Miley Cyrus

  • Miley Cyrus was eight years old when she grabbed her father's arm in a Toronto theatre. In 2001 the family lived in Toronto while Billy Ray Cyrus filmed the television series Doc. He took her to see a Mirvish production of Mamma Mia! at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. She grabbed his arm and told him, "This is what I want to do, daddy. I want to be an actress." Cyrus grew up to be an American singer, songwriter and actress. Few performers have changed their public image as often or as loudly. Billboard ranks her among the greatest pop stars of the 21st century, and she holds eight Guinness World Records. This documentary follows a girl who wanted to act and became a teen idol, a lightning rod and a chart-topper. How did a child actress turn one Disney Channel role into a lasting music career? Why did each reinvention bring such fierce reactions? And what sits behind the famous name, the family and the causes she supports?

  • Destiny Hope Cyrus was born on the 23rd of November 1992 in Franklin, Tennessee. Her mother is Leticia "Tish" Jean Cyrus, born Finley, and her father is the country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. She was born with supraventricular tachycardia, a condition that causes an abnormal resting heart rate. Her parents chose the name Destiny Hope because they believed she would accomplish great things. They called her "Smiley" because she smiled so often as an infant, and later shortened it to "Miley". In 2008 she legally changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus. Her middle name honors her grandfather Ronald Ray Cyrus, a Democratic politician from Kentucky.

Dolly Parton is her godmother. Her parents married in secret on the 28th of December 1993, against the advice of her father's record company. Two more children followed, a son named Braison and a daughter named Noah. Her mother also has two children from a previous relationship, Brandi and Trace. Her father's first child, Christopher Cody, was born in April 1992 and grew up in South Carolina with his mother, the waitress Kristin Luckey. All of Cyrus's maternal siblings became entertainers. Trace was a vocalist and guitarist for the band Metro Station, Noah is an actress, and Brandi is a professional DJ. The family farmhouse stands on 500 acres outside Nashville.

Church shaped her childhood. She was baptized in a Southern Baptist church before moving to Hollywood in 2005, and she wore a purity ring while growing up.

Lessons in Toronto gave her formal training. She studied singing and acting at the Armstrong Acting Studio, and her first role was Kylie in her father's series Doc. In 2003 she was credited under her birth name as "Young Ruthie" in Tim Burton's Big Fish. She also auditioned with Taylor Lautner for the film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D. She was one of two finalists, but she chose to appear in Hannah Montana instead.

Her mother took on the role of manager and worked to assemble a team. Mitchell Gossett, director of the youth division at Cunningham Escott Slevin Doherty, is often credited with discovering Cyrus. Dolly Parton later steered her to Jason Morey of Morey Management Group to handle her music career. Gossett played a key part in the audition for Hannah Montana, the role that would make her famous.

  • Cyrus was thirteen when she auditioned for the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. She first read for the part of Miley Stewart's best friend. After a comical performance she was called back to audition for Miley Stewart herself. She was refused at first because she seemed "too small and too young". Her singing and goofy acting won her the role anyway.

The series premiered in March 2006 to the largest audience a Disney Channel program had drawn. It quickly ranked among the highest-rated shows on basic cable, and Cyrus was labeled a "teen idol". In September 2006 she toured with the Cheetah Girls as Hannah Montana. Walt Disney Records released a soundtrack credited to her character in October. It topped the Billboard 200 and sold over three million copies worldwide. Cyrus became the first act within the Walt Disney Company with deals in television, film, consumer products and music.

Hollywood Records signed her to a four-album deal for music outside the character. The two-disc Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus arrived in June 2007. Its first disc was the second Hannah Montana soundtrack, and its second disc was her debut studio album. It reached the top of the Billboard 200 and sold over three million copies. The single "See You Again" sold over two million copies in the United States. She also recorded "Ready, Set, Don't Go" with her father.

Demand for the Best of Both Worlds Tour of 2007-08 startled even the ticket sellers. Ticketmaster officials said they had not seen demand like it since The Beatles or Elvis. A 3D concert film followed in 2008, titled Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert. It was meant as a limited release, but its success earned it a longer run. In February 2008 she and her friend Mandy Jiroux began posting YouTube videos they called "The Miley and Mandy Show", and the clips gathered a large online following.

Breakout arrived in June 2008 with the highest first-week sales of her career to that point. It became her third album to top the Billboard 200. Her film debut came the same year in the animated Bolt, opposite John Travolta. She co-wrote the song "I Thought I Lost You" for the film and sang it as a duet with him. The song earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song.

In March 2009 she released "The Climb" from the soundtrack to Hannah Montana: The Movie. The song crossed over to both pop and country formats. The soundtrack became her fourth number-one album, and at sixteen she was the youngest artist in history with four number-one albums on the chart. Her first fashion line, Miley Cyrus and Max Azria, sold through Walmart. "Party in the U.S.A." and the EP The Time of Our Lives promoted it, and the song was later certified 16-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Her first world tour, the Wonder World Tour, ran in 2009. On the 7th of December 2009 she performed for Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Performance in Blackpool, Lancashire. Billboard ranked her the fourth best-selling female music artist of 2009. Cyrus called the EP "a transitioning album … really to introduce people to what I want my next record to sound like".

  • In 2008 the singer Donny Osmond predicted what lay ahead for her. He wrote: "Miley will have to face adulthood... As she does, she'll want to change her image, and that change will be met with adversity." The warning came true quickly.

In April 2008 a teenager who hacked her Gmail account leaked pictures of her in underwear and a swimsuit. More controversy followed when reports said the fifteen-year-old Cyrus had posed topless for a Vanity Fair shoot by Annie Leibovitz. The New York Times later clarified that she was wrapped in a bed sheet and was not topless. Her fame grew sharply after the scandal, and photographs of her reportedly sold to photo agencies for up to $2,000 each.

The film The Last Song, based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, arrived in 2010 as an attempt at a more mature image. Reviews were negative, but it was a box office hit. Her third album, Can't Be Tamed, followed with a more dance-oriented sound. It stirred controversy over its lyrics and her live performances. It sold 106,000 copies in its first week and became her first studio album not to top the Billboard 200. Earlier, her 2009 Teen Choice Awards performance of "Party in the U.S.A." had caused a "national uproar" over her outfit and perceived pole dancing. On Britain's Got Talent she pretended to kiss a female backup dancer while performing "Can't Be Tamed", and she defended the moment.

The final Hannah Montana soundtrack came in October 2010 and was seen as a commercial failure. In December 2010 a video appeared online showing the eighteen-year-old Cyrus smoking salvia with a bong. Forbes still placed her thirteenth on its Celebrity 100 list that year.

The Gypsy Heart Tour began in April 2011 and had no North American dates. She said she only wanted to travel where she felt "the most love". She parted ways with Hollywood Records and announced a break from music to focus on acting. She confirmed she would not attend college. On the 5th of March 2011 she hosted Saturday Night Live and poked fun at her recent controversies.

The acting years brought mixed results. She was announced as the voice of Mavis in Hotel Transylvania in November 2011, but by February 2012 Selena Gomez had replaced her. LOL, with Demi Moore, had a limited release and was a critical and commercial failure. In So Undercover she played an undercover FBI agent at a college sorority.

Music returned in smaller form. During the spring and summer of 2012 she posted the Backyard Sessions on YouTube, live performances of classic songs she personally liked. She also cut her long brown hair into a blonde pixie cut. She said she had never felt more herself, and that the change really altered her life.

  • In 2013 Cyrus hired Larry Rudolph, best known for representing Britney Spears, as her manager. She also signed with RCA Records. Working with Pharrell Williams and Mike Will Made-It, she steered her fourth album toward hip hop. She appeared on Snoop Lion's "Ashtrays and Heartbreaks" and on will.i.am's "Fall Down", which entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number fifty-eight. The Mike Will Made It single "23", with Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J, peaked at number eleven.

"We Can't Stop" arrived on the 3rd of June 2013 as her comeback single. It topped charts in places such as the United Kingdom. Its video set the Vevo record for most views in twenty-four hours and became the first on the site to reach 100 million views.

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards turned attention into scrutiny. Cyrus performed with Robin Thicke, wearing a flesh-colored latex two-piece and using a giant foam finger. One reviewer likened the show to a "bad acid trip". Another called it a "trainwreck in the classic sense of the word". She released "Wrecking Ball" on the same day. The video showed her swinging naked on a wrecking ball and was viewed over nineteen million times in twenty-four hours. Sinéad O'Connor criticized it, saying: "you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether it's the music business or yourself doing the pimping". The single still became her first number one on the Hot 100. It held the top spot for three weeks and sold over two million copies.

The documentary Miley: The Movement aired on MTV on the 2nd of October 2013 and chronicled the making of the album. Bangerz was released on the 4th of October and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 270,000 copies. The next day she hosted Saturday Night Live for a second time. MTV named her Artist of the Year on the 9th of December 2013. On the 29th of January 2014 she played MTV Unplugged, with a guest appearance by Madonna. It became the highest-rated MTV Unplugged in a decade, with over 1.7 million streams.

The Bangerz Tour of 2014 was positively received by critics, and she entered the stage by sliding down a slide shaped like a tongue. Two months in, her Alaskan Klee Kai was found mauled to death at her home after fighting with a coyote. Two weeks later, an allergic reaction to the antibiotic cephalexin put her in hospital in Kansas City. She resumed the tour two weeks afterward, beginning with the European leg.

The reaction reached well beyond music. In November 2013 Time magazine named her a finalist for Person of the Year, and she came third with 16.3% of the staff vote. In March 2014 Skidmore College in New York began offering a sociology course titled "The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender and Media". Her godmother Dolly Parton said: "the girl can write. The girl can sing. The girl is smart." Parton added, "I did it my way, so why can't she do it her way?"

Cyrus turned experimental next. She worked with Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips on their remake of the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, called With a Little Help from My Fwends. Coyne compared their shared material to the catalogs of Pink Floyd and Portishead. As host of the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards she became its first openly pansexual host. At the show's finale she performed a new song, "Dooo It!", and announced that her fifth album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, was streaming free on SoundCloud. She wrote and produced it primarily herself. She described it as "a little psychedelic, but still in that pop world".

  • Cyrus sings as a mezzo-soprano, though one description once called her voice an alto with a "Nashville twang". Her voice has a distinctive rasp, similar to that of Pink and Amy Winehouse. She names Elvis Presley as her biggest inspiration. Others she cites include Madonna, Lana Del Rey, Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, Joan Jett and Britney Spears. Of her early album Breakout she said: "I just hope this record showcases that, more than anything, I'm a songwriter." She co-wrote eight of its songs.

In March 2016 Cyrus signed on as a coach for the eleventh season of The Voice, replacing Gwen Stefani. She became the youngest coach in any version of the show. In September 2016 she co-starred in Crisis in Six Scenes, a series Woody Allen created for Amazon Studios. She played a radical activist hiding from the police in a conservative 1960s household.

On the 11th of May 2017 she released "Malibu" as the lead single from her sixth album. It debuted at number 64 on the Hot 100 and reached number 10 in its second week. Younger Now followed on the 29th of September 2017. On the 30th of October she said she would release no more singles from it and would not tour for it.

Covers defined the following year. At MusiCares in 2019 she honored her godmother by performing "Islands in the Stream" with Shawn Mendes. She sang "The Bitch Is Back" at a tribute concert for Elton John in 2018. Her collaboration with Mark Ronson, "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart", came out on the 29th of November 2018. It peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart.

The seventh album was first planned as three six-song EPs under the title She Is Miley Cyrus. She Is Coming appeared on the 31st of May 2019 with collaborations including RuPaul and Ghostface Killah. It debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 with 36,000 album-equivalent units. She promoted it with a European summer tour that included Glastonbury and Primavera Sound.

The Black Mirror episode "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" reached Netflix on the 5th of June 2019. It was filmed in South Africa in November 2018. Cyrus played the fictional pop star Ashley O and voiced her AI doll, Ashley Too. The plot was compared to Britney Spears's conservatorship, and Cyrus has been an advocate for the Free Britney movement. She also joined Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey on "Don't Call Me Angel", released on the 13th of September 2019.

On the 14th of August 2020 she released "Midnight Sky" and cancelled the remaining two EPs. It peaked at number 14 on the Hot 100. Plastic Hearts followed on the 27th of November 2020. It marked her move into rock and glam rock, with Billy Idol, Joan Jett and Dua Lipa among the guests. Fans demanded live covers of "Heart of Glass" by Blondie and "Zombie" by The Cranberries, so she included them. The album debuted at number two with 60,000 units, her twelfth top-ten entry. It also gave her the record for the most Billboard 200 top-five albums in the 21st century by a female artist.

In February 2021 she played the first TikTok Tailgate in Tampa for 7,500 vaccinated healthcare workers. In March 2021 she left RCA for Columbia Records. Her cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" featured Elton John on piano, Yo-Yo Ma and Chad Smith. Her Attention Tour of festivals ran from February to the 26th of March 2022. In Bogotá, fans sang "Angels Like You" all night outside her hotel after the song reached number one on iTunes in Colombia.

  • In 2014 Cyrus founded the Happy Hippie Foundation, which works to "fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations". The cause traces back to her teens. She came out to her mother at fourteen and said: "I never want to label myself! I am ready to love anyone that loves me for who I am! I am open." In June 2015 Time magazine reported that she identified as gender fluid. She has an equals sign tattooed on her ring finger in support of same-sex marriage.

Giving began long before the foundation. In 2008 and 2009 she donated one dollar from every ticket sold on her Best of Both Worlds and Wonder World Tours to City of Hope National Medical Center. On her 16th birthday she delivered a US$1 million donation from Disney to Youth Service America at Disneyland. In April 2010 she worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to perform for and meet 29 children in Los Angeles. In 2011 Hilary Duff presented her with the first Global Action Youth Leadership Award. It recognized her support for Blessings in a Backpack and her Get Ur Good On campaign. For her 20th birthday, activists at PETA adopted a pig named Nora in her name.

She became a vegan in 2014. In 2020 she told The Joe Rogan Experience that an omega-3 deficiency forced her onto a pescatarian diet. She said: "I cried for the fish... it really hurts me to eat fish."

Her relationships drew constant attention. She dated Nick Jonas from June 2006 to December 2007. In 2009, while filming The Last Song, she began an on-again, off-again relationship with her co-star Liam Hemsworth. They were first engaged from May 2012 to September 2013 and became engaged again in October 2016. In November 2018 the Woolsey Fire burned down their California home. On the 23rd of December 2018 they married in a private ceremony at their home in Nashville. She said the loss of the house made the timing feel right.

On the 10th of August 2019 she announced their separation, and Hemsworth filed for divorce on the 21st of August. The divorce was finalized on the 28th of January 2020. Her song "Slide Away" hinted at the breakup, and its video showed a ten of hearts playing card at the bottom of a pool. She later said "Midnight Sky" was inspired by her breakups with Hemsworth, Kaitlynn Carter and Cody Simpson.

Since 2021 she has dated the musician Maxx Morando, who worked as a producer on Endless Summer Vacation. On the 2nd of December 2025 it was reported that the two were engaged.

  • On the 13th of January 2023 Cyrus released "Flowers", and it debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, the Global 200 and the Global Excl. US charts. It stayed thirteen weeks atop both global charts, the longest run on the Global 200 at the time. It led the Hot 100 for eight non-consecutive weeks, her longest run and her first number one in a decade. It reached number one in 37 countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the UK.

The records kept coming. On Spotify it became the fastest track to pass 100 million plays and one billion plays, in 7 and 112 days. Fifty-seven weeks atop the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart made it the longest-running number one on any Billboard airplay chart. Its 106 total weeks across all Billboard airplay charts is the most ever. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry named it the best-selling song of 2023 globally.

Endless Summer Vacation, her first album for Columbia Records, was released on the 10th of March 2023. She called it her "love letter to LA". It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with 119,000 album-equivalent units. A Disney+ special in the Backyard Sessions series premiered the same day. A reissue added "Used to Be Young", which debuted at number eight in the United States.

At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards she received six nominations. She won Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Flowers", her first Grammy wins. Live on stage she changed the lyric to celebrate, singing "I just won my first Grammy!" The song also won International Song of the Year at the 2024 Brit Awards, her first Brit win. Her duet with Beyoncé, "II Most Wanted", won Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 67th Grammys, her third career win.

She also took smaller screen roles. In February 2024 she played Tiffany Plastercaster in the Ethan Coen-directed Drive-Away Dolls. She co-wrote "Beautiful That Way" for the film The Last Showgirl, and it was nominated for Best Original Song at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.

Something Beautiful, her ninth studio album, was released on the 30th of May 2025. She described it as "hypnotic" and "an attempt to medicate somewhat of a sick culture through music". It debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 with 44,000 units. A musical film of the same name premiered at the Tribeca Festival on the 6th of June 2025. Billboard called it a "one of a kind pop opera". In December 2025 she released "Dream as One" for Avatar: Fire and Ash, which earned a Golden Globe nomination.

The Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special reached Disney+ on the 24th of March 2026, with Cyrus as executive producer. She performed a new Hannah Montana song, "Younger You", released three days later. A duet version with Lainey Wilson followed on the 17th of April 2026.
