  • The Buffalo Bills began competitive play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. Head coach Buster Ramsey led the team through its first two seasons, which ended with records of 5, 8, 1 and 6, 8. The franchise drew much of its early fanbase from western New York and neighboring southern Ontario. Ralph Wilson founded the team after his time as a minority owner of the Detroit Lions. He had previously been involved with earlier non-NFL teams in the city, including the Bisons of the All-America Football Conference that folded in 1929. The Bills won two consecutive American Football League titles in 1964 and 1965 under quarterback Jack Kemp and coach Lou Saban. These victories remain the only major professional sports championships for a team representing Buffalo. The club struggled heavily in the latter years of the AFL and for much of its first two decades in the NFL. From 1967 to 1987, the team tallied only five winning seasons and three postseason berths.

  • From 1990 to 1993, the Buffalo Bills appeared in four consecutive Super Bowls under head coach Marv Levy. They lost each one, setting records in both categories that still stand today. The team rebuilt into a perennial contender in the late 1980s through the mid-1990s using highly drafted players like Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, and Darryl Talley. Jim Kelly initially played for the USFL before joining the Bills. The franchise won four consecutive AFC Championships during this period but failed to win any subsequent Super Bowl. Their four Super Bowl appearances are the most among NFL franchises that have not won the title, a record they share with the Minnesota Vikings. The rise of division rival New England Patriots under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady helped prevent the Bills from reaching the playoffs again until 2017. The collapse of the United States Football League allowed the Bills to acquire key talent needed for their historic run.

  • The Bills endured the longest playoff drought in the four major North American professional sports from 2000 to 2016. This seventeen-year span made them the last franchise in the four leagues to qualify for the postseason in the 21st century. Mike Mularkey coached the team in 2004 and 2005 seasons, going 9, 7 but missing the postseason both years. He resigned after the 2005 season following a 5, 11 record. Dick Jauron served as head coach from 2006 to 2009, finishing three consecutive 7, 9 seasons before being dismissed after a 3, 6 start to his fourth year. Chan Gailey coached from 2010 to 2012, firing after three consecutive last place finishes in the AFC East. Doug Marrone was hired before the 2013 season, improving the record to 9, 7 in 2014 before stepping down. Rex Ryan took over before the 2015 season, leading an 8, 8 team that finished 7, 9 in 2016. The drought ended when Sean McDermott broke it by appearing in the playoffs for seven of the next eight seasons.

  • Under head coach Sean McDermott, the Bills returned to consistent contention starting in the late 2010s. They drafted Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen with the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. The team earned its first division championship and playoff wins since 1995 during the 2020 season. Their run ended with a 38, 24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. In 2021, they defeated the Patriots 47, 17 in the Wild Card Round before falling to the Chiefs 42, 36 in overtime. This victory marked the only perfect offensive game in NFL history, scoring a touchdown on every drive. The Bills won the AFC East four consecutive times from 2020 to 2024. A rivalry developed between Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, particularly in postseason matchups. Four high-profile games occurred between 2019 and 2024, including controversial overtime rules in the 2021 Divisional round. The series saw Mahomes lead 4, 0 in playoffs while Allen leads 5, 1 in regular seasons.

  • For their first two seasons, the Bills wore uniforms based on those of the Detroit Lions at the time. Ralph Wilson had been a minority owner of the Lions before founding the Bills. The original colors were Honolulu blue, silver, and white, with silver helmets displaying no striping or logo. In 1962, the standing red bison became the official logo placed on a white helmet. That same year, team colors changed to red, white, and blue. Blue jerseys with red and white shoulder stripes replaced earlier designs. By 1965, red and blue center stripes appeared on helmets. The team introduced blue pants worn with white jerseys in 1973, the last year of the standing buffalo helmet. The face mask was blue from 1974 through 1986 before changing to white. A charging blue bison with a red slanting stripe streaming from its horn replaced the standing logo in 1974. Aerospace designer Stevens Wright created this new emblem that remains the primary one used by the franchise today.

  • The franchise is owned by Terry Pegula, who purchased the Bills after the death of original owner Ralph Wilson in 2014. A coalition of private equity funds and investors purchased a minority stake in the team in December 2024. Twenty point six percent of the team interest sold at a valuation of $5.6 billion, including 10% to American investment group Arctos Partners LP. Kim Pegula transferred part of her stake to stepdaughter Laura after being incapacitated by a 2022 vascular brain injury. Former Toronto athletes Jozy Altidore, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady joined the investor group. The Bills announced plans to build a new stadium to replace Highmark Stadium to be ready by 2026. McDermott was fired two days after the season ended following nine seasons as head coach. The team has had twenty coaches serve as head coach in franchise history since its founding in 1959.
