Grand Theft Auto Online

8 sections
  • Grand Theft Auto Online went live on the 1st of October 2013 and asked its players to start as nobodies in the state of San Andreas. The state is fictional and based on Southern California. Up to 30 players can share its open world at the same time. Rockstar North developed the game, and Rockstar Games published it as the online component of Grand Theft Auto V. Even so, it was built alongside the single-player story as a separate experience, one meant to keep evolving. That ambition leaves several questions hanging. How does a silent, customisable stranger become a criminal power in a world full of other people? What happens when a game with that ambition stumbles badly in its first days? And how does it still have fresh updates arriving in January 2026?

  • A flight into Los Santos begins every career in Grand Theft Auto Online. Lamar Davis meets the newcomer, hands over a gun and a car, and starts an hour-long tutorial. It covers driving, fighting, the game modes and how progression works. The new character is made from scratch through a genetics-related process, with finer control over clothes and hairstyles. Once created, that character appears on the Switch Wheel beside the single-player trio of Franklin, Michael and Trevor.

Experience points drive everything that follows. Players earn them mostly by finishing activities, and enough of them raises a level. Higher levels open up weapons, clothing, car customisations and advanced pursuits such as parachuting and aircraft. Reaching a level does not make items free. Everything must be bought with in-game currency, which can be earned or purchased with real money. A player can skip a level requirement by joining a game with people of sufficient rank. Anyone who wants peace can switch on Passive Mode, which makes them immune to other players.

Three kinds of set activity sit on top of the open world. There is racing by car, bike, aircraft or boat, there is Deathmatch in teams or free-for-all, and there are objective-based Contact Missions that feel like small single-player jobs. Adversary Mode adds lopsided variations. In Siege Mentality, one team is besieged by another. In Hasta La Vista, truckers chase cyclists, which recalls the truck and motorcycle chase in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Survival sends a team of up to four players against ten waves of enemies. Firefights use lock-on aim and reward stealth.

Rockstar Games Social Club carries over crews first formed in the multiplayer mode of Max Payne 3. A player can create crews and belong to five in total. Each crew has a hierarchy, and a leader can change a member's role. Winning matches earns a crew experience points and a climb up the online leaderboards.

Players can also build their own jobs. A creation tool handles automobile races and deathmatches. For deathmatches, a creator picks the location, the start and spawn points, and the weapon and vehicle drops. For races, the creator sets the location, route, race type and player count, whether in the air, on land or at sea. Every creation must first be tested against computer-controlled players. Published creations are open to everyone, and Rockstar tags the best ones as Rockstar Verified. In December 2025 the tool gained the Rockstar Mission Creator, which lets players add non-player characters and cutscenes to custom missions.

  • The Heists update reached players on the 10th of March 2015, after numerous delays. It added five multi-part missions with large payouts, designed for teams of four. Only the first heist takes just two players. The rush of people logging in caused some technical difficulties at the start.

Five heists share one structure: a chain of setup jobs that leads to a high-profit finale. One player acts as heist leader. That leader must work through the heists in order and cover the upfront costs. In return the leader earns the largest payoff if the finale succeeds, and keeps the saved progress. Crew members face no prerequisites, can join any setup or finale, and are paid a cut for each mission passed. Roles such as driver and gunner are assigned, players are sometimes split apart, and a headset is recommended.

Digital Spy's Liam Martin thought the update encouraged teamwork and what he called "pinpoint coordination". IGN's Ryan McCaffrey found high replay value in the volatile action. Eurogamer's Rich Stanton enjoyed the strategic planning, and the need to think on his feet as scenarios changed. He also noted occasional pacing problems and mid-mission server disconnections.

The Doomsday Heist arrived on the 12th of December 2017 and was longer and more profitable than any of the originals. It is split into three acts, played by two to four people from start to finish. Each act has its own setup missions, and half of them take place in freemode, where other players can sabotage them. The heist also requires a new kind of property, the underground facility.

The Diamond Casino Heist, released on the 12th of December 2019, took a different approach. All setup missions happen in freemode and one player can finish them alone, though the heist itself needs at least two people. Players can hire non-player accomplices, and each takes a bigger or smaller cut depending on skill. To start, a player must buy an arcade. Arcades are mainly fronts for planning and not a profitable business, but they are highly customisable and can be expanded with new arcade games.

The Cayo Perico Heist was first teased in July 2020 as "a new take on heists in an entirely new location". Officially announced in November, it added a new island to the map and became the biggest update the game had seen. Its target is the drug cartel that controls the island. Descriptions called it the "next evolution in Heists gameplay", because it offers more approaches than any earlier heist, including a solo run from start to finish. A military submarine is required for the job. The update arrived on the 15th of December 2020 to largely positive reception.

  • Every week, Grand Theft Auto Online serves up special challenges and events, new Adversary Modes, and discounts on select vehicles and properties. Some updates are seasonal. The Holiday Gifts update of the 24th of December 2013 added Christmas items, discounts and snowfall, and all of it was removed on the 5th of January 2014. The Festive Surprise update of the 18th of December 2014 brought the snow back, along with the ability to buy a third property. On the 31st of October 2024, UFOs appeared over Los Santos for Halloween. They could abduct players and carry them to the Fort Zancudo military base, from which the players had to escape.

Over the years the updates built a ladder of businesses. The Executives and Other Criminals update of the 15th of December 2015 let players form organisations. Further Adventures in Finance and Felony in June 2016 added executive offices and cargo warehouses. The Bikers update of the 4th of October 2016 introduced motorcycle clubs with clubhouses, counterfeit cash factories and weed farms. Missions came from Malc, a character first seen in Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned. The Gunrunning update of the 13th of June 2017 added bunkers and the Mobile Operations Center. Smuggler's Run, on the 29th of August 2017, added hangars and air cargo smuggling.

The After Hours update of the 24th of July 2018 added nightclubs and brought back "Gay" Tony Prince from Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony. Each club has an underground section for smuggling goods made by the player's other businesses. Real-life DJs Solomun, Tale of Us, Dixon and The Black Madonna can be hired to work the floor. The same update introduced the Oppressor Mk II, a hovering motorcycle armed with machine guns, homing missiles and flare countermeasures. It has since gained notoriety in the community for enabling griefing.

The Arena War update of the 11th of December 2018 sent players into demolition derby modes at the Maze Bank Arena. The armoured vehicles were likened to those from Mad Max and Robot Wars. The Diamond Casino & Resort followed on the 23rd of July 2019 with gambling minigames, a customisable penthouse and a new currency of casino chips. In certain regions, including a few US states, the gambling is unavailable because of local laws. Los Santos Tuners, released on the 20th of July 2021, added the LS Car Meet, 17 customisable tuner vehicles and auto shops.

Music has become part of the expansion strategy. A radio station curated by Frank Ocean came with the Doomsday Heist, and the Diamond Casino Heist brought one curated by rappers Danny Brown and Skepta. The Cayo Perico update added the Music Locker nightclub under the casino, featuring Moodymann, Keinemusik and Palms Trax. It also added four radio stations, hosted or compiled by Joy Orbison, Julian Casablancas, Flying Lotus and Gilles Peterson. The Contract in December 2021 added a station curated by Rosalia and Arca, and new tracks by Dr. Dre, Anderson.Paak and Snoop Dogg. Those tracks were later released as singles on the 4th of February 2022.

The A Safehouse in the Hills update arrived on the 10th of December 2025, after Rockstar announced it on the 20th of November. It added purchasable luxury mansions with customisation options, a personal AI assistant, pets and hired security guards. Players who had finished three missions released on the 13th of November received a significant discount. On the 29th of January 2026, three side missions followed, letting players work as firefighters, forklift operators and paperboys.

  • Lamar Davis, played by Slink Johnson, is a friend the player first met on the social networking site Lifeinvader. The story begins in 2013, several months before Grand Theft Auto V, and treats the multiplayer mode as a prequel. Lamar's ambitions drive an early plot, in which the player sabotages rival gangs so Lamar can rise to power. The scheme backfires and causes a falling out within his own gang, and the player helps repair it. In 2021, Lamar introduces the player to Franklin Clinton, played by Shawn Fonteno, who has opened a celebrity solutions agency. Its first client is Dr. Dre, whose stolen phone holds unreleased music. Left out of Franklin's dealings, Lamar starts a cannabis business called LD Organics and uses media attention from a cult-linked stunt to promote it.

Other returning characters recruit the player for bigger jobs. Trevor Philips, played by Steven Ogg, enlists them for a highly profitable drug deal. Lester Crest, played by Jay Klaitz, recruits them for several bank robberies. Years later, a retired Lester is drawn back in by Georgina, the sister of casino owner Tao Cheng. She wants revenge on Texan businessman's nephew Thornton Duggan and the heist humiliates him. In 2025, the player meets Michael De Santa, played by Ned Luke, a former bank robber turned movie producer. He helps fend off mercenaries sent to attack the player's mansion.

Government agencies and corporations supply the villains. Agent 14, played by Ryan Farrell, has the player break a convicted spy out of prison and raid a government-run lab. In 2017, billionaire Avon Hertz and his AI network Cliffford pose as allies, but they secretly want to trigger a nuclear armageddon. The player stops them by raiding a missile base hidden within Mount Chiliad. In 2022, a sworn-in agent investigates soaring gasoline prices and traces them to Mason Duggan, who is using backup drives of Cliffford's AI. In 2025, technology company KnoWay turns its autonomous taxis into a tool for mass surveillance.

The underworld offers its own cast. Martin Madrazo employs the player early on, and in 2020 his son Miguel hires them to steal incriminating files from the notorious dealer Juan "El Rubio" Strickler. A former Russian Navy sailor named Pavel helps with the plan. In 2023, a juggalo troupe called the Fooliganz, led by Dax, pulls the player into a drug distribution ring. The player then discovers that Dr. Isiah Friedlander, a therapist turned pharmaceutical owner, is behind the theft of the group's chemicals. In 2024, a police officer named Vincent Effenburger points the player toward a cartel operating out of a Cluckin' Bell chicken farm. The latest chapter ends in 2025 with the banker Mr. Faber promising to get in touch soon.

  • Grand Theft Auto Online arrived two weeks after Grand Theft Auto V, and the first days went badly. Many players could not connect to the servers or the Social Club web service. Others saw the game freeze while loading early missions. Rockstar released a technical patch on the 5th of October and suspended the microtransaction system as a fail-safe.

Problems persisted into the second week, and some players reported that their characters' progress had vanished. A second patch followed on the 10th of October, and affected players were told not to recreate their avatars. As recompense, Rockstar paid GTA $500,000 of in-game currency to every account connected since launch.

Despite the mess, players kept arriving. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, stated that by February 2014 some 70 percent of Grand Theft Auto V players with Internet access had played Online. The company also said the microtransaction system had become the largest contributor to its digital revenue since launch.

Long loading screens remained a complaint for years. In early 2021, a user known as "t0st" reported finding an unofficial patch that cut loading times by up to 70 percent. Rockstar confirmed that it worked. The studio folded the fix into its March 2021 update, thanked the user, and rewarded them through its Bug Bounty program.

  • The 18th of November 2014 brought Grand Theft Auto Online to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, after its start on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Windows followed on the 14th of April 2015. The older consoles were already running out of room. The Ill-Gotten Gains Part 2 update of the 8th of July 2015 was the last for both, citing hardware limits. In September 2015, Rockstar announced that the older versions would receive no further additional material. Forbes writer Paul Tassi criticised the move, saying Rockstar was "cutting out a lot of potential customers". He added that the re-releases on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One lacked additional material.

In June 2021, Rockstar announced that servers for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions would close on the 16th of December. Microtransactions ended on those platforms on the 15th of September, and Social Club tracking closed on the 16th of September.

A standalone version for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S arrived on the 15th of March 2022. It was free on PlayStation 5 for the first three months. It added graphical improvements, new vehicles and Hao's Special Works, an auto shop where select vehicles can be upgraded for elite driving performance. A feature called Career Builder gives new characters enough in-game currency to set up one of four businesses. For a limited time, players could permanently transfer their progress from the previous generation. Earned money could only move within the same console family. On the 4th of March 2025, everything from this version became available on PC through a free upgrade.

GTA+ launched in March 2022 as a paid monthly subscription for the new consoles. It offers permanent in-game benefits and exclusive items. By September 2023 it also included classic Rockstar titles, among them Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition. The service reached PC with the enhanced version on the 4th of March 2025. In 2023, subscribers received the Vinewood Car Club, a premium vehicle service, and later the Vinewood Garage, which has 100 parking spaces.

  • Destructoid's Chris Carter described a "messy launch" that he felt should have been delayed. IGN's Keza MacDonald called her play sessions "disastrous". Digital Spy's Liam Martin lost his character data and judged that the technical failures dwarfed the anticipation. Some of the same reviewers still found things to admire. VideoGamer's Jon Denton thought the gameplay's "endlessness" made up for its problems. Martin complimented the scope.

Many reviewers criticised the game itself. The character creation system was panned as unintuitive, producing unattractive avatars. MacDonald thought the "addictive rhythm" eventually faltered as errands turned monotonous. GameSpot's Carolyn Petit found the early missions marred by "bland last team standing deathmatches". Eurogamer's Rich Stanton found cooperative play repetitive. GameSpot's Mark Walton called player-versus-player combat an "unending cycle of pointless slaughter". He considered the reputation system a weak deterrent against foul play, and thought low payouts hindered an unbalanced economy.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One re-release drew similar reactions. IGN's Dan Stapleton reported low player counts, long lobby waits, server disconnections and occasional crashes. VideoGamer.com found progression more streamlined and balanced, though it noted frequent disconnections during load screens. Game Informer's Andrew Reiner reported minimal lag in the expanded firefights and races.

Reception warmed over time. VG247's Patrick Garratt felt the San Andreas Flight School update of the 19th of August 2014 drew players toward neglected aircraft missions with more generous rewards. The game won Best Multiplayer at the 10th British Academy Games Awards and from GameTrailers. Game Revolution and Hardcore Gamer nominated it for Biggest Disappointment. At the 2019 Golden Joystick Awards, it was nominated for Still Playing and won Best Game Expansion for The Diamond Casino & Resort.
