Black Cat (Marvel Comics)

  • Black Cat, the thief whose real name is Felicia Hardy, first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 in July 1979, yet she was never meant for that comic. Her creators had a different hero's book in mind when they dreamed her up. She arrived as an adversary of Spider-Man and then refused to stay in that box. Over the decades she has been a burglar, a lover, an ally and a menace, and she has lost and regained her powers several times. Why does a thief keep returning to the life of a hero she cannot quite trust? How did a cartoon about an unlucky cat grow into a character critics call A-list? And what does it cost a woman with no powers of her own to stand beside someone who has them?

  • In 1979, writer Marv Wolfman was searching for a female foil for Spider-Woman when he remembered a Tex Avery cartoon called "Bad Luck Blackie." In that short, a black cat brings misfortune to anyone who stands close to it. Wolfman built his new character around that curse. Artist Dave Cockrum designed her costume and her look.

Then Wolfman changed assignments inside Marvel and took over the writing of The Amazing Spider-Man. He brought his creation with him. He and Cockrum reworked her so heavily that the version planned for Spider-Woman shared only a name and a set of powers with the one who finally appeared.

A trace of the original plan survives at the bottom of the letters page in The Amazing Spider-Man #194. A thumbnail there shows the intended cover of Spider-Woman #9, dated December 1978, beside a rejected cover for the Spider-Man issue. Wolfman later said in an interview, "I didn't plan Black Cat to be in Spidey. I created her for Spider-Woman." He added, "I never even thought of Catwoman when I did her." Keith Pollard, then the regular penciller on the series, drew her first appearance.

The comparison to Catwoman never went away. Susana Polo of Polygon listed the overlaps. Both are cat burglars in black, skintight costumes, both have "cat" in their names, and both share an uneasy romance with a hero who dislikes their crimes. Polo called it a genuine case of convergent evolution and joked that it might simply be Felicia's bad luck to have been created second.

Before any of that could matter, the new thief needed a family, and the story of that family begins with her father.

  • Felicia Hardy was born in Queens, New York, to a father who told the world he was a traveling salesman. Walter Hardy was in fact a world-renowned cat burglar. Before his arrest he gave his daughter a lesson she never forgot. If she loved basketball, she should aim to become a player and never settle for being a cheerleader.

She first put on the Black Cat costume to break Walter out of prison. On that same night she met Spider-Man. Her father then died, and Felicia faked her own death. Trained in martial arts and acrobatics, she distrusted men, yet she felt a kinship with this solitary hero. He was the first man she felt she could trust, and she came to believe she loved him.

Spider-Man tried to repay that trust. He made every effort to have her criminal record expunged, but Felicia was placed in a mental institution and escaped. She joined him against the Maggia and earned conditional amnesty. Then she convinced him she had died again.

Her chance to prove herself came when she learned that the Kingpin held an immensely powerful detonator. The Owl wanted it to hold New York City hostage. Doctor Octopus wanted it to destroy the city outright. Felicia stole it first, shielded it from every party and handed it to Spider-Man. That made her the target of Doctor Octopus' revenge.

Spider-Man tore off the mechanical arms, but Doctor Octopus could still steer them by thought and pin her in place while his men opened fire. Spider-Man rushed her to a hospital, where surgeons worked on dozens of bullet and knife wounds. Watching them, Peter realized how much he cared for her. After she recovered, the two began a relationship, and he told her who he was.

Felicia struggled with what she found. She could not understand why Peter wanted a civilian life when he could simply be the man in the mask. Peter was hurt, though he stayed, because for once he did not have to hide Spider-Man from someone close to him.

One detail of her old career turned out to be pure stagecraft. The strange accidents that once seemed to follow her victims were really careful stunts and traps, but that was about to change.

  • After the shooting, Felicia feared that her lack of superpowers made her a liability. She dreaded that Spider-Man's urge to protect her would eventually get him killed. The Kingpin offered her a way out of that fear. He used a process like the one that created the Scorpion and the Human Fly, and he applied it to her as payback for a theft she had committed.

The gift gave her a psionic ability to affect probability fields. Under stress, anyone she saw as a threat became prone to freak accidents. Guns jammed or exploded, and people tripped over objects. Ashamed to be empowered by the Kingpin of crime, she hid the change from Peter. The luck proved infectious, and it began to jinx Spider-Man, which was exactly what the Kingpin wanted.

Spider-Man ended the relationship, feeling a wall of secrets between them. Felicia then began what the comics call a "Robin Hood crusade," stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Meanwhile Peter noticed his own luck going wrong and asked Doctor Strange to lift the hex. By altering the source of the curse, Strange changed her powers too.

The new Felicia had night vision, retractable talons in her fingertips and heightened strength, speed, agility and endurance. Soon afterward the mercenary known as the Foreigner sent his hitman Sabretooth after her, and Spider-Man saved her life. Years later, doctor Tramma restored her bad luck powers through cybernetics.

Her toolkit also came from other hands. The Tinkerer supplied earrings that interact with the balance centers of her brain, and contact lenses that let her see infrared and ultraviolet. Micro-servos in her costume boost her strength. Steel micro-filaments in her gloves condense into retractable claws when she flexes her fingers.

Her father contributed too. Walter Hardy designed a miniature grappling hook hidden in the fur of each glove, which lets her swing from buildings, though not quite as fast as Spider-Man. She practices Judo and Goju Ryu Karate and has the stamina of an Olympic-level acrobat. She is also a talented photographer, and Spider-Man admits that her pictures of him beat his own.

Those skills would soon be pointed at something other than rooftops, because the Foreigner was not finished with her.

  • Blaze, the Foreigner's hitman, fire-bombed her apartment, and Felicia moved in with Peter Parker. It looked like a reconciliation, but it was a ruse. Peter later learned she had secretly been in a relationship with the Foreigner. He overheard her on the phone with the Foreigner, discussing a plan to frame him for murder, and she slipped away before he could catch her.

The plan was more tangled than it seemed. She had deliberately lured Spider-Man to the Foreigner's apartment and started a fight between the two men. She later cleared Peter of the murder charge. Then she double-crossed them both, explaining her plan and her feelings in a letter and announcing that she had fled to Paris. The break pushed Peter toward Mary Jane Watson.

Years later she came back to America and learned from a chance clash with Venom that Peter had married Mary Jane. Angry and jealous, she began to harass the couple. She taunted Peter by dating his friend Flash Thompson, and she threatened Mary Jane's marriage. A mishap with a power-removing device erased her cat-like abilities, and she found that she truly cared for Flash. When she proposed marriage, he refused, saying he had only been drawn to her as the ex-girlfriend of his idol.

Peace followed. She became close friends with both Peter and Mary Jane. After Spider-Man unmasked himself publicly, though, she was enraged, because she had treasured the bond of knowing his identity. She dated Thomas Fireheart, also known as Puma, and joined the new Heroes for Hire during the "Civil War," where Misty Knight suspected she was only there for the money.

Money was in fact her problem in the limited series Marvel Divas, a parody of Sex and the City. She appeared alongside Firestar, Hellcat and Photon. The friends gathered to help Firestar through breast cancer, while Felicia was financially broken. Banks in New York, the targets of her old crimes, refused her a loan, and she began to consider returning to villainy.

The events of "One More Day" then erased her memory of Peter's identity, and her bad luck powers came back. The storyline "Back in Black Cat" in The Amazing Spider-Man #606-607 brought her to a rooftop meeting, and the pair rekindled their romance. A four-issue miniseries followed, in which the Kravinoff family kidnapped her mother Lydia.

Felicia sent a decoy to the exchange and tracked her mother down herself. She found that the Kravinoffs had strapped an explosive device to her mother's wrists, and she got her mother out alive. That rescue showed a loyalty that her darker years were about to test.

  • The fist that knocked out one of her teeth belonged to Superior Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus living in Peter Parker's body. Felicia was robbing a building when he punched her in the face and wrapped her in webbing. Her capture was broadcast live. Her criminal contacts distanced themselves from her, and her stolen treasures were sent back to their owners. The humiliation hardened her.

When the real Spider-Man returned, Electro staged a breakout at the prison holding her. Determined to rebuild her standing by defeating Spider-Man, she attacked him as he evacuated a burning building. He had to pretend to still be Doctor Octopus to drive her off. She teamed with Electro, raided the hideout of the Eel and appeared at a meeting between Mister Negative and Phil Urich.

During Peter's interview on the Fact Channel, Electro attacked the security team and Felicia announced that Spider-Man had fifteen minutes to appear. She then tried to unmask him as J. Jonah Jameson aimed the camera, but Jameson's angle kept anyone from seeing the face. When Electro accepted being depowered, she carried on her vendetta alone.

Her schemes grew stranger. The last issue of The Superior Foes of Spider-Man reveals that Boomerang's love interest was Felicia in disguise, manipulating him and his Sinister Six into helping her steal a portrait of Doctor Doom without a mask. In Hawkeye vs. Deadpool she turned the patients and staff of Brooklyn Psychiatric into an army of "drones" and killed the mind control specialist when cornered.

In a later story she captured Regina Venderkamp, the woman who had bought her confiscated possessions at auction, and tied up May Parker and J. Jonah Jameson Sr. before setting a building on fire with gasoline. Spider-Man saved them all. May reminded the furious Venderkamp that people matter more than things. Felicia told her gang that from now on there was nothing holding her back.

During "Civil War II" she took in Janus Jardeesh, a former minion of the Kingpin, and gained Scorpion as a part-time enforcer. Ex-Army Ranger Lee Price then stole a Venom symbiote spawn, became Maniac and took control of her gang and Spider-Man. Felicia used the Anti-Venom symbiote to free him. Eddie Brock later convinced her to give up being a crime boss and return to being a vigilante.

In Marvel's "Fresh Start," she joined Spider-Man against the Thieves Guild, a group of robbers founded hundreds of years ago, and she explained her bitterness. Her darkness began, she said, when she forgot Spider-Man's identity after Doctor Strange made everyone forget it, not when Doctor Octopus arrested her. In response, Peter took off his mask and showed her his face.

Kindred, who is Harry Osborn, soon learned of the renewed friendship and claimed that Peter drags everyone into his own Hell. In "Last Remains," Felicia seized the Hand of the Vishanti and made a 3D replica of it. She then handed it to Doctor Strange in exchange for his help in saving Spider-Man's soul.

  • For her first couple of decades, Black Cat was mostly a supporting player. Her first solo outing was the 8-page story "The Crown Jewel Caper" in Marvel Comics Presents #57, published in August 1990. It was written by Dwight Jon Zimmerman and pencilled by Mike Harris. Zimmerman says the story missed its scheduled issue, and editor Terry Kavanaugh explained that the inker had murdered his wife and that the artwork was being held as evidence in the trial.

Zimmerman had kept full-size photocopies of the pencilled pages, as was his habit. Josef Rubenstein re-inked from those photocopies, and the story ran.

Filmmaker and writer Kevin Smith began the miniseries Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do in 2002. The first issue was the 2nd best-selling comic of June 2002 and the 14th of the year. After the third issue the series paused until 2005, when Smith announced he had finished the scripts. He admitted he had "zero defense" for being late but argued it was a much better story than it would have been in 2002. The sixth and final issue arrived in 2006.

The story drew controversy for a dark turn in Felicia's past, and one reviewer said readers disliked the long wait. In the plot, Felicia is arrested for the murder of Garrison Klum, a crime she did not commit, and Peter hires Matt Murdock as her lawyer.

Lighter work came with Claws, a 2006 miniseries pairing her with Wolverine. The two wake in cages on a mysterious island and must evade hunters led by someone claiming to be Kraven the Hunter. Claws #1 ranked 60th in sales for August 2006, and a sequel, Claws II, began publication in July 2011. She also led the 2006-2007 Heroes for Hire series.

Her biggest success came in June 2019, when a Black Cat ongoing series by Jed Mackay debuted. Diamond Comic Distributors reported that issue #1 was the best-selling comic of the month with more than 250,000 units sold, and the 4th best-selling of 2019. A reviewer at Comic Book Resources compared it to Ocean's 11 and The Thomas Crown Affair.

The series relaunched in 2020 after "King in Black." It was followed by Giant-Size Black Cat: Infinity Score in 2021, in which Felicia uses half of the Infinity Stones for a deeply personal reason. Team-up series came with Mary Jane & Black Cat, Iron Cat in 2022, and Jackpot & Black Cat.

Critics now treat her as a lead. Elliot Swan of Comic Book Resources said she had grown beyond being a footnote in Spider-Man's life. Comic Book Resources ranked her 2nd in its list of Spider-Man's coolest allies, and IGN placed her 24th among Spider-Man villains. A new series by G. Willow Wilson and artist Gleb Melnikov was announced in May 2025 for publication in August 2025.

  • Night-Spider is the name of Felicia Hardy on Earth-194, in End of the Spider-Verse. Her powers come from a Delvadian spider idol statue. She is one of many alternate versions of the character. In House of M she is an assassin for the Kingpin who becomes a double agent for the Avengers. In Marvel Mangaverse she is a cyborg transformed by the Kingpin, who implanted a failsafe to kill her if she left him.

Some versions are stranger. In Spider-Man: Fairy Tales she is simply a cat, Mary Jane Watson's pet. In Marvel Zombies she has an identical twin, Felicity, who fought as Night Cat before the apocalypse and later joined Nick Fury's resistance. In the Ultimate Universe, a teenager named Felicia Hardy Jr. inherits the Black Cat mantle from her injured father Walter, and she bonds with Spider-Man's son Richard Parker.

On television, she was voiced by Morgan Lofting in the 1981 Spider-Man series and by Jennifer Hale in Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Hale's Felicia is the daughter of a wealthy mother and of John Hardesky, a man the Nazis tricked into memorizing the super-soldier formula. Doctor Octopus kidnaps her to test an improved version of that formula, and she gains the power to change into a white-haired form. Tricia Helfer voiced a version without powers in The Spectacular Spider-Man. In Spidey and His Amazing Friends, Jaiden Klein voices a much younger version obsessed with shiny objects.

Film took longer. Early scripts for Spider-Man 2 featured her in a subplot, and the film's tie-in video game kept it. For Sam Raimi's unmade Spider-Man 4, she was to become a super-powered figure called the Vulturess. In March 2013, Raimi said Anne Hathaway would have played Black Cat in that film.

Felicity Jones finally played Felicia Hardy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, as an Oscorp secretary promoted by Harry Osborn. The script did not even name her Felicia. Sony studio heads gave her that name, planning for her to become Black Cat in sequels that were never made. In August 2018, Sony canceled the planned team-up film Silver & Black, and director Gina Prince-Bythewood later confirmed a television version was being explored.

She finally gets a major live-action role in the series Spider-Noir, where actor Li Jun Li plays Cat Hardy, based on the Marvel Noir version. Cat sings at the Alcove nightclub, owned by Silvermane, who killed her first fiancé, Thomas. She falls in love with his enforcer Flint Marko, whose body begins turning to sand, and she hires Ben Reilly to find him. She then betrays Ben to a doctor who could cure Marko, yet Ben helps her get the cure to Marko right after she kills Silvermane.
