  • Warner Bros. Pictures began developing a live-action Justice League film in February 2007 with husband-and-wife duo Michele and Kieran Mulroney hired to write the script. The project was initially titled Justice League: Mortal, and the studio fast-tracked production hoping to begin filming before the 2007, 08 Writers Guild of America strike. George Miller signed on as director in September 2007, bringing a projected budget of $220 million. Roughly 40 actors auditioned for roles including D. J. Cotrona as Superman and Armie Hammer as Batman. Megan Gale was cast as Wonder Woman, while Santiago Cabrera eventually revealed himself as Aquaman after the film's cancellation.

The writers strike that same month placed the entire project on hold. Warner Bros. had to let options lapse for the cast, but development resumed in February 2008 once the strike ended. Production offices moved from Sydney to Vancouver Film Studios in Canada after the Australian government denied a 40 percent tax rebate. Filming was pushed back to July 2008, though Warner Bros. remained confident about a summer 2009 release. Jason Reitman originally turned down directing duties, citing his preference for independent filmmaking over big-budget superhero movies. By October 2012, following legal victories over Joe Shuster's estate, Warner Bros. announced plans to move forward with a new Justice League film.

  • Principal photography began on the 11th of April 2016, at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and various locations around London and Scotland. Additional filming took place in Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles; and Djúpavík in Iceland's Westfjords. Snyder's longtime cinematographer Larry Fong was replaced by Fabian Wagner due to scheduling conflicts. Ben Affleck served as executive producer while Geoff Johns and Jon Berg produced the films and oversaw the DC Extended Universe. The production faced significant challenges during filming, with rewrites by Johns causing issues between Chris Terrio and Warner Bros. executives.

In May 2017, Zack Snyder stepped down from directorial duties following the suicide of his daughter Autumn. Joss Whedon assumed control to oversee post-production and complete the film. That July, the studio announced two months of reshoots in London and Los Angeles, costing approximately $25 million. This brought the total budget up to an estimated $300 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made. Whedon received screenwriting credit alongside Chris Terrio, though Snyder retained sole director credit. Cinematographer Fabian Wagner estimates only 10 percent of original footage appeared in the final theatrical cut.

  • Justice League premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on the 13th of November 2017, before releasing in the United States four days later. The film grossed $661.3 million worldwide against a break-even point of $750 million, losing the studio around $60 million according to Deadline Hollywood. Industry tracking initially forecast a debut of $110, 120 million from over 4,000 theaters including 400 IMAX screens. It ended up debuting to $93.8 million, down 45 percent from Batman v Superman's opening of $166 million.

Critical response proved mixed to negative with praise for cast performances but criticism for character development and visual effects. Richard Roeper gave the film 3.5 out of 4 stars while Todd McCarthy called it visually ugly and boring. Peter Travers awarded 2.5 out of 4 stars praising humor but criticizing action sequences. James Berardinelli rated it 2 out of 4 stars noting DC Films came late to the party compared to Marvel Studios. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins particularly disliked Justice League because it seemed to contradict her own film despite efforts to maintain continuity between their projects.

  • A campaign emerged allowing fans to advocate for Zack Snyder's original vision after his departure left Joss Whedon in control of the final cut. In March 2019, Snyder confirmed his original version existed and stated Warner Bros. needed to release it. By December, Snyder posted photos showing boxes labeled Z.S. J.L Director's cut on his Vero account asking if they were real. He officially confirmed in May 2020 that his cut would be released for HBO Max service in 2021.

Completing the special effects, musical score, and editing cost over $70 million. Original cast members including Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, and Ezra Miller returned remotely to help finish the project with limited additional filming. Jared Leto appeared as the Joker while Amy Adams played Lois Lane and J.K. Simmons portrayed Commissioner Gordon in this extended version. The theatrical cut became known among fans as the Whedon Cut or Josstice League. Despite being far better received than the theatrical version, Snyder stated his cut would not become canon to the DC Extended Universe.

  • Ray Fisher claimed in July 2020 that Joss Whedon's treatment of the film's cast and crew was gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable. Following Fisher's statements, Whedon's conduct on earlier productions came under renewed scrutiny. Several actors associated with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel publicly alleged comparable behavior. Gal Gadot claimed in May 2021 that Whedon threatened to harm her career for refusing to record lines she did not want to say in the film.

Whedon denied allegations by Gadot stating it was miscommunication since she is not a native English speaker. Chris Terrio called the theatrical cut an act of vandalism and attempted unsuccessfully to get his name removed from the film. Henry Cavill grew a mustache during reshoots which created conflict when Paramount Pictures needed him for Mission: Impossible , Fallout. Director Christopher McQuarrie requested $3 million from Justice League production to digitally re-add facial hair until it regrew. Paramount executives eventually intervened and refused permission altogether necessitating digital removal of the mustache for Justice League.

  • James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in 2022 after De Luca and Abdy led the division previously. In October 2023, Variety reported that no actors from Zack Snyder's DCEU films would reprise their roles in the new DC Universe. A July 2025 Wall Street Journal article indicated Gunn and Safran planned to make a new Justice League film set in the DCU. Despite Snyder stating he would be willing to return if offered the chance, Warner Bros. considered his cut a storytelling cul-de-sac with no sequels currently planned.
