Peter Parker (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Peter Benjamin Parker, better known as Spider-Man, was born on the 10th of August 2001 in Forest Hills, Queens. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland plays him across six films. After the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter is raised mostly by his Aunt May. In 2015, while a student at the Midtown School of Science and Technology, he is bitten by a radioactive spider and gains superhuman abilities. He uses those powers to fight crime, and he hides his identity so that his enemies cannot reach his friends and family. Other actors wore the mask before Holland, yet his is the Peter who joins the Avengers. How did a hero whose film rights belong to a rival studio end up in this universe? Who was chosen to play him? And what does it cost a teenager to carry a secret identity, a famous mentor's legacy and a city that suddenly knows his name?
In November 2014, a hack of Sony Pictures computers spilled private emails onto the internet. Among them was an exchange between co-chairman Amy Pascal and president Doug Belgrad. It said that Marvel Studios wanted Spider-Man for Captain America: Civil War, but that talks between the two studios were believed to have broken down. Sony holds the film rights to the character under license, which is why the studios needed each other at all. By February 2015, they had reached a licensing deal anyway. Sony would keep ownership, financing, distribution and final creative control over the Spider-Man films.
In April 2015, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained that Civil War would skip the origin story. Two earlier film series had already told it, so Marvel would assume audiences knew the details. He added that Marvel had been working to include the character since at least October 2014. By the following June, he clarified that the deal did not let Spider-Man appear in any MCU television series.
The first nod to the character came at the end of Ant-Man in 2015, according to its director Peyton Reed. A reporter is chasing Sam Wilson, who is looking for Ant-Man, and complains that there is too much going on. He mentions "a guy who crawls up the walls" and tells Wilson to be more specific.
Sony, meanwhile, began its search for an actor younger than Andrew Garfield. Logan Lerman and Dylan O'Brien were reported as front-runners. By April 2015, the list had changed to Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, Timothée Chalamet and Liam James, with Holland and Butterfield ahead. A search of more than 1,500 actors produced six screen testers: Butterfield, Holland, Judah Lewis, Matt Lintz, Charlie Plummer and Charlie Rowe. Each read opposite Robert Downey Jr., who plays Tony Stark, so the studios could judge chemistry. Feige, Pascal and the Russo brothers, who directed Civil War, watched the tests. Feige and Pascal narrowed the field to Holland and Rowe, who tested with Downey again. Holland also tested with Chris Evans, who plays Steve Rogers, and emerged as the favorite. On the 23rd of June, Marvel and Sony announced that Holland would star in Spider-Man: Homecoming, released in 2017. The Russos had pushed for an actor close to Peter's age, and they praised Holland's background in dancing and gymnastics.
The partnership nearly ended in August 2019. Under the original terms, Marvel and Feige produced the Spider-Man films for Sony and received 5% of their revenue. Sony wanted more films on the same terms. Disney worried about Feige's workload and asked for a 25-50% stake in any future films. Unable to agree, Sony announced that it would move ahead without Feige or Marvel. Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra said the character would be folded into Sony's own shared universe.
Then Holland spoke personally with Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony's Tom Rothman, which partly brought the companies back to the table. In late September, they announced a new agreement for Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Marvel Studios, Feige and Amy Pascal producing. Disney reportedly co-financed 25% of the film in exchange for 25% of its profit, and it kept the merchandising rights. The deal also let Holland's Spider-Man cross over into Sony's universe, an exchange described as "a 'call and answer' between the two franchises." That exchange had already started in a small way. Holland had filmed a cameo as Peter Parker for Venom in 2018, before Marvel Studios asked Sony to exclude it.
A scene in Iron Man 2 shows a young boy in a child's Iron Man mask, targeted by Justin Hammer's drones until Tony Stark rescues him. Max Favreau, the son of director Jon Favreau, plays the boy. In 2017, Watts said he had suggested to Feige that the child be established as young Peter, and Holland supported the idea. No film or series has confirmed it. Peter's official biography does place a rescue by Iron Man in his childhood, and it deepened his admiration for the hero.
In 2016, Stark turns up at Peter's apartment in Queens and reveals that he knows Peter is Spider-Man. He recruits Peter to his side of the conflict with Steve Rogers and sends him to Germany. There, Peter receives a new suit designed by Stark and joins Stark's faction at the Leipzig/Halle airport. Peter is a fan of Rogers even while opposing him, and Rogers respects the younger man's bravery. During the fight, they briefly compare which part of New York they come from. Peter helps incapacitate Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson, and he helps bring down a giant Scott Lang. Anthony Russo said that Peter had little political investment in the conflict. His choice came from "a very personal relationship" with Stark.
Two months later, Peter is back in Queens, texting Happy Hogan, Stark's driver and bodyguard, in the hope of a new mission. Instead he stumbles into the operation of Adrian Toomes, whose crew sells weapons built from Chitauri technology. A malfunctioning weapon tears the Staten Island Ferry in half, and Stark arrives to save the passengers. Stark confiscates Peter's suit as punishment for his recklessness. Peter then discovers that Toomes is the father of Liz, the senior he has a crush on. He still goes after Toomes, and when the Vulture suit fails, Peter saves his life. Stark later congratulates him and offers him a place in the Avengers, showing off the new Iron Spider armor. Peter declines, preferring local work in Queens. When Stark returns the old suit, May finds out that her nephew is Spider-Man.
In 2018, on a field trip, Peter spots the Q-Ship above New York City and slips off the school bus. He follows Ebony Maw, who has captured Stephen Strange, to a spaceship. Stark flies into space after him and sends the Iron Spider armor, then officially declares Peter an Avenger. On the planet Titan, they meet members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and all of them turn on Thanos together. Thanos wins, and half of all life, Peter included, disintegrates in the Blip.
Some critics disliked how much this Peter leans on Stark. Several of his suits are designed by Stark or built with Stark Industries technology. In the comics, Peter built most of his own suits, and Stark made only the Iron Spider armor. The paternal bond was partly adapted from the Civil War comic series and its three-issue prelude in The Amazing Spider-Man by J. Michael Straczynski. In the Ultimate Marvel Universe, the two share a trainer-trainee relationship.
In 2023, Peter is restored to life and carried through a portal to the destroyed Avengers Compound. He helps the Avengers and their allies against an alternate 2014 Thanos. Stark sacrifices his life to save the universe, and Peter attends the funeral. Then he returns to high school and shares a heartfelt reunion with his best friend, Ned Leeds.
Eight months after Stark's funeral, in mid-2024, Peter attends a charity event that May is organizing, and he arrives as Spider-Man. He leaves abruptly. He is still reeling from Stark's death, and the crowd bombards him with questions. He decides to take a break from vigilantism and joins a school trip to Europe with Ned and other classmates. He plans to tell a classmate, Michelle "MJ" Jones, that he has feelings for her.
In Venice, a water monster attacks the class, and a man named Quentin Beck saves them. Nick Fury, whose calls Peter has been dodging, then approaches him. Fury appoints Beck as Peter's teammate against the "Elementals," element-based monsters appearing across Europe. He also hands Peter E.D.I.T.H., an artificial intelligence that Stark built to pass to Peter. After defeating the Fire Elemental in Prague, Peter decides he "isn't ready to be the next Iron Man." He gives E.D.I.T.H. to Beck. Peter does not know that Beck is a former employee of Stark's with a grudge.
On a walk with MJ, Peter confesses his attraction and accidentally reveals that he is Spider-Man. Together they discover that Beck used holographic projectors to fake the Elementals. Peter travels to Berlin to warn Fury. Beck catches on and traps Peter in a series of illusions. Impersonating Fury, Beck tricks Peter into naming the students who know his fraud.
A train hits Peter, and Beck leaves him for dead in the Netherlands. Peter calls Hogan and builds himself a new suit from Stark's technology before heading to London. There Beck has assembled one giant Elemental from Stark Industries drones. Ned and MJ evacuate the students and fight alongside Hogan while Peter destroys the drones. Beck tries to kill Peter with them, but Peter manages to make a drone shoot Beck, who begins to bleed. Peter takes back E.D.I.T.H., disables the drones, and Beck seemingly dies. Back in New York, Peter and MJ plan a date for the following week.
While swinging through the city, Peter and MJ see a broadcast by J. Jonah Jameson on TheDailyBugle.net. It shows an edited video of Beck blaming Peter for the London attack and exposing him as Spider-Man. Damage Control interrogates Peter, MJ, Ned and May. Lawyer Matt Murdock helps get the murder charges dropped. Still, the friends endure bad publicity from Jameson and from Beck's supporters. Ned and MJ are rejected by MIT in light of the controversy. Peter and May move into Hogan's apartment for safety, and Peter goes to the New York Sanctum to ask Stephen Strange for help.
Strange tries to cast a spell that would make everyone forget Peter is Spider-Man, despite warnings from Wong. Peter repeatedly tampers with it. The corrupted spell summons people from other universes who know Spider-Man's identity, and it breaks the multiverse open. Otto Octavius attacks Peter while the Green Goblin looms nearby. Peter, MJ and Ned hunt down the visitors, finding Max Dillon and Flint Marko. Peter retrieves Norman Osborn from a F.E.A.S.T. building. He learns that Osborn, Dillon and Octavius were all pulled from their worlds just before their deaths. Peter refuses to send them home to die. He traps Strange in the Mirror Dimension, steals the spell, takes the villains to Hogan's apartment, and cures Octavius.
The Goblin persona takes control of Osborn and persuades the uncured villains to turn on Peter. In the fight, the Goblin fatally wounds May. Before she dies, she tells Peter that "with great power, there must also come great responsibility." Guilt crushes him, and Jameson's reporting makes it worse. He is ready to give up and send the villains to their deaths. His friends comfort him, and then he meets two alternate versions of himself. The three are nicknamed Peter-One, Peter-Two and Peter-Three.
Peter-Two is Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, living years after Spider-Man 3 (2007). His relationship with Mary Jane Watson has worked out despite past trouble. Peter-Three is Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, living years after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). He failed to save Gwen Stacy, and the loss made him bitter and vengeful toward criminals. Both share stories of losing loved ones, and both urge Peter-One to fight in May's honor.
The three develop cures and lure the Lizard, Dillon and Marko to the Statue of Liberty, where the villains are cured. The Goblin appears and releases the contained spell. An enraged Peter-One tries to kill him, but Peter-Two stops him, reminding him that revenge would not honor May. The Goblin stabs Peter-Two in the back. Meanwhile, MJ falls from the scaffolding and Peter-Three catches her, which gives him closure over Gwen. Peter-One and Peter-Three then inject the Goblin with the cure, ending Osborn's Goblin persona.
Peter-One realizes that the only way to protect the multiverse is to erase himself from everyone's memory. He asks Strange to cast the spell and promises MJ and Ned that he will find them again. He and MJ share a passionate kiss. The spell is cast, and the visitors return to their universes. A few weeks later, Peter visits MJ and Ned to reintroduce himself but decides against it. At May's grave, Hogan's words inspire him to carry on. He chooses to keep his distance from allies and fellow heroes, and he also learns whom not to trust, including Jameson and the DODC. He drops out of school, moves into a new apartment and starts studying for his GED.
The fifteenth and final issue of the anthology series Amazing Fantasy, published in August 1962, introduced Spider-Man. Marvel editor and head writer Stan Lee wrote it, and artist Steve Ditko drew it. Lee wanted a hero whom teenagers could identify with. He drew on the pulp magazine crime fighter the Spider, and he also took inspiration from watching a spider climb a wall. The character grew popular during the 1960s. Between 2002 and 2014, Sony Pictures released five Spider-Man films. Tobey Maguire starred in three directed by Sam Raimi, and Andrew Garfield starred in two directed by Marc Webb.
Holland's films are built on deliberate omissions. Feige said that Peter would be torn between superhero ideologies. He called these tensions the same ones that Lee and Ditko explored in the first ten years of the comics. The Russo brothers wanted a more grounded and naturalistic approach than earlier film versions took.
The MCU films never dramatize Peter's origin, and Uncle Ben appears only indirectly. During the making of Homecoming, the writers discussed showing that Peter's wardrobe was Ben's old clothing. They dropped the idea because it pulled away from Peter's own arc and made Ben's death feel like a "throwaway line." The one exception is the animated What If...? episode "What If... Zombies?!", where an alternate Peter lists everyone who has died in his life.
Gwen Stacy does not exist in this world. Peter instead falls for MJ, played by Zendaya, after his earlier crush Liz moves away. MJ is an original character, but Homecoming co-screenwriter John Francis Daley said she was meant as a reinvention of Mary Jane Watson, with the nickname as an homage. Peter's friend from the comics, Harry Osborn, is absent, along with his father Norman and the company Oscorp. In No Way Home, Norman from Raimi's trilogy tells May that these Osborns do not exist here. Ned Leeds, who is the Hobgoblin in the comics, is here a loyal friend.
Joe Russo described the suit in Civil War as "a slightly more traditional, Steve Ditko influenced suit." The film explored how it works, particularly its mechanical eyes. Peter's first homemade suit is a red and blue hoodie with web-shooters. The upgraded Stark-built version, used mainly in Homecoming, packs a remote drone on the chest logo and an AI similar to J.A.R.V.I.S. It adds a holographic interface, a parachute, a heater, a tracking device for Stark, and a head-up display with augmented reality. Underarm webbing allows wingsuit flight. Stark also built in a "training wheels" protocol to limit Peter's access to its features.
Homecoming co-producer Eric Hauserman Carroll said Marvel went through the comics and pulled out all the fun and wacky things the suit once did. The web-shooters have settings for different sprays, such as a spinning web, a web ball and a ricochet web. Carroll compared this to a DSLR camera. Holland said he loves that the original web-shooters are "as real as they could be." He added that Garfield's web-shooters never made much sense to him.
Far From Home reuses the main suit and the Iron Spider armor, and it adds two new costumes. Nick Fury gives Peter a black stealth suit, which Marvel Studios' head of visual development, Ryan Meinerding, said grew from Watts' wish for a suit inspired by Spider-Man Noir. Meinerding compared other tactical comic costumes and felt they looked less practical. Peter wears the stealth suit to become the vigilante Night-Monkey, a "European rip-off of Spider-Man." A prison warden steals its mask in the Netherlands. Peter then designs a red-and-black suit for himself, which Meinerding originally imagined as made from Peter's own webbing, the strongest material available to him. A burglar throws paint on it, and the stain stays until May cleans it months later.
Ironhead Studio, which worked on The Amazing Spider-Man films, built the practical costumes. For Far From Home, it developed a skull cap with built-in fans so the goggles would not steam up. It also made a magnetic bellows system so the goggles could be removed easily but not fall off during action.
The Iron Spider armor, also known as Item 17A, is made of nanotechnology. Damage Control confiscates its charger in mid-2024, and Otto Octavius absorbs its nanites later that year. When he returns them, the red-and-black suit becomes the Integrated Suit. Peter wears that suit inside-out to beat Electro in No Way Home. A new suit sewn by Parker appears at the end of No Way Home and in Brand New Day. It is inspired by the early comics, and the screenplay says elements of Peter-Two and Peter-Three shaped its design. In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the first homemade suit is built from gym pants, sneakers, goggles, a blue sweatshirt and knee pads.
The suits also left the screen. Most major MCU suits appear in the 2018 game Spider-Man from Insomniac Games, where the Homecoming suit is called the "Stark Suit." The No Way Home suits are exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Windows version, Spider-Man Remastered (2020). Holland's Spider-Man and Zendaya's MJ can be bought as outfits in Fortnite. In Marvel Rivals (2024), the Iron Spider armor is an unlockable suit inspired by No Way Home.
When Homecoming reached critics, Sara Stewart of the New York Post gave Holland much of the credit, along with the "perfectly cast" Michael Keaton. Mike Ryan of Uproxx called it the best Spider-Man film yet, praising its younger, more optimistic Peter. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times liked the focus on school life. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times disagreed, calling the depiction of Peter "juvenile." For Far From Home, David Ehrlich argued that Peter does not change beyond becoming more confident, while Alonso Duralde praised the chemistry among Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon.
No Way Home earned the widest praise, especially for its multiverse. Don Kaye of Den of Geek wrote that it "channels the entire spectrum of Spider-Man movies while setting the character on a course all his own at last." John DeFore felt the multiversal mayhem addressed the "Iron Man-ification" that had made Holland's earlier films "least fun." Roeper wrote that Holland "remains the best of the cinematic Spider-Men." Awards lists followed. Holland appeared at the Golden Schmoes Awards in 2016 for Breakthrough Performance of the Year, and at the Empire Awards in 2017 for Best Male Newcomer. For No Way Home in 2022, the MTV Movie & TV Awards included categories such as Best Hero, Best Kiss and Best Fight.
The character spread into other worlds. Holland recalls a cameo in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) as a passerby at a train station who says "Hey, kid!" to Miles Morales. In Across the Spider-Verse (2023), Miguel O'Hara calls him "the little nerd back on Earth-199999," though co-director Kemp Powers said the line was a throwaway joke with no connection to the MCU. Holland also appears in the mid-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). There, Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote watch Jameson's broadcast accusing Peter of Mysterio's murder. Strange's second spell moves Adrian Toomes into Sony's universe in Morbius (2022). Sony's Spider-Man Universe focuses on supporting characters and the rogues gallery. Hudson Thames voices alternate Peters in What If...? (2021-2024), Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (2025-present) and Marvel Zombies (2025). Holland reprises the role in the attraction Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure in Avengers Campus.
Holland's own future was uncertain. In February 2021, he said No Way Home was the final film under his contract, though he hoped to continue. That October, he said it was being treated as "the end of a franchise" that began with Homecoming. By November, he felt he would have "done something wrong" if he were still playing the character in his thirties. He expressed interest in a film about Miles Morales. Pascal, however, said later that month that plans existed for another trilogy starring Holland. He returns in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), where Peter goes through an existential crisis after losing his identity as Peter Parker. The crisis begins fueling mutations such as organic webbing, a plotline believed to come from the comics' "Man-Spider" storyline and Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994).
