Ghost of Yōtei
Ghost of Yōtei, a 2025 action-adventure game from Sucker Punch Productions, begins with its heroine as a girl pinned against a burning ginkgo tree by her own father's katana. Her family has been slaughtered. Her home has been destroyed. The people who did it walk away believing she will die there. She does not die, and sixteen years pass before she returns to the place where it happened. Who were the people who left her there? What does a person become after carrying one terrible night for sixteen years? And can a game built around swordplay say something honest about what revenge costs? To answer those questions, this documentary follows a woman named Atsu through the mountains and plains of northern Japan.
The year is 1603, and the place is Ezo, the island known today as Hokkaido, in the shadow of Mount Yōtei. The story unfolds 329 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, the 2020 game that this one follows as a standalone sequel. Atsu, a wandering mercenary, has come home with a list of names.
Those names belong to the Yōtei Six. At their head stands Lord Nariaki Saito, a renegade samurai who has declared himself the Shogun of the North. He is raising a rebel army to claim all of Ezo, and the Matsumae clan, loyal to the real Shogun, has gone to war against him. Beneath Saito serve the Snake, whose name is Yukiharu, the Oni, Lord Hyozo, and the Kitsune, Dojun. The last two are Saito's own sons, Sakichi, called the Spider, and Ukichi, called the Dragon.
Atsu draws first blood on the Snake, whom she finds drunk in a backwater village. The fight leaves her mortally wounded, yet she recovers. Frightened witnesses begin calling her the onryō, a vengeful spirit, and Saito puts a bounty on her head. Creative director Nate Fox saw logic in the name: "People think there's no way this woman could have taken out members of the Yōtei Six unless she is a supernatural creature."
The player may hunt the Yōtei Six in almost any order. Only the Snake must fall first, and Saito must come last.
Hanbei, once the best bounty hunter in Ezo and an old friend of Atsu's father, teaches her to fight with two katana at once. Armed with the new skill, she tries to assassinate Saito at his training camp and fails. Saito, astonished that she is alive, challenges her to a duel. The Matsumae attack the stronghold before it can begin, and Hanbei pulls her to safety. He urges her to give up her vendetta, while Saito slips into hiding.
While chasing the Oni across the Ishikari Plain, Atsu makes a discovery that changes everything. Her twin brother Jubei also survived the massacre. The Matsumae clan rescued him, and he has risen to become the samurai officer Lord Kitamori. Jubei loves his sister, but he is torn between that love and his duty to the Matsumae. He is also appalled by her recklessness and her disregard for the prisoners the Oni holds. After a failed attempt on the Oni at Ishikari Castle, he walks away from her in frustration.
A former Oni Raider named Mad Goro is the next lead, but the Oni's forces reach the Matsumae camp first and slaughter the samurai there. The siblings reconcile and learn of a secret passage into the castle. Together they incite a prisoner rebellion, kill the Oni, and help burn the castle down.
A different kind of ally arrives with Oyuki, a traveling shamisen performer. She helps Atsu track the Kitsune, who is producing wolfsbane poison at his fortress. When the Kitsune fails to recognize Atsu, she realizes why. Oyuki was the original Kitsune, Saito's shinobi, and she was the one who let a young Atsu escape after Saito hanged Atsu's mother. Disillusioned by the Night of the Burning Tree, Oyuki planned to betray Saito. Her disciple Dojun betrayed her first, took her title, and Saito branded her as punishment. After a duel, Atsu forgives her. Oyuki teaches Atsu shinobi techniques, supplies the antidote to Dojun's toxin, and helps kill him.
Back at the family home, Jubei meets Oyuki and nearly attacks her when he learns the truth. Then she delivers worse news. Saito owns an entire fleet of warships, and he means to strike the Matsumae heartland.
Teenage Kiku appears at an execution line, where Jubei saves her and reveals she is his daughter. He takes her to the safety of Matsumae Castle, and Atsu and Oyuki go looking for Saito's sons. A try at the Dragon near a lighthouse fails because he is too cautious. Atsu then catches the Spider as he re-enacts the Night of the Burning Tree as a stage play. Enraged, she massacres the Saito forces around him, yet she stops short of killing him. Oyuki delivers him to Matsumae Castle.
The Matsumae plan a public execution of the Spider to lure out the Dragon. They are outmaneuvered when Saito's ships and a counterattack hit the castle. Jubei and Oyuki rush to defend it and beg Atsu to follow. She stays behind to kill the Dragon instead. By the time she fights through to the castle, it is destroyed, and both of them are missing. The Spider escapes, recovers his brother's body, and is disowned by Saito for letting the Dragon die.
Atsu finds Kiku safe at a nearby temple and takes her to the family home. There her certainty begins to crack. Kiku, hungry for revenge herself, lambasts Atsu for abandoning Jubei and Oyuki. At the Saito clan cemetery, Atsu finds the Spider, who tells her that Jubei and Oyuki were captured. He also says he lost an infant sister after Atsu's father betrayed Saito. Atsu spares him in a duel. He offers to lead her to his father's castle and then leaves Ezo for the mainland.
After Atsu frees Jubei and Oyuki, she learns that Saito waits at her family home with Kiku as his hostage. Atsu and Jubei duel him together, and Jubei takes a fatal wound. Atsu disarms Saito and pins him to the family ginkgo tree with both of their swords. When he begs her to kill him, she refuses and lets him bleed out. She promises the dying Jubei that she will raise Kiku in his place. Seeing her younger self in the girl, she embraces her. Atsu retires the onryō and settles into a quiet life as Kiku's guardian.
Atsu starts the game with one katana, and almost everything else is earned. Over time she gains the yari, a spear, and the kusarigama, a chain-sickle. She also gains the ōdachi, a two-handed greatsword, and the ability to dual-wield katana. At range she has the hankyu and yumi bows, familiar from Tsushima, as well as the tanegashima, a matchlock rifle, and the tanzutsu, a matchlock pistol.
Every weapon answers a different kind of enemy. The stance system of the earlier game is gone, replaced by a weapon counter system in which each new tool gives more options against more enemy types. Combination attacks must be parried, and unblockable attacks must be evaded, as they did in Tsushima. New to Yōtei are disarming strikes that can knock a weapon from Atsu's hand or an enemy's. Dropped weapons can be picked up and thrown at foes.
The grappling hook, which Tsushima held back, is available from the very first hour. Atsu can also summon a wolf to help in an open fight or a stealth mission. The designers wanted the whole system to feel like a classic samurai movie, and that goal shapes the final feature of the game's look.
Atsu can set up a camp almost anywhere in Ezo. There she restores her health and spirit, cooks meals that boost her stats, crafts ammunition, and trades resources and equipment with vendors. Bounty hunting for money is a new activity, and weapon mastery quests unlock new abilities. Familiar pastimes from Tsushima return, including bathing in onsen, cutting bamboo, and following foxes to find charms.
Three activities are new. Sumi-e painting takes the place of the haiku composition in Tsushima. Players can gamble at zeni hajiki, and they can learn new songs on the shamisen. The instrument also steers the guiding wind, which points Atsu toward her objectives and can be changed by playing.
The land itself is also part of the experience. Dynamic weather draws on the real climate around Mount Yōtei, with snow, rain, and aurora borealis.
For the look of a film, there is Kurosawa Mode, based on the black-and-white films of Akira Kurosawa. Two further modes take their inspiration from the work of Takashi Miike and Shinichirō Watanabe.
Pre-production on Ghost of Yōtei began in 2021. Rob Davis, the studio's Campaign Director, said the team wanted an origin story so that the narrative, the gameplay, and the character could all grow together. Creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell shaped the pitch. Fox concentrated on story and character, including the theme of vengeance. Connell, a former art director, concentrated on world-building and wanted Hokkaido as the setting.
The team visited more than a dozen locations across northern Japan. One moment stood out as "stunning": the view of Mount Yōtei reflected across Lake Tōya. In Shiretoko National Park they recorded nature sounds for the game. Cultural advisors guided the work, and the developers visited important cultural sites and consulted the local Ainu people during their trips.
The directors believed a female protagonist was essential to the theme of an "underdog defying society's expectations." Fox also wanted the game to keep what made Tsushima special, which he described as "transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan." Compared with that earlier game, the studio set out to make Ezo more varied, with more unique things to do.
Sony Interactive Entertainment published the game. It was revealed at a PlayStation State of Play presentation on the 24th of September 2024. It was nominated for Most Anticipated Game at the Game Awards in November 2024. On the 23rd of April 2025, Sony confirmed a release date of the 2nd of October 2025 for the PlayStation 5.
On Metacritic, Ghost of Yōtei earned "generally favorable" reviews. OpenCritic reported that 94% of critics recommended it. GameSpot's Richard Wakling called it an improvement on Tsushima, praising its "gripping story, rewarding exploration, and fantastic combat." IGN's Michael Higham praised the setting and mechanics. Chris Tapsell of Eurogamer admired the "great swordplay and heartfelt storytelling."
Critics were less united on the story's shape. Wakling called it "a fairly conventional revenge tale, but one that's well told," and Higham described it as "predictable but well-executed." Polygon's Giovanni Colantonio found it "more personal" and standalone compared with its predecessor. GamesRadar's Andrew Brown called it a "more than worthy successor" that struggled with pacing near its end, and VideoGamer's Tom Bardwell called the pacing "questionable." Tapsell was the sharpest. He criticized the "poor sidequests and dated open world," said the game would have been "better served as a linear action game," and called the side quests "prehistoric."
Players responded strongly before launch. By the 20th of September 2025, the game was among the top sellers on the PlayStation Store's pre-order charts, first in Australia and Canada. By the 27th of September, it had reached number one in thirteen countries. In October 2025, it was the third best-selling title in the United States, behind Battlefield 6 and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Famitsu estimated 120,196 retail copies sold in Japan during its debut week, from the 29th of September to the 5th of October. Sony's financial reports put total sales at about 3.3 million units as of the 2nd of November 2025. It finished as the 11th best-selling game of the year in the United States.
Awards followed. The game appeared among the nominees at the Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards 2025, the Game Developers Choice Awards, and the British Academy Games Awards. Erika Ishii's performance as Atsu was nominated for lead performer at several of them. At the 29th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, the game won Adventure Game of the Year.
The story of Ezo did not end there. A multiplayer mode called Ghost of Yōtei: Legends arrived on the 10th of March 2026 as a free update for everyone who owned the base game. It offers two-player story missions and four-player survival matches against gigantic, monstrous versions of the Yōtei Six and enemies inspired by Japanese mythology.
