Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was blocked from sale in Kuwait before release. Every pre-order in the country was cancelled and refunded, and Kuwaiti officials gave no reason. Publications guessed that the game's Gulf War setting was the cause. That reaction hints at what kind of game this is. The 2024 first-person shooter was co-developed by Treyarch and Raven Software and published by Activision. It is the twenty-first main Call of Duty title and the seventh in the Black Ops sub-series. This documentary asks why the project took so long to build. It asks who Pantheon is and what the Cradle does to the people exposed to it. It also asks how critics and players received a shooter with three separate main modes.

  • Play-testing for Black Ops 6 began in 2022, in the middle of a development cycle that lasted four years. No Call of Duty game had taken longer. Raven Software led production of the single-player campaign, while Treyarch built the multiplayer and Zombies modes. Beenox led the Windows version. Activision Central Design, Activision Central Technology, Activision Shanghai, Demonware, High Moon Studios, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games also contributed work.

Associate design director Matt Scronce said the long schedule let the team be "very intentional about what it means to be a Black Ops game". The studio used the time to re-examine visual fidelity, movement and campaign design. It also brought back fan favorites that recent entries had dropped. These were the Prestige ranking system and the Theater mode, which lets players rewatch their earlier multiplayer matches.

Modern Warfare II, released in 2022, introduced the shared engine that Black Ops 6 runs on. Earlier Treyarch games used a separate engine built inside the studio. Part of the four years went to rebuilding "the core Black Ops experience" from the ground up in the new engine. The aim was to make multiplayer feel like Black Ops. Treyarch also overhauled the interface of the Call of Duty HQ launcher, a hub for Warzone and the latest Call of Duty titles. The redesign addressed problems found in Modern Warfare II and in Modern Warfare III from 2023.

  • The campaign opens on the Iraq-Kuwait border at the start of Operation Desert Storm. CIA operatives Troy Marshall, played by Y'lan Noel, and William "Case" Calderon are sent with their handler, Jane Harrow, played by Dawn Olivieri. Their task is to extract the Iraqi minister of defence, Saeed Alawi. Alawi claims a paramilitary force called Pantheon is targeting him. Rogue agent Russell Adler, played by Bruce Thomas, executes him before the extraction can finish. Adler had fled the CIA after being framed as a mole for the Nicaraguan drug lord Raul Menendez. He lets himself be captured and gives Marshall a message for operative Frank Woods: "Bishop takes Rook".

Woods explains that the message points to an abandoned KGB safe house in Bulgaria, code-named the Rook, which was discovered in 1976. CIA Deputy Director Daniel Livingstone, played by Lou Diamond Phillips, has just suspended Woods, Marshall and Case. He also ignores their warnings about Pantheon. The team recruits the former Stasi technical genius Felix Neumann and the assassin Sevati "Sev" Dumas. Then they break Adler out of a CIA black site hidden beneath Washington, D.C. Above ground, a political event hosted by Governor Bill Clinton is under way. Pantheon attacks the site, and the team is blamed and declared fugitive.

Inside one of Saddam Hussein's palaces, the team finds the Cradle, a psychochemical weapon from an abandoned CIA biolab in Kentucky. MI6 agent Helen Park and allied SAS forces help with the assault. At the biolab, Case accidentally inhales the Cradle. He hallucinates fighting undead creatures while a woman's voice explains that Pantheon began as a secret CIA division. That division developed the Cradle as a performance-enhancing drug, and Case was its only test subject. Livingstone shut the project down and disbanded the division.

A recording then reveals that Harrow is working with Pantheon. Under a truth serum, she says she joined after Pantheon leaked claims that the CIA was responsible for her parents' deaths in 1960. Pantheon plans a false flag attack on the Capitol Building. The goal is to discredit Livingstone and put Harrow in his place. Pantheon forces rescue her from the Rook, and Case boards her helicopter, which crashes into a river. Under the influence of released Cradle gas, he strangles her. Livingstone manages to evacuate the Capitol. Two weeks later, he asks the team to work on as an independent unit against Pantheon, which is active in Avalon. Pantheon operative Jackson Caine is already inside his office, accessing his computer.

Eleven missions make up the campaign, which is estimated to take at least 8 hours. Case is a silent protagonist. Players usually have several ways to reach a mission's objectives, and some missions include stealth. Between missions, a safe house lets them choose the next job from an evidence board and talk to non-player characters. They can also spend cash found during missions on perks in three categories: physical abilities, weapons and gear. Certain missions reward weapon blueprints, player skins, stickers and weapon charms that carry over into multiplayer and Zombies.

  • In Black Ops 6, a player can sprint, dive and slide in any direction, which earlier Call of Duty games did not allow. A player lying prone can also rotate through a full 360 degrees. While sprinting, a player can start a tactical sprint that adds a burst of speed for a limited time. A group of Intelligent Movement settings can automate actions such as sprinting and mantling.

Two teams, Rogue Black Ops and Crimson One, face each other across modes that include Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint and Kill Order. Most allow six-versus-six combat. Gunfight is the exception. It is a round-based mode that places two teams of two on small maps with randomized loadouts.

Experience points, known as XP, track each player's progress. Players earn them by killing opponents, completing objectives or finishing challenges, and Zombies awards them too. Ranking up unlocks weapons, equipment and perks. Perks fall into three combat specialties, and choosing three from the same specialty grants in-game buffs.

At level 55, players can enter the Prestige system. It resets them to level 1 in return for cosmetic rewards and a token that permanently unlocks any one loadout item. The reset can happen up to ten times. Anyone who completes the tenth Prestige can rank up to level 1000, with additional cosmetic items for those who reach it.

  • One to four players fight endless hordes of the undead in Zombies, and every completed round brings more enemies and a higher difficulty. Six maps continue the mode's storyline from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, released in 2020. Each map hides a main quest that players must solve without any guidance, along with side quests and easter eggs. Two modes arrived after launch on every map. Directed lets players finish the main quests with in-game assistance. Grief pits two teams of four against each other, and each side hinders the other indirectly with debuffs.

Two currencies shape every run. Essence opens new parts of a map and buys weapon upgrades from the Pack-a-Punch machine. It also pays for extras such as Perk-a-Cola cans and armor vests. Salvage buys ammo modifications, raises a weapon's damage tier and crafts lethal and tactical equipment.

GobbleGums are single-use consumables that grant varied effects. Augments are minor and major upgrades to perks, field upgrades and ammo mods. Each perk, field upgrade and ammo mod has up to three minor and major Augments, and only one of each type can be equipped at a time. That limit pushes players to experiment with different play styles.

  • Jack Wall composed the score for Black Ops 6, as he has for every Black Ops game since Call of Duty: Black Ops II in 2012. Jim Lordeman, Jimmy Hinson and the Canadian rock duo Romes supplied additional music. Wall worked with Hinson and Romes on "Raining the Fire", the main theme song for multiplayer.

Wall started on the score near the end of March 2024. He first wrote for one level, "The Cradle", so the development team could test his music inside the game. Then he turned to the main theme. He feared that going too far without one would leave the score disconnected. Once the theme existed, the rest began to fall into place.

The game is set in the early 1990s, so Wall wanted the grunge sound of that era. He blended it with his orchestral and synth work. After hearing Romes online on Instagram, he asked the duo to roughen some tracks with snarling guitars and thundering drums.

Kevin Sherwood wrote an original song for every Zombies map, and each one is hidden as an easter egg. Every song features a different vocalist, including Cristina Scabbia, Matt Heafy, Malukah and Elena Siegman.

  • Marketing began in May 2024 with two live-action teaser trailers and a website called TheTruthLies.com. Its video clips showed a group vandalizing Mount Rushmore. Activision also placed fictional news reports in several newspapers, including USA Today and The New York Post. Teasers appeared in Call of Duty: Warzone as well, including a cinematic featuring Frank Woods.

The full reveal came during the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase on the 9th of June. A 25-minute Direct presentation followed, covering the story, the gameplay mechanics and Zombies. More detail on multiplayer and Zombies arrived at the Call of Duty: Next showcase on the 28th of August. On the 1st of August, Treyarch unveiled a second version of the website, named The Truth Dies, with Zombies teasers. A cinematic trailer for the Zombies map Terminus came on the 6th of August, and a gameplay trailer on the 8th. Raven Software showed campaign footage at Gamescom 2024 on the 20th of August.

A comic character called The Replacer, played by Peter Stormare, starred in commercials from the end of September through November. His job is to take over people's responsibilities while they are busy playing Black Ops 6. He stood in for a firefighter, a ride-share driver, the Pope, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and a Jeopardy contestant. Stormare had played the role for Black Ops II, Black Ops III and Black Ops 4, but not for Black Ops Cold War. Fans commented on his absence. Chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl and his team responded by featuring him more widely this time. He is also a playable character in Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

Players who pre-ordered the game or held an active Xbox Game Pass subscription got early access to a multiplayer open beta from the 30th of August to the 4th of September. A second period open to all players ran from the 6th to the 9th of September. Critics gave the beta mostly positive impressions.

Black Ops 6 was released on the 25th of October 2024 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Subscribers to select Xbox Game Pass plans, including Ultimate, PC Game Pass and Game Pass for Console, could play on release day. The game also runs on cloud platforms including GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Every mode, even the single-player campaign, requires a continuous internet connection. Activision says a texture streaming feature needs this, because it delivers the best visual quality without a much larger file size.

  • Metacritic summarized the reviews of Black Ops 6 as generally favorable, and OpenCritic found that 91% of critics recommended it. Several publications judged it an improvement on Modern Warfare III. Some called it a return to form for the series.

IGN's Simon Cardy gave the campaign 9/10 and called it a "hugely welcome reinvigoration" of the series. Eurogamer's Chris Tapsell found it "mostly excellent" and liked the variety of its missions. PC Gamer's Nova Smith disagreed, calling it "thoroughly mediocre" and "tedious". Several critics singled out one mission, "Emergence", which borrows horror elements and aspects of Zombies. GamesRadar+'s Andrew Brown described it as the game's most "subversive" level.

VG247's Fran Ruiz called the multiplayer "an absolute blast to play". IGN's Seth G. Macy praised the maps, the gunplay and the omnidirectional movement, though he doubted the movement helped competitively outside very specific situations. GameSpot's Phil Hornshaw liked the fluidity it created but criticized the respawn system, which he blamed on cramped maps.

IGN's Will Borger gave Zombies 8/10. He praised the launch maps Terminus and Liberty Falls but disliked the dialogue. Critics welcomed the return to round-based play after the open-world design of Modern Warfare III. The Guardian's Keith Stuart found the mode stressful but "a real blast" with friends.

Treyarch supported the game with six free seasonal updates. The first arrived on the 14th of November 2024, and the second on the 28th of January 2025. The third, fourth and fifth followed on the 2nd of April, the 29th of May and the 7th of August. The sixth and final season came on the 9th of October. Each season added maps, weapons and playable characters, along with a premium battle pass and cosmetics sold in an in-game store. Crossovers brought in Squid Game characters, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Seth Rogen, Beavis and Butt-Head, the Predator, Jason Voorhees, and Chucky and Tiffany Valentine.

After the Season 1 Reloaded update in December 2024, some players accused Activision of using generative artificial intelligence for loading screens, calling cards, emblems and Zombies artwork. One loading screen showed a zombified Santa Claus with six fingers on one hand. In January 2025, because Valve required it, Activision updated the Steam page for Call of Duty HQ. It now says generative AI tools help develop some in-game assets. The Gamer's Andrew King and Inverse's Trone Dowd condemned the practice. Dowd found it doubly upsetting because many 2D artists had been fired in Microsoft's 2024 layoffs at Xbox and Activision Blizzard.

Black Ops 6 had the largest launch weekend in the franchise's history and was the best-selling video game in the United States in 2024. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted high engagement on release day and a rise in new Game Pass subscriptions within a single day. Sales on PlayStation and Steam ran 60% above those of Modern Warfare III. By July 2025, the game had reached 50 million players. Circana ranks it the fifth highest-grossing PlayStation game of all time in the United States. It is also the best-selling PlayStation 5 game since that console launched in 2020.

The Game Awards nominated Black Ops 6 on the 12th of December 2024, in categories including Best Audio Design, Innovation in Accessibility, Best Action Game and Best Multiplayer Game. The D.I.C.E. Awards followed on the 13th of February 2025 and the Game Developers Choice Awards on the 19th of March. At the British Academy Games Awards on the 8th of April, Y'lan Noel was nominated for his performance as Troy Marshall. A sequel, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, was released on the 14th of November 2025.
