  • The land of Heathmoor lies in ruins after a natural catastrophe pits the most fearsome warriors against one another. A bloodthirsty warlord named Apollyon believes the people have grown weak and seeks to create an age of all-out war through manipulation. She murders her rivals among the knights of the Blackstone Legion to seize control. Her goal is to ensure continuous sparks of conflict between the Iron Legion, the Warborn, and the Chosen from the Myre. The perspective shifts between characters within each faction as events unfold and battles are waged. Apollyon works to sow seeds of perpetual war while creating stronger men to rule over the weak. During the chaos, she kills the Dawn Empire's ruler and his daimyos who refuse to fight. This sets the stage for a world where survival depends on strength alone.

  • Ubisoft Montreal began development of For Honor in 2012 with the goal of creating a strategy-action game inspired by shooters. The creative director described the final product as a shooter with swords due to its structural similarities to first-person shooters. Players enter a dueling mode when they encounter other players or player-like AI. They aim at their opponent with their weapon and choose to rest or move it in one of three directions: left, right, and top. This mechanic allows them to block incoming attacks and start attacks of their own from the chosen direction. On-screen hints reflect the attack position of opponents so players can choose the correct blocking position. The system aims to allow players to feel the weight of the weapon in their hand. Friendly fire is featured in the game allowing teammates to damage each other with melee attacks or feats.

  • Players choose from five distinct factions within the lore of Heathmoor including Knights, Vikings, Samurai, Wu Lin, and Outlanders. Each faction possesses unique weapons skills and fighting styles that define their role in battle. The Iron Legion represents knights while the Warborn represents vikings. The Dawn Empire stands for samurai and the Wu Lin draws inspiration from ancient Chinese culture. A fifth group called the Outlanders has no cultural links to other factions let alone each other. There are currently 37 playable heroes divided into four classes: Vanguard Assassin Heavies and Hybrid. The Vanguard class is well balanced with excellent offense and defense capabilities. Assassins are fast and efficient in dueling enemies but deal much less damage to multiple foes. Heavies are more resistant to damage and suitable for holding capture points though their attacks are slow. Hybrids combine two of the three aforementioned types and use uncommon skills.

  • Post-launch updates introduced new game modes like Faction War and Arcade while expanding the roster of playable characters through seasonal expansions. The Marching Fire expansion added a solo or two-player co-op arcade mode available as of patch 2.50.0. This mode features sequences of chapters within quests where players face one to three enemy AI opponents. Five difficulties exist represented by recommended gear scores ranging from zero to 144 at legendary level. Weekly Quests offer fixed difficulty challenges unique to each week including modifiers opponents and maps. Players earn experience steel and complete orders daily missions within this mode. The Faction War stretches across all platforms using war assets deployed to defend allied territories or conquer neighboring ones occupied by enemy factions. Territories controlled update every six hours while each round lasts two weeks and seasons last ten weeks. Map variants change depending on whether they are under Knight Viking or Samurai control.

  • A single-player story follows the Warden and Orochi as they unite warring factions to stop Apollyon's plan to create an age of eternal conflict. The warmonger Apollyon takes control of knights after murdering her rivals who fight for people of Ashfeld. Her second-in-command Holden Cross helps the Warden defeat Blackstone Legion captain Ademar before leaving with him. During his time in Apollyon's army the Warden defends against Viking raiders of the Warborn but soon realizes she cares nothing about protecting people. She attacks settlements in Valkenheim leaving only enough food and supplies to fight over. A powerful warrior known as Raider unites warriors of various clans under the Warborn banner. He kills brutal raiders Ragnar and Siv the Ruthless before retaking a stronghold from knights. The Raider leads assault on Samurai killing General Tozen causing them to retreat back to their greatest city. In chaos Apollyon murders the Imperial family forcing Daimyos to fight one another for supreme rulership.
