  • On the 11th of August 1922, ground broke for a stadium that would cost $13 million to build. This sum was massive for the era, especially when compared to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum which cost less than one million dollars in 1923 dollars. The architectural firm Holabird & Roche designed the structure with Neoclassical style features including Doric columns rising above the East and West entrances. The stadium officially opened on the 9th of October 1924 as Grant Park Stadium during the 53rd anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire. A few events had already taken place there including a field day for police officers on September 6 and a high school football game between Louisville Male High School and Austin Community Academy High School on October 4. On November 22, Notre Dame defeated Northwestern University 13, 6 in the first college football game held at the venue. The name changed to Soldier Field on the 11th of November 1925 to honor soldiers who died in World War I. Its formal rededication occurred during the Army, Navy Game on the 27th of November 1926.

  • The Chicago Bears moved into the stadium full-time in 1971 after playing select charity games there since the early 1960s. They previously played home games at Wrigley Field but needed a larger venue due to post-AFL, NFL merger policies requiring capacities of at least 50,000 spectators. On the 19th of September 1971, the Bears played their first home game at Soldier Field defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 17, 15. In 1989, future plans for the stadium were threatened by a proposal called the McDome intended as a domed stadium for the team. This plan was rejected by the Illinois Legislature in 1990. Bears president Michael McCaskey then considered relocation options including properties in Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove Village. He announced a deal with Northwest Indiana developers in 1995 for an entertainment complex named Planet Park that would include a new stadium. The Lake County Council rejected this plan and Mayor Richard M. Daley proposed sharing Comiskey Park with the White Sox instead. A 20-year lease agreement between the Bears and the Chicago Park District was signed on the 27th of February 1987.

  • Demolition began inside the stadium on the 19th of January 2002 following a playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Tailgate fires still burned in trash cans while workers removed 24,000 seats within just 36 hours using Archer Seating Clearinghouse. Foremen Grant Wedding and Mark Wretschko oversaw the removal of old seating before installing new ones. The total funding for the renovation reached $632 million with taxpayers covering $432 million while the Bears and NFL contributed $200 million. Critics like Stanley Tigerman called it a fiasco and Blair Kamin dubbed it the Eyesore on the Lake Shore. Some described the result as if a spaceship had landed on the traditional structure. Despite mixed reviews from preservation groups the project won design excellence awards including one from the American Institute of Architects in 2004. On the 23rd of September 2004 a federal advisory committee recommended delisting the stadium as a National Historic Landmark due to the interior changes. The designation was officially removed on the 17th of February 2006 after a unanimous vote by the committee led by Carol Ahlgren.

  • Over 100,000 spectators attended the 1926 Army, Navy Game which ended in a 21, 21 tie but decided the national championship. An all-time collegiate attendance record of more than 123,000 fans was established on the 26th of November 1927 when Notre Dame beat USC 7, 6. The stadium hosted multiple FIFA World Cup matches during the 1994 tournament with group stage games drawing crowds over 63,000. It also held the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup and several CONCACAF Gold Cup championships including finals in 2007 and 2019. In 2015, the Chicago Blackhawks played against the Pittsburgh Penguins before a sold-out crowd of 62,921 for the NHL Stadium Series. On the 5th of September 2015, Ireland defeated New Zealand 40, 29 in rugby union marking the first time Ireland had beaten the All Blacks in 111 years. During the 2025 MLS season, a crowd of 62,358 set the highest attendance record for a soccer match as the Chicago Fire drew 0, 0 with Inter Miami featuring Lionel Messi.

  • On the 28th of October 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made his only Midwestern speaking appearance at Soldier Field during his re-election campaign. Over 150,000 people attended this address which was the largest crowd he ever spoke to in the Midwest. The stadium hosted the opening ceremonies of the Century of Progress World's Fair on the 27th of May 1933 where Postmaster General James Farley facilitated events. A free-to-the-public jitterbug event scheduled for the 23rd of August 1938 saw estimates ranging from 120,000 to 215,000 attendees flooding the field and disrupting sound systems. Martin Luther King Jr. led a rally here on the 21st of June 1964 attended by up to 75,000 people including Reverend Theodore Hesburgh. On the 10th of July 1966 another Freedom Movement rally drew around 60,000 listeners hearing Dr. King alongside Mahalia Jackson and Stevie Wonder. In 2006, the stadium opened the Gay Games with ceremonies featuring pride support and protest elements.
