Travis Scott

• 1. Introduction

  ›

Travis Scott, born Jacques Bermon Webster II, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer from Houston, Texas. Within a single twelve-month span, three of his songs entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number one. No artist in the history of that chart had done it before. He has also collected ten Grammy Award nominations, along with a long list of other trophies. Yet his path to that point ran through floors, couches and delayed releases. How does a young producer from Houston grow into a headliner whose tours and brand partnerships reach far beyond music? What sets his sound apart from the rap around him? And what happened one night in his hometown that drew far more attention than any chart position ever did?

Jacques Bermon Webster II was born on the 30th of April 1991 in Houston, Texas. His father was an entrepreneur and a soul musician, and his grandfather was a jazz composer. From the age of one until he was six, Webster lived with his grandmother in South Park, a Houston neighborhood notorious for crime. Scott later said that what he saw there made him determined to get out, and that it gave him his edge.

Missouri City, a middle-class suburb bordering southwest Houston, was where he went next, living with his parents. His father ran his own business there. Webster attended Elkins High School and took part in musical theater. He graduated at seventeen.

The stage name Travis Scott is a blend of two people. Travis was the name of a favorite uncle. Scott came from Scott Mescudi, the real name of the rapper Kid Cudi, who ranked among his biggest inspirations. For a time the name was stylized as Travi$ Scott.

The University of Texas at San Antonio gave him less than two years. He dropped out during his second year to pursue music full time. The next stretch of his life would be spent on other people's floors and couches.

In 2008, Webster and his longtime friend Chris Holloway released an untitled EP on the social networking site Myspace. They worked as a duo called The Graduates. The following year, Webster and a schoolmate, OG Chess, formed a second group, The Classmates. It released two projects, one with Buddy Rich in 2009 and Cruis'n USA in 2010. Webster mainly handled production. Personal conflicts and financial disputes ended the group in late 2012.

Washington Heights in New York City was his next stop. There he worked with a friend, Mike Waxx, who owned the music website Illroots. Webster slept on the floor at his friend's house and spent most of his days in the studio of the producer Just Blaze. Frustrated by the lack of progress, he left New York after only four months.

Los Angeles went badly at first. A friend who had promised him housing abandoned him. His parents cut him off financially, and he was forced back to Houston, where his parents then kicked him out of their home. He returned to Los Angeles and slept on the couch of a friend who studied at the University of Southern California.

The rapper T.I., based in Atlanta and the owner of Grand Hustle Records, heard a Webster production called "Lights (Love Sick)". T.I.'s representative contacted Webster in Los Angeles and invited him to a studio meeting. At that meeting T.I. freestyled over "Animal", another Webster beat.

Contracts followed quickly. In 2012 Scott signed a first major-label recording deal with Epic Records. He also signed a publishing deal with Kanye West's GOOD Music, working as an in-house producer. In April 2013 he entered a joint-venture deal with T.I.'s Grand Hustle. Owl Pharaoh, his first solo full-length project, was already waiting, and it would not arrive on schedule.

  ›

Owl Pharaoh was first meant to be a free download in 2012. The project slipped, and Kanye West and the producer Mike Dean later re-created it. Sample clearance problems then delayed it again. To keep momentum, Scott released "Blocka La Flame", a remix of the GOOD Music artist Pusha T's single "Blocka".

On the 27th of March 2013, XXL announced that Scott belonged to its Freshman Class of 2013. A month later he said Owl Pharaoh was his official debut mixtape, due on the iTunes Store on the 21st of May 2013. His commercial debut single, "Upper Echelon", featured 2 Chainz and T.I.

His second mixtape, Days Before Rodeo, came in 2014. At the South by Southwest festival he performed a song then called "1975" with Big Sean. He later renamed it "Don't Play", and it samples "M.O.N.E.Y" by the English rock band the 1975. It became the lead single in July 2014.

The Rodeo Tour, with Young Thug and the producer Metro Boomin, began on the 1st of March 2015 in Santa Ana, California. It ended a month later in Portland, Oregon. Kanye West, Chris Brown, Wale and Birdman made guest appearances in certain cities.

Rodeo, his debut studio album, came out on the 4th of September 2015. It opened at number three on the Billboard 200 with 85,000 album-equivalent units. Its single "Antidote" reached number 16 on the Hot 100 and later earned a septuple Platinum certification.

Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight followed in 2016 and became his first number-one album on the Billboard 200. Universal Music Publishing Group signed him to a worldwide deal a day after that chart news. In 2017 he teamed with Quavo as the duo Huncho Jack. Their album debuted at number three, and seven of its tracks charted on the Hot 100.

In August 2017, after finishing the DAMN. Tour as a supporting act for Kendrick Lamar, Scott tweeted two words: ALBUM MODE.

• 5. Astroworld and Beyond

  ›

Astroworld takes its name from the defunct Houston theme park of the same name. It was released on the 3rd of August 2018 to critical acclaim and opened at number one with 537,000 album-equivalent units. That made it one of the biggest hip-hop debuts of the decade. Its single "Sicko Mode", with Drake, reached number one on the Hot 100, earned a 15x Platinum certification and drew two Grammy nominations.

A Netflix documentary, Look Mom I Can Fly, arrived on the 28th of August 2019. In October 2019 the single "Highest in the Room" became his first song to debut at number one. In December his Cactus Jack label released the compilation JackBoys, which topped the Billboard 200. In 2020 "The Scotts", with Kid Cudi, and "Franchise", with Young Thug and M.I.A., also debuted at number one. He additionally wrote "The Plan" as the theme for Christopher Nolan's film Tenet.

Utopia, his fourth studio album, came five years after Astroworld. Its lead single "K-pop" featured Bad Bunny and The Weeknd. The album was released on the 28th of July 2023 with 19 tracks. It opened with 496,000 units, stayed at number one for four weeks, and amassed 7.1 billion global streams. That made it the best-selling hip-hop album of 2023.

Circus Maximus, a 75-minute film that Scott wrote, starred in and co-directed with Harmony Korine, accompanied the record. It screened in select AMC theaters and later reached Apple Music and YouTube. The related tour included a concert at the Circus Maximus in Rome, and it was reported to have grossed about $209 million. At that time, it was the highest-grossing tour by a solo rapper.

Old work found new life, too. A remastered Days Before Rodeo arrived on the 23rd of August 2024. It sank to number 106 in its third week, then jumped 105 places to number one in its fourth. That was the ninth-largest jump to the top in Billboard 200 history.

On the 24th of January 2025, "4x4" debuted atop the Hot 100 as his fifth number-one single. JackBoys 2 opened at number one in July 2025 with 232,000 units, his sixth consecutive number-one album. Plans for a full album with Kid Cudi were reported cancelled in December 2022. By July 2023, Cudi said it would happen at some point. In February 2026, the producer Havoc said Scott and Kanye West were working on a collaboration project, and Scott appears on the track FATHER from West's album Bully.

• 6. Sound and Influences

  ›

Producers Mike Dean and Alex Tumay shaped the studio techniques behind Scott's records. He leans heavily on Auto-Tune, phasing, delays and stereo-sculpted layers of chorus and harmony. Critics have called the result ambient, psychedelic trap and pop rap. Scott himself has said, "I'm not hip-hop".

Vulture described his sound as "unremittingly dark, syncretic, hi-res, and above all unnatural". Spin compared Owl Pharaoh with Kid Cudi's 2010 album Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager.

Björk, he has said, is "one of my biggest inspirations for why I do what I do". His list of influences runs through Bon Iver, Kid Cudi, M.I.A., Kanye West, Toro y Moi, Tame Impala, T.I. and Thom Yorke.

The visual side matters just as much. In 2016 the filmmaker Harmony Korine made a cameo in the short video for "Last Time", a collaboration between Scott and Gucci Mane. In 2021 the photographer Spike Jonze shot Scott for issue 362 of i-D Magazine, titled "Utopia in Dystopia". Jonze also supplied original artwork for a limited cover. The photographer David LaChapelle reportedly shot the cover of Astroworld, which showed a large golden replica of Scott's head.

Broadway also appeals to him. In 2018 he said he would like to record an album of show tunes and, eventually, write a musical of his own.

  ›

From the 23rd to the 25th of April 2020, Scott performed five virtual shows inside the video game Fortnite, under the title "Astronomical". More than 27 million unique participants joined, a record for Fortnite events. Players could buy a Travis Scott outfit and cosmetics, and Epic Games sold merchandise including action figures and Nerf guns. After the Astroworld tragedy in 2021, Epic pulled an emote featuring "Out West", and the cosmetic set has not returned since 2020.

In September 2020 McDonald's launched "The Travis Scott", a variation on its Quarter Pounder with Cheese. It was the first nationally distributed celebrity-endorsed meal in the chain's history. The only earlier celebrity meal was the "McJordan" burger with Michael Jordan in the Chicago area in 1992. Demand was so high that some restaurants ran out of ingredients. The line of merchandise included a rug and a McNugget-shaped body pillow.

Fashion came naturally to him. His first project with A Bathing Ape, in 2015, was a collection of three pieces including a shark hoodie. Diamond Supply Co. followed in 2016. In 2017 the Houston Rockets gave every fan at Toyota Center a T-shirt that Scott designed, printed with the slogan "Run as One" in his handwriting. Nike released his Cactus Jack Air Jordan 1 in 2019. Dior menswear came in 2021, and in 2023 Audemars Piguet issued a limited "Cactus Jack" Royal Oak watch inspired by Utopia. In May 2024 his first Jordan Brand sneaker, the CJ-1 T-Rexx, sold out online instantly. In 2025 the eyewear brand Oakley named him Chief Visionary Officer.

In October 2020, PlayStation made Scott a Strategic Creative Partner for the launch of the PlayStation 5.

Cactus Jack Records, which Scott founded in 2017 and Epic Records distributes, grew from this world. It signed Don Toliver in 2018, along with Sheck Wes, and later SoFaygo in 2020. Of the label Scott said, "I want first and foremost to help other artists, launch new names, to provide opportunities." In November 2024 he hosted CactusCon, a multi-day activation of performances, installations and merchandise, as part of ComplexCon in Las Vegas.

• 8. Crowd Crush and Consequences

  ›

On the 5th of November 2021, at least ten people died and hundreds were injured in a crowd crush during Scott's set at the Astroworld Festival in NRG Park, Houston. The festival had been announced in August 2018, shortly after the album, and it stood across the street from the former Six Flags AstroWorld site. The 2019 edition had already seen three people trampled as a crowd rushed to enter. Organizers cancelled the 2020 edition because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2021 festival returned in a multi-day format.

The crush occurred on the first night, and the second night was cancelled. Video footage shows Scott continuing to perform while the crowd chanted for him to stop. He asked security to help for a moment, then carried on for roughly another hour. Victims ranged in age from 9 to 27. A lawsuit was soon announced, started by Kristian Paredes, who filed for $1,000,000 over his injuries. On the 29th of June 2023, a Texas grand jury declined to indict Scott in a criminal probe of the crowd surge.

Earlier incidents shadowed the festival. At Lollapalooza in 2015, Scott was arrested for disorderly conduct after urging fans to ignore security and rush the stage. He pleaded guilty to reckless conduct and received one year of supervised release. In 2017 he was arrested after a show in Northwest Arkansas, and a fan sued over a fall from a balcony at Terminal 5 in Manhattan. In March 2023 he was accused of punching a sound technician at the Nebula nightclub in New York. A settlement was reached and the NYPD pressed no charges. In June 2024 he was arrested in Miami Beach and released on a $650 bond, and in August 2024 he was arrested in Paris after a fight and released without charges.

He returned to the stage in stages. A feature on "Hold That Heat" came in April 2022, his first release since the tragedy. A Billboard Music Awards performance followed on the 15th of May 2022. On the 6th of August 2022 he played his first solo show since the crush, at The O2 Arena in London.

Giving became part of the picture. Scott set up the Cactus Jack Foundation in November 2020 to help Houston youth with education costs and creative projects. In December 2021 it gave out thousands of toys to Houston children. In May 2022 he pledged $1 million in scholarships to 100 HBCU students. That year he also launched Project HEAL, which provided $5 million for community initiatives in Texas.
