Dave Filoni began writing short stories about Jedi characters while traveling to work on The Mandalorian between 2019 and 2023. Carrie Beck, senior vice president of development and production at Lucasfilm, asked if he wanted to turn these ideas into a full series.
The logo for Tales of the Jedi appeared on holiday gifts distributed to Lucasfilm employees in December 2021. Filoni discussed the project in a dedicated panel at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in May 2022.
Filoni revealed that the anthology would consist of six shorts with five written by himself and one co-written by Charles Murray and Élan Murray. Each short runs approximately fifteen minutes long.
Liam Neeson reprised his role as Qui-Gon Jinn while his son Micheál Richardson voiced a younger version of the character. Matt Lanter returned as Anakin Skywalker from The Clone Wars and Ashley Eckstein continued voicing Ahsoka Tano following her work on previous series.
Cinematography and effects lead Joel Aron collaborated with animation provider CGCG Inc to push the limits of their production sandbox. Aron chose to change the lensing style to anamorphic wide-screen format used in live-action films like American Graffiti released in 1973.
