New York Giants
The New York Giants were born on the 1st of August 1925, when Timothy Mara and Will Gibson paid $2,500 for a franchise in a professional football league most Americans did not take seriously. At the time, boxing, baseball, and college football ruled the sports landscape. Pro football was considered a lesser thing. That skepticism would not last long.
The Giants played their first NFL game on the 11th of October 1925, and lost 14-0 to the Providence Steam Roller. Yet by the third season, they had the best record in the league. A hundred years later, the organization stands as the longest-established NFL team in the Northeastern United States, with eight league championships and 19 title game appearances. No other franchise has appeared in more championship games.
But the story of the New York Giants is not simply a victory march. It includes a fumble that changed a rivalry, a championship game played in sneakers, a catch made on a helmet, a feud between owners that nearly tore the franchise apart, and some of the most painful collapses in NFL history. The questions worth asking are not just how they won, but how they survived the decades when they could not.
In December 1930, the Giants hosted a team of Notre Dame All Stars at the Polo Grounds in a fundraising match for the unemployed of New York City. The game raised $100,000 for the homeless. More than the money, the result shifted perception of professional football.
Knute Rockne, the legendary Notre Dame coach, reassembled his famous Four Horsemen and the stars of his 1924 championship squad. He told his players to score early and then defend. He expected an easy win. Instead, Benny Friedman ran for two Giant touchdowns, Hap Moran passed for another, and Notre Dame failed to score at all. Rockne walked off the field and told his team: "That was the greatest football machine I ever saw. I am glad none of you got hurt."
The game is often credited with establishing the legitimacy of the professional game for those who had dismissed it. It was also the final game Rockne ever coached. He was killed in an airplane crash on the 31st of March 1931.
Tim Mara had acquired that franchise for $2,500 in a league barely five years old. The Giants struggled financially in their first season until the 11th game, when Red Grange and the Chicago Bears came to town and drew more than 73,000 fans. That influx of revenue may have saved the franchise. A rival league formed by Grange and his agent the following year cost the Giants $50,000 before the rival league folded and was absorbed into the NFL. Mara transferred ownership to his two sons following the 1930 season to insulate the team from creditors, and by 1946 he had given them complete control.
Steve Owen coached the Giants for more than two decades starting in 1931, and in a 16-year span the team qualified for the NFL championship game eight times. They won it twice under his watch, but one of those victories is remembered less for the score than for what the players wore on their feet.
The 1934 NFL Championship Game against the Chicago Bears was played on an icy field. The Giants switched to sneakers for better traction and defeated the Bears 30-13. The game has been called the "Sneakers Game" ever since. The victory was one of the franchise's most celebrated, and Owen himself is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Giants captured another championship in 1938 with a 23-17 win over the Green Bay Packers. The 1944 team, though it lost the championship game 14-7 to Green Bay, is ranked the top defensive unit in NFL history. That team gave up only 7.5 points per game, a record that still stands, and shut out five of their ten opponents.
A lesser-known game from this period: on the 7th of November 1943, the Giants played the Detroit Lions to a scoreless tie. No NFL game played since that date has ended without either team scoring.
Jim Lee Howell became head coach in 1954 and brought a remarkable staff with him. His offensive coordinator was Vince Lombardi. His defensive coordinator was Tom Landry. Both would go on to become legendary head coaches elsewhere, and both are now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Howell coached the Giants to their 1956 championship, their first year playing at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
From 1958 to 1963, the Giants made it to the NFL Championship Game five times without winning any of them. The 1958 game against the Baltimore Colts is known as "The Greatest Game Ever Played." The Giants lost in overtime, 23-17. The game is considered one of the most significant events in expanding the NFL's popularity. The following year, the Giants gave up a 9-7 fourth-quarter lead and lost to the Colts again, 31-16.
In 1963, quarterback Y.A. Tittle threw a then-NFL record 36 touchdown passes and won the league MVP award. The Giants went to the championship game and lost to the Chicago Bears 14-10. It was their fifth title game loss in six years. With Tittle and Frank Gifford approaching their mid-30s, the team finished 2-10-2 the following season, beginning a 15-year stretch with only two winning seasons and no playoff appearances.
The 1966 team allowed more than 500 points on defense and finished 1-12-1, the worst record in the league.
The low point of the Giants' lean years came on a single play in 1978. With the team about to secure a win against the Philadelphia Eagles, offensive coordinator Bob Gibson called a running play to run out the clock. Quarterback Joe Pisarcik fumbled. Eagles player Herman Edwards returned it for a game-winning touchdown. The play became known simply as "The Fumble" and the moment is still cited as a defining incident in the Giants-Eagles rivalry, which dates back to 1933 and is the oldest in the NFC East.
Off the field, the team was divided by a long-running feud between co-owner Wellington Mara and his nephew Tim Mara. Jack Mara had died in 1965, leaving his shares to his son Tim. Wellington and Tim's personal styles clashed, their visions for the franchise diverged, and eventually they stopped speaking to one another. NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle had to intervene, recommending a neutral general manager named George Young to keep the club functioning.
Young's hire in 1979 proved transformative. That same year, the Giants drafted quarterback Phil Simms. In 1981 they drafted linebacker Lawrence Taylor, who won both the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards in his first season and helped the Giants reach the playoffs for the first time since 1963. The feud between Wellington and Tim Mara became moot on the 20th of February 1991, when Tim sold his shares to Preston Robert Tisch for a reported $80 million.
Bill Parcells became head coach in 1983 and almost immediately made a decision he later called a mistake. He demoted Phil Simms all the way to third string, promoted Scott Brunner as starter, and the team went 3-12-1. Parcells said he "nearly paid for dearly." The Giants released Brunner in the off-season, named Simms the starter, and the team rebounded to nine wins and a playoff appearance.
The 1986 season produced the Giants' finest modern run. They finished 14-2, a record that still stands as their best since the NFL expanded to 16-game seasons in 1978. Lawrence Taylor won both the league MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards. The defense became known as the Big Blue Wrecking Crew. In Super Bowl XXI at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Simms completed 22 of 25 passes for an 88% completion rate, a Super Bowl record. The Giants won 39-20 over the Denver Broncos, their first championship since 1956.
The 1988 season was complicated by a scandal involving Taylor, who was suspended for the first four games after a second violation of the league's substance-abuse policy. He returned and recorded 15.5 sacks, but the team missed the playoffs in their final regular-season game. In 1989, they went 12-4 before losing to the Los Angeles Rams in overtime when Flipper Anderson caught a 47-yard touchdown pass.
The 1990 team won 13 regular-season games and at the time set an NFL record for fewest turnovers in a season with 14. They defeated the San Francisco 49ers 15-13 on the road in the NFC Championship, ending the 49ers' attempt at a third straight Super Bowl title. In Super Bowl XXV against the Buffalo Bills, running back Ahmad Bradshaw scored the winning touchdown despite Eli Manning's instructions not to score. His momentum carried him into the end zone at the 1-yard line. The Giants won 20-19.
Tom Coughlin took over as head coach in 2004, and the Giants traded for University of Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning on draft day that same year. Manning became the starter midway through his first season, and the team went through several modest seasons before building toward something remarkable.
In 2007, the Giants became the third NFL franchise to win 600 games when they defeated the Atlanta Falcons 31-10 on Monday Night Football. They also played the first NFL regular-season game outside North America that October, defeating the Miami Dolphins 13-10 at Wembley Stadium in London. They finished 10-6 and entered the playoffs as a wild card.
The New England Patriots entered Super Bowl XLII with an 18-0 record and were favored by 12 points. What followed produced one of the most discussed plays in NFL history. Manning escaped the grasp of multiple Patriots defensive linemen, stepped up in the pocket, and threw the ball downfield to a double-covered David Tyree. With Patriots defensive back Rodney Harrison draped over him, Tyree held the ball against his helmet until he hit the ground. The catch set up a Manning touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress. The Giants won 17-14. Co-owner John Mara described it as "the greatest victory in the history of this franchise, without question."
New York City threw a ticker-tape parade on the 5th of February 2008, under mayor Michael Bloomberg at the Canyon of Heroes in lower Manhattan. Four years later, a second parade followed on the 7th of February 2012, after the Giants defeated the Patriots again in Super Bowl XLVI by a score of 21-17, with Manning again named Super Bowl MVP.
Wellington Mara had been with the Giants since 1925, when he worked as a ball boy at his father's newly purchased franchise. He died in 2005 at the age of 89. His death was followed two weeks later by the death of co-owner Bob Tisch. In 2015, Wellington's widow Ann died at age 85 due to complications from a head injury suffered in a fall. The team is now owned by John Mara and Steve Tisch.
Forbes estimated the team's value at $1.3 billion in 2012. In September 2025, Julia Koch and her family agreed to acquire a 10% minority stake in the franchise, with that deal valuing the Giants at over $10 billion.
The Giants boast the second-most Pro Football Hall of Fame members of any franchise, with 29. Ray Flaherty's retired number 1 holds another distinction: it was the first number retired in professional football. In 2024, the Flaherty family gave permission for rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers to wear it, making Nabers the exception to a restriction nearly 90 years old.
Since 2011, the team has had only three winning seasons: 2012, 2016, and 2022. As of 2025, the Giants hold the longest active division title drought in the NFC, at 14 seasons. Head coach Brian Daboll was fired on November 10th of that year, and on the 17th of January 2026, the Giants hired John Harbaugh, the longtime coach of the Baltimore Ravens, on a reported five-year deal worth over $20 million annually. Harbaugh inherits a franchise with more championship game appearances than any team in NFL history, and a waiting list for season tickets that has been estimated at 135,000 people.
