Marilyn Manson is the stage name of Brian Hugh Warner, an American rock singer whose band has sold over 50 million records worldwide. Few musicians have been argued over in so many rooms. Politicians condemned his lyrics, critics fought about whether his art was sincere, and courts have kept returning to his name. Yet the story begins with a student journalist in Florida who interviewed other musicians for a small magazine. How does a college reporter become one of the most contested figures in heavy metal? What did he actually put on record, and what did he say back to his critics? And what happened when accusations of a very different kind surfaced in 2021?
Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson sit side by side in the stage name, and the pairing was deliberate. Monroe, an actress, ranked among the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and remained a major icon more than fifty years later. Manson led a cult and was responsible for the murder of actress Sharon Tate and several others. He served a life sentence until his death in 2017. Band members originally built their stage names the same way, pairing a sex symbol's first name with a serial killer's surname.
At the 2015 Cannes Lions Festival, Warner said he had trademarked the name the way Walt Disney protected Mickey Mouse. He added that it was neither a stage name nor his legal name, and that Brian Warner owned it. He made the same point to Larry King in 2013. Records of the United States Patent and Trademark Office show four registrations between 1994 and 1999, covering entertainment services, merchandising and branding.
Warner says he used those registrations to send cease and desist orders to media outlets that blamed him for the Columbine High School massacre. One journalist had reported that the shooters were "wearing Marilyn Manson makeup and t-shirts", a claim that was soon proved wrong. Warner recalled the moment this way: "Once the wheels started spinning, Fox News started going." His career suffered badly. Many venue owners shunned him, and he received numerous death threats. His father had called him simply Manson since about 1993, explaining, "It's called respect of the artist." His mother kept calling him Brian.
Anton LaVey appears in Manson's own account of his beliefs. Manson claims LaVey was a friend, and he once said LaVey inducted him as a minister in the Church of Satan. Later he played that down, saying he was "not necessarily" a minister. The Church of Satan itself says he was never ordained, but was given an honorary priesthood for his accomplishments at the time. One description called him "the highest profile Satanist ever", with strong anti-Christian views and social Darwinist leanings. Manson rejects the labels of misanthrope, nihilist and atheist. "You can't try to change the world, you can just try to make something in it," he said. He also knows the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and Aleister Crowley, and quotes the Thelema dictum "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law" in his autobiography. Crowley's esoteric subject matter became an important theme in much of his early work.
Canton, Ohio, is where Warner was born on the 5th of January 1969, to Barbara J. Wyer and Hugh Angus Warner. His mother took him to her Episcopal church, though his father was Catholic. He attended Heritage Christian School from first grade through tenth. There, teachers tried to show pupils which music to avoid, and the lesson backfired. He fell in love with exactly what he "wasn't supposed to". He later moved to GlenOak High School and graduated in 1987.
Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, enrolled him in 1990, after his family relocated. He worked toward a journalism degree and wrote articles for the music magazine 25th Parallel. Interviews put him in front of Groovie Mann of My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. His own work would later be compared to theirs. Reznor became his mentor and produced his debut album.
A band had already formed in 1989, when Warner teamed up with guitarist Scott Putesky. Warner wrote the lyrics and Putesky composed most of the music. In 1990 the group recorded its first demo tape as Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, with a revolving lineup of musicians around them. Their live shows were designed to shock. Members often wore women's clothing or bizarre costumes, and the stage featured amateur pyrotechnics, naked women nailed to crucifixes, children locked in cages and butchered animal remains. The South Florida punk and hardcore scene responded with loyalty. Within six months of forming, the band was playing sold-out shows in nightclubs that held 300 people.
Sony Music offered a record deal in early 1991, but rescinded it before any material was recorded for the label. The band used the money from that deal to pay for later demo tapes, which it released independently. Side projects helped with a different problem. Satan on Fire was a faux-Christian metal ensemble in which Warner played bass. Mrs. Scabtree, with Jeordie White and Jessicka of Jack Off Jill, had Warner on drums. Both let him get around contracts that barred Marilyn Manson from playing certain clubs. The name was shortened to Marilyn Manson in 1992, and in the summer of 1993 Reznor signed the act to his vanity label, Nothing Records.
July 1994 brought the band's debut studio album, Portrait of an American Family. Manson later complained that Nothing Records and its parent label Interscope had not promoted it enough. While the band recorded b-sides and remixes for a planned third single, "Dope Hat", it decided to release that material on its own as Smells Like Children. The record included a cover of the Eurythmics song "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", which made the band a mainstream act. MTV put the video on heavy rotation, and it earned a first nomination for Best Rock Video at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards.
Antichrist Superstar followed in 1996 and set off a fierce backlash among Christian fundamentalists. It also sold. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and reached almost 2 million copies in the United States and 7 million worldwide. The single "The Beautiful People" earned three nominations at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, where the band performed.
David Bowie was the model for the look of Mechanical Animals in 1998. Manson drew on 1970s glam rock and copied Bowie's wardrobe and hairstyle, partly to escape the role of "boogeyman" that the mainstream media had handed him. Interscope promoted the album heavily, with huge billboards of Manson as an androgynous extraterrestrial in Times Square and on the Sunset Strip. "The Dope Show" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 yet became the lowest-selling number-one album of 1998 in the United States, at 1.4 million copies as of 2017. Longtime fans complained about the radio-friendly sound and accused him of "selling out".
Industrial metal returned with Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) in 2000. Numerous publications called it the band's finest work, and it went gold in the United States. The mainstream press still questioned the band's commercial appeal, pointing to the dominance of nu metal and artists such as Eminem. A cover of "Tainted Love" in 2002 became an international hit and reached number one in several territories.
Berlin in the 1920s inspired The Golden Age of Grotesque, released in 2003, with its swing and burlesque influences. Manson compared his own criticized work to the Entartete Kunst, the art banned by the Nazi regime. The album opened at number one on the Billboard 200 but sold only 527,000 copies in the United States as of 2008. Europe responded more warmly, with more than 400,000 sold in its first week. French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier created much of the elaborate clothing for the Grotesk Burlesk Tour.
Three years of hiatus ended in 2007 with Eat Me, Drink Me, whose lyrics largely concerned the end of Manson's marriage to Dita Von Teese. The High End of Low arrived in 2009 as the last album on Interscope. Manson made disparaging remarks about the label and its president, Jimmy Iovine, while promoting it. Cooking Vinyl signed him in 2011 on a deal that split profits equally once the label recovered its costs. Born Villain came out in 2012, and "No Reflection" earned the band a fourth Grammy nomination. Loma Vista Recordings handled later American releases, beginning with The Pale Emperor in 2015, widely seen as a return to form.
Hammerstein Ballroom in New York was the setting for an injury during the tour for Heaven Upside Down in 2017. Two large falling stage props struck Manson and broke his fibula in two places. Surgeons inserted a plate and ten screws in the bone, plus another screw in an ankle he had sprained at a show in Pittsburgh. "God's Gonna Cut You Down" came out as a single in 2019. We Are Chaos in 2020 became the band's tenth top-ten release on the Billboard 200. In March 2024 Manson announced a North American tour with Five Finger Death Punch, and the band released "As Sick as the Secrets Within" as its first new single in four years. "Raise the Red Flag" followed two weeks later, and Bill Yukich directed both videos.
Nielsen SoundScan counted 8.7 million albums sold in the United States as of 2011. Three albums are certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and three more gold. Two reached number one on the Billboard 200. Sales in the United Kingdom come to almost 2 million. Through all of it, Manson kept working with other musicians, from Billy Corgan to Eminem.
Three octaves is the span of Manson's baritone. His lowest note, an A1, appears on one album track, and his highest, an E6 at the start of the whistle register, is on "Hey, Cruel World..." from Born Villain. He mixes melodic singing with vocal fry, screaming, growling and crooning. He once claimed his voice has five different tones, and mixing engineer Robert Carranza found they form a pentagram in a phrasal analyzer.
David Lynch's Lost Highway in 1997 gave Manson his film debut. Small parts and cameos followed, including Jawbreaker in 1999, a film made by his then-girlfriend Rose McGowan. In 2013 he played himself on Californication. He also played white supremacist Ron Tully on Sons of Anarchy and the barber-surgeon Thomas Dinley on Salem. On Once Upon a Time he voiced a character called Shadow. In animation he appeared in Clone High and became the unofficial champion and mascot of MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch. Michael Moore interviewed him for Bowling for Columbine in 2002. Johnny Depp reportedly used him as inspiration for Willy Wonka.
In July 2005 Manson told Rolling Stone he was shifting from music to filmmaking. He said, "I just don't think the world is worth putting music into right now." His directing debut was Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll, in which he was also set to play Carroll. The film had an estimated budget of $4.2 million and a slated release in mid-2007. In 2010 studio bosses reportedly shut it down, apparently over reactions to violent clips posted online. Manson said in 2013 that he had resurrected it with Roger Avary directing. In an April 2015 Reddit session with Billy Corgan, he said he had withdrawn because the writing was "so... damaging to my psyche, I've decided I don't want to have anything to do with it".
A 2004 interview with i-D magazine is where Manson dated his start as a watercolor painter to 1999. He said he made five-minute concept pieces and sold them to drug dealers. His first show, The Golden Age of Grotesque, ran on the 13th and the 14th of September 2002 at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions Centre. Max Henry of Art in America compared the paintings to the work of a "psychiatric patient given materials to use as therapy". Henry added that their value lay "in their celebrity, not the work". A second show in 2004 opened in Paris and then Berlin, named Trismegistus after its centerpiece, a three-headed Christ painted on an antique wooden panel. Manson also named a self-proclaimed art movement Celebritarian Corporation, with the slogan "We will sell our shadow to those who stand within it." In 2010 he showed 20 paintings titled Genealogies of Pain at the Kunsthalle in Vienna, a project he worked on with David Lynch. That same year an exhibition in Athens was postponed by a volcanic ash cloud and ran from the 28th of April to the 2nd of May.
Mansinthe is the Swiss-made absinthe Manson launched, and it won a gold medal at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Reviews were mixed, with some critics calling the taste just plain. By 2015 he said he no longer drank absinthe.
Andrew Baines, a 16-year-old from Tennessee, was invited into the band's studio in 2002 through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He recorded backing vocals for The Golden Age of Grotesque. Manson has also supported Music for Life, Little Kids Rock and Project Nightlight, as well as Oxfam's 2013 Rumble in the Jumble event. In 2019 he performed with Cyndi Lauper at her Home for the Holidays benefit, which raised money for True Colors United.
On the 30th of May 1996, the political group Empower America held a bipartisan press conference with William Bennett, Joseph Lieberman and C. Delores Tucker. They accused the record industry of selling "prepackaged, shrink-wrapped nihilism". Rap was their main target, but Manson was named too. Tucker called Smells Like Children the "dirtiest, nastiest porno record directed at children that has ever hit the market". Empower America announced a $25,000 radio campaign to gather petitions against "this vicious, vulgar music".
Protesters met the Dead to the World Tour at nearly every North American venue. Opponents claimed the shows included a satanic altar, bestiality, rape, free drugs, homosexual acts, and animal and even human sacrifices. Anonymous affidavits compiled by the American Family Association's Gulf Coast division added more claims. Students in Florida were threatened with expulsion for attending. Empower America held a second press conference in December 1996 to criticize Edgar Bronfman Jr. of MCA, which owned Interscope, for profiting from albums by Manson, Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg.
Utah, South Carolina and Virginia all passed laws specifically barring the band from state-operated venues. Fans and the American Civil Liberties Union sued, and the laws were later repealed. Ozzy Osbourne sued the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority after it canceled the New Jersey date of the 1997 Ozzfest at Giants Stadium, citing Manson's appearance. In November 1997, Lieberman and Sam Brownback led congressional hearings on whether violent lyrics affected young listeners. Raymond Kuntz testified that Antichrist Superstar, and the song "The Reflecting God" in particular, had driven his son to suicide. Lieberman called the band the "sickest group ever promoted by a mainstream record company".
On the 20th of April 1999, Columbine High School students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed thirteen people and wounded twenty-four others before taking their own lives. Early reports blamed Goth subculture and entertainment violence. Five days later, Bennett and Lieberman went on Meet the Press and cited Manson's music as a contributing factor. Headlines such as "Killers Worshipped Rock Freak Manson" appeared. The pair turned out to be fans of German industrial bands such as KMFDM and Rammstein, and had "nothing but contempt" for Manson's music. Most of the blame still landed on him.
Wellington Webb, the Mayor of Denver, successfully petitioned to cancel the KBPI-FM Birthday Bash on the 30th of April, where Manson was due to appear. Webb called the concert "inappropriate". On the 29th of April, ten senators led by Brownback wrote to the head of Seagram, which owned Manson's label. They asked it to stop distributing music that "glorifies violence" to children. Manson canceled the last four dates of the Rock Is Dead Tour out of respect for the victims. He then wrote an op-ed for Rolling Stone, "Columbine: Whose Fault Is It?". It attacked America's gun culture and the influence of the National Rifle Association, but it saved its harshest words for the news media. He argued the media had fueled a "witch hunt" and had picked a scapegoat.
Brownback chaired a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on the 4th of May on how the film, music, television and video-game industries marketed violent material to children. Witnesses included Bennett and Archbishop of Denver Charles J. Chaput. Manson, Nine Inch Nails and the film The Matrix were all criticized. Recording Industry Association of America executive Hilary Rosen refused to attend because the hearing was "staged as political theater. They just wanted to find a way to shame the industry, and I'm not ashamed." The committee asked the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice to investigate how the entertainment industry marketed to minors. Manson answered with Holy Wood.
Italy in 2000 saw an elderly nun murdered by three schoolgirls whose diaries reportedly held many references to Manson. He was arrested after a concert in Rome, which he called politically motivated and linked to Italian tabloids. In 2003 French media blamed him when teenagers vandalized the graves of British war heroes in Arras. Later that year, 14-year-old Jodi Jones was murdered in Scotland. Her boyfriend Luke Mitchell was convicted, and police had confiscated a copy of The Golden Age of Grotesque from his family home. A ten-minute excerpt of the film Doppelherz and several Manson paintings were shown at trial. Lord Nimmo Smith said he believed Mitchell "carried an image of Manson's paintings in his memory when he killed Jodi". Mitchell was sentenced to a minimum of twenty years. Two later school shootings, in Cleveland in 2007 and Lafourche Parish, Louisiana in 2009, kept the association alive in the press. Mitchell continues to profess his innocence.
Scott Putesky filed a $15 million lawsuit in Fort Lauderdale in January 1998, two years after leaving the band. He claimed unpaid royalties, publishing rights and performance fees. He also sued the band's attorney David Codikow for malpractice. By October of that year the case had settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. On the 30th of November 1998, SPIN editor Craig Marks filed a $24 million suit after an alleged assault backstage in Poughkeepsie, New York. Manson countersued, then apologized and offered restitution, and Marks dropped his case. In 2007 former bandmate Stephen Bier sued for $20 million in unpaid partnership proceeds. That suit settled on the 28th of December 2009, with Bier's attorneys receiving a total of $380,000. In September 2023, Manson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge over an incident with a videographer in New Hampshire. He received 20 hours of community service and a $1,400 fine, with $200 suspended.
Rose McGowan was engaged to Manson from February 1999 to January 2001, and she ended it, citing "lifestyle differences". Dita Von Teese became his partner in 2001, and he proposed on the 22nd of March 2004. Film director Alejandro Jodorowsky officiated at the private wedding. She filed for divorce on the 30th of December 2006, and a judgment was entered on the 27th of December 2007. Evan Rachel Wood's relationship with him became public in 2007. He proposed during a Paris performance in January 2010, and the engagement ended later that year. In October 2020 he told Nicolas Cage that he had married privately during the pandemic. His wife was photographer Lindsay Usich, and he is the godfather of Lily-Rose Depp.
On the 1st of February 2021, Wood wrote on Instagram and told Vanity Fair that Manson had been abusive during their relationship a decade earlier. Four other women issued statements the same day. In all, sixteen people made allegations, and five women accused him of sexual assault, although one later recanted. Loma Vista Recordings, Creative Artists and longtime manager Tony Ciulla dropped him, and his scenes in American Gods and Creepshow were removed. He denied the allegations the next day, calling them "horrible distortions of reality" and saying his relationships were consensual. Von Teese and McGowan first voiced support for the accusers but said he had not been abusive to them.
Esmé Bianco sued in April 2021, alleging sexual assault and human trafficking. His team called the claims "untrue, meritless". A federal judge denied his request to dismiss on statute-of-limitations grounds, and the two settled in January 2023 on undisclosed terms. Former assistant Ashley Walters sued in May 2021. Her case was dismissed a year later, reinstated in December 2023 on appeal and dismissed again in December 2025. A Jane Doe suit from May 2021 settled in September 2023, a week before trial. Ashley Morgan Smithline sued in June 2021, and a judge dismissed her case after her lawyer withdrew. In February 2023 she recanted, saying Wood and her associates had pressured her. A second Jane Doe sued in January 2023, naming Nothing Records and Interscope. Substantive parts of that suit were dismissed in July 2024 under New York's Adult Survivors Act.
Manson himself sued Wood and Ashley "Illma" Gore, claiming defamation and alleging forged FBI documents and a swatting call to his home. Anti-SLAPP motions got a portion of the suit dismissed, and he was ordered to pay legal fees of almost $500,000. He discontinued the case in November 2024 and agreed to pay Wood's fees.
George Gascón, the California district attorney, received the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department findings in September 2022 after a 19-month investigation. He called the file "partial" and asked for more evidence. In January 2025 the department concluded its four-year criminal investigation. Gascón's successor Nathan Hochman declined charges, saying "we cannot prove charges of sexual assault beyond a reasonable doubt". He also said the claims fell outside the statute of limitations. The band meanwhile planned its own headline shows in Europe for 2025.
