  • In August 2003, Nicole Scherzinger walked into the Arista Records office in New York carrying a demo CD of songs she had written herself. She was performing under her Hawaiian family name, Nicole Kea, and she wanted a solo recording contract. Partway through her performance, a citywide blackout struck, and she had to leave. Within months she would be auditioning for something quite different. The group she joined went on to sell over 55 million records worldwide. Yet the solo career she wanted that day proved much harder to win, especially in her native United States. This documentary follows a singer from Hawaii and Kentucky through girl groups, television judging panels and theatre stages. Along the way it asks why a voice that some critics called powerful and others called anonymous carried her so far, and what the journey cost her.

  • Nicole Prascovia Elikolani Valiente was born in Honolulu on the 29th of June 1978. Her father, Alfonso Valiente, is of Filipino descent. Her mother, Rosemary Elikolani, is of Native Hawaiian, Russian and Ukrainian descent. When Nicole was two, her father divorced her mother and left the family. Her mother then married Gary Scherzinger, a German-American who adopted her and whose surname she eventually took. She also has a younger half-sister, Keala.

The family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, when Nicole was six. Her mother worked as a clerk and her stepfather as a welder. Scherzinger describes a difficult childhood spent "without much money." She helped support her parents by waitressing, taking local modelling jobs and performing with an entertainment troupe at the Kentucky Kingdom amusement park.

Her grandfather was a priest, and she was raised Roman Catholic. She thought of herself as conservative, with "really strong religious beliefs," and went to church twice a week to make her mother proud.

At the age of 14, she joined the Actors Theatre of Louisville and was cast in her first professional play, La Bête. She graduated in 1996 from the Youth Performing Arts School at duPont Manual High School. There she played Alice in Alice in Wonderland, and she was surprised to win the part because she was up "against a girl with blue eyes and blonde hair." In 2007 the school's alumni inducted her into their Hall of Fame as one of its youngest members. Since 2013 she has endowed a yearly $2,000 scholarship there in her own name.

A scholarship then took her to Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where she majored in Theatre Arts with a minor in Dance. She won lead roles in regional productions of Chicago, Guys and Dolls and Show Boat. In her final year, Travis Meeks, the leader of the rock band Days of the New, hired her to sing on the band's second self-titled album. He wanted a singer who could "deliver some more world/operatic textures and sounds." The album's supporting tour led her to drop out of college. Near the tour's end, Meeks said the two had grown apart creatively and that she "didn't seem to understand music very well." He still called her an "amazing entertainer." Wright State's alumni association later named her its 2017 Alumna of the Year, an award she received in 2018.

In 2001, her mother saw a commercial for a WB television show called Popstars USA.

  • Popstars USA set out to film the formation of a music group, from the first auditions to the recording of a debut album. Warner Bros. imprint London-Sire Records signed the group before it had a name or a final lineup. The label was betting on the many hours of network exposure ahead.

Scherzinger was reluctant to audition at first. She changed her mind when she realised it was a chance to travel to Los Angeles. For her audition she sang Whitney Houston's version of Dolly Parton's song "I Will Always Love You."

She joined Ana Maria Lombo, Maile Misajon, Ivette Sosa and Rosanna Tavarez to form the girl group Eden's Crush. Their debut single, "Get Over Yourself," came out in March 2001 and debuted at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. It also made them the first female act to debut at number one on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. Their album Popstars arrived the same year and debuted at number six on the Billboard 200. The group toured with 'N Sync and Jessica Simpson. By the end of the year, however, their label had gone bankrupt and the group disbanded.

During this period, will.i.am, the front man of The Black Eyed Peas, approached Scherzinger about joining his group. Her then-boyfriend, Nick Hexum of the band 311, declined on her behalf. After Eden's Crush ended, she took a detour into acting. She guest-starred on television shows including My Wife and Kids in 2002, and she had a cameo in the independent comedy Chasing Papi in 2003.

That cameo came in the same year her ambitions turned back toward a recording contract.

  • Robin Antin had created the Pussycat Dolls as a burlesque troupe, and she struck a joint venture with Interscope Records. Together with producers Jimmy Iovine and Ron Fair, she launched an open audition for a separate recording group. Will.i.am recommended Scherzinger to Iovine. She still hoped for a solo deal, but she auditioned in December 2003 alongside Melody Thornton. The two joined Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta and Kimberly Wyatt.

As lead singer, Scherzinger took the majority of the vocals. She is the only member with songwriting credits on the debut album, PCD, released in September 2005. The album was preceded by "Don't Cha," the group's international breakthrough, which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Further hits followed in "Stickwitu" and "Buttons." "Stickwitu" earned a nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. Her leadership role drew criticism from critics and from fellow members.

The second and final album, Doll Domination, was released in the United States on the 23rd of September 2008 and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. Its singles "When I Grow Up" and "I Hate This Part" reached numbers nine and eleven on the Hot 100. Both songs had originally been recorded for Scherzinger's solo project. The Doll Domination Tour began on the 18th of January 2009.

During that tour, Scherzinger was asked to rewrite the pop version of "Jai Ho" from the film Slumdog Millionaire. The result, "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)," credited A. R. Rahman and the Pussycat Dolls, but it listed Scherzinger as a featured artist. That caused dissatisfaction within the group. The song reached number one in 17 countries. In the United States it peaked at number fifteen on the Hot 100, after climbing eighty-five places in a single week from number 100, the largest weekly leap on that chart.

On the 5th of April 2009, Scherzinger sang "America the Beautiful" at Wrestlemania XXV at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. The tour ended in August 2009, and the group announced a hiatus so members could pursue solo careers. In October 2010, Scherzinger announced she was leaving the group to focus on her own music.

The Dolls did not stay apart for good. In 2019, Sutta, Bachar, Roberts, Scherzinger and Wyatt reunited at the finale of The X Factor: Celebrity. They performed a medley of old singles and a new song, "React." Ofcom, the British media regulator, received over 400 complaints from viewers who found the performance too provocative. A planned reunion tour was put on hold after Antin sued Scherzinger, and it was officially canceled in January 2022. The stated reasons were logistical difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and business issues between the two women. In 2024, Scherzinger settled the dispute over the tour and said she was open to another reunion someday.

  • In February 2006, Scherzinger signed a global publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group covering her future songwriting. Her first solo recording was a guest spot on Avant's "Lie About Us," released in July 2006. She then teamed with Sean Combs on "Come to Me," which became her first solo top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

In March 2007, she announced that her debut album would be called Her Name is Nicole. Four singles followed: "Whatever U Like" featuring T.I., "Baby Love" featuring will.i.am, "Supervillain" and "Puakenikeni." None made a significant impact on the Billboard charts, though "Baby Love" did moderately well abroad. After several delays, Scherzinger chose to release no more singles, and at her request the album was shelved. She says she has shelved five albums in all, and she calls herself a perfectionist. Billboard later argued that the cancellation of Her Name Is Nicole hampered her solo career.

The album had mixed pop, R&B, hip hop and rock, in an effort to set her apart from her role as the Dolls' lead vocalist. "Puakenikeni" took its name from a flower introduced to Hawaii, and she has worked her Hawaiian heritage into other music. The video for "Right There" featured Hawaiian and Tahitian fashion and dance moves.

In October 2010, she released "Poison," which peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart. Her debut album, Killer Love, followed in the United Kingdom on the 21st of March 2011. It debuted and peaked at number eight on the UK Albums Chart, and by November it had sold over 140,000 copies. The album leaned toward Europop, with dance and electronic influences, and it was two-thirds up-tempo songs and one-third ballads. "Don't Hold Your Breath" became her first solo number one on the UK Singles Chart, and "Right There" reached number three. A remix of "Right There" featuring 50 Cent peaked at number thirty-nine in the United States, which remains her highest Hot 100 position as a lead artist. It was meant to launch a US edition of Killer Love, but after repeated delays that release never happened. The UK version was reissued with four extra songs, including the final single, "Try with Me."

In March 2013, she released "Boomerang," which debuted and peaked at number six in the United Kingdom. Its lackluster success led her to scrap the album it was meant for. In February 2014, she signed with Sony Music Entertainment and RCA Records for a reported $4.5 million. Her second album, Big Fat Lie, came out in October 2014. She cited Janet Jackson's 1997 album The Velvet Rope as its main inspiration, and Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour pushed her to get "emotionally raw." The album's themes included fame, love, sex and relationship problems. Its singles were "Your Love," "Run" and "On the Rocks." Sales in the United Kingdom were lackluster, and she left the label the following year. Both Killer Love and Big Fat Lie were released in territories other than the United States.

In April 2022, she held a three-night musical showcase at The Sun Rose in Hollywood. She sang numbers from musical theatre and announced a return to solo music, saying she wanted "to create a space for me where I can live out my full potential as an artist, without having to be defined by any style or genre of music." She debuted "Never Going Back" from an upcoming EP called Warrior and confirmed she was unsigned. On the 24th of June 2022, she released "The Drop," a collaboration with French DJ David Guetta and Dimitri Vegas, also featuring Azteck.

  • In December 2009, Scherzinger was announced as the third judge on the first season of The Sing-Off, joining Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men. She returned for the second season before Sara Bareilles replaced her.

In May 2010, she and her dance partner, Derek Hough, won the tenth season of Dancing with the Stars. That July she sat in for Dannii Minogue as a guest judge on The X Factor UK, during auditions and bootcamp. There she formed One Direction, picking out the boys and insisting alongside the other judges that together they would be a smash. Viewers and producers received her stint well.

The following year she was hired to co-host the first American season of The X Factor with Steve Jones. She then replaced the UK judge Cheryl Cole on the panel during the audition stages, which caused controversy. After she sent the quarter-final result to deadlock, which led to Rachel Crow's elimination, she received backlash and death threats. She mentored the Over 30s, and her last contestant, Josh Krajcik, finished as runner-up. Britney Spears replaced her for the second season.

In June 2012, she was confirmed as the fourth judge for the ninth series of The X Factor UK, replacing Kelly Rowland, at a reported salary of $1.17 million. She mentored the Boys category and chose James Arthur, Rylan Clark-Neal and Jahmene Douglas for the live shows. She became the only judge to have all three of her contestants in the quarter-final. She was also the second judge to have both her remaining acts reach the final two, and Arthur won the series. She returned for the tenth series at a reported $2.3 million.

On the 30th of June 2015, she was crowned winner of the variety show I Can Do That, in which six celebrities perform skills they never knew they had. Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris premiered on NBC on the 15th of September 2015 with her as co-host, but low ratings ended it after one season. Next came Bring the Noise on Sky 1, where she and Tinie Tempah served as team captains under host Ricky Wilson. After three years away, she came back to The X Factor UK for its thirteenth and fourteenth series, replacing Rita Ora. She left before the fifteenth series, when Louis Tomlinson replaced her.

In 2019, she joined The Masked Singer as a panelist, on a show where celebrities sing in costumes that hide their identities. Its premiere was the highest-rated unscripted series debut in the United States since The X Factor USA in 2011. That May, she was named a judge on the ninth season of Australia's Got Talent, replacing Sophie Monk. Between October and December 2019, she also judged the X Factor spin-offs Celebrity and The Band. The third season of The Masked Singer premiered in February 2020 after Super Bowl LIV and drew over 27.3 million viewers, the series' most watched episode. She stayed on its panel through 2023, the year she took on a very different kind of role.

  • In August 2010, Scherzinger played Maureen in Neil Patrick Harris's Hollywood Bowl production of the rock musical Rent. Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times wrote, "Scherzinger's powerhouse voice was meant for venues like the Bowl." In December 2011, she sang "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Royal Variety Performance to mark that musical's 25th anniversary. In 2012 she sang "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" at the Andrew Lloyd Webber: 40 Musical Years tribute show. She also made a brief appearance in Men in Black 3.

Her West End debut came in December 2014, when she played Grizabella in a revival of Cats at the London Palladium. The run lasted 12 weeks, until the 8th of February 2015. Critics gave her rave reviews, particularly for her version of the standard "Memory," and she earned a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber called her recording of "Memory" the "best recording of anything of his music ever done." She was set to play Grizabella again in the Broadway revival, but she quit a week before rehearsals began after the producers refused to give her top billing.

Screen roles kept coming. In November 2016, Disney released Moana, in which she voiced Sina. ABC's television remake of Dirty Dancing premiered on the 24th of May 2017 with her as Penny. The film got negative reviews, but her performance drew praise. She had a voice cameo in Ralph Breaks the Internet in 2018. On the 10th of June 2021, Netflix premiered the anime series Trese, in which she voiced Miranda Trese. On the 2nd of December 2021, she played Grace Farrell in the NBC special Annie Live! A sequel, Moana 2, followed in 2024.

On the 7th of May 2023, she performed "Reflection," from Disney's 1998 film Mulan, at the Coronation Concert celebrating the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla the day before. She was accompanied by the Chinese pianist Lang Lang. That same year she teamed with the Japanese rock star Yoshiki on "I'll Be Your Love" for the documentary Yoshiki: Under the Sky.

Then came the role that changed her standing. In 2023, she starred as Norma Desmond in a revival of Sunset Boulevard at the Savoy Theatre in the West End. Matt Wolf of The New York Times called her performance "career-defining," writing, "Scherzinger finds a predatory allure in the character that is both captivating and chilling." She won the 2023 Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical Performance and the 2024 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. In 2024, she made her Broadway debut in the same role when the production transferred to the St. James Theatre. That run brought her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2025. On the 16th of June 2024, she performed "What I Did for Love" from A Chorus Line during the in memoriam segment of the 77th Tony Awards.

A film adaptation of Sunset Boulevard has been in development since 2019, and she has been in talks to reprise Norma Desmond on screen.

  • Whitney Houston's "The Greatest Love of All" was the song that first made Scherzinger want to make music. She has named Houston her idol and biggest influence and says she wanted to be "Whitney Houston growing up." Of Houston's voice she said, "she filled the universe with her voice." She also listened to Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Roberta Flack, Sade, Alanis Morissette and Tina Turner. Growing up, she listened to Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals including Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Evita. After Prince died in April 2016, she called him a "mentor" and an "inspiration." On stage she borrows from Tina Turner and Mick Jagger, saying of Turner, "I steal from her all the time." Inspired by Jennifer Lopez, she dyed her hair blonde in her twenties, with results she describes as disastrous.

Critics have split over her voice, which is a soprano. Adam White of The Daily Telegraph called her "an incredible vocalist" but said the voice lacks a distinctive character. Michael Cragg of The Observer wrote that her voice was used as "a blank canvas." Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic said she sings "with the finesse of a demo singer." He also called her "the least distinctive diva of the new millennium." Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian found her singing "powerful and true," though more evident live than on record. Scherzinger picks songs that suit live performance, and Sullivan wrote that she was "able to out-dance her four dancers." Readers of Rolling Stone voted her their ninth Favorite Dancing Musician. She says her provocative stage persona "comes from a strong place, not a weak place."

Adam White also described her career as "a perfect case study in all the right ingredients not automatically producing a great result." He said she found more success as a reality television judge and product spokesperson than as a pop star. Nick Duerden of The Independent called her the "ultimate modern celebrity." He argued she lacks the edge or flair of some rivals, but that her "drive, passion, and unstinting commitment to succeed" set her apart.

In late 2012, Scherzinger spoke openly about bulimia, which she said took hold at the height of the Dolls' fame. Body dysmorphia before an early photo shoot with the group triggered the behavior, which lasted nearly a decade. She overcame it with help from therapists and life coaches, and Big Fat Lie addressed that struggle. She considers herself shy and declines to discuss her relationships in interviews. "My music is the only place I'm open about it," she says.

Her business ventures began in April 2010 with a collection of lingerie, shoes, handbags and jewelry for the retailer C&A in Brazilian stores. A March 2014 collaboration with Missguided, a 30-piece range, helped the retailer increase profit by 70%. In September 2017, she launched a fragrance, Chosen by Nicole Scherzinger. In 2022 she announced Nalu, an interior design range including bedding, licensed through the manufacturer Bedeck. She served as the first non-British godmother for P&O Cruises, christening the ship Arvia on the 16th of March 2023.

Her charity work began with the 2010 Haiti earthquake, when she appeared on the charity single "We Are the World 25 for Haiti" and took part in the Hope for Haiti Now telethon. Inspired by an aunt with Down syndrome, she became a global ambassador for the Special Olympics and recorded "O Holy Night" for A Very Special Christmas, released in 2013. Since 2014 she has supported UNICEF UK and traveled to Guyana, Manila in the Philippines, and Kenya to visit centers helping children in poverty. In August 2019, she joined protests against the building of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea, a site Native Hawaiians consider holy.
