Jennifer Garner
In August 2018, Jennifer Garner received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Variety praised her "radiant likability" and said she was second only to Tom Hanks. Garner is an American actress, and that honor capped a career with an unglamorous start.
Three children, a baby food company and a California law all belong to the same biography. So do canceled television shows, a Broadway run and a long fight over who may photograph a child. How did a college chemistry student from West Virginia end up with that star? And what did she do with the attention once she had it?
Jennifer Anne Garner was born on the 17th of April 1972 in Houston, Texas, and moved to Charleston, West Virginia at age three. Her father, William John Garner, held undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University and worked for Union Carbide. Her mother, Patricia Ann English, was a homemaker and later taught English at a local college.
Garner has two sisters and describes herself as a typical middle child. She tried to set herself apart from her accomplished older sister. Politics at home had two tones, since her father was "very conservative" and her mother "quietly blue".
Every Sunday the family attended a local United Methodist Church, and Garner also went to Vacation Bible School. As teenagers, she and her sisters were not allowed to wear makeup, paint their nails, pierce their ears or dye their hair. She has joked that her family's "take on the world" was "practically Amish".
At George Washington High School in Charleston, Garner learned the saxophone in the marching band. In 1990 she enrolled at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. There she changed her major from chemistry to theater and joined the sorority Pi Beta Phi.
In the fall semester of 1993, she studied at the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut. She graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater performance. Her college summers, meanwhile, belonged to summer stock theatre.
The Timber Lake Playhouse in Mount Carroll, Illinois, employed Garner in 1992, and the work was far from glamorous. Summer stock meant selling tickets, building sets and cleaning the venues as well as performing. She moved on to the Barn Theatre in Augusta, Michigan, in 1993 and the Georgia Shakespeare Festival in Atlanta in 1994.
Garner moved to New York City in 1995 and earned $150 per week as an understudy in the Roundabout Theatre Company production of A Month in the Country. That year she also made her first on-screen appearance, as Melissa Gilbert's daughter in the romance miniseries Zoya. To supplement her income, she worked as a hostess at a restaurant on the Upper West Side and did some babysitting. One of her charges was Madeleine Colbert, the daughter of Stephen and Evie Colbert.
The television work of 1996 was small but varied. Garner played an Amish woman in the television movie Harvest of Fire and a shopkeeper in the Western miniseries Dead Man's Walk. She appeared in the independent short film In Harm's Way. She also made one-off appearances in Spin City, Swift Justice and Law & Order.
After she moved to Los Angeles in 1997, Garner won her first leading role in the television film Rose Hill. Her first feature film appearance came in the period drama Washington Square. She also appeared in Mr. Magoo, the independent drama 1999 and Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry, though most of her performance in that last film was cut.
The year 1998 brought the first of several cancellations. Garner was cast as a series regular in the Fox drama Significant Others, but Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly thought there was "no center" to the character as played by Garner. Fox canceled the series after airing three of six filmed episodes. Her most significant role that year was in J. J. Abrams' college drama series Felicity, and she also appeared in an episode of Fantasy Island.
In 1999, Garner became a series regular in another Fox drama, Time of Your Life, but it was canceled midway through its first season. She kept working anyway, in the miniseries Aftershock: Earthquake in New York and in two episodes of the action drama series The Pretender.
The comedy Dude, Where's My Car? followed in 2000, with Garner playing the girlfriend of Ashton Kutcher's character. In 2001 she appeared opposite her husband Scott Foley in the drama Stealing Time and played a nurse in the war epic Pearl Harbor. Also in 2001, she was cast as the star of an ABC action thriller series.
The creator of Alias, J. J. Abrams, wrote the part of the secret agent Sydney Bristow with Garner in mind. The ABC action thriller aired for five seasons, from 2001 to 2006. Garner's salary began at $40,000 per episode and rose to $150,000 per episode by the end.
The awards followed. Garner won the Golden Globe Award for best actress in a television drama series, after four nominations. She won the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series, from two nominations. She also received four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for outstanding lead actress in a drama series.
Film offers arrived while the show was still on the air. Steven Spielberg called to offer her the role of a high-class call girl in Catch Me If You Can, released in 2002, and Garner has described the experience as "other-worldly". Spielberg had seen her in Alias and was sure that "she would be the next superstar". She shot her scene opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in a single day.
Her first co-starring film role came in the superhero film Daredevil, released in 2003. Garner played Elektra opposite Ben Affleck's Daredevil. The physical side of the part was something she had found "an aptitude for" while working on Alias.
Elvis Mitchell of The New York Times wrote that she "realizes Elektra more through movement than by way of her lumpy, obvious lines. She hasn't mastered the combat skill of tossing off bad material." Daredevil received mixed reviews but was a box office success. That year Garner also voiced herself in an episode of The Simpsons, and her first leading film role was only a year away.
Gary Winick directed 13 Going on 30 in 2004, and Garner had chosen him herself. The romantic comedy was her first leading film role. She played a teenager who finds herself trapped in the body of a thirty-year-old. Garner and Winick kept looking for other projects together until his death in 2011.
Manohla Dargis of the Los Angeles Times found her "startling" and wrote, "Whenever she's on screen you don't want to look anywhere else." Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly called the performance "utterly beguiling" and added, "You can pinpoint the moment in it when Garner becomes a star." The film grossed $96 million worldwide.
Elektra, a Daredevil spin-off, arrived in 2005 and was a box office and critical failure. Claudia Puig of USA Today concluded that Garner "is far more appealing when she's playing charming and adorable, as she did so winningly in 13 Going on 30". The romantic drama Catch and Release was filmed in 2005, between seasons of Alias, but was not released until early 2007. It failed to recoup its production budget.
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone praised Garner's ability "to blend charm and gravity" in that film. Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle felt that her "natural beauty and likability are still assets, she seems occasionally challenged by what should be an easy role".
Garner returned to work in 2007 after a one-year break, during which Alias ended and her first child was born. Her supporting role in Juno, as a woman desperate to adopt a child, was described by Kyle Buchanan of New York Magazine as a turning point in her career. He wrote, "She came into the movie a steely figure, and left it as the mother you'd give your own child to." Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly said Garner had never "been lovelier or more affecting".
That same year she played an FBI investigator in the action thriller The Kingdom. She was nursing her baby during the filming in Arizona and was hospitalized on two occasions with heatstroke.
In late 2007 and early 2008, Garner played Roxanne to Kevin Kline's Cyrano de Bergerac at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway. She prepared with vocal and movement coaches and took French lessons. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called her performance "captivating" and wrote, "If she's a tad stilted in the big tragic finale, her comic timing is impeccable." The play was recorded before a live audience and aired on PBS in 2008.
Garner co-starred in two romantic comedies in 2009. In Ghosts of Girlfriends Past she played the childhood friend of a famous photographer and womanizer. The film received lukewarm reviews but grossed $102.2 million worldwide. Michael Phillips of The Chicago Tribune found her "easy to like and sharp with her timing", yet he was disappointed to see her as "the love interest, which is not the same as a rounded character". Manohla Dargis, now writing for The New York Times, saw her as "less a co-star than a place holder".
Ricky Gervais cast her in his directorial debut, The Invention of Lying, because he wanted her against type. He described her as "always happy and always pleasant to everyone". She played the love interest of the first human able to lie, in a world where people can only tell the truth. Reviews were mixed and the film made $32.4 million worldwide. David Edelstein of New York Magazine called her "a dizzying comedienne".
Garry Marshall's ensemble romantic comedy Valentine's Day put her in scenes with Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel and Patrick Dempsey in 2010. It earned $56.2 million in its US opening weekend and $216.4 million worldwide. In 2011 she played a villainous, deranged bride in Arthur, a remake of the 1981 film, alongside Russell Brand and Helen Mirren.
In 2012 she played a mother for the first time on screen, in The Odd Life of Timothy Green. The film follows a magical pre-adolescent boy whose naivete profoundly affects the people of his town. It received mixed reviews and made a modest $56 million worldwide. That year she also produced and starred in the satirical comedy Butter, as an overly competitive, socially ambitious woman in a butter sculpturing competition in a small Iowa town.
Butter had a limited release and grossed $105,018. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called her "best in show". Scott Bowles of USA Today remarked, "Garner is a terrific actress, but here she's asked to cackle her lines in a voice a full octave above her natural one."
In 2013 Garner reunited with Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club, playing a doctor treating AIDS patients in Texas in the mid-1980s. The film drew significant acclaim and was a box office success. Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times asked whether the actress had deeper emotional layers to show, and found the question unanswered. David Edelstein wrote that she is "incapable of phoniness".
Then came the 2014 sports drama Draft Day, in which Garner played a fictional salary cap analyst for the Cleveland Browns. Mick LaSalle of The San Francisco Chronicle remarked, "It's not much of a role, but she's perfectly nice in it. Perhaps someday someone will give Garner a chance to be something other than perfectly nice."
Steve Carell was her co-star in the 2014 Disney adaptation of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, in which she played the mother of the title character. The film grossed $101 million worldwide. Sandie Angulo Chen of the Washington Post wrote, "Garner, who has long mastered the art of playing harried and overworked moms, is pleasantly frazzled."
Her other 2014 film was Men, Women & Children, directed by Jason Reitman, in which she played an overprotective mother. It made $2.2 million worldwide. Christopher Orr of The Atlantic called her character "the Snooping Mom from Hell".
Danny Collins, released in 2015, was inspired by the true story of the folk singer Steve Tilston and starred Al Pacino and Annette Bening. Garner played the wife of Bobby Cannavale's character. Stephanie Merry of The Washington Post felt she gave the movie "a powerful jolt of emotion".
In 2016 Garner played the mother of a young girl who had a near-death experience in the Christian drama Miracles from Heaven. The film grossed $73.9 million worldwide. Ken Jaworowski of The New York Times praised a "dedicated" and "heartfelt" performance. She also starred in the critically panned comedy Nine Lives and made an uncredited cameo in Mother's Day.
The drama Wakefield premiered at TIFF and reached theaters in May 2017. That year she also starred in The Tribes of Palos Verdes and in her friend Judy Greer's directorial debut, A Happening of Monumental Proportions.
In 2018 she co-starred in Love, Simon, an adaptation of the young-adult novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. Speaking about it in 2026, Garner said, "it's the most important film I've ever been a part of. I'm so grateful that (Greg Berlanti) asked me." She added, "Art helps you see yourself. It helps you see yourself reflected back. It helps you dream."
The same year, she voiced Mama Llama in Netflix's animated preschool series Llama Llama. She led the action-revenge film Peppermint, released on the 7th of September 2018. She also had a leading role in the HBO comedy series Camping, based on the British series of the same name.
In 2020 Garner starred in the Quibi miniseries Home Movie: The Princess Bride, a deliberately DIY, "fan made" recreation of the 1987 film. It was made in social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic to raise money for World Central Kitchen. She then produced and starred in the Netflix family comedy Yes Day, directed by Miguel Arteta and released in March 2021.
The science fiction action film The Adam Project in 2022 reunited her with Mark Ruffalo, her 13 Going on 30 co-star. That year she also made a guest appearance in an episode of the Amazon Prime Video series Upload.
In 2023 Garner became a series regular in the revival of the Starz sitcom Party Down. She also executive produced and starred as Hannah Hall in the Apple TV+ limited mystery drama The Last Thing He Told Me, based on the novel of the same name. In November 2023 Netflix released the family comedy Family Switch, in which she played Jess Walker.
Elektra returned on the 26th of July 2024, when Garner reprised the role of Elektra Natchios in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Deadpool & Wolverine. In March 2026 came the announcement of a Netflix remake of 13 Going on 30. Garner is set to executive produce it. Hannah Marks and Flora Greeson are writing, Brett Haley is directing, and Emily Bader and Logan Lerman are the stars.
On the 4th of April 2006, the compilation album Unexpected Dreams, subtitled Songs from the Stars, was released. Fourteen actors not generally known for singing took part. Garner sang a solo version of "My Heart Is So Full Of You" from Frank Loesser's The Most Happy Fella, which had originally been a duet. Her Alias co-star Victor Garber was also on the album.
Her other performances were uncredited. In a 2002 Alias episode titled "Rendezvous", she sang a version of "Since I Fell For You" with lyrics she wrote herself. When she hosted Saturday Night Live in 2003, with Beck as musical guest, she sang "My Funny Valentine". She later sang "Doin' It (All for My Baby)" in Mother's Day in 2016. In 2021 she sang the Four Tops' 1964 chart song "Baby I Need Your Loving" in Yes Day.
Brand deals ran alongside the film work. In 2007 Garner became a spokesperson for the skin care brand Neutrogena, and in 2012 for the food company Luvo. In 2013 she became the first celebrity spokesperson of the Italian fashion brand Max Mara. In late 2014, Capital One signed her as the face of its Venture Air Miles credit card.
In 2002, Garner filmed a 30-second television advertisement for her childhood friend Corey Palumbo, a Democratic candidate for the West Virginia House of Delegates. In 2006 she spoke at a rally in Pleasanton, California, for the Democratic congressional candidate Jerry McNerney. A year later she said she was "not a particularly outwardly political person", though she appeared in a global warming awareness video from the Center for American Progress Action Fund.
During the 2008 Democratic primary, she hosted two fund-raisers for Barack Obama. In 2014 she donated $25,000 to the campaign of Wendy Davis. In the 2016 presidential campaign, she hosted a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton in Bozeman, Montana, and attended voter registration and phone bank events for Clinton in Reno, Nevada.
Garner became an artist ambassador for Save the Children USA in 2009. She promotes national literacy, nutrition and early education efforts. Since 2014 she has served on the organization's board of trustees. She regularly visits families in its Early Steps to School Success program, which coaches parents to help children learn in the early years.
In 2011 she partnered with Frigidaire as part of that work. In 2013 she took her eldest daughter Violet to a Save the Children gala in New York. Garner said, "My husband and I have never taken our kids to a public event before, but I brought my daughter Violet, because... I want her to see the passionate commitment Mark Shriver and Hillary Clinton have to make the world a better place for everyone."
In 2014 she joined the Invest in Us campaign. In 2015 she appeared in A Path Appears, a PBS documentary about rural poverty among children in West Virginia.
Garner and John Foraker co-founded the organic, fresh baby food company Once Upon a Farm in 2018, and she is its chief brand officer. In 2019 it became the first refrigerated baby food available to WIC-eligible families. With Save the Children, Garner and her team work to bring "A Million Meals" to children in food insecure communities across America.
She is also part of the ownership group of Angel City FC in the National Women's Soccer League.
In August 2013, Garner testified before the California Assembly Judiciary Committee in support of a bill to protect celebrities' children from harassment by photographers. She told lawmakers, "There's an idea that because our pictures are everywhere that we are complicit in it. When really what happens is they're waiting outside our door every single day." Her six-year-old daughter spoke about her own experiences at a private event backing the bill.
The bill passed in September 2013 and is now California law. Photographs of children may still be taken, but behavior that "seriously alarms, annoys, torments, or terrorizes" them is illegal, as is "lying in wait" outside their activities.
In 2014 her then-husband Affleck argued for a United Kingdom-style system in which "you have to blur out the faces" of minor children in published photographs. That year Garner spoke in support of the "No Kids" policy adopted by many media organizations, which forbids publishing photos of celebrities' children. She called the paparazzi interest "gross" and said, "Our hope is maybe our kids won't be so recognizable in a few years."
In 2019, Garner recalled "a solid decade where there were five or six cars minimum, and easily up to 15 or 20 on the weekends, outside of my house at all times". The situation had improved since the law passed. Even so, "seven or eight" photographers still regularly wait outside her children's school, and she sometimes needs police assistance when they get too close.
Steven Burky stalked Garner from 2002 to 2003 and again from 2008 to 2009. Garner, Affleck and their daughter Violet obtained a restraining order in 2008. Burky was arrested in December 2009 outside Violet's preschool and charged with two counts of stalking. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
In March 2010 he was adjudicated insane and sent to California's state mental hospital. He was ordered to stay away from the Garner-Affleck family for 10 years if released.
Garner met her co-star Scott Foley on the set of Felicity in 1998. They married at their home on the 19th of October 2000 and separated in March 2003. She filed for divorce in May 2003, citing irreconcilable differences, and the papers were signed in March 2004. From August 2003 to mid-2004, she dated her Alias co-star Michael Vartan.
Garner began dating Ben Affleck in August 2004, after a friendship formed on the sets of Pearl Harbor and Daredevil. They married on the 29th of June 2005 in a private ceremony in Turks and Caicos. Victor Garber officiated, and the only guests were Garber and his partner, later husband, Rainer Andreesen.
The couple have three children, Violet Anne Affleck, Fin Affleck and Samuel Garner Affleck. They announced their intention to divorce in June 2015 and jointly filed legal documents in April 2017, seeking joint physical and legal custody. The divorce was finalized in October 2018. Garner supported Affleck through his struggles with alcoholism during and after the marriage. She has credited Al-Anon with changing "the dance" of their relationship.
Although Garner stopped attending church regularly after moving to Los Angeles, her three children were baptized as members of the United Methodist Church in her hometown of Charleston. In 2015 she and her family began attending weekly Methodist services in Los Angeles.
From mid-2018 to early 2020, Garner dated the businessman John C. Miller. After a year apart, the two resumed their relationship in 2021.
