  • Gwen Stefani had a hit in 2005 that changed how Americans bought music. Her single “Hollaback Girl” rose to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It also became the first song downloaded one million times in the United States. The woman behind that brass-driven track had come up through a ska band, in a decade when ska found few listeners. How does a singer from Anaheim, raised Catholic and named after a character in a novel, end up with a record like that? Why did she keep leaving the spotlight and then walking back into it? And what did she build around her music along the way?

  • Gwen Renée Stefani was born on the 3rd of October 1969 in Fullerton, California, and grew up Catholic in nearby Anaheim. Her parents chose her first name from a stewardess in the 1968 novel Airport. Her middle name came from “Walk Away Renée”, a 1966 song by the Left Banke that the Four Tops covered in 1967.

Her father, Dennis Stefani, is Italian American and worked as a marketing executive for Yamaha. Her mother, Patti, is Irish-American and worked as an accountant before becoming a homemaker. Both parents loved folk music, and they played Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris around the house.

Gwen has two younger siblings, Jill and Todd, and an older brother named Eric. Eric would play keyboards in her future band before leaving it to work in animation on The Simpsons.

She graduated from Loara High School in 1987. She then studied at Fullerton College and Cypress College, and transferred to California State University, Fullerton. She left that school without finishing, in order to chase a music career.

In a 2023 interview with Allure, she said her father's job kept him traveling between California and Japan for 18 years. That fact would shape one of the best-known parts of her public image.

  • Eric Stefani introduced his sister to 2 Tone ska through records by Madness and The Selecter. The siblings first formed a band called Applecore. In 1986 Eric invited Gwen to sing for No Doubt, a ska group he was putting together. Another singer, John Spence, died in December 1987, and she became the sole lead vocalist.

Interscope Records signed the band in 1991. Their self-titled debut followed in 1992, but ska-pop could not compete with the popularity of grunge. In 1994, before either No Doubt or Sublime had broken through, she sang guest vocals on “Saw Red” from the Sublime album Robbin' the Hood. She disliked the aggression of female grunge artists. Instead she named Blondie singer Debbie Harry as a major influence, for combining power with sex appeal.

Tragic Kingdom arrived in 1995 and took more than three years to make. It followed the self-released The Beacon Street Collection, which came out the same year. Five singles came from it, including “Just a Girl”, “Spiderwebs” and “Don't Speak”. “Don't Speak” topped the Hot 100 Airplay year-end chart of 1997.

Stefani paused college for one semester to tour. The tour lasted two and a half years, so she never went back. The album earned a Grammy nomination and sold more than 16 million copies worldwide by 2004. In late 2000, Rolling Stone called her “the Queen of Confessional Pop”.

As the band rose, she also recorded with others. She sang “You're the Boss” with the Brian Setzer Orchestra and “South Side” with Moby. Her duet with Eve, “Let Me Blow Ya Mind”, won the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2002.

No Doubt's 2000 album, Return of Saturn, sold less well. It expanded on the new wave influences of Tragic Kingdom, and its lyrics dwelt on her insecurities, including indecision about settling down and having a child. Rock Steady, in 2001, moved toward reggae and dancehall. It gave the band its highest US chart positions, and both “Hey Baby” and “Underneath It All” won Grammy Awards. A greatest hits set, The Singles 1992-2003, followed with a cover of Talk Talk's “It's My Life”, and then the band went on hiatus.

  • Love. Angel. Music. Baby. reached stores on the 12th of November 2004. Stefani built it to modernize the music she had loved in high school, drawing on 1980s new wave, synthpop and electro. Her collaborators included Tony Kanal, Tom Rothrock, Linda Perry, André 3000, Nellee Hooper, the Neptunes and New Order.

Many artists leaving a band try to prove their depth. She chose to make fun pop instead, which observers found unusual. One description called the album “fun as hell but... not exactly rife with subversive social commentary”. It entered the Billboard 200 at number seven, selling 309,000 copies in its first week. It later went multi-platinum in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.

“What You Waiting For?”, co-written with Linda Perry, opened the run. It topped the ARIA Singles Chart in Australia, stalled at number 47 on the Hot 100, and reached the top ten on most other charts. The lyrics explained why she was making a solo album, and they admitted her fear of leaving No Doubt and her wish to have a baby.

“Rich Girl” paired her with Eve and was produced by Dr. Dre. It adapted a 1990s song by the British duo Louchie Lou & Michie One, which itself nodded to “If I Were a Rich Man” from the musical Fiddler on the Roof. “Cool” reached the top 20 in the US and UK. Its video, filmed on Lake Como, portrayed her former relationship with Tony Kanal. “Luxurious” came fifth and did less well.

Film came calling at the same time. After a 2003 Teen Vogue shoot inspired by Marilyn Monroe, director Martin Scorsese noticed her picture. His daughter was a No Doubt fan, and he cast Stefani as Jean Harlow in The Aviator in 2004. To prepare, she read two biographies and watched 18 of Harlow's films. Shooting took four to five days, and she had few lines. She also voiced the title character in the 2004 video game Malice.

The album's sixth single, “Crash”, appeared in January 2006. It stood in for a planned sequel album, which she postponed because she was pregnant.

  • The Sweet Escape reached stores on the 1st of December 2006, aimed more at dance floors than her debut had been. Stefani again worked with Kanal, Perry and the Neptunes, and added Akon and Tim Rice-Oxley of the English rock band Keane. Critics split. Sia Michel heard a moody, lightly autobiographical feel but doubted her as a dissatisfied diva. Rob Sheffield called it a “hasty return” that repeated her debut with less energy.

“Wind It Up” used yodeling and an interpolation of The Sound of Music, and it reached the top ten in the US and UK. The title track hit the top ten in over 15 nations, with number-two peaks in the US, Australia and the UK. It ranked third on the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart of 2007. She mentored on the sixth season of American Idol, performed the song with Akon, and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Meanwhile, No Doubt started a new album without her. On the 28th of March 2008, she posted on the band's fan forum that her songwriting was slow because she was pregnant with her second child. The band headlined the Bamboozle festival in May 2009 alongside Fall Out Boy. Their album Push and Shove, led by the single “Settle Down”, peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. On the 3rd of November 2012, they pulled the video for “Looking Hot” after complaints that it was insensitive toward Native Americans.

On the 12th of April 2014, Stefani surprised the Coachella crowd by joining Pharrell Williams to sing “Hollaback Girl”. Later that month she was confirmed as a coach for the seventh season of The Voice, replacing Christina Aguilera. Her comeback single “Baby Don't Lie” arrived on the 20th of October 2014. It was scrapped from her third album, along with “Spark the Fire”, which Williams produced. She later said much of her 2014 work felt forced and inauthentic.

The turning point was “Used to Love You”, about her breakup with Gavin Rossdale. She first sang it on the 17th of October 2015 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. This Is What the Truth Feels Like followed on the 18th of March 2016. It entered at number one on the Billboard 200 with 84,000 album-equivalent units, her first solo chart-topper there. She also voiced DJ Suki in the animated film Trolls, released on the 4th of November 2016.

Her first full-length Christmas album, You Make It Feel Like Christmas, came out on the 6th of October 2017. Its title track, with guest vocals from Blake Shelton, had appeared digitally on the 22nd of September 2017.

  • Just a Girl: Las Vegas, Stefani's first concert residency, opened on the 27th of June 2018 at the Zappos Theater. It borrowed its name from the No Doubt hit, and one dollar from each ticket went to the organization Cure4Kids. The pandemic postponed the final eight shows, and the residency ended on the 6th of November 2021.

Her seat on The Voice has rotated more than most. She replaced Adam Levine for season 17, after he left following 16 seasons. Nick Jonas took her place for season 18, and she came back for season 19. There her finalist Carter Rubin won, giving her a first victory as coach on her fifth attempt. She was the ninth coach to win and the fourth woman, after Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson.

She then returned for season 22, replacing Ariana Grande, and left again for season 23. She replaced Kelly Clarkson for season 24, sat out season 25, and came back for season 26 as senior coach after John Legend's departure. In 2025 Kelsea Ballerini replaced her for season 27.

Her duets with Blake Shelton became hits of their own. “Nobody but You”, released on the 13th of December 2019, peaked at number 18 on the Hot 100 and 49 on the Canadian Hot 100. “Happy Anywhere”, inspired by the pandemic, followed on the 24th of July 2020. Both songs reached number one on the Billboard US Country Airplay chart.

Other collaborations arrived in these years. A Mark Ronson remix of Dua Lipa's “Physical” featured her, after she was first asked to clear a “Hollaback Girl” sample for another Lipa remix. She released “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” on the 7th of December 2020 and “Slow Clap” on the 11th of March 2021. Both were expected on her fifth album but were dropped. In June 2023, “True Babe” became her first solo single in over two years.

Bouquet came out on the 15th of November 2024. The duet “Purple Irises” with Shelton appeared in February of that year. In July she released “Hello World” with Anderson Paak as a song for the Olympics, sponsored by Coca-Cola. “Somebody Else's” and “Swallow My Tears” led the album, and a deluxe edition in March 2025 added “Still Gonna Love You” and eleven acoustic versions.

No Doubt also returned. On the 13th of April 2024, the band played Coachella, its first show together since 2015. In late January 2025, they performed at the FireAid benefit for Southern California communities hit by wildfires. In October 2025, the band announced a six-show Las Vegas residency for 2026.

  • Stefani sewed much of what she wore on stage with No Doubt, and her outfits grew more eclectic over time. Stylist Andrea Lieberman introduced her to haute couture, which led to her fashion line L.A.M.B. It drew on Guatemalan, Japanese and Jamaican styles. Teri Hatcher and Nicole Kidman wore it.

In June 2005 she added Harajuku Lovers, a cheaper line she called “a glorified merchandise line”. It included a camera, mobile phone charms and undergarments. A limited run of dolls followed in late 2006. In late 2007 she launched a perfume called L. In September 2008 she released five Harajuku Lovers fragrances, based on the four Harajuku Girls and on herself.

Later ventures kept coming. She became a spokesperson for L'Oréal Paris, and Urban Decay released a limited collection with her in 2016. After needing glasses, she began designing eyewear, which launched under L.A.M.B. in 2016, plus a cheaper GX label with Tura Inc. In 2014 she announced Kuu Kuu Harajuku, an animated series about a band called HJ5. She voiced a character in the show and also served as creator, showrunner and executive producer. In March 2022 she launched the makeup brand GXVE Beauty.

Her look was a brand in itself. She began wearing a bindi in the mid-1990s after family gatherings with Tony Kanal, who has Indian heritage. Since the 1995 video for “Just a Girl”, she has been known for bare midriffs. She is a natural brunette, but she has worn platinum blonde since late 1994. She dyed her hair blue in 1998 and pink in 1999, and pink hair appeared on the cover of Return of Saturn.

In 2006 she rebuilt her image around Elvira Hancock, the character Michelle Pfeiffer played in the 1983 film Scarface. The new look came with a symbol of two back-to-back Gs on a diamond-encrusted key necklace, which became a motif for The Sweet Escape.

Her debut album also introduced four Harajuku Girls, dancers dressed in styles influenced by Gothic Lolita fashion. They appeared in her videos, on the album cover and on her Harajuku Lovers Tour. Forbes reported that from June 2007 to June 2008 she earned $27 million from touring, fashion and commercials. That made her the world's tenth highest paid music personality at the time.

In 2023, she described herself as a “super fan” of Japanese culture. Her comments drew accusations of cultural appropriation, and writers pointed out that she is Irish-American and Italian-American, not Japanese.

On the awards front, her solo work has won one Grammy, four MTV Video Music Awards, one American Music Award, one Brit Award and two Billboard Music Awards. With No Doubt she won two more Grammys. In 2005, Rolling Stone called her “the only true female rock star left on radio or MTV” and put her on its cover. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, and was inducted into the inaugural Orange County Hall of Fame the same year.

Several younger artists cite her influence, including Hayley Williams of Paramore, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa and Charli XCX. Amanda Reifer, lead singer of the Barbados quartet Cover Drive, said she would “pass out” if she ever met Stefani.

  • Stefani began dating her bandmate Tony Kanal soon after he joined No Doubt. In 2005 she said, “all I ever did was look at Tony and pray that God would let me have a baby with him.” The band nearly split when he ended the relationship. Their breakup inspired many songs on Tragic Kingdom, including “Don't Speak”, “Sunday Morning” and “Hey You!”.

She met Gavin Rossdale, frontman of Bush, in 1995 when both bands played a holiday concert for the radio station KROQ. They married on the 14th of September 2002 at St Paul's, Covent Garden in London, and held a second wedding in Los Angeles two weeks later. Kingston James McGregor was born on the 26th of May 2006. Zuma Nesta Rock followed on the 21st of August 2008, and Apollo Bowie Flynn on the 28th of February 2014. On the 3rd of August 2015, she filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences”. It was finalized on the 8th of April 2016, with joint custody of the three boys.

In November 2015 she announced her relationship with Blake Shelton, her co-star on The Voice. That year they co-wrote “Go Ahead and Break My Heart”, which appeared on Shelton's 2016 album If I'm Honest. They announced their engagement on the 27th of October 2020. They married at a chapel on Shelton's Oklahoma ranch on the 3rd of July 2021. Also in 2020, she was diagnosed with dyslexia.

Her charity work has often followed disasters. After the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, she donated $1 million to Save the Children's Japan fund. She also ran an eBay auction from the 11th to the 25th of April 2011, offering vintage items from her wardrobe and a private Harajuku-themed tea party at Royal/T in Los Angeles. At the amfAR gala during the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, she auctioned a lace black dress and raised over $125,000. In August 2012 she hosted a fundraiser with First Lady Michelle Obama at her Beverly Hills home. In 2016, the Radio Disney Music Awards gave her a Hero Award for charitable work.

She supports the LGBTQ community. Asked in 2019 how she would react if one of her children came out as gay, she told Pride Source, “I would be blessed with a gay son.”

Stefani remains Catholic. She speaks for the Advent program on Hallow, a Catholic prayer app, where she has become a visible voice for her faith.
