  • Adam Levine was twelve years old when he played his first professional gig at The Troubadour. He was so nervous that he played with his back to the audience. Today he is the lead singer, rhythm guitarist and only continuous member of the pop rock band Maroon 5. He has also become a fixture of network television. The road there included a first band that went nowhere, a move to New York and a song that rescued a stalled career. Who was the anxious boy who turned away from his crowd? What made him abandon one sound for another? And how did a single frontman grow into the face of a band, a talent show and a string of businesses?

  • Adam Noah Levine was born on the 18th of March 1979 in Los Angeles. His father, Fredric Levine, founded the retail chain M. Fredric. His mother, Patsy, whose maiden name was Noah, worked as an admissions counselor. The couple divorced when Adam was seven, and he went into therapy. He spent weekdays with his mother and weekends with his father, and he has a younger brother.

Levine's father and maternal grandfather were Jewish, while his maternal grandmother was a Protestant. Levine identifies as Jewish but, according to The Jewish Chronicle, is spiritual rather than religious. As a child he chose not to have a Bar Mitzvah because of the custom of gifts. He explained, "I felt as though a lot of kids were trying to cash in." His uncles on his mother's side include the journalist and author Timothy Noah and the television producer Peter Noah.

Levine describes his family as "very musical" and credits his mother with setting him on his path. Her idols were Simon & Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles. Around the age of ten he picked up a guitar. In his words, "I fell so madly in love with it, it's all I did." His listening grew to include The Who, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Nirvana. In high school he added Bob Marley, Bill Withers, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Phish and Michael Jackson.

At Brentwood School, Levine met Jesse Carmichael and Mickey Madden, who would become his bandmates. He remembers himself as a little rebellious at school, unwilling to do what teachers asked while music filled his thoughts. In February 1994 he formed a garage band called Kara's Flowers with Carmichael, Madden and a friend named Ryan Dusick. Levine sang and played guitar.

The group played its first gig in 1995 at the Whisky a Go Go, a nightclub in West Hollywood. Independent producer Tommy Allen saw them perform in Malibu. With his partner John DeNicola, Allen had the band record an 11-track album. A string of industry showcases in Los Angeles followed, and producer Rob Cavallo helped them land a deal with Reprise Records.

The Fourth World arrived in August 1997, the same year the band appeared on an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. Expectations were high. The album sold only about 5,000 copies. When Cavallo left the label, Reprise dropped the group, and the band broke up. Levine later reflected, "Make a record quickly, put it out. No touring base, no nothing." He and Carmichael then left Los Angeles to study at Five Towns College in New York.

  • Levine told MTV News in 2002 that New York was where he began waking up to hip-hop and R&B. It was a world far from Brentwood High. The city introduced him to hip-hop, R&B, gospel and soul. He had already been shaken by Aaliyah's song "Are You That Somebody?", which convinced him to chase a more soulful sound than Kara's Flowers offered. He began reshaping his style, and he heavily emulated Stevie Wonder.

Levine and Carmichael dropped out of college after one semester and reunited with Madden and Dusick. The four tried country and folk before settling on groove-based music. Levine said the old approach had worn thin. "We were just so sick of being a typical rock 'n' roll band," he recalled, and he felt he needed to look elsewhere for vocal inspiration.

Several labels rejected the band's demo. It then reached three executives at Octone Records: James Diener, Ben Berkman and David Boxenbaum. Following Berkman's advice, the band added a fifth member, guitarist James Valentine, and took the name Maroon 5. Berkman later told HitQuarters that Levine "seemed to be a very shy, shoe-gazing type." A fifth member, he reasoned, could handle guitar and free the singer to become "the star I perceived him to be."

Around this time Levine was working as a writer's assistant on the CBS television show Judging Amy. Its producer, Barbara Hall, was a friend of his family. On the job he spent his spare time writing songs about an ex-girlfriend. Those songs became the backbone of the debut album Songs About Jane, released in June 2002, and radio support arrived only slowly.

  • Songs About Jane slowly gained airplay and turned into a sleeper hit. It sold an estimated 10 million copies. Two years after its release, it ranked as the tenth best-selling album of 2004.

In 2005 Maroon 5 won its first Grammy Award, for Best New Artist. The following year the band won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The winning song was "This Love", the second single from the debut.

By 2006 the band was recording again, and It Won't Be Soon Before Long came out in May 2007. Levine called it "a vast improvement" and said it was more self-confident and powerful lyrically. A ten-date club tour of small venues in Europe and the United States ran from April to June 2007. The album earned a Grammy nomination, as did three of its singles: "Makes Me Wonder", "Won't Go Home Without You" and "If I Never See Your Face Again". Only "Makes Me Wonder" won.

In 2007 Levine also said he believed Maroon 5 was nearing its peak and might make one more album before disbanding. "I don't know if I want to do this into my 40s and 50s and beyond," he explained. By 2010 he had changed course and said the band had no plans to disband. He has also ruled out a solo career, declaring, "I would sooner have another band."

Recording for the third album began in Switzerland in 2009 with the producer and songwriter Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Levine said Lange "worked me harder than anyone ever has." Hands All Over was released in 2010 and did not initially meet expectations. Levine told the Los Angeles Times it was a pile of "disparate ideas and songs that didn't make any sense together."

The turnaround came with "Moves Like Jagger", which featured Christina Aguilera. Levine called it "definitely a risk." The single sold 8.5 million copies, making it the ninth-best-selling digital single of 2011 and the eighth-best-selling digital single of all time. Levine later said it was "totally reviving the band."

That song was the first time Maroon 5 worked with an outside writer, so the band repeated the experiment on Overexposed. Its title is supposedly a nod to Levine's public ubiquity. He told Rolling Stone it was the band's most dance-driven record. Its lead single, "Payphone", helped earn Grammy nominations for Best Pop Vocal Album and for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The Overexposed Tour ran from 2012 to 2013, with its European leg stretching into 2014 because of scheduling conflicts. In 2013 the band also headlined the Honda Civic Tour alongside Tony Lucca.

The fifth album, V, arrived in 2014, again made with Ryan Tedder, Max Martin and others. Five singles came from it. The Maroon V Tour opened with a show in Dallas in February 2015. On the 10th of February 2017, Levine received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

  • According to the polling firm E-Poll Market Research, public awareness of Levine nearly tripled after he joined NBC's reality talent show The Voice. He began there as a coach and judge in 2011. The show has been credited with reviving Maroon 5's faltering career after the weak sales of Hands All Over.

In the show's third season, #TeamAdam drew 203,000 Twitter mentions and @AdamLevine drew 2.14 million. Both totals beat every other coach. Commentators described him as the series' breakout star. In 2013 The Hollywood Reporter estimated that he was paid $10-12 million for each season.

His acts won repeatedly. Javier Colon took the first season for his team, Tessanne Chin won the fifth, and Jordan Smith won the ninth. Levine also collected a Teen Choice Award and an OFTA Television Award for the show in 2011. In 2014 he and fellow coach Blake Shelton shared the Young Hollywood Award for Best Bromance. The pair later won Best Duo at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Levine left the series in May 2019 after sixteen seasons and eight years. In June 2024 it was revealed that he would return for the 27th season, which aired in the spring of 2025. He then came back for the 29th season as well. That season produced his fourth winning contestant, Alexia Jayy.

  • In the 33rd-season premiere of Saturday Night Live in 2007, Levine appeared in an SNL Digital Short called Iran So Far. He played himself alongside Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen and Jake Gyllenhaal. His part was to sing a humorous bridge to a love song for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In 2008 Levine performed on Comedy Central's Night of Too Many Stars and made a cameo on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He also endorsed Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. In 2013 he hosted Saturday Night Live and appeared with Kendrick Lamar in The Lonely Island's digital short "YOLO". Reviewers generally disliked his hosting and called it "mediocre" and "subpar." During the show's 40th season he played Freddie Mercury and sang a snippet of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the "Joan Rivers" sketch.

In 2012 Levine made his acting debut in American Horror Story: Asylum. He played Leo Morrison, a newly-wed photographer honeymooning with his wife, played by Jenna Dewan, at the Briarcliff Manor asylum. His scenes were shot around the band's summer touring schedule. He admitted he was not a fan of horror and did not watch the episodes because they were "so weird and disturbing."

A film role followed. In June 2012 Levine was cast in Begin Again, originally titled Can a Song Save Your Life?, directed by John Carney. Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo played the leads. Levine played Dave Kohl, her songwriting partner and former boyfriend of five years, who leaves her behind after finding success in music. The film premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival to generally favorable reviews. He contributed "Lost Stars" to that film and "Go Now" to Carney's Sing Street. His later screen credits include Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping in 2016 and Fun Mom Dinner and The Clapper, both in 2017.

His guest spots on other artists' records stretch widely. In 2005 he appeared on "Live Again" by the Ying Yang Twins and on Kanye West's "Heard 'Em Say". That song was created during a flight he and West shared, and its refrain later surfaced in the Maroon 5 song "Nothing Lasts Forever". Levine called the collaboration "very pure and very easy." He sang on Alicia Keys' cover of The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" and on K'naan's "Bang Bang".

In 2009 he recorded "Gotten" for Slash's first solo album. In February 2010 he was among about 80 musicians on the charity remake "We Are the World 25 for Haiti". His 2011 guest turn on Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts" peaked within the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. He recorded vocals for 50 Cent's "My Life" almost two years before it came out in 2012 with Eminem. In 2016 he joined The Lonely Island on "I'm So Humble". More recent partners include Joe Pesci, Lil Wayne and Jack Harlow.

In November 2013 People magazine named Levine its Sexiest Man Alive. He was the first singer to win the title and the second non-actor, after John F. Kennedy Jr.

  • In 2013 The Hollywood Reporter, citing "sources familiar with his many business dealings," estimated that Levine would earn more than $35 million that year. The dealings began in October 2008, when he worked with First Act on the First Act 222 Guitar, built to his specifications and sold through Target stores. Two years later he launched a fashion line called "222" at the Project Trade Show in Las Vegas. It offered jeans, basic T-shirts and leather jackets, and he built it with his father, Fred, and his cousin Sami Cooper.

In June 2011 Levine joined "Own It", an educational campaign about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Drugmaker Shire created it, with the Attention Deficit Disorder Association and CHADHD as partners. The project aimed at adults who had been diagnosed as children, to show the condition can continue into adulthood. Levine was diagnosed with ADHD as a teenager and wrote an article about his experience for ADDitude Magazine.

Levine founded 222 Records in February 2012. He said the idea came from wanting to sign Rozzi Crane, a University of Southern California music student he found through a mutual friend. She became its first singer. Glee actor Matthew Morrison, the Mexican artist Diego Boneta and The Voice contestant Tony Lucca followed. Reports said he was negotiating with distributors and organizing staff for departments such as marketing, radio and publicity.

His production company, 222 Productions, started in 2013. Its first project was Sugar, a 2018 YouTube Premium series inspired by the Maroon 5 music video of the same name. In it, music artists crash events for unsuspecting fans. The company also produced Songland, a competition series that premiered on NBC on the 28th of May 2019, with Levine as executive producer. The company signed a deal with Wheelhouse Entertainment.

In September 2012 Levine traveled to the Philippines to launch a menswear collection with the clothing company Bench. In January 2013 he announced a partnership with Sears Holdings, owner of Kmart and the shopping platform ShopYourWay, which also signed Nicki Minaj. His menswear line went on sale on the 1st of October 2013 through 500 Kmart stores and online. He said he liked that the company promoted creative control, adding, "I like to be involved with process rather than just phoning it in." He later became a spokesperson for Proactiv and talked in its commercial about his acne in high school.

In February 2013 Levine introduced his first fragrance, made with ID Perfumes, at an installation event in Los Angeles. The scents for men and women are sold at Macy's in microphone-shaped bottles. The launch drew attention because of a tweet he had posted the year before. He had said he wanted to put an official ban on celebrity fragrances, "punishable by death from this point forward."

In January 2020 Levine became an ambassador for Shure's Aonic 215 and 50 wireless earphones and headphones. In 2021 he and his wife, Behati Prinsloo, founded the tequila company Calirosa, whose bottles became available in December 2021.

  • Levine is a countertenor and tenor with a four-octave vocal range, and critics have noted his falsettos. Salon wrote that when he sings come-ons, his voice gives the music "a satisfying lewdness." Entertainment Weekly described his delivery on It Won't Be Soon Before Long as "smug, R&B-slick deadpan." The Boston Globe praised an onstage presence that suggested up-for-anything playfulness and a rock solid work ethic.

Critics placed Songs About Jane in a "bluesy funk" vein and compared it to the English band Busted. They also compared Levine to Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay. Later records were judged more reggae and anthemic pop, with comparisons to Coldplay. Influences from The Police and Prince also show up in his work. Levine refuses to fit his music into one genre and told Billboard he loves "every single kind of music." He calls himself an orthodox lyricist. Romance, love and the lack thereof remain his main themes, and he says he tired of vague lyrics and prefers being explicit without being totally explicit.

His popularity outside music has led critics to call him a "stand-alone star" who pushed other band members into the backseat. Guitarist James Valentine noted that Levine's vocals are the central aspect around which the music revolves. Paper credited the frontman's entertaining nature for keeping Maroon 5 current, and Delta Sky called him "a natural, if slightly neurotic, leading man." Levine says the image was deliberate. "We wanted there to be a frontman," he said, and he agreed to step out for the band, not for his ego.

In early 2010, at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue release party in Las Vegas, Levine met Russian model Anne Vyalitsyna. They began a relationship that ended in April 2012 in an amicable manner. That May he began dating Behati Prinsloo, a Namibian Victoria's Secret model. The couple married on the 19th of July 2014, with Jonah Hill officiating. They have two daughters, born in 2016 and 2018, and a son born in 2023. Levine has been friends with Hill since grade school, and Hill's brother Jordan Feldstein managed Maroon 5 until Feldstein's death. He has also been friends with actress Kate Hudson since their teens.

Levine supports gay rights and has a gay brother. In 2011 he made a video on Maroon 5's YouTube account for the It Gets Better Project. In January 2012 he announced that the band had moved its post-Grammy Awards show away from a Los Angeles restaurant because of its backing of Proposition 8. In July 2020 he and Prinsloo worked with Ferrari and Save the Children to raise funds for U.S. education programs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Controversy has followed him too. In 2013 an unnamed security guard filed a hostile work environment lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against Universal Music Publishing Group. It mentioned Levine, and the guard claimed she was told that anything he did in the lobby would be tolerated. The company called the allegations "absurd." On the 27th of February 2020, Maroon 5 played the Viña del Mar International Song Festival in Chile. The set began 29 minutes late, and the press called it mediocre. Leaked video showed Levine offstage, angry and insulting the city. He apologized on Instagram, and the band blamed technical problems with his earpieces. Chilean fans answered by posting recipes for traditional Chilean dishes in the comments of his Instagram account.

In September 2022, at least four women accused Levine of cheating on Prinsloo with them, presenting DMs, texts and TikTok videos. He denied an affair but admitted "crossing" the line and said he had taken proactive steps to remedy this with his family. The episode produced memes based on his texts.
