic accountant Edward Nashton.

Held at Arkham State Hospital, Nashton tells Batman that Batman himself inspired him to target the corrupt. Car bombs he planted then destroy the seawall around Gotham and flood the city. His online followers plan to assassinate Mayor-elect Bella Reál at her victory celebration in an arena. Batman and Selina stop them, and Batman saves the crowd from electrocution in the rising water and leads them out. Selina decides Gotham is beyond saving and leaves. Batman stays to help the city recover, vowing to inspire hope rather than exact vengeance. In his cell, Nashton befriends another inmate.

  • Robert Pattinson plays a Batman of around 30 who is not yet an experienced crime fighter, and Reeves wanted exactly that unfinished version. Both men described an insomniac who cannot separate the Batman persona from his public image as a "recluse rockstar". Reeves compared the character's obsession to a drug addiction. Pattinson said the film asks what heroism means when its hero is more flawed than most and cannot control himself.

Zoë Kravitz plays Selina Kyle, a nightclub waitress, drug dealer and cat burglar whose moral ambiguity challenges Batman's black-and-white view of good and evil. Kravitz chose to focus on Selina's emotional journey rather than the Catwoman persona. She also interpreted the character as bisexual, as some comics depict her. Reeves saw Selina as the person who makes Batman aware of his sheltered upbringing.

Paul Dano plays Edward Nashton, a forensic accountant who live-streams his crimes. An orphan raised in abject poverty, he resents Gotham's affluent people for ignoring the less fortunate. Reeves likened him to the Zodiac Killer, who also communicated through ciphers and riddles. Reeves found the overlap between the Riddler's goals and Batman's unsettling.

Jeffrey Wright's Jim Gordon starts as a lieutenant, as in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005-2012). That leaves room for a rise to commissioner in later films. Wright felt this gave him a larger role than earlier versions of the character had. Reeves compared the partnership between Gordon and Batman to Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward in All the President's Men.

John Turturro's Carmine Falcone appears to be a "genteel mobster", in Reeves's words, but hides a dark history like Noah Cross in Chinatown. Falcone wears vintage sunglasses throughout, because Turturro felt the character needed a "mask".

Andy Serkis plays Alfred Pennyworth, a former military man. Reeves conceived Alfred's cane, and Serkis suggested the facial scars. Serkis imagined Alfred in the secret service before joining Wayne Enterprises security, which made him more a teacher to Bruce than the father figure a child needed. Reeves noted that Alfred was young and inexperienced when he became Bruce's parent, and feels guilty that his flawed parenting may have fed Bruce's obsession.

Barry Keoghan appears briefly as the Joker, held in Arkham State Hospital and credited only as "Unseen Arkham Prisoner". Jayme Lawson plays mayoral candidate Bella Reál, whom Reeves said represents hope.

Colin Farrell, as Oz, is unrecognizable. Makeup artist Mike Marino built heavy prosthetics and a fat suit that took two to four hours to apply. Reeves called this Penguin a "mid-level mobster" with some showmanship, underestimated and wanting more. He compared him to Fredo Corleone in The Godfather (1972), who feels insignificant among capable and powerful men. During the making of the later series The Penguin (2024), producer Dylan Clark said the surname Cobblepot was shortened to Cobb to make the character more grounded.

  • Principal photography began in January 2020 in London, under the working title Vengeance. Around a quarter of the film was shot when the COVID-19 pandemic stopped production, two months after filming started. Reeves used the shutdown to review the footage he already had and to explore the film's tone, but he did not rewrite the script. Filming resumed in September after several setbacks and wrapped in March 2021. Location shooting took place in Scotland, Liverpool and Chicago, with soundstage work at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

Greig Fraser, who had worked with Reeves on Let Me In (2010), served as cinematographer. James Chinlund was production designer. The team used StageCraft, the virtual production technology Fraser helped develop at Industrial Light & Magic for the Disney+ series The Mandalorian (2019-2023). It gave them consistent golden hour lighting, inspired by the look of In the Mood for Love (2000).

Dan Lemmon, who had worked with Reeves on the Planet of the Apes films, supervised the visual effects. Over 1,500 shots were created by Wētā FX, ILM, Scanline VFX and Crafty Apes.

Editing was especially hard. Warner Bros. set strict protocols that kept co-editors William Hoy and Tyler Nelson from working directly with Reeves. They began at home in the early months of the pandemic. Throughout 2021 they used several AVID systems on the Warner Bros. Studios Burbank lot, trying to recreate Reeves's fast-paced, collaborative editing style from isolated rooms.

The result is the longest Batman film. Only Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) run longer among superhero films. The budget was $185-200 million, and Pattinson earned a salary of $3 million. Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, Reeves's 6th & Idaho and Dylan Clark Productions produced it.

Michael Giacchino, a frequent Reeves collaborator, was announced as composer in October 2019, by which time he had already written the main theme. He finished the score in October 2021. The theme was released as a single on the 20th of January 2022, and the full album followed on the 25th of February. The Nirvana song "Something in the Way" (1991) appears twice in the film. Its bass line resembles Giacchino's score, which he called a coincidence, saying he was fortunate that his work "lied in perfectly against that song." Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria" also features, performed by the Tiffin Boys' Choir and Paul Dano.

  • On the 13th of February 2020, Reeves released "moody, red-saturated" test footage of Pattinson in the Batman costume, with early music by Giacchino. Chris Evangelista of SlashFilm thought this Batman looked very different from earlier screen versions. Richard Newby of The Hollywood Reporter spotted references to past incarnations and wondered whether the chest emblem might echo the pistol that killed Batman's parents. The heavy use of red set off talk about how the tone would differ from earlier adaptations. On the 4th of March, Reeves released an image of the Batmobile, which Dino-Ray Ramos of Deadline Hollywood found "sexier and more streamlined" than before.

The teaser trailer debuted at the virtual DC FanDome event on the 22nd of August 2020. It paired a remix of Nirvana's "Something in the Way" with Giacchino's score. CNET's Bonnie Burton and Jennifer Bisset said it "set the internet on fire". Adam Chitwood of Collider praised a "genuinely refreshing" approach to Batman's world. Alex Abad-Santos of Vox saw more in common with the R-rated Joker (2019) than with other recent DC films, and noted that some critics disliked the dark tone.

On the 24th of August 2021, Reeves and Pattinson showed a sizzle reel of new footage at the Warner Bros. CinemaCon panel. A second trailer closed DC FanDome on the 16th of October. Adam B. Vary of Variety compared it to Nolan's "gritty" Dark Knight films and believed this one would be darker and more violent still. Several commentators highlighted Farrell's transformation. A Japanese trailer released on the 12th of December led to speculation about the Joker after fans spotted a figure resembling him on a newspaper prop.

In December 2021 Warner Bros. launched a viral campaign around a website tied to the phrase Rata alada, Spanish for "winged rat". Users could hold simulated conversations with the Riddler, and solving his riddles unlocked promotional material. The final reward was a deleted scene in which Batman meets Keoghan's Joker in Arkham. A third trailer, titled "The Bat and the Cat", arrived on the 27th of December and focused on Batman and Catwoman. Asha Barbaschow and Rob Bricken of Gizmodo thought Pattinson looked like a better Batman than Bale and Affleck.

WarnerMedia spent $135 million promoting the film, including over $28 million on television advertisements. It also licensed what it called the largest Batman merchandise collection in a decade. In February 2022, Google Search queries about Batman began showing a Bat-Signal Easter egg. A prequel novel by David Lewman, exploring the origins of Batman and the Riddler, appeared on the 1st of February. After the release, Reeves announced The Riddler: Year One (2022-23), a DC Black Label prequel comic series that Dano wrote himself.

  • The Batman was first set for the 25th of June 2021. Delays pushed it to the 1st of October 2021 and then to March 2022, both times because Warner Bros. adjusted its schedule for the pandemic. The world premiere took place at the Lincoln Center in New York City on the 1st of March 2022, alongside 350 advance IMAX screenings across the United States. Wide release came on the 4th of March. It was the first Warner Bros. film in over a year that did not stream on HBO Max at the same time as its theatrical run. It was also the first superhero film released in China since Wonder Woman 1984 (2020). In February 2022, Warner Bros. canceled the Russian release because of the invasion of Ukraine.

The film grossed $369.3 million in the United States and Canada and $402.9 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $772.3 million. That made it the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2022 and the highest-grossing serial killer film. It earned $57 million on its first day in the United States and Canada, then $134 million over its opening weekend. Only Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) had previously topped $100 million in a pandemic-era opening. More than 65% of that weekend's audience was male, and more than 60% were aged 18-34. It reached $500 million on the 17th of March and $750 million on the 17th of April.

Overseas, it opened to $2.1 million in France, the highest opening there in 2022. In China it made $11.8 million in its first weekend with up to 43% of theaters closed, the best opening there that year for an American film. IMAX results lifted the company's first-quarter revenue by 55%. Deadline Hollywood put the film's net profit at $177 million.

On home screens, it reached HBO Max on the 18th of April 2022. Samba TV reported that 720,000 American households streamed it on the first day and 4.1 million within the first week. Only Mortal Kombat (2021), at 4.3 million households, did better among films on the platform in its first week.

Critics hailed it as one of the best Batman films, praising Reeves's grounded direction, the noir detective story, the performances of Pattinson and Kravitz, the cinematography and the score. The dark tone and long runtime drew mixed responses, and the third act drew some criticism. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus called it a "grim, gritty, and gripping super-noir". Metacritic gave it 72 out of 100 from 68 critics. CinemaScore audiences gave it an "A minus ", and 87% of PostTrak respondents rated it positively.

IGN's Alex Stedman gave it 10 out of 10, praising its accuracy to the comics. Adam Nayman of The Ringer compared its style to Hitchcock but found the climax underwhelming. Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post gave it one-and-a-half out of four, citing the dark visuals and the runtime. A. O. Scott of The New York Times praised the performances and score but found the dark visuals and exposition overwhelming.

At the 95th Academy Awards, the film received nominations for Best Sound, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Visual Effects. It also earned four British Academy Film Award nominations and three from the Critics' Choice Movie Awards.

  • Marco Vito Oddo of Collider argued that the film's main theme is social inequality. Three central figures, Batman, the Riddler and Catwoman, are orphans from different economic backgrounds. Batman grew up in privilege, the Riddler knew only torment, and Catwoman knew hardship. JM Mutore of The A.V. Club and Susana Polo of Polygon said the Riddler falls into "the trap of villains who are right". Brandon Zachary of Comic Book Resources countered that he is "inherently wrong" to think violence can bring change. Adam Nayman called Batman and the Riddler "secret siblings". Chrishaun Baker of Inverse wrote that the film ends with Batman learning he must fight for the will of the people, among the people, against institutions that make hollow promises.

Baker also noted that Tim Burton's Batman films were libertarian and Nolan's "vaguely authoritarian", whereas this one questions Batman's ethics and his wealth. Bella Reál confronts Bruce about that wealth directly. Mutore felt the film still sidesteps the argument by showing Thomas Wayne's philanthropy leading only to corruption.

The Batman also treats grief and post-traumatic stress. Critics read Batman's coldness toward Alfred and Selina as the result of losing his parents and fearing more pain. Marcus Shorter of Bloody Disgusting described his crimefighting as a "dogmatic dedication". Police also treat him differently here. Burton's police were incompetent and Nolan's bent the law to help him, but Gotham's officers view this Batman as a criminal who represents oversight they are not used to.

The Batman is intended to start a trilogy and a shared universe called the "Batman Epic Crime Saga". DC Studios labels it "DC Elseworlds", a continuity separate from the DC Universe, and considered but rejected folding Pattinson's Batman into that universe. The spin-off series The Penguin ran for eight episodes on HBO from the 19th of September to the 10th of November 2024. It follows the Penguin's rise in the underworld after the film, with Farrell as star and executive producer. Mark Strong plays a younger Carmine Falcone and Clancy Brown plays Salvatore Maroni.

A planned police series set in Batman's first year, developed at HBO Max from July 2020, ran into creative trouble. Terence Winter left as showrunner in November, and Joe Barton replaced him in January 2021. HBO disliked a protagonist who was a corrupt cop and urged Reeves to focus on existing comic characters. That work led to an Arkham State Hospital series, envisioned as a haunted house. Both series were no longer moving forward by July 2024, though some elements of the police series went into The Penguin.

The Batman: Part II was announced in April 2022, with Reeves returning to direct and co-write with Mattson Tomlin. Reeves finished the script in June 2025 after repeated delays. Pattinson, Wright, Serkis, Farrell and Lawson return, and Keoghan is expected back as the Joker. Sebastian Stan joins as Harvey Dent, Scarlett Johansson as his wife Gilda, and Charles Dance as his father. Filming was scheduled to start in June 2026 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, with location work in London, Liverpool and Glasgow. The sequel is set for release on the 1st of October 2027.
