  • Hilary Duff was a child actor cast in the pilot of the NBC comedy Daddio, and producers removed her from the cast before it aired. A week later she won the title role in a new Disney Channel series. Years after that, in 2026, Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Between those two moments lies a career that ran through television, pop charts, bestselling novels, fashion lines and fragrance. Several questions run through the story. How did a girl from Texas become the face of a vast merchandising operation? Why did her most famous character both make her and hold her back? And what did she do once the teen idol label no longer fit?

  • Hilary Erhard Duff was born on the 28th of September 1987 in Houston, Texas. Her father, Robert Erhard Duff, was a partner in a chain of convenience stores. Her mother, Susan Colleen Duff, began as a homemaker and later became a film and music producer. Hilary had one older sister, Haylie. Her ancestry reaches back to the British Army officer Alexander Spotswood and to Catherine Carey.

The sisters grew up between Houston and San Antonio, where their father operated his stores. Their mother signed both girls up for acting, singing and ballet classes. Local theater roles followed, and then a place in a touring BalletMet production of The Nutcracker in San Antonio.

In 1993 the sisters and their mother moved to California, while their father stayed in Houston to look after the business. The girls auditioned for several years, appeared in many television commercials and modeled for clothing brands. Hilary was home-schooled from the age of eight because of her work. She later explained the family's thinking with a comparison to athletics. She said, "My sister and I really showed an interest in performing and dedication, and our mother was like, 'How can I tell my kids no?' It's the same as kids that are going into sports. Parents support them and push them."

The early credits were small. In 1997 she had an uncredited part in the Hallmark Entertainment western miniseries True Women. In 1998 she was an uncredited extra in the ensemble comedy-drama Playing by Heart. That same year she landed her first major role, playing Wendy in Casper Meets Wendy, based on the Harvey Comics characters. Her supporting turn as Ellie in the 1999 television film The Soul Collector earned her a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie or Pilot (Supporting Young Actress). In March 2000 she played a sick child on the CBS medical drama Chicago Hope.

On the Daddio pilot, her co-star Michael Chiklis noticed something right away. He said, "After working with her the first day, I remember saying to my wife, 'This young girl is gonna be a movie star.' She was completely at ease with herself and comfortable in her own skin."

  • Lizzie McGuire premiered on the Disney Channel on the 12th of January 2001 and drew an estimated 2.3 million viewers per episode. Duff became a household name among the show's pre-teen audience, and the label teen idol followed quickly. Disney built a product line around her character, including soundtracks, books, dolls, toys and video games. Some of those games were made for the Game Boy Advance. The company reportedly earned an estimated $100 million from the merchandise alone.

Cadet Kelly, a 2002 Disney Channel film, required Duff to undergo a month of military training. The film became the network's most watched program in its then 19-year history. The Lizzie McGuire Movie arrived in 2003 with Duff in the same role. One account of its success said it "indicated that Duff's television fanbase could be migrated to film."

The series ended on the 14th of February 2004, once Duff had completed her 65-episode contract. Talk of a second film and a spinoff for the sister network ABC came to nothing. The salary offered to Duff for that plan was not enough.

At the D23 Expo in August 2019, Duff announced that she would return as Lizzie in a revival on Disney+. The creator, Terri Minsky, was to come back as showrunner, and Duff would serve as an executive producer. The story would follow a 30-year-old Lizzie living in New York City. Two episodes were filmed. On the 9th of January 2020, reports said Minsky had left over creative differences, and production stopped.

In February 2020 Duff revealed that Disney+ had restricted the project to a PG rating. She felt that would be a "disservice" to fans and urged a move to Hulu. In July 2020 she said she was "optimistic that the revival will happen." On the 16th of December 2020 she confirmed that Disney+ had scrapped it. Disney told USA Today that fans "have high expectations for any new stories." The company said it would wait "until we are confident we can meet those expectations." Hulu, the home Duff had wanted for the revival, would later give her the lead in another show.

  • Santa Claus Lane, released in October 2002 through Walt Disney Records, was Duff's first album, and it was built around Christmas. Before it, she had recorded Brooke McClymont's "I Can't Wait" for the Lizzie McGuire soundtrack and a cover of "The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room" for DisneyMania. The album peaked in the lower portion of the Billboard 200, and Buena Vista Records later re-released it. It earned a Gold certification from the RIAA for shipments above 500,000 copies. Duff then signed with Andre Recke of Hollywood Records. Her early recordings got heavy airplay on Radio Disney, but Recke and Buena Vista Records pictured her reaching an older audience.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie soundtrack gave her an early hit abroad. Her single "Why Not" reached the top 20 in Australia, the Netherlands and New Zealand. She also recorded the original song "What Dreams Are Made Of" for the film's finale. The soundtrack went 2× Platinum with the RIAA.

Metamorphosis arrived in August 2003. Critics gave it mixed reviews, yet it topped the Billboard 200 and sold over five million copies within two years. More than three million of those sales came in the United States. She worked heavily with The Matrix, and critics compared the sound to Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson and Lindsay Lohan. Duff said that listening to rock music as a child shaped the album's direction. The single "So Yesterday" went Platinum in Australia. "Come Clean" earned a Gold certification from the RIAA and became the theme song of the MTV series Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County. The Metamorphosis Tour ran from November to December 2003.

Her self-titled album followed in September 2004. Duff took a bigger hand in its production, and its rock elements drew the same comparisons to Lavigne and Simpson. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and sold over 1.8 million copies in the United States. Its single "Fly" failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Earlier that year she had won Best New Female Artist at the World Music Awards. In August 2005 came Most Wanted, a compilation mixing earlier songs with remixes and new material. It debuted at number one, and its single "Wake Up" became her second to reach Gold. The album sold over one million copies within a month.

For Dignity in 2007, Duff co-wrote thirteen of the fourteen songs, working with writers including Kara DioGuardi. Production from Rhett Lawrence, Tim & Bob and Richard Vission pushed the sound toward dance and electropop. The lyrics drew on her parents' divorce, her breakup with Joel Madden and the stalking she had endured. An MTV two-part special, Hilary Duff: This Is Now, chronicled her return to music. The Dignity Tour ran from July 2007 through February 2008. The album debuted at number three and went Gold, but it did not match her earlier sales. Its single "With Love" reached 24 on the Hot 100, her highest position there. "With Love" and "Stranger" both topped the Hot Dance Club Play chart.

Best of Hilary Duff, a 2008 greatest hits album with little promotion, entered the Billboard 200 at number 125. It was the first of her American albums to go without an RIAA certification. Its single "Reach Out" sampled the Depeche Mode song "Personal Jesus" and became her third consecutive number one on the dance club chart. In December 2008 she told MTV she would write another album, but it never took shape.

On the 23rd of July 2014, it was revealed that Duff had signed with RCA Records. Her single "Chasing the Sun" followed on the 29th of July 2014 and entered the Hot 100 at number 79. It was her first song on that chart since "Stranger" in 2007. Its video drew fourteen million views in its first week. Banjos on that song and on "All About You" gave the 2014 releases an earthy, folk-influenced indie pop sound. "All About You" became a top-twenty hit in Australia and later earned a Gold certification there.

Breathe In. Breathe Out. came out on the 12th of June 2015 and debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200, her fifth top-five album. It balanced dance-pop and EDM with the folk pop sound first planned for the record. Duff had intended to tour but announced in February 2016 that she would not. It was her first studio album without an RIAA certification and her only one for RCA.

In September 2025 Duff signed with Atlantic Records, which announced a docu-series about what it called her "musical comeback." At Vogue World: Hollywood 2025 she said she wanted to feel safe before returning to music. She had been working with her husband, Matthew Koma, and said the result would be heard in "the blink of an eye." The single "Mature" arrived on the 6th of November 2025, and "Roommates" followed on the 15th of January 2026. Luck... or Something was released on the 20th of February 2026, and Atlantic called it her "boldest and most self-assured" project.

In January 2026 she played the Small Rooms, Big Nerves Tour in small theaters in London, Brooklyn, Toronto, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Tickets sold out instantly. Special editions of the album carried re-recordings of her older hits, each subtitled "(mine)." A Record Store Day LP called (Mine), due on the 18th of April 2026, collects them on silver vinyl. Only 10,000 copies were pressed for the United States and 10,800 worldwide. Luck... or Something also gave Duff her first number-one album in Australia, the first chart-topper of her career there.

  • Human Nature, released in 2001, was Duff's feature film debut, and she played the younger version of Patricia Arquette's character. In March 2003 she appeared in Agent Cody Banks opposite Frankie Muniz. Scott Foundas of Variety called her performance "charming" but thought she was "sidelined with little to do much of the time." Later in 2003 she played one of the twelve children of Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt in Cheaper by the Dozen, still her highest-grossing film. Nick Schager of Slant Magazine wrote that she "does nothing more than look perky and stylish."

A Cinderella Story, with Chad Michael Murray in 2004, was a moderate box office hit despite negative reviews. Raise Your Voice, the same year, was panned and unsuccessful. Several reviews criticized her vocals, and a number blamed what seemed to be a digitally enhanced voice. Those two films earned her a first Razzie nomination for Worst Actress. The Perfect Man, with Heather Locklear in 2005, was a box office success. Cheaper by the Dozen 2 brought a second Razzie nomination, and Mike Clarke of USA Today said she "just looks like she'd rather be in a different movie." In 2006 she co-starred with Haylie in Material Girls. The sisters shared a Razzie nomination for Worst Actress, her third in a row, and a nomination for Worst Screen Couple.

War, Inc. in 2008 cast her as Yonica Babyyeah, an "oversexed" Central Asian pop star, in a political satire that got a limited United States release. In According to Greta, in 2009, she played a suicidal and rebellious teen. Andrew Barker of Variety criticized her "child star" approach, while Robert Abele of the Los Angeles Times called her attempt to turn wholesomeness into rebellious snark "a valiant one." She had turned down a role on The CW drama 90210 to avoid teen projects. Instead she joined the third season of Gossip Girl as the actress Olivia Burke, who enrolls at New York University. Her character began a romance with Dan Humphrey, and a threesome with his friend Vanessa Abrams caused controversy. The following year she won a Teen Choice Award for Best Television Female Scene Stealer.

Beauty & the Briefcase, a 2010 ABC Family television film, made her an executive producer as well as its star. Its premiere drew 2.4 million viewers and pushed the network to an all-time high. In Bloodworth in 2011 she played Raven Halfacre, the teenage daughter of a promiscuous alcoholic. The Examiner wrote that the "biggest surprise performance in the film probably belongs to Hilary Duff."

On the 15th of January 2014, Duff signed on to co-star with Sutton Foster in the pilot of Younger. The series is based on a novel by Pamela Redmond Satran, and Darren Star created it for TV Land. Duff played Kelsey Peters, an "ambitious 20-something" who persuades Foster's character to work at a publishing firm. A 12-episode order came in April 2014. Younger premiered on the 31st of March 2015 and was her first starring television role since Lizzie McGuire. It brought People's Choice Award nominations for Favorite Cable TV Actress in 2016 and 2017. In July 2019 it was renewed for a seventh and final season, becoming the network's longest-running original series.

The Haunting of Sharon Tate was announced in February 2018, with Duff in the title role. Daniel Farrands wrote and directed, and Duff served as an executive producer. The film opened in April 2019 and won her Best Actress at the 2019 Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival. Mainstream critics panned it, and Variety called her "too contemporary" to portray Tate. Debra Tate, the sister of Sharon, expressed disapproval of the project. At the 40th Golden Raspberry Awards, Duff was named Worst Actress.

In April 2021 she announced that she would star in How I Met Your Father, a spinoff of How I Met Your Mother. She also produced it, playing Sophie. Hulu ordered ten episodes, and filming began in Los Angeles in August 2021. The series premiered on the 18th of January 2022 to mixed reception. Hulu renewed it on the 15th of February 2022 for a 20-episode second season. In September 2023 the service cancelled it after two seasons.

In August 2025 it was announced that Duff would star in and executive produce Pretty Ugly for Hulu. The drama is based on a novel of the same name by the American author Kirker Butler. Butler will write it, and Silver Tree will direct.

  • Stuff by Hilary Duff, a clothing line launched in March 2004, was sold at Target in the United States and Kmart in Australia. It also reached Zellers in Canada and Edgars Stores in South Africa, and it ran until 2007. In 2008 Duff lost control of the line, and it was discontinued.

Her first perfume, With Love... Hilary Duff, arrived in September 2006 through the Elizabeth Arden company. It was first sold only in Macy's department stores and later reached Europe, Japan and Canada. It ranked among the three best-selling fragrances launched in department stores in 2006. In August 2009 she debuted Femme for DKNY Jeans, a limited-time line she co-designed for women her own age.

In 2010 Duff set up a book deal with Simon & Schuster and wrote the young adult novel Elixir with Elise Allen. It was published in October 2010 and became a New York Times best-seller. Devoted followed in October 2011, and True in 2013 completed the trilogy. In March 2021 Random House Children's published her picture book My Little Brave Girl, illustrated by Kelsey Garrity-Riley. Duff said her daughter inspired it. It debuted at No. 8 on the Times list for children's picture books. A sequel, My Little Sweet Boy, came out in November 2023.

In January 2017 Duff became an investor in the cosmetic line Kopari Beauty. In January 2018 she launched Muse x Hilary Duff, an eyewear collaboration with GlassesUSA that became the best-selling brand in its premium category. That November she joined other celebrities as an investor in Cubcoat, a 2-in-1 children's product. She also launched a capsule collection under her sister Haylie's children clothing line, Little Moon Society. In January 2019 she and the comedian Chelsea Handler invested in the cosmetics line Nudestix, and Duff's make-up kit Daydreamer followed in September 2019.

In November 2019 Duff became co-owner and chief brand officer of two Naturalena Brands lines. Happy Little Camper makes baby products, and Veeda makes feminine care products. The partnership ended in a lawsuit, in which Duff alleged that the company used the COVID-19 pandemic as its reason to end the agreement. A settlement was reached in April 2022.

A collection of rompers for mothers and children, designed with Smash + Tess, launched on the 23rd of February 2021. It reportedly sold out within minutes. On the 18th of May 2022 she became Chief Mom Officer of the children's apparel company Carter's and designed a clothing capsule collection. In November 2023 she became Chief Brand Director of Below 60°, a line of home fragrance products. The line reached QVC in early 2025, and Duff has since appeared on the channel to promote it.

  • In 2006, a 19-year-old man and his 50-year-old roommate began stalking Duff, and she filed for restraining orders against both. She said the younger man threatened to kill himself to get her attention. She also said he threatened to "remove enemies" in his way, including her then-boyfriend Joel Madden. The younger man was later sentenced to 117 days in prison.

In 2014 Duff used Twitter to warn two photographers who had taken pictures of her son without her consent. She wrote, "I chose to let them off with a stern warning, next time I will not be so nice. #NoKidsPolicy." The hashtag refers to a bill pushed by the actresses Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner. In February 2020 she posted an Instagram video of a confrontation with a photographer at her son's football game. In it she says, "I'm asking you human to human, as a mother, if you don't know anyone here, can you please stop taking pictures of our children playing football this morning." Police dismissed her complaint because the incident happened at a public park, and she demanded that the law change. By November 2020 the video had been viewed more than 2 million times.

On Halloween 2016, Duff and then-boyfriend Jason Walsh wore Pilgrim and Native American costumes to a party. Social media users accused them of cultural appropriation, and both posted apologies. In May 2018 she used a series of Instagram stories to condemn a neighbor in her New York apartment building. She claimed he smoked "cigarettes and weed all night long" and that her "apartment reeks." Police confirmed that an altercation had occurred between the neighbor and Matthew Koma, and other neighbors, including a journalist, backed up her account.

In 2001 Duff was confirmed to be dating the teen star Aaron Carter, who later guest starred with her on Lizzie McGuire. Reports of a love triangle with the actress Lindsay Lohan drew media attention. The two continued on and off for three years. In July 2004-16-year-old Duff began dating Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden, who was 25. Her mother announced the relationship in a June 2005 interview with Seventeen magazine, and the couple split in November 2006. In 2015 Paper magazine observed that the media chose not to call the relationship illegal even though Duff was underage.

She began dating the Canadian hockey player Mike Comrie in 2007. They married on the 14th of August 2010 in Santa Barbara, California, and their son was born on the 20th of March 2012. They announced an amicable separation on the 10th of January 2014, and the divorce was finalized in February 2016. Duff and Matthew Koma dated for a few months and broke up in March 2017. In December she confirmed they had rekindled the relationship. They became engaged in May 2019 and married on the 21st of December 2019. They have three daughters, born in 2018-2021 and May 2024.

On the 31st of January 2005, Duff began taking classes at Harvard Extension School. That year she donated $250,000 to Hurricane Katrina victims and over 2.5 million meals to survivors in the southern United States. In August 2006 she visited a New Orleans elementary school and helped USA Harvest distribute meals. She also sits on the advisory board of the Audrey Hepburn Child Benefit Fund and belongs to Kids with a Cause. In October 2008 she appeared in a public service announcement for the Think Before You Speak campaign, made by the Ad Council and GLSEN to discourage anti-LGBT language among young people. In July 2009 she spent five days in Bogotá as a youth ambassador, handing out backpacks filled with food to children in need.

In November 2013 her campaign with Duracell in Canada donated 20,000 batteries to hospitals, and she visited The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. A 2017 essay for Marie Claire described the damage Hurricane Harvey did to her hometown. In 2018 she raised relief money for the Hanalei floods through sales of her Muse x Hilary Duff collection. In 2020 she and Koma donated to Australian bushfire relief. In October 2020 she launched the Veeda in Action campaign with the nonprofit PERIOD, donating period products to people in need.

  • The San Fernando Valley Business Journal said Metamorphosis was "giving Hollywood Records a needed shot in the arm." Two years of falling CD sales had forced the label to cut costs and change how it operated. Jeffrey Thomison, an analyst at Hilliard Lyons, credited Disney with "great synergy between their cable, film and music segments." Hollywood Records later tried to repeat the Duff formula with Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Bridgit Mendler. Cyrus, Gomez and Keke Palmer have all named Duff as an influence.

Her songs traveled through television too. "Come Clean" opened Laguna Beach, and "Sweet Sixteen" became the theme of the MTV series of the same name. Multiple dates on the Most Wanted Tour sold out in minutes. By 2014 she had sold over fifteen million albums. Forbes put her on its Celebrity 100 list every year from 2004 to 2007. In March 2025 Billboard ranked her at number 73 on its list of the Top 100 Women Artists of the 21st Century. She has won seven Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, four Teen Choice Awards and two Young Artist Awards.

Richard Huff of the New York Daily News called her "a 2002 version of Annette Funicello." He added that Lizzie McGuire was both a blessing and a burden, and said in 2003 that her public image was "tied" to the character. The character's reach went as far as plush figures and McDonald's Happy Meal toys. In 2005 Katie Long of the Centre of Parent/Youth Understanding wrote that Duff "is not like Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera... yet" but remains "someone that adolescent girls can relate to."

A 2007 Maxim cover declared that she had gone "from the queen of teen to breakout sex symbol." She placed at No. 23 on Maxim's annual Hot 100 Women list and peaked at No. 8 on the FHM list of the 100 Sexiest Women in 2008. The Associated Press called the shift "a clear move on Duff's part to put her Lizzie McGuire past behind her." Young Hollywood countered that she had "managed to maintain her sweet persona." Her Lucky Me Tour, announced on the 12th of February 2026, is scheduled to run from June 2026 until February 2027.
