Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell's first audition came in 1992, for a suburban Detroit production of Raggedy Ann and Andy. She won two parts at once: a banana and a tree.
Nobody could have guessed from that start where she would end up. Bell became an American actress and singer who works across film and television, with nominations for three Golden Globe Awards. In 2025, Time listed her among the 100 most influential people in the world.
How does a child cast as fruit and foliage become a teenage detective, an unseen narrator and a Disney princess? Why did her first great role end in cancelation, only for fans to fund its return? And what does she do when the cameras stop?
Huntington Woods, a suburb of Detroit, is where Kristen Anne Bell was born on the 18th of July 1980. Her mother, Lorelei Jo, was a registered nurse. Her father, Thomas Michael Bell, known as Tom, was a television news director. Her parents divorced when she was six months old, and both later remarried. That gave her two half-sisters from her father's second marriage and four step-siblings from her mother's. Bell has described her mother as "very religious," and she has said this strained their relationship.
At the age of four, Bell announced that she disliked her first name. Her mother encouraged her to go by her middle name, Anne, and she kept using it until high school. Just before her first year of high school, her parents removed her from the public school system. She enrolled at Shrine Catholic High School in nearby Royal Oak, where she joined the drama and music clubs.
Fiddler on the Roof in 1995 and Lady, Be Good in 1996 were among her school stage credits. In 1997 she won the starring role of Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz. In 1998 she appeared in Li'l Abner and graduated. Her senior class voted her the yearbook's "Best Looking Lil' Lady."
Before she turned 13, her mother had already placed her with an agent. That led to newspaper advertisements for several Detroit retailers and to television commercials, and Bell began private acting lessons. In 1998 she also took an uncredited part in the film Polish Wedding.
Shortly after high school, Bell moved to Manhattan to study musical theater at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. She left about six credits short of a degree to take a role in a Broadway musical. She told iVillage, "You get to the point where you don't need a degree to be an actor."
In 2001 she made her Broadway debut as Becky Thatcher in the short-lived musical The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Her credited film debut that year was Pootie Tang. Her single line of dialogue was cut, so she appears only during the credits. In 2002 she joined a Broadway revival of The Crucible alongside Liam Neeson, Angela Bettis and Laura Linney.
Los Angeles beckoned in 2002 because of her friendship with the writers Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney. Guest spots followed, but a recurring television role stayed out of reach. Bell recalled that she "tested like eight times and booked nothing and every show she tested for got picked up." Her appearance in the season opener of The Shield aired on the 7th of January 2003. She also played a cheerleader in the second episode of Everwood's second season. She co-starred in the film The King and Queen of Moonlight Bay as Alison, a 17-year-old who travels to Arizona to reconnect with the father who abandoned her family.
At 24, she would land the part that finally broke the cycle of auditions that went nowhere.
Gracie's Choice, a 2004 Lifetime television film, brought Bell acclaim and drew one of the network's highest ratings. That year she also made her debut in a theatrically released film, David Mamet's action thriller Spartan. She played Laura Newton, the kidnapped daughter of the U.S. president, opposite Val Kilmer. She also guest-starred on the HBO period drama Deadwood in a two-episode story arc.
Veronica Mars launched on UPN in the fall of 2004, created by Rob Thomas. Bell played the title character, a seventeen-year-old anti-establishment high school student who works as a private detective. She drew on parallels with her own life, since her parents had divorced and her best friend had also died. Critics praised the series. Bell won the Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television and was nominated for a TCA Award for Individual Achievement in Drama. Some critics argued that her performance was overlooked and deserved Emmy consideration.
While the show ran, Bell kept busy elsewhere. Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical debuted on Showtime on the 16th of April 2005. It spoofed the 1936 exploitation film Reefer Madness, and she reprised a role from a short-lived 2001 Off-Broadway musical. Pulse, released on the 11th of August 2006, cast her as the lead, Mattie, in a remake of the Japanese horror film Kairo. It grossed US$27.9 million worldwide but drew a negative response from critics. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that she had far less interesting material there than she did as Veronica Mars.
The third season moved the show to the newly created CW. On the 19th of January 2007, CW Entertainment President Dawn Ostroff said she was pleased with the gradual improvement in ratings. She also said the series would pause after February sweeps to make room for a reality show, Pussycat Dolls Present. On the 17th of May 2007 Ostroff announced the cancelation. A two-hour finale aired in the United States on the 22nd of May 2007.
On the 13th of March 2013, a Veronica Mars film was confirmed. Bell and Thomas launched a Kickstarter campaign and reached the $2 million goal in less than ten hours. The main cast returned, and production took place in the summer of 2013. The film reached theaters and video-on-demand on the 14th of March 2014. On the 20th of September 2018, Hulu confirmed an eight-episode fourth season, due in July 2019.
After the cancelation, Bell publicly voiced a wish to join another show she loved, the superhero drama Heroes.
On the 29th of July 2007, a train carried Bell back to Los Angeles from San Diego Comic-Con. Heroes actors Zachary Quinto and Masi Oka rode with her, along with several writers from the series. The writers told her to call if she ever wanted to join the show, and she said she would love to.
She turned down the role of Charlotte Staples Lewis on Lost. On Heroes she took Elle Bishop, a "mysterious young lady" with an "awesome power." She did not have to audition. Elle first appeared in an October 2007 episode, and Bell played her in twelve episodes. Creator Tim Kring said the casting "was not easy to pull off," but the show "found a way to jump into a small window in Bell's schedule."
Forgetting Sarah Marshall took her to Hawaii to film the title role in a Judd Apatow comedy, written by and also starring Jason Segel. She called its improvisational comedy "a lovely experience." The film opened on the 18th of April 2008 and greatly raised her profile. She returned as Sarah Marshall in a cameo in Get Him to the Greek, released on the 4th of June 2010.
Fanboys, a Star Wars-themed comedy, had finished filming in the spring of 2006. Director Kyle Newman raised extra money for new scenes, but the actors' busy schedules allowed shooting only in September 2007. The release slipped to the 14th of January 2008.
Mark Steven Johnson wrote the Disney film When in Rome, and shooting began on the 31st of March 2008 in Rome and New York. It came out in 2010. In 2009 she starred in Couples Retreat, which follows four couples attending therapy sessions at a tropical island resort. Jason Bateman played her husband. In November 2010 she co-starred with Christina Aguilera and Cher in the backstage musical Burlesque.
Her cameo in Scream 4, alongside Anna Paquin, reached theaters on the 15th of April 2011.
House of Lies premiered on Showtime on the 8th of January 2012, with Bell as Jeannie van der Hooven, the female lead. The series ended on the 12th of June 2016. In 2013 she also played Ingrid de Forest, an Eagleton City Councilwoman, across several episodes of Parks and Recreation.
Bad Moms in 2016 cast her as Kiki, a role she repeated in the 2017 sequel A Bad Moms Christmas. Also in 2017 she appeared in The Disaster Artist, CHiPs and How to Be a Latin Lover.
The Good Place, an NBC comedy that began in 2016, gave her the part of Eleanor Shellstrop. The role earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy. It also brought a TCA Award nomination and a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination. Bell made her directorial debut with the eighth episode of the fourth season. The series aired its final episode in January 2020.
In 2018 she began hosting the web series Momsplaining with Kristen Bell, which aired on Ellentube. She offers tips to new and expecting mothers, and the title puns on "mansplaining." In November 2019 she became host and executive producer of the Disney+ docuseries Encore! In 2020 she co-wrote the children's book The World Needs More Purple People with Benjamin Hart. At the 25th Critics' Choice Awards she received the #SeeHer Award for women who "push boundaries on changing stereotypes and acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape."
Nobody Wants This, in 2024, gave her the role of Joanne, an agnostic sex podcaster. It brought another Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. It also brought her first Primetime Emmy nominations, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and, as executive producer, for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Yet some of her most recognizable work never shows her face at all.
Gossip Girl's unseen narrator is Bell's voice. She voiced the titular character in every episode of the 2007-2012 series. She appeared on camera only in a surprise cameo in the final episode, playing herself. In 2021 she returned to narrate the HBO Max reboot and sequel.
Assassin's Creed, released in November 2007 for consoles and April 2008 for PC, used her voice and likeness as Lucy. She reprised Lucy in Assassin's Creed II in November 2009 and in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in November 2010. In 2009 she also voiced Cora in Astro Boy.
Frozen arrived on the 27th of November 2013, with Bell voicing Princess Anna. Her song "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" earned a five-times platinum certification from the RIAA. "For the First Time in Forever" earned four-times platinum, and "Love Is an Open Door" earned three-times platinum. In 2016 she voiced the sloth Priscilla in Zootopia.
In 2018 she voiced Jade Wilson in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies and returned as Anna in Ralph Breaks the Internet. In 2019 she voiced Anna again in the video game Kingdom Hearts III and in Frozen 2, released on the 22nd of November 2019. That month, Bell and Idina Menzel, who play sisters in the Frozen films, received neighboring Hollywood Walk of Fame stars. Bell's was the 2681st and Menzel's was the 2682nd.
Central Park, an Apple TV+ animated musical comedy, premiered on the 29th of May 2020 and reunited Bell with Frozen co-star Josh Gad and Bad Moms co-star Kathryn Hahn. She voiced Molly Tillerman. In June 2020 it was announced that Bell, who is white, would no longer voice the biracial Molly. The role would be recast with a black or mixed race actress, and Bell would voice a new character.
In 2021 she produced and voiced a lead character in the Amazon Prime Video preschool series Do, Re, & Mi. In February 2026 she was announced as the voice of Amy Rose in the live-action and animated film Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
"I love nerds," Bell has said. "Comic-Con junkies are the tastemakers of tomorrow." She has become associated with the idea that "nerdy is the new cool." What she likes about geekiness, she explained, is that it does not matter what you are into. It just means you are not a follower.
Vanessa Juarez of Entertainment Weekly wrote that Veronica Mars, Heroes and Fanboys "solidified her placement at the center of the geek universe." Critics often compared her work to Sarah Michelle Gellar's as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter called Bell "arguably the television successor" when it comes to fighting bad guys.
Bell says many of her characters are tomboys because she was "not homely enough to play the nerdy girl and not nearly pretty enough to play the pretty girl." She has also said she always plays, looks and acts ten years younger than she is.
Fans sometimes mistake her for Lauren Conrad of The Hills. "Yeah, sometimes fans yell, 'Hey, Lauren,' to me, but usually from a distance," Bell said. She has said her friend Hayden Panettiere is more famous and draws far more attention. When photographers close in, Bell steps aside and sometimes helps get Panettiere into the car.
On The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Bell showed mock hostility toward Ferguson's robot skeleton sidekick, Geoff Peterson. She claimed she had wanted to be Ferguson's sidekick herself and cut Peterson down at every chance. Both appeared in the five episodes filmed in France in 2011.
In 2006 and again in 2013, PETA's yearly poll named her "World's Sexiest Vegetarian." In January 2011 it was announced that she would be the new face of Neutrogena. In April 2019, Entrepreneur magazine put her on the cover of its April-May issue.
In late 2007, Bell began dating actor Dax Shepard, who also grew up in the Detroit area. Earlier that year she had ended a five-year relationship with her former fiance, Kevin Mann. They announced their engagement in January 2010 and chose to delay marriage until California legalized same-sex marriage. On the 26th of June 2013, the Supreme Court ruled section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. Bell then asked Shepard to marry her through Twitter, and he accepted. They married at the Beverly Hills County Clerk's Office on the 16th of October 2013. They have two daughters, born in March 2013 and December 2014.
In September 2014, Bell and Shepard starred in a commercial for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S, made by the ad agency McKinney. It drew over 20 million YouTube views, so they made a second one for the holidays.
In May 2016, Bell said she had received treatment for depression and anxiety. She said, "It's important for me to be candid about this so people in a similar situation can realize that they are not worthless and that they do have something to offer." In a March 2020 blog post she wrote, "Everyone has problems." In a conversation with Jimmy Kimmel in August 2018, she explained why she wears scuba gloves while swimming. She fears the feel of wrinkled, water-soaked "prune fingers," and the gloves let her swim with her children.
At age 11, Bell became a vegetarian. By 2012, she and Shepard had become vegan after watching the documentary Forks Over Knives. During her first pregnancy she returned to dairy and eggs, and in 2022 she started eating meat. She is non-religious and identifies as a humanist. In 2023 she revealed that she had taken up Brazilian jiu-jitsu, training with her daughter under Cesalina Gracie.
In the 2008 United States presidential election, Bell supported and campaigned for Barack Obama. With Rashida Jones she visited college campuses in Missouri to encourage voter registration. In December 2007 she joined the Writers Guild of America picket lines during the writers' strike.
In Michigan, Bell fostered animals from the Michigan Humane Society, and she now supports the San Diego-based Helen Woodward Animal Center. In 2005 she adopted Sadie, a black Labrador Retriever rescued from Hurricane Katrina at age 11. In 2014 she launched a Prizeo campaign offering fans a chance to win a date with her in return for donations to Invisible Children, Inc. In 2018 she appeared in a television advertisement for bone marrow donations for the Gift of Life Marrow Registry, and several matches resulted. She won a 2020 Webby Special Achievement Award.
In 2013, Bell and the actors Ryan Devlin, Todd Grinnell and Ravi Patel founded the granola bar company This Bar Saves Lives. It donates nutrition packets to children in Haiti, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia. As of February 2019, it had donated more than 10 million packets.
In 2019, Bell and Shepard founded Hello Bello, which sells plant-based baby care products. In 2020 she partnered to start Happy Dance, a line of vegan CBD products. As of 2021, Hello Bello's estimated annual revenue was $26.1 million, with 104 employees. In 2023 the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, blaming years of declining sales. It was set to be acquired by the private equity firm Hildred Capital Management.
