Andrew Clement Serkis arrived in the world on the 20th of April 1964 within the quiet suburb of Ruislip Manor. His childhood unfolded across two distinct continents, with time spent in both Britain and Iraq. The family home shifted between Ruislip and the bustling streets of Baghdad during his formative years. His mother Lylie Weech taught disabled children while her own heritage blended English and Iraqi roots. Father Clement Serkis worked as a gynaecologist often stationed abroad throughout the Middle East region.
The family maintained regular holidays visiting Tyre Sidon Damascus and Baghdad before returning to England. Both parents held devout Catholic beliefs that shaped their household values despite later changes. Serkis attended St Benedict's School in Ealing where he first encountered structured education. He pursued visual arts and theatre studies at Lancaster University graduating in 1985 after four years of study.
During his final year at university he adapted Raymond Briggs's graphic novel into a one-man show. This production titled The Tin-Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman received acclaim from audiences. The satirical piece examined the Falklands War through a single performer's lens. Serkis changed his major subject from visual arts to acting based on this experience.

Peter Jackson cast Andrew Serkis as Sméagol or Gollum for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy spanning 2001 to 2003. He provided motion-capture movements and voice work for the computer-generated character. Producer Barrie M. Osborne campaigned for an Academy Award nomination citing Serkis's body language and facial expressions. Serkis performed motion-capture work in several other films including King Kong released in 2005. He also played Caesar across three Planet of the Apes reboot films starting with Rise in 2011. James Franco stated that Serkis was the undisputed master of motion capture technology during a high-profile campaign.
