Bully (album)

8 sections
  • Bully is the twelfth studio album by the American rapper and record producer Kanye West, and it reached listeners in 2026 after more than a year of missed deadlines. Its first public glimpse was a short black-and-white film. In it, West's son Saint stands in a wrestling ring holding a toy mallet while professional wrestlers from New Japan Pro-Wrestling close in on him. The image is comic and strange, and it set the tone for a project that kept changing shape. The album surfaced in several versions, with different track lists and, for a while, a different voice on many of its songs. Who was really singing on those early versions? Why did an album take so long to arrive? And did critics hear a comeback or an imitation of West's own past work?

  • Producer Mike Dean says West began the song "Beauty and the Beast" during the sessions for his 2021 album Donda. Another future Bully track, "Preacher Man", was first offered to Drake. Drake declined, and West worked it into his own record instead.

The year 2024 brought two albums with the American singer Ty Dolla Sign, Vultures 1 and Vultures 2, credited to the duo ¥$. Vultures 1 received mixed reviews. Vultures 2 was panned, both for being released in an unfinished state and for its use of artificial intelligence. Producer Erick Sermon said West had shelved a solo album called Y3 to make the Vultures records, and that he had contributed to it in 2023. West denied the story in a message to a fan account, saying no album with that name was in development.

Producer Digital Nas shared text messages in which West spoke of going into "full art studio mode". On the 26th of September 2024, West posted an Instagram video of himself building "Preacher Man" on an ASR-10 keyboard. Later that month he announced Bully during a performance at the Wuyuan River Stadium in Haikou, China, previewing "Beauty and the Beast" and "Preacher Man". More previews followed over the next few days on Instagram and on his website.

The music journalist Touré reported that Bully would be a concept album inspired by West's solitude in Tokyo, with West as sole producer. Touré called the period a "fresh chapter in his life" in which "he can be who he wants to be". He added that earlier albums had usually involved other producers and writers helping West shape the concept.

Don Toliver and Baby Keem were both invited to Tokyo by West in the same month as that report, which complicates the idea of a lone studio retreat. In an April 2025 livestream with Digital Nas, West said the album included co-writing from Quentin Miller, Ty Dolla Sign, Toliver, Malik Yusef and Billy Walsh.

On the 11th of November, West recorded and produced "Father" with Travis Scott, Che Pope and Jahaan Sweet. Rolling Stone says it confirmed that the album was finished recording before West's apology in the Wall Street Journal for antisemitic statements, published in January 2026. Billboard reports that the song "This a Must" began life during the ¥$ sessions under another title.

  • Billboard's Gil Kaufman heard in the early version of Bully a return to West's "most experimental, creatively lauded period" of the late 2000s. He named 808s & Heartbreak (2008) and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) as the reference points. He described "spare, soul-flecked compositions" with West crooning through Auto-Tune. The full album adds pitched-up soul samples and elements of industrial music.

Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" (1964) is among the recordings sampled or interpolated. So are the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" (1966) and Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "(They Long to Be) Close to You" (1970). The list continues with "Huit Octobre 1971" (1975) by Cortex, "Bésame Mama" (1996) by Poncho Sanchez and "Soleil Soleil" (2020) by Pomme.

One track that missed the final list but remains available on the second June 2025 EP, "Losing Your Mind", features an AI deepfake cover of the Can song "Vitamin C" (1972). The song "Bully" borrows the "Ha-ha!" catchphrase of Nelson Muntz from The Simpsons. MusicTech and Variety noted that many of these samples appeared to be uncleared. Pomme had earlier refused West permission to use "Soleil Soleil", citing disagreements with his political views at the time, and the sample did not make the final version.

The original physical edition opens with "Preacher Man", a minimalist track in which West raps about celebrity. "Beauty and the Beast" follows, built on "Don't Have to Shop Around" by the Mad Lads, with a glow that recalls the vocal-melody focus of his 808s & Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy periods. "Last Breath" rides a salsa loop, and West sings in both Spanish and English throughout.

"White Lines" begins with Stevie Wonder's talkbox medley of "Close to You". West sings, "Sometimes I belong by myself, yeah / Don't feel at home by myself, yeah". On "I Can't Wait", Diana Ross's voice lifts the chorus, while West sings about shipping stress at UPS and going "Shaq mode". The title track is based on the neurochemical serotonin and portrays romantic yearning through intoxicated, disconnected imagery.

"All the Love" opens with "Fayek Alaya", an Arabic vocal track by Fairuz, and André Troutman's talk box repeats the same phrase. The result is "slippery and warm", close to the "alien-gospel mood" of the interludes on Yeezus (2013). "This One Here" leans on ad-libs and a chant of "Come on, it's go time" that never stops in the background. "Highs and Lows" reads like a breakup song, with an eight-bar verse where West pleads not to be let go, claiming that "before I break your heart, I'll have a heart attack".

The tenth track, "Mission Control", exists only on the physical edition. Its devotional line, "Holy, holy art thou, I am free because you were bound", repeats three times, and the outro features West's cousin Tony Williams of Wrldfms singing in a similar spirit. The closer, "Circles", is made of two micro-verses and a one-word chorus.

  • Yoh, Toru Yano, Tiger Mask and El Desperado are the four Japanese professional wrestlers who play Saint's attackers in the short film Bully V1. West directed it, and Hype Williams edited it. The album plays over the footage, and the first cut runs 29 minutes, while a later cut runs 45.

Rolling Stone's Jayson Buford read Saint as a stand-in for West, "who envisions himself as a martyr being attacked by all sides". The film itself is comedic, though. GQ's Paul Thompson wrote that its visuals carry "a playfulness and generosity" that matches the music.

Three early versions of the record were released by surprise on the 18th of March 2025 through West's X account, hosted on the website Frame.io. They were called the "screening version", the "post Hype version" and the "post post Hype version". Each held nine or ten songs, and the track lists differed. "Preacher Man" opens the film in every version. In the post Hype version, "Circles" and "Bully" sit fourth and fifth.

"Melrose", featuring Playboi Carti and Ty Dolla Sign, closes the version West posted on X, but it is absent from the screening version and from the YouTube upload. In March 2025, West told a fan that the song would not be on the album and that he would turn it into a solo track. The screening version, dated December 2024, went up on YouTube on the 22nd of March 2025. That upload and the Apple Music release were taken down shortly afterward, without explanation.

The album cover is a black-and-white photograph shot by the Japanese photographer Daidō Moriyama, which West posted on Instagram on the 23rd of October 2024. It shows Saint wearing titanium grills similar to those West wore at the time. West later explained that the title refers to Saint, whom he watched kick a kid for being "weak". The grills' designer, Omar Alvarado, described the shoot this way: "The intensity of this project was unforgettable. Nearly everything that could go wrong did, which made the manufacturing process a real test of skill and resilience. But seeing the team and I overcome every obstacle to deliver was an amazing feeling."

  • On the 25th of October 2024, West opened pre-orders for Bully on his Yeezy website, in vinyl and CD formats. A themed merchandise collection came with them, including t-shirts printed with the album cover or a still from the short film, and a cap with "Bully" written in Japanese.

West previewed new songs while DJing at the 1 Oak club in Tokyo on the 19th of January 2025. Two were remixes of Future's "Lil Demon" (2024) and "Magic Don Juan", and the third was an untitled track. He appeared with his wife Bianca Censori at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on the 3rd of February and played more songs at the after party. One of them had a chorus sung by his daughter, North. On the 9th of February he released "Beauty and the Beast" on his website.

West first named the 15th of June 2025 as the release date, which was the 12th birthday of his daughter North. On the 24th of May 2025, in a recorded meeting with the streamer Sneako, he reaffirmed that date. He also acknowledged the pre-orders, saying vinyl had been sold but not yet manufactured, and he put the figure at around 30,000 units. Much of that conversation covered how he believes artists are exploited by the music industry. The date passed with no album.

On the 16th of June, five tracks intended for Bully appeared on the ISRC website under the names "Ye" and "Kanye West". They were "Highs and Lows", "Beauty and the Beast", "Preacher Man", "Damn" and "White Lines". Direct messages posted by the fan account YeFanatics implied that West planned to release the album in sets of five songs. On the 20th of June, "Preacher Man", "Beauty and the Beast" and "Damn" reached streaming platforms as a three-track Bully EP. A second EP followed on the 27th of June, holding "Last Breath" and "Losing Your Mind". West then held a concert in Shanghai, China, on the 12th of July in support of the album.

A release date of the 25th of July came and went, and the album was rescheduled for the 26th of September. On the 22nd of September it moved to the 7th of November. On the 3rd of November it moved again, to the 12th of December. On the 8th of December it slipped to the 30th of January 2026. On the 28th of January, West pushed it to the 20th of March, a date that coincided with a distribution deal with the American media company Gamma.

The Yeezy website was updated on the 3rd of January 2026 with pre-order options for multi-colored vinyl, CD, cassette and bundles, and the cassette and CD images showed a track listing. On the 30th of January, West performed in Mexico City for the first time in nearly 20 years. Billboards appeared across the United States on the 10th of March, confirming a release on the 27th of March. Two days later, a video circulated of a drone displaying visuals promoting Bully over a Texas farm.

  • In a February 2025 interview with Justin Laboy, West said Bully would feature AI vocals, and he later put the share at half of the vocals on Bully V1. To show what the technology could do, he ran Lil RT's debut single "60 Miles" through a voice model built to imitate himself. Lil RT's mother approved, although she had not been told beforehand that West would use her son's vocals. When critics objected, West compared the tool to Auto-Tune, which also met backlash before becoming widely accepted in music.

GQ's Paul Thompson wrote that the AI use is not immediately obvious, because West's vocals mostly serve as "texture rather than the songs' engine". He said it becomes clear about halfway through the album, when the vocals start to resemble those of 808s & Heartbreak.

Vocals were only part of the story. In the same Laboy interview, West praised AI stem separation, which can isolate the vocals, bassline or drums of any song. When he sends a song or sample to his engineers, he replies with the engineer's name followed by "AI". He had earlier used separation technology on the Stem Player, a product made with Kano Computing.

With the surprise early versions, West said the album was a work in progress and that he regretted using AI. He said he had grown to hate it and planned to re-record the lyrics with his own voice. Most vocals in the original and physical releases were still AI-generated deepfakes, and he later re-recorded most of the lyrics himself.

On the 24th of March 2026, a vinyl rip leaked online with the AI vocals still in place. HotNewHipHop reported one user calling it "one of the worst albums they've heard". The Financial Express called the reaction "brutal" and said the backlash overshadowed earlier assurances from West's team. West affiliate Joseph Karre defended the album, saying the timeline would look "a lot different on Friday". That same day West posted a new tracklist and promised it would feature "no AI".

  • Six additional tracks appeared on the replacement list, and "Highs and Lows" and "Mission Control" were appended later, for eight new tracks in total. Around the same time, a Beats Electronics advertisement featuring Travis Scott from December 2025 resurfaced online. In its last seconds, a snippet of "Father", one of the newly added tracks, plays in the background.

On the 24th of March, West had announced three worldwide listening experiences for the 26th, but they were soon postponed. He instead premiered Bully at a listening party at WePlay studios in Inglewood, California. The YouTube livestream began an hour after midnight on the 27th of March. Travis Scott, André Troutman, CeeLo Green and Nine Vicious appeared as guests. West also hosted a professional wrestling exhibition during the event, involving independent wrestlers A.M.B., Terry Yaki and Jay Lucas, and it took place in Atlanta. Hours later, West removed the livestream from public view.

The album reached streaming services on the 28th of March, a day after its intended release, through YZY and Gamma. It had eighteen tracks and left out "Mission Control", which became a physical exclusive, and "Outside", which had never been previewed. "Father" was released as the lead single alongside the official music video.

The English musician James Blake received a production credit for "This One Here", which grew out of an unreleased collaborative album with West from 2022 called War. Blake later asked for the credit to be removed. He said his structural and pitching contributions remained, but the released song had drifted too far from his version for him to want credit for someone else's work.

On the 3rd of April, at the after-party of West's second performance at SoFi Stadium, a new track featuring Don Toliver was previewed, and listeners speculated it was for a deluxe edition. On the 5th of April, Gamma confirmed in an Instagram story that a deluxe edition was "on the way".

West had announced the SoFi show on the 9th of March, a one-night concert for the 3rd of April and his first Los Angeles performance since 2021. When more than one million people applied in the pre-sale queue, he added a concert on the 1st of April. Pre-sale buyers had to pre-save Bully, and a few lucky pre-registrants were to receive free tickets.

West was planned to headline Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park, London, from the 10th to the 12th of July. On the 7th of April, after Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other British politicians condemned the planned appearances, the Home Office announced that West was blocked from visiting the United Kingdom. Wireless then cancelled the entire festival for 2026. Elsewhere, shows were booked for Turkey on the 30th of May and the Netherlands on the 6th and the 8th of June. Georgia, Albania, Italy, Spain and Portugal followed through to the 7th of August. On the 22nd of May, West added a concert at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, for the 26th of June, and over a million people queued for the pre-sale.

  • Billboard's Michael Saponara found that listeners willing to overlook West's behavior enjoyed Bully V1, and he heard echoes of his 2000s work. GQ's Paul Thompson called it West's best collection of beats in more than a decade, and a "rich, warm, and optimistic record" that feels secluded from the internet, the world and even himself. Thompson compared its production favorably to the singles "Only One" (2014) and "FourFiveSeconds" (2015). GQ's Frazier Tharpe praised the "admittedly very good production". Nyla Symone of The Breakfast Club doubted West could make a comeback but said that as far as excellence at his craft, "he's never swayed from that".

Rolling Stone's Jayson Buford called Bully V1 West's best album since The Life of Pablo (2016), showing "glimmers of the artist he once was". He also found it West's first boring album and not good enough to restore his reputation. He called the lyrics of "Bully" "nonsensical". Billboard's Kyle Dennis criticized the curation and sequencing, saying of West's albums, "I haven't had a favorable listening experience top-to-bottom in quite some time".

The full release polarized critics. Vice called it West's "most coherent, satisfying project in years". Eddy "Precise" Lamarre of Rolling Out described it as a reset for West's career. Esquire's Rudra Mulmule thought it "surprisingly restrained" in controversy, noting a "tension between chaos and introspection". Peter McGoran of Hot Press, reviewing at the listening party, called it West's "first good album in 10 years" and "a return to the old Kanye". Saeed Saeed of The National ranked it West's seventh best solo album while noting unfinished elements.

Preezy Brown of Rolling Stone picked six standouts: "Sisters and Brothers", "Father", "King", "Preacher Man", "All the Love" and "I Can't Wait". He still called the album "lifeless overall". His colleague Jeff Ihaza praised the music as "easily some of the best-sounding Kanye has made in years" but said the sound was "like decades of his music fed into a computer program". Peter A. Berry of Complex called it a "spacey cloud of glossy hollowness". Pitchfork's Kieran Press-Reynolds gave it 3.4/10 and called it "a cheap hit of retro-Kanye". Ludovic Hunter-Tilney of the Financial Times gave a negative review that framed its criticism around West's public apology in January 2026.

Fans were split too. Zachary Horvath of HotNewHipHop said the listening party left fans with reactions "from pure eagerness to uncertainty". Some fans criticized Nine Vicious' inclusion on the album. The internet personality Kai Cenat called the album a "banger". Some fans dismissed Pitchfork's review and called the publication irrelevant. Jordan Rose of Complex conducted street interviews with fans and got a largely positive response.

Bully debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 behind BTS' Arirang for the week of the 2nd of April 2026. It earned a reported 152,000 album-equivalent units, made up of 96,000 streaming units, equal to 98.43 million on-demand streams, and 56,000 album sales. Gamma disputed that figure and claimed 201,000 units in the first full week, since the album arrived on a Saturday. On release, 16 of its 18 tracks charted on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album topped Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Independent Albums charts.

In the United Kingdom, Bully debuted at number three on the main Albums chart, number two on R&B Albums and number eight on Independent Albums. It entered at number three in Australia and topped the Hip-Hop/R&B Albums chart there. It debuted at number two in Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Lithuania, Portugal and Poland. It reached number three in Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland, and number four in Austria and Flemish Belgium. In Japan it appeared on four charts, entering at number three on Dance & Soul Albums and number 75 on Hot Albums.
