Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson reached the end of a long awards season in 2025 with a striking comparison. Her first brush with acclaim, she said, had felt like a "shock entrance, or invitation, into this world." This time was different. When you have been in it for 26 years, she explained, it is "a completely different relationship to the kindness and outpouring of positivity." She called the feeling "so warm."
Hudson is an American actress and singer-songwriter, and she was born into one of Hollywood's most recognizable families. How does the child of a famous actress skip college and still build a name of her own? Why did praise and mockery both follow the same career? And what else was she building away from the camera?
Kate Garry Hudson was born in Los Angeles on the 19th of April 1979. Her mother was the actress Goldie Hawn. Her father, Bill Hudson, worked as an actor, comedian and musician. The marriage ended when Kate was 18 months old. She and her older brother, the actor Oliver Hudson, grew up in Snowmass, Colorado, and later in Pacific Palisades, California.
Bill Hudson, her biological father, is the subject of one of her bluntest remarks. She has said he "doesn't know me from a hole in the wall." She regards Kurt Russell, her mother's longtime boyfriend and also an actor, as her father. About her mother she has been warm, calling her "the woman that I've learned the most from." She added that her mother "has conducted her life in a way that I can look up to."
Four half-siblings complete the family picture. Emily and Zachary Hudson come from her father's later marriage to the actress Cindy Williams. Lalania Hudson comes from his relationship with another woman. Wyatt Russell, an actor, is the son of her mother and Kurt Russell.
Her paternal grandmother supplied an Italian strand of ancestry, and her maternal grandmother a Hungarian Jewish one. The rest is a mix of English and some German. Hudson was raised Jewish, and like her mother she also practices Buddhism.
In 1997 she graduated from Crossroads, a college preparatory school in Santa Monica. New York University accepted her. She turned the place down and chose to pursue acting instead of an undergraduate degree. Her first screen credit, an episode of the television drama Party of Five, had already aired in 1996.
At age 11, Hudson performed on stage at the Santa Monica Playhouse. Her film debut came with the drama Desert Blue in 1998, followed by the romantic comedy 200 Cigarettes in 1999. Three more films reached audiences in 2000: the thriller Gossip, the comedy Dr. T & the Women and the romantic comedy About Adam.
Also in 2000 came Almost Famous, Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical film about the rock world. Hudson played Penny Lane, a veteran groupie. Crowe said she "hung in and had turned down leads in other movies just to play the part." In his telling, she won it "because of her loyalty."
The honors followed quickly. At the 58th Golden Globe Awards she won Best Supporting Actress. At the 73rd Academy Awards she was nominated in the same category. Years later, Entertainment Weekly placed the film on its end-of-the-decade best-of list. The magazine described it as a "power ballad of a movie" and singled out "Kate Hudson's incomparable Penny Lane."
Hudson worked hard to keep her famous parents out of the story. She did not want to be seen as someone who "rode on somebody's coattails." Throughout the 2000s she would star in a long run of romantic comedies.
The Four Feathers, a 2002 remake of a historical romance, cast Hudson as the fiancée of a young British officer played by Heath Ledger. It was a critical and commercial failure. Her next film changed the picture.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days arrived in 2003 and paired her with Matthew McConaughey. She played a women's magazine writer who dates a man for an article and tries to drive him away using only the "classic mistakes women make." Reviews were mixed. Critics praised Hudson and her chemistry with McConaughey, and the film was a box office success.
Le Divorce, also from 2003, put her opposite Naomi Watts as sisters caught in a dispute over a painting by Georges de La Tour. Entertainment Weekly gave it a "C" and judged that the two had no chemistry as sisters. She then made Alex & Emma in 2003 and Raising Helen in 2004, which met with varying degrees of success.
The Skeleton Key, released in 2005, made her a young hospice nurse at a New Orleans plantation home tangled in a supernatural mystery. The Washington Post said she dialed back her charm to convey "a fearless bullheadedness." The film grossed over US$91.9 million worldwide, with US$47.9 million of that in North America.
You, Me and Dupree followed in 2006, with Owen Wilson and Matt Dillon. Hudson played half of a couple who let an unemployed friend move in. It was a box office success, and Universal Pictures' distributor research named her an important reason audiences chose to see it.
In 2007 she directed Cutlass, a short film for Glamour magazine's "Reel Moments" series, which was based on readers' personal essays. Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning, Virginia Madsen, Chevy Chase and Kristen Stewart starred in it.
Fool's Gold, in 2008, reunited her with McConaughey. For the underwater scenes she earned a scuba certification in the Great Barrier Reef. Reviews were generally negative, but the film grossed US$111.2 million worldwide. My Best Friend's Girl, with Jason Biggs, fared similarly that year. Together the two films earned her a single Golden Raspberry nomination.
Bride Wars, from 2009, set her against Anne Hathaway as best friends turned rivals over a shared wedding date. Time named it among the 10 worst chick flicks of all time in 2010, yet it grossed US$114.6 million globally.
The musical Nine, directed by Rob Marshall, brought her alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench. She played a Vogue fashion journalist. Critics acclaimed the film and praised her dancing in a 1960s-inspired original piece called "Cinema Italiano," written specifically for her character.
The Killer Inside Me premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Hudson played the wife of a West Texas serial killer, alongside Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba. In 2011 she made two romantic comedies. A Little Bit of Heaven found only a limited release in theaters. Something Borrowed, based on Emily Giffin's novel, was a moderate commercial success.
The Detroit News was unkind to the second of those films. Its review said Hudson "looks exhausted," as if she were as tired of the material as the audience.
Television offered a change of pace in 2012, when Hudson joined the Fox teen comedy Glee. She played Cassandra July, a dance teacher at the fictitious New York Academy of the Dramatic Arts, in a recurring role.
The Reluctant Fundamentalist, in 2013, cast her as a photographer dating a professor at the University of Lahore. In 2014 came the comedy Wish I Was Here and the thriller Good People. All three films received limited releases and mixed reviews.
Rock the Kasbah, from 2015, had a budget of US$15 million. Hudson played a top-hatted hooker with a heart of gold who befriends Bill Murray's has-been manager in Afghanistan. It earned only US$3 million at the North American box office.
Kung Fu Panda 3 reversed that fortune in 2016. Hudson voiced a ribbon-dancing panda, and the DreamWorks Animation film grossed US$521.1 million globally, making it her most widely seen. Mother's Day, directed by Garry Marshall and starring Julia Roberts, was panned by critics but did moderately well commercially.
Deepwater Horizon, also in 2016, cast her as the wife of a chief electronics technician played by Mark Wahlberg. Reviews were positive. Still, it earned US$121.8 million against a budget of around US$110 million, making it only slightly profitable.
In Marshall, released in 2017, Hudson portrayed an employer who accuses her black chauffeur of rape. Critics responded well, but the film reached only a limited audience in theaters.
Fabletics, a line of workout clothes and active wear, launched in 2013 through a partnership with the online fashion retailer TechStyle Fashion Group. It now operates 25 stores in the United States. The venture took over her attention. In a 2018 interview she said, "I work more on Fabletics now than I do on movies."
Her first book, Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body, appeared in 2016. A second, Pretty Fun: Creating and Celebrating a Lifetime of Tradition, followed in 2017.
In August 2018 she and New York & Company announced a multi-year deal. She would serve as ambassador for the retailer's US$200-million Soho Jeans collection and develop her own fashion line. That same year she teamed with her mother on a capsule collection. Half of the net proceeds would support MindUP, a program within the Goldie Hawn Foundation.
King St. Vodka, made in California, launched in November 2019. Hudson also started a podcast, Sibling Revelry, with her brother Oliver. When the two promoted it on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2022, they were described as "playfully bickering."
On the 31st of December 2000, Hudson married Chris Robinson, lead singer of the Black Crowes, in Aspen, Colorado. Their son was born in January 2004. They announced their separation in August 2006, and Robinson filed for divorce that November, citing irreconcilable differences. It was finalized on the 22nd of October 2007.
Matt LeBlanc came earlier. She dated the actor for at least a year beginning in 1995. Matt Bellamy, lead vocalist and guitarist of Muse, came later. They began dating in 2010 and became engaged in April 2011, three months before their son was born. They split in 2014 and remain on good terms.
Danny Fujikawa, a musician, actor and co-owner of a record company, entered her life in December 2016. They met through her best friends, Sara and Erin Foster, who are his stepsisters. Their daughter was born in October 2018, and they announced their engagement in September 2021.
Adam Levine, the American musician, has been her friend since they were teenagers attending different high schools.
In 2006 Hudson sued the British version of National Enquirer after it reported she had an eating disorder and called her "painfully thin." She called the claim "a blatant lie." She worried about what a false report could do to impressionable young women. The newspaper apologized and compensated her.
In 2016 she credited Transcendental Meditation as "the most helpful and life-changing thing for me." She said she meditates 20 minutes in the morning and tries for another 20 in the afternoon.
Music, a 2021 musical drama co-written and directed by Sia, gave Hudson the role of Kazu Gamble. The part brought her second Golden Globe nomination. It also brought a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress, while Sia took Worst Director. That same year she starred in Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon, a fantasy thriller by writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour.
In 2022 she appeared opposite Michael Shannon in A Little White Lie, directed by Michael Maren. She also played Birdie Jay in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, a Manhattan supermodel turned fashion designer caught in a murder mystery. On television she starred in the thriller series Truth Be Told that year.
January 2024 brought a record deal with Virgin Music Group and a debut single, "Talk About Love." She wrote it with her fiancee Danny Fujikawa and Linda Perry. "Live Forever" arrived on the 28th of March 2024, and Rolling Stone called it "a love letter to parents." "Gonna Find Out" followed on the 17th of April. Her debut studio album, Glorious, was released on the 17th of May 2024. On the 28th of August 2024 she put out a cover of the 1985 'Til Tuesday single "Voices Carry."
Song Sung Blue, in 2025, cast her as Claire Sardina opposite Hugh Jackman. It earned her Lead Actress nominations for the Academy Award, the Actor Award, the BAFTA Award and the Golden Globe. Clayton Davis of Variety called the performance "a revelatory piece of acting that announces itself, just like the full-throated power of a Neil Diamond chorus."
Running Point, a comedy series in which she plays Isla Gordon, began in 2025 and is ongoing. That year she also served as an advisor for Team Adam on the 27th season of The Voice. Her filmography lists one more title, Hello & Paris, as filming for a 2027 release.
