  • Grimes is the stage name of Claire Elise Boucher, a Canadian musician whose name came from a mistake. When MySpace let artists list three musical genres, she typed "grime" in all three boxes. She had no idea what grime music actually was.

The label stuck, and so did the habit of working outside the rules. Her songs often draw on science fiction, feminism and fantasy. She has released five studio albums so far.

How does a self-taught musician, recording alone, end up on the best-of lists of the music press? What made her sound so hard to file under any single genre? And why would an artist with that success step back from music to look after her family?

  • Claire Boucher was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the 17th of March 1988. She was the first child of Sandy Garossino and Maurice Boucher. Her mother is a former Crown prosecutor and arts advocate. Her father is a former banker who now works in the business side of biotech. She is of French Canadian and Italian descent.

She and her younger brother, Mac, were raised Roman Catholic and attended Catholic school. She later said of that upbringing, "It totally influences everything I do. I think I have serious latent Catholic guilt issues."

Her parents divorced when she was 11 years old. Her mother then married Ravi Sidhoo, which gave her a multicultural upbringing and two stepbrothers. One of them raps as Jay Worthy and belongs to the hip hop duo LNDN DRGS.

In 2006 she graduated from Lord Byng Secondary School and moved to Montreal for McGill University's joint Bachelor of Arts and Science program. In early interviews she said she was in the electro-acoustics program. Later she claimed to have studied neuroscience. McGill expelled her in December 2010 for skipping classes.

In 2009 she and a friend tried to travel from Minneapolis to New Orleans down the Mississippi River in a houseboat they had built. Engine trouble and run-ins with law enforcement followed, and the city of Minneapolis impounded the boat. She says newspapers exaggerated parts of the story. T Bone Burnett narrates an animated video of the trip.

A quieter journey was already underway on her computer, where she had been writing songs under the name Grimes since 2007.

  • Geidi Primes, released in January 2010, was a concept album inspired by the Dune series. Grimes was self-taught in both music and visual art. Her second album, Halfaxa, followed in October of the same year. Both came out on Arbutus Records. After Halfaxa she began promoting her music and touring beyond Montreal.

In 2011 she placed five songs on her side of Darkbloom, a split 12-inch with d'Eon. That May she started opening for Lykke Li on a North American tour. In August, No Pain in Pop Records reissued her debut on CD and vinyl for the first time. In January 2012 she signed with the label 4AD.

Visions reached listeners on the 21st of February 2012, through Arbutus in Canada and 4AD in the United States. Its creation was extreme. She had been given a strict deadline far ahead of when the album was actually finished. She recorded most of it over three consecutive weeks, alone in her apartment in Montreal's Mile End.

She blacked out the windows, because she could not make music as easily in daylight. She described going nine days without sleep or food and taking "tons of amphetamines." She called the writing "equally enjoyable and tortuous," and felt the difficulty helped the album succeed.

Visions became her breakout record and appeared on many year-end lists. NME placed it among its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2013. It won the Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year, and she was nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2013 Junos. That year she also won the Artist of the Year Award at the Webbys.

Pitchfork named "Oblivion," the album's second single, the best song of 2012. It later ranked the song first on its 200 Best Tracks of the Decade So Far list in 2014. Emily Kai Bock and Grimes co-directed the video.

The Visions Tour ran from 2012 to 2014, with Born Gold, Myths, Elite Gymnastics and Ami Dang as supporting acts. In July 2012 she joined Diplo and Skrillex on the Full Flex Express Canadian Train Tour. In August 2012 she made her American television debut on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

In April 2013 she posted a statement describing the sexism she had met as a female musician. She was disappointed that her feminist stance was often read as anti-male. On producing her own albums, she said, "I don't wanna be just like the face of this thing I built, I want to be the one who built it."

In December 2013 she hired Jay-Z's management company, Roc Nation, to guide what came next.

  • On the 26th of June 2014, Zane Lowe premiered a track called "Go" on his Radio 1 show. Blood Diamonds produced it and appeared on it. Grimes had written it for Rihanna, who rejected it. Rolling Stone ranked it number fourteen on its Best Songs of 2014 list.

On the 8th of March 2015, she released a self-directed video for a demo of "Realiti," taken from an abandoned album. Jenn Pelly of Pitchfork gave it Best New Music and called it the "best new Grimes song since Visions."

Her next album was recorded with real instruments, a break from the synthesizers and samplers behind her earlier work. She taught herself guitar and violin for it. Of the keyboard she said, "I didn't want to play the keys, 'cause I don't want to be considered synth-pop." Rolling Stone heard a shift from hazy synth-pop toward an off-kilter sound of guitars and beats.

The lead single, "Flesh Without Blood," arrived on the 26th of October 2015. Its two-act video also covered "Life in the Vivid Dream." The album, Art Angels, followed in November 2015 and scored 88 out of 100 on Metacritic. Jessica Hopper of Pitchfork wrote that it showed a pop vision "incontrovertibly hers."

NME, Exclaim! and Stereogum each named Art Angels the best album of 2015. It reached number 1 on the Billboard US Top Alternative Album chart and number 2 on the Billboard Top Independent Album chart. In 2016 she won the International award at the Socan Annual Awards. In October of that year Harper's Bazaar named her Musician of the Year.

The album's videos formed a numbered series. "Kill V. Maim" was Act III, released on the 19th of January 2016. "California" was Act IV, released on the 9th of May 2016, in a slightly remixed version she felt was less "dissonant." In 2017, "Kill V. Maim" earned her a Juno Award for Video of the Year.

On the 2nd of February 2017, she premiered the high-budget, futuristic video for "Venus Fly" on Tidal. It starred Grimes and Janelle Monáe. It reached YouTube on the 9th of February and won Best Dance Video at the 2017 Much Music Video Awards.

On the 5th of October 2016, she and her friend Hana Pestle, known as Hana, released The Ac!d Reign Chronicles. This lo-fi series of seven videos mixed songs by both artists. They recorded it over two weeks while touring Europe. They shot it entirely on iPhones, with no crew except her brother Mac Boucher, who helped with filming.

The road kept her busy. In summer 2015 she toured with Lana Del Rey. That fall she headlined the Rhinestone Cowgirls Tour, with Nicole Dollanganger opening. In spring 2016 she took the Ac!d Reign Tour to Asia and Europe with Hana. She also opened for Florence and the Machine on select dates of the How Beautiful Tour.

Her songwriting reached other projects too. On the 3rd of August 2016, her song "Medieval Warfare" appeared on the soundtrack of the film Suicide Squad. She also co-wrote "Heaven" for Troye Sivan's album Blue Neighbourhood. On the 19th of October 2017 she and Hana covered Tegan and Sara's "Dark Come Soon."

A much gloomier message to her fans arrived four months later.

  • In February 2018, Grimes wrote on Instagram, "welp no music any time soon after all." The cause, it later emerged, was a clash with 4AD. She then said she would release two albums, separated by a stretch of time. The first, with 4AD, would be collaborative and full of "most glorious light." The second, on an undisclosed label, would explore "pure darkness and chaos."

She stayed busy as a guest. On the 10th of April 2018 she appeared on "Pynk" by Janelle Monáe, from the album Dirty Computer. On the 30th of May 2018 she featured on "Love4Eva" by the South Korean group Loona yyxy. She also composed the theme music for Netflix's animated series Hilda, which ran for 34 episodes.

On the 31st of October 2018, she appeared on "Play Destroy" from Poppy's album Am I a Girl? Soon after, Poppy accused Grimes of bullying and said she was "bullied into submission." Poppy also claimed Grimes pushed songwriters to sign non-disclosure agreements. Grimes replied, "Poppy, you dragged me into a disgusting situation and won't stop punishing me for not wanting to be a part of it." In 2023, Poppy's former creative director Titanic Sinclair posted a similar complaint about ghostwriters and NDAs.

On the 29th of November 2018, Grimes released "We Appreciate Power" with Hana. It was described as an industrial rock and nu metal song. She performed it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on the 10th of December. In January 2019 she appeared on "Nihilist Blues" by Bring Me the Horizon, from their album Amo.

On the 13th of August 2019, an Instagram ad for the Adidas by Stella McCartney Fall 2019 collection announced her next single. "Violence," with i_o, arrived with a video on the 5th of September 2019. On the 25th of October 2019, an unfinished version of the album leaked online. She released "So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth" on the 15th of November and "My Name Is Dark" on the 29th.

On the 13th of December 2019, she released "4ÆM." She performed it at the 2019 Video Game Awards to introduce herself as Lizzy Wizzy, a voiced character in Cyberpunk 2077. On the 12th of February 2020, she released "Delete Forever," partly inspired by the death of Lil Peep and the opioid crisis.

Miss Anthropocene came out on the 21st of February 2020. It is considered a loose concept album about an "anthropomorphic goddess of climate change," inspired by Roman mythology and villainy. Heather Phares of AllMusic called it a "brooding embodiment of climate change."

The releases kept coming. On the 1st of April 2020, she shared a video for "You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around" that held only herself and a green screen. She asked fans to finish it. On the 11th of December 2020, she and other artists, all using aliases, released a Cyberpunk 2077 DJ mix on Apple Music with two new Grimes songs, "Samana" and "Delicate Weapon."

On the 18th of December 2020, she swapped the album cover on every streaming platform for a painting by Rupid Leejm that she had commissioned. She said she had polled people who advised against it and wished she had trusted her gut. On the 1st of January 2021, Miss Anthropocene: Rave Edition arrived, with remixes from BloodPop, Channel Tres, Richie Hawtin and Modeselektor.

Then, on the 5th of March 2021, Grimes signed with Columbia Records.

  • On the 8th of May 2021, Grimes appeared on Saturday Night Live as Princess Peach, opposite host Elon Musk as Wario. She was uncredited. The sketch aired in the episode titled Elon Musk/Miley Cyrus.

That June she opened a Discord server called Grimes Metaverse Super Beta and began a podcast, Homo Techno, with science communicator Liv Boeree. She used the server to tease songs, including "Shinigami Eyes" and a collaboration with the British DJ Chris Lake. In July 2021 she told Billboard that her next concept album would be a "space opera."

That same month she was named a judge on Alter Ego, alongside will.i.am, Alanis Morissette, Nick Lachey and Rocsi Diaz. Contestants used motion capture to appear as "dream avatars." The show ran for 11 episodes. She also had a cameo in the short film Discord: The Movie, with Awkwafina, Danny DeVito and J Balvin.

On the 30th of September 2021, she released "Love," written in response to her separation from Musk and the media attention that followed. On the 3rd of December 2021, she named her sixth album Book 1 and released the single "Player of Games." From the 26th of January to the 8th of February 2022, the game Rocket League ran a Grimes-themed event called Neon Nights.

In August 2022, Vogue Plus China put her on its cover. She confirmed a collaboration with The Weeknd called "Sci Fi." That summer she opened select dates for Swedish House Mafia's Paradise Again Tour, which ran from the 29th of July to the 13th of November 2022. In September 2022 she said she had twenty songs for the album.

In January 2023 she said her career was now a "side quest." Her children, friends and family came first. On the 31st of January 2023, she was announced as a guest, alongside Dido, on Caroline Polachek's "Fly to You." It appears on the album Desire, I Want to Turn Into You, released on the 14th of February 2023.

In April 2023 she invited people to use her voice in AI-made songs, saying she liked the idea of "killing copyright." On the 8th of June 2023 she released "Welcome to the Opera" with Anyma, also known as Matteo Milleri of the Italian duo Tale of Us. On the 28th of July she released "I Wanna Be Software" with the producer Illangelo. In December 2023 it was announced that she voiced an interactive AI toy named "Grok," made with the company Curio.

In April 2024 she DJed at Coachella, and the set was cut short. Her tracks were playing at double their normal tempo. She restarted songs several times and said she was having trouble "doing the math." She blamed work she had outsourced to others under time pressure. Media called it the "worst performance in the history of Coachella."

On the 20th of September 2024, she released a remix of "Supernova" by the K-pop group Aespa for ScreaM Records. On the 29th of October she remixed "Image" by Magdalena Bay, a duo that had credited her as an inspiration.

On the 24th of February 2025, she uploaded two demos to SoundCloud, "The Fool" and "I Don't Give a Fuck, I'm Insane." On the 28th of February she released "Machine Girl," a song she co-produced for Adéla, and cameoed in its video with Sofia Wylie. On the 17th of October 2025 she released "Artificial Angels," with a video three days later. On the 31st of October 2025 she was featured on "Entwined" by Sub Focus.

In April 2026, she began teasing a sixth studio album, Psy Opera. Explaining her time away to Interview Magazine, she said she had thought, "I'm just going to be a stay-at-home mom. Screw this." No release date was given, because she said the album was "not quite done."

  • Critics have given Grimes's music a long list of labels, from witch house and glo-fi to bedroom pop, art pop and dance-pop. The Guardian summed it up: "By sounding a little like everything you've ever heard, the whole sounds like nothing you've ever heard." Dazed said she had always thrived on being "too pop for indie and too indie for pop."

Her voice is a soprano, which the Daily Telegraph called "sweet, thin and hazy." She builds songs by looping and layering vocals, and many contain more than fifty vocal tracks. The Guardian found her lyrics "elusive and impressionistic." Her themes include science fiction, feminism and climate change.

She called Miss Anthropocene "mostly ethereal nu metal." On "So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth," she experimented with AI-generated music using the NSynth neural synthesizer.

She has called her own style "ADD music," because it shifts often and sharply. "I go through phases a lot," she said. A 2007 album, Person Pitch by Panda Bear, "jumpstarted" her mind. Before it she had made only atonal drone music with little sense of songwriting. After hearing it once, she could write songs almost at once.

Comparisons to Björk, Julianna Barwick, Siouxsie Sioux and Enya have followed her. Tastemakers Magazine called her an "alien love-child of Aphex Twin and ABBA." While making Visions, she was listening to Aphex Twin, Black Dice, Outkast, Nine Inch Nails, Burial, TLC and Mariah Carey. She said she wanted caustic beats and tight vocal harmonies.

Hildegard of Bingen inspired the theories behind Halfaxa. Art Angels drew on Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and The Godfather movies, and one song began as a glam rock idea inspired by David Bowie and Queen. She picked a Blink-182 live DVD on Amoeba Records' "What's In My Bag?" and called Cocteau Twins one of the first alternative bands she loved.

The visual side is her own work. Grimes designs her album art, gig fliers, comic book covers and merchandise. Japanese anime and manga influence her, along with the comic artists Charles Burns and Daniel Clowes. Her illustrations have appeared in gallery shows, including one at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. She made an alternate cover for Image Comics' The Wicked + The Divine.

From the 23rd to the 25th of March 2012, she staged an art show and charity auction of paintings and drawings at the Audio Visual Arts gallery in New York City. In 2013 she designed a capsule collection of t-shirts for Hedi Slimane's Saint Laurent. That year she also curated a two-day event at the same gallery, with a silent auction for the Native Women's Association of Canada.

In early 2021 she sold original digital art as non-fungible tokens for $5.8 million. In May 2022 she announced she was joining the board of Unicorn DAO, a group that funds and develops projects led by women and non-binary people.

  • Mac Boucher, her brother, helped make several of her videos, including "Violence," "Go," "Realiti" and "Venus Fly." Her stepbrother Jay Worthy joined her on "Christmas Song," which appeared on the Rough Trade bonus disc of Visions.

Grimes has been diagnosed with autism and ADHD. She says she was earlier misdiagnosed with restless legs syndrome and schizoaffective disorder. She describes motor-skill difficulties, noting that she once performed worse than her own children on every test when she went to check on them. She embraces her distinctive lisp and has no wish to change it through speech therapy. In 2014 she wrote a blog post about her aversion to hard drugs.

In 2015 she said being called a feminist musician "really genders" her in a way she does not identify with. That year she also wrote on Twitter, "I vibe in a gender-neutral space so I'm kinda impartial to pronouns." In 2018 she said she was "put off by the word 'woman'" as a description of herself. In 2021 she called herself "female-ish." In 2023 she told an interviewer, "I kinda like the patriarchy," while adding that male-dominated spaces without women can turn toxic.

In 2007, at a first-year dorm party at McGill, she met Devon Welsh, then lead vocalist of Majical Cloudz. They were on and off until 2010. From 2012 to 2018 she was with the electronic musician Jaime Brooks, who supported her on the Visions Tour.

In 2018 she began a relationship with Elon Musk. They met after discovering on Twitter that each had independently made the same pun, linking Rococo to the thought experiment Roko's basilisk. Their son was born in May 2020. His first name, "X Æ A-12," would have broken California rules, so it became "X Æ A-Xii." The name drew criticism as impractical. In 2021 they had a daughter through surrogacy. The singer Go Won is the eldest son's godmother.

They "semi-separated" in September 2021. In January 2022 she said, "I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we're very fluid." In March 2022 she called him her "best friend and the love of my life." In September 2023 a third child was reported, and that month she sued Musk in a California court over parental rights. Musk allegedly fought to keep the hearing closed and asked for documents to be sealed.

In January 2025, she attended a Washington, D.C. party with Curtis Yarvin celebrating Donald Trump's second inauguration. Soon afterward, Musk was accused of performing a Nazi salute at the event. She denounced Nazism and the "far alt-right." In February 2025 she criticised him for bringing their eldest son to public events after the boy was filmed in the Oval Office.

From March 2024 to August 2025, she was in a relationship with the Italian-American DJ Anyma, her collaborator on "Welcome to the Opera" the year before.
