Silk (character)
Silk, the Marvel Comics superhero whose civilian name is Cindy Moon, first appeared in April 2014 without a face. She showed up as a faceless cameo in The Amazing Spider-Man #1, created by writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos. Several more faceless appearances followed across the first story arc of that series. Readers saw a costumed figure but never learned who she was. Why would a new hero be hidden in plain sight? How could she share Spider-Man's origin and still remain unknown to him? And what happens to a young woman when she steps back into a world that kept moving without her? The answers begin with a science exhibit, a dying spider, and a locked door.
At a science exhibit demonstrating radioactive rays, a spider was accidentally exposed to a huge dose of radiation. In its dying moments it bit teenage student Peter Parker, who gained the powers that made him Spider-Man. Moments afterward, the same spider bit a second student, Cindy Moon. She is the daughter of scientists Albert Moon Sr. and Nari Moon, and the sister of Albert Moon Jr. Her abilities appeared quickly, but she could not control them. A man named Ezekiel Sims approached the Moon family and offered to guide her. After six years of training, Ezekiel and his ally Tamara Pearson locked Cindy inside a facility. Their reason was protection. Morlun and his family, called the Inheritors, were hunting spiders like her.
Her powers resemble Peter Parker's. She has superhuman strength, speed, durability, reflexes and equilibrium, and she can cling to most surfaces. Unlike Peter, she produces organic webbing, shot from her fingertips. When they first met, Peter noticed that she was faster than he was, though not as strong. Her version of the spider-sense is called Silk Sense, and it is far stronger than his. She also has an eidetic memory. Morlun and the Inheritors, the very enemies that put her away, would shape her story again and again.
Seven years later, during the Original Sin storyline, Spider-Man was hit by energy from the Watcher's eye. It gave him a vision of the radioactive spider biting Cindy as well. He set out to find her. When he reached the facility, Cindy attacked him in a rage and told him he had doomed them all. He calmed her by telling her Morlun was dead. She walked out to see New York for the first time in years, pausing only to sew a costume from her own webbing. She told him to call her Silk. Her next stop brought heartbreak, because her family had moved away.
Peter and Silk discovered a strong mutual attraction, which the story ties to their shared spider-sense. They kissed. Peter pulled back the moment she began to lift his mask. Soon afterward they were at the Fact Channel news station, where Black Cat and Electro attacked them. Silk dodged Electro's lightning easily, but Spider-Man was paralyzed. Black Cat began unmasking him on live television. J. Jonah Jameson, crowding the camera, accidentally blocked the shot. Silk spun Peter a temporary mask and carried him away.
At the waterfront, where Parker Industries planned to demonstrate a device meant to cure Electro, she spun Peter insulated webbing. Black Cat sabotaged the machine, and Electro struck a helicopter. Silk caught it as it fell, then sealed Electro's energy blast inside an insulated web-pod. Electro lost his powers and Black Cat vanished. Cindy then got a job at the Fact Channel, planning to use its information center to find her family. Before she could make progress, the Inheritors came for every spider across reality.
Old Man Spider-Man of Earth-4 told Silk to stay behind. She followed anyway, and he was furious when they reached Earth-928. The crossing came after a battle at Spider-Island against Looter and his henchmen, joined by Spider-Woman, Spider-Anya, Spider-Man 2099 and other spider-themed heroes. When Daemos was killed, Superior Spider-Man blamed Silk, and he suggested they kill her. Then Brix, Bora and a Daemos clone arrived and killed Old Man Spider-Man. Silk took Spider-Man's portal device, hoping to repair the damage she felt responsible for, and the portal she opened drew the Inheritors' attention.
Spider-Woman volunteered to follow her, and Superior Spider-Man sent Spider-Man Noir along. After the Spider-Man of Earth-90214 was badly hurt, Silk and Spider-Woman took him home to recover. Spider-Gwen and Spider-Girl, who is Anya Corazon, were assigned to watch Silk. She ran off alone with Brix and Bora close behind. Her teleporter broke, and the Inheritor twins surrounded her, so she fled into Earth-001. There she found Jessica Drew from Earth-616 impersonating that world's Jessica.
A second escape landed her on Earth-3145, a world wrecked by thermonuclear war. The Inheritors cannot attack there because radiation harms them. Silk built a web-suit to shield herself and met that world's spider totem, Ben Parker, in a nuclear bunker beneath the Sims building. She sent clues to the other spiders about the safe zone, then returned to Earth-001 to save Jessica and was captured. She turned out to be The Bride, one of three key totems. During the final sacrifice, the Spider Army stopped the Inheritors and rescued her. After the Grand Weaver died, Superior Spider-Man became the new Weaver. Silk, Jessica and Spider-Man returned to Earth-616, and Cindy still had no idea where her parents were.
Back in New York, Silk made her old bunker her base of operations and kept working as a Fact Channel intern. Her family seemed to have no official records, apart from a few old files. In her old neighborhood she met her high school boyfriend, who was now engaged. Two mysterious figures watched her whenever she was in the bunker. She fought a costumed villain called Dragonclaw again and again, and sometimes Black Cat. Peter, worried about her, asked the Fantastic Four to examine her. She was annoyed to learn he had told them her whole history. The checkup found her physically fine but struggling with anxiety, and she was referred to a therapist.
During Secret Wars, she defeated Dragonclaw and learned he owed a debt to Black Cat. To escape Black Cat's gang, Silk cut her own hair. Jameson found out what she was searching for, and in the final incursion between Earth-616 and Earth-1610 he handed her a case file on a boy who seemed to be her brother. She found him as the world was ending. She told him: "I'm sorry. For everything. And I love you, Albert. I love you." Afterward she learned that Albert had been infused with Goblin Formula and had no memory of what happened to their parents.
Her ex-boyfriend Hector had died while she was locked away, when a neighbor tried to summon a demon in his apartment block. He lingered as a ghost named Spectro. Her colleagues Rafferty and Lola learned her secret, and the trio followed a lead to an abandoned lab of Dr. Kapoor. It was a trap set by a villain named Fang. The lab held a doorway to the Negative Zone, where they befriended a medieval dragon named David and helped the Red Knight fight the Ash King. The Red Knight was Cindy's mother, Nari. Cindy's father, Albert Moon Sr., had been the Ash King's prisoner. Both had come to the Zone to find a blue substance for an antidote that would remove Cindy's powers and end the Inheritor threat. Unknown to Cindy, her father kept the substance and delivered it to Fang.
During the Clone Conspiracy event, Cindy went to San Francisco with Hector to investigate New U Technologies. She built a disguise costume, and Hector jokingly called her Silkworm, which annoyed her. She found Jameson speaking with his formerly deceased wife, Marla, and fought the resurrected Spider-Woman, Mattie Franklin. When the Carrion virus spread worldwide, Silk held a door against infected hosts while Mattie saved her. Marla and Mattie were left reduced to dust. Cindy quit the Fact Channel and enrolled in the S.H.I.E.L.D. academy. Using its technology, she exposed Fang's real plan, which was to steal Cindy's powers and take over the Spider Society. Silk defeated Fang with Hector's help, and her father accepted her as she was.
Flushing, Queens, hosted a fundraiser where Silk joined other Asian American heroes: Amadeus Cho, Shang-Chi, Ms. Marvel, Jimmy Woo and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jake Oh. Later that night in Koreatown, Manhattan, Prince Regent Phalkan and his small army from Seknarf Seven ambushed them. Everyone nearby was teleported toward Seknarf Seven, and Phalkan demanded a few captives to eat within a time limit. The heroes called themselves The Protectors and rallied the bystanders to escape. The Alpha Flight Space Program arrived, and Phalkan was exiled from his planet for treason.
In the Go Down Swinging storyline, Silk and Miles Morales helped Spider-Man fight the Red Goblin, a Green Goblin possessed by the Carnage symbiote. All three were hurt, and Flash Thompson saved them.
After a demonstration at Jimmy Woo's Pan-Asian School for the Unusually Gifted in Mumbai, Jimmy invited Silk and the Protectors to join his Agents of Atlas. News of Malekith's invasion of Earth interrupted them. In Seoul, Silk helped defend the city from Queen Sindr and her Fire Goblin forces. She recognized the Korean hero Luna Snow right away, because she was a big fan. Sindr threatened to summon a volcano over the city. Brawn teleported the team away, and Sindr annexed South Korea without a fight. Shang-Chi trained the team in Northern China. Silk used her webbing to free the captured Brawn. Pele, revealed as the Atlas Android M-41 Zu, and the Monkey King sacrificed themselves, and the heroes later helped Captain Marvel finish Sindr's forces at the Great Wall of China.
A merged city called Pan then appeared, made from Asian and Pacific cities linked by portals. Its founder, Mike Nguyen of the Big Nguyen Company, offered the team jobs as protectors. Amadeus refused and grew suspicious. The team found a sea serpent imprisoned in Nguyen's lab, its scales harvested to power the portals. The serpent came from Atlantis, so Namor invaded. Jimmy Woo then revealed that ancient dragons advise human rulers. His own advisor was Mr. Lao. According to him, dragons use humans as proxies in their conflicts and are responsible for almost every major war in history.
Nguyen proposed uniting the world under Pan by harvesting the dragons' power. When the Agents confronted him, he fitted Amadeus with a Sirena implant that turned him into the Hulk under Nguyen's control. The team freed Amadeus, but the Hulk's energy had raised a tsunami aimed at the Heart of Pan. Silk led citizens to shelter while Brawn and Namor weakened the wave. Nguyen died protecting a Madripoorian refugee and her young son. Amadeus quit the team afterward but told Silk his comm would stay open to her.
Earth-65 has its own Cindy Moon, and she is a villain. In Spider-Women, she heads a spy organization called S.I.L.K. and is the romantic partner of Matt Murdock, who is Kingpin there. A teacher swatted her spider with a newspaper, so she never got bitten. Disappointed with her life, she joined S.H.I.E.L.D. as a spider researcher. Her work saved Jesse Drew's life and gave him spider powers. She later took the altered spider back and released it, and it bit Gwen Stacy. In Spider-Women, she used stolen technology to strip Gwen of her powers and frame the Earth-616 Silk. Jessica Drew, Gwen and the 616 Silk defeated her. S.H.I.E.L.D. locked her up, and her counterpart mocked her by mailing a care package of her bunker belongings.
On Earth-71490, the roles flip. There, Cindy's brother Albert is Silk, and he spars flirtatiously with Web Weaver. Both of them were infected by a symbiote called V-Star that killed their parents, and they were studied in a bunker for nearly a decade. Cindy absorbed more of the symbiote until it merged with her, and she returned as V-Star to hunt the scientists responsible. In the manga Spider-Man: Fake Red, Cindy is the best friend and partner of the missing Peter Parker, with an intense crush on him. She guides Yu Onomae, who has taken over Peter's suit.
Later storylines kept reshaping her. In Threats & Menaces, she becomes a reporter under Jameson while investigating who is killing gangsters in Queens. In Age of the Witch, she faces an ancient witch who drains young people's life force using Korean magic and targets her because of her Korean heritage. In End of the Spider-Verse, reality rewrites her as the Spider-Woman of Earth-616 after Spider-Man vanishes, with Dr. Peter Parker as her best friend and crush. In Nightmare Boulevard, she is trapped in a dream world as a detective, an outlaw and a pirate, with Wong helping from outside. In All-New Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider, a new fake history for Gwen turns Cindy into a supporting character who joins Gwen's band and lands in a hospital.
Silk made her full debut in The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 3 #4 in July 2014, tied into Original Sin. Her first ongoing title launched in February 2015, written by Robbie Thompson, who also wrote for the television show Supernatural, with art by Stacey Lee. That volume ended during Secret Wars. A second volume followed and concluded with issue #19. She also joined the new Agents of Atlas, which debuted in a War of the Realms tie-in and then earned a five-issue limited series.
A third series, from writer Maurene Goo and artist Takeshi Miyazawa, was set for July 2020 but was withheld because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It arrived in March 2021 as a five-issue limited series. Emily Kim wrote a fourth series in January 2022 with Miyazawa returning. A fifth began in May 2023 with Kim and artist Ig Guara.
On screen, Tiffany Espensen plays Cindy Moon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She first appears in Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017 as a classmate of Peter Parker and a decathlon team member. She cameos in Avengers: Infinity War in 2018. She turns up in the post-credits scene of the extended edition of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, built from archive footage from Homecoming. Sony Pictures once developed a Silk film, which was reworked into a television series called Silk: Spider Society. MGM+ and Amazon ordered it in November 2022 under showrunner Angela Kang. Amazon dropped it in May 2024, and Sony began shopping it elsewhere. The filmmakers of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse considered her but chose Peni Parker.
She is an unlockable playable character in games including Spider-Man Unlimited, Marvel Future Fight, Marvel Contest of Champions and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2. In Marvel Avengers Academy, she is voiced by Victoria Wong. She also has a non-speaking cameo in the post-credits scene of Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Figures exist in HeroClix and in the Marvel Legends line. In 2017, Gizmodo ranked her third on its list of the greatest Spider-Women of all time. Her next screen appearance is planned for Spider-Woman, the Gwen Stacy solo film set in the Spider-Verse franchise.
