Rosé (singer)

  • Rosé, born Roseanne Park, did not take her father's idea seriously at first. He suggested she audition for a South Korean record label, and she assumed he was joking. The distance was enormous, and becoming a singer overseas looked close to impossible. In 2012 she went to the audition in Sydney anyway. Out of 700 participants, she came first. Within about a decade, her songs would top charts on several continents. How does a schoolgirl raised in Australia reach that point? What does a trainee actually do while she waits for a debut? And why would a singer at the peak of her success sign her solo career to a different company?

  • Roseanne Park, whose Korean name is Park Chae-young, was born on the 11th of February 1997 in Auckland, New Zealand. Her parents were South Korean immigrants, and she has an older sister. In 2004, when she was seven, the family moved to Melbourne, Australia, where she spent her childhood. She sang in church choirs and learned to play guitar and piano. She attended Kew East Primary School and then Canterbury Girls' Secondary College, in the Melbourne suburb of Canterbury, Victoria. She left school before year 11 because a South Korean label had come calling.

Two months after the Sydney audition, she had signed with YG Entertainment as a trainee and moved to Seoul. She already liked the music the company made. In that same year, 2012, her voice appeared on labelmate G-Dragon's song "Without You", from his EP One of a Kind. Her name was kept off the release, and the credit surfaced only after she was announced as a member of Blackpink. The song reached number ten on South Korea's Gaon Music Chart and number 15 on the Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100.

On the 22nd of June 2016, after four years of training, she was revealed as the final member of Blackpink. The group debuted on the 8th of August 2016 with the single album Square One. It contained the chart-topping single "Whistle" and a second single, "Boombayah". In 2018, Blackpink signed with Interscope Records in a global partnership with YG Entertainment.

Television gave her a separate stage. On King of Masked Singer, her vocal performance drew a warm audience reception. She said she had not known whether viewers would like her singing, and that she felt happy and relieved afterward. She later performed on the second season of Fantastic Duo, where the production staff said the appearance was meant to show a vocal appeal different from Blackpink's. On the 1st of June 2020, it was announced that she would debut as a soloist once the group released its first Korean-language full-length album.

  • On the 30th of December 2020, her label told the South Korean outlet Osen that filming for her debut music video would begin in mid-January 2021. A promotional teaser followed on the 26th of January. It promised a preview of the solo debut during Blackpink Livestream Concert: The Show on the 31st of January.

The single album R arrived on the 12th of March 2021. In its first week it sold 448,089 copies, the highest figure for a Korean female soloist. The music video for the lead single "On the Ground" drew 41.6 million views in 24 hours. That broke a record held for almost eight years by her former labelmate Psy, for his song "Gentleman".

The Billboard charts told a larger story. "On the Ground" debuted at number one on both the Billboard Global 200 and the Global Excl. U.S. chart. No Korean solo artist had ever topped either one. She also became the first artist to reach number one on a Billboard Global chart both as a soloist and as part of a group. Together with the video record, this earned her two Guinness World Records.

The song was a hit in several other markets. It reached number four on the Gaon Digital Chart and number three on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100. On the Billboard Hot 100 it peaked at number 70, the highest placing for a female K-pop soloist. In the United Kingdom it entered the singles chart at number 43, a first for a female K-pop soloist. In Canada it debuted at number 35.

On the 24th of March, Show Champion gave her the first music show win of her solo career, and she collected five more for the same single. The second single, "Gone", had its video released on the 5th of April. It peaked at number six on the Gaon Digital Chart and number 29 on the Billboard Global 200.

Blackpink's second studio album, Born Pink, came out on the 16th of September 2022. It carried her pop-disco solo "Hard to Love" as its fifth track, and she also received a songwriting credit on the fourth track, "Yeah Yeah Yeah".

  • On the 5th of December 2023, YG Entertainment announced that Rosé and the rest of Blackpink had renewed their contracts for group activities. Individual deals were still under discussion. On the 29th of December, the label confirmed that she and her bandmates would not proceed with individual contracts there. Her solo path now ran somewhere else.

In April 2024 she released "Final Love Song" as the theme for the survival reality show I-Land 2: N/a. On the 17th of June, The Black Label disclosed that it was in talks with her about an exclusive contract. The company was founded by Teddy, Blackpink's main producer, and is an associate of YG. The next day it was confirmed that she had signed a management contract. On the 26th of September came word of a solo deal with Atlantic Records. That year she also recorded a cover of Coldplay's 2008 song "Viva la Vida" for the trailer and finale of the second season of the Apple TV+ series Pachinko.

The release that changed her standing came on the 18th of October. "APT.", a collaboration with the American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars, was the lead single from her debut studio album. It became her second number one on both the Billboard Global 200 and the Global Excl. U.S. chart. It also topped the charts in several countries, including New Zealand and Australia.

In Australia she became the first female K-pop soloist to reach number one on the ARIA Singles Chart. In the United Kingdom the song peaked at number two, the first top-ten placing for a female K-pop soloist. In the United States it debuted at number eight and rose to number three on the Billboard Hot 100. That made her the first female K-pop artist to enter the chart's top ten. It also entered the top ten of Billboard Radio Songs, which brought another Guinness World Record.

Streaming numbers followed. By November 2024 she had more than 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify, the highest total for any K-pop act on the platform. The song passed 1 billion Spotify streams in 100 days, the fastest for a K-pop track. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry named it the best-selling global single of 2025. That was the first time its global singles chart was topped by an artist from outside North America or Europe, and the first time a winning single used non-English lyrics.

  • On the 22nd of November, she pre-released "Number One Girl", the second single from her debut studio album. Three days later came the announcement of a global publishing administration deal with Warner Chappell Music. The album Rosie followed on the 6th of December 2024, together with its third single, "Toxic Till the End".

Rosie debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, the highest placing for a female K-pop artist and another Guinness World Record. It entered the UK Albums Chart at number four, the first top-five album there by a female K-pop soloist. In Australia it opened at number two on the ARIA Albums Chart. "Toxic Till the End" debuted at number 15 on the Billboard Global 200 and number six on the Global Excl. U.S. chart. That gave her a third top-ten hit on the latter.

The year 2025 brought a break from convention. She withdrew from the Korea Music Copyright Association, the first departure by a major K-pop artist in 22 years. Her contract with the organisation ended on the 31st of January 2025. On the 1st of May she was announced for F1 the Album, the soundtrack to the film F1, and her song "Messy" arrived on the 8th of May. On the 27th of June she released "On My Mind" with Alex Warren, from his debut album You'll Be Alright, Kid. In September she signed with the talent agency WME for worldwide representation in her solo music career.

At the MTV Video Music Awards on the 7th of September 2025, "APT." won Song of the Year, a first for a K-pop act. The song earned three nominations at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. No Korean or K-pop song had ever received more. She was the first K-pop artist nominated in a Big Four category as a lead artist, and she performed at the ceremony in Los Angeles on the 1st of February 2026. The nominations earned her two more Guinness World Records.

On the 28th of February 2026, she won International Song of the Year at the Brit Awards. No K-pop artist had won at that ceremony before. Her shelf already held six MAMA Awards, three Melon Music Awards, two Seoul Music Awards, a Golden Disc Award and an Asia Artist Award. She won the daesang, the grand prize, for Song of the Year at both the Asia Artist Awards and the MAMA Awards.

  • Vogue has described Rosé's voice as an "electric" soprano. Fans nicknamed it "the golden voice", and the K-pop industry has noted its distinct timbre since her debut with Blackpink.

After her appearance on Fantastic Duo 2, the South Korean singer Gummy called the voice "so unique". Rosé has named Gummy as a musical role model. In a radio interview she also named her labelmate Taeyang of Big Bang. The American singer Tori Kelly, she has said, inspired her style.

When R came out, the critic Kim Yoon-ha praised her husky, memorable tone for conveying sorrow. She said it suited the themes of YG Entertainment. In her view, Rosé's delicate yet powerful delivery could turn superficial lyrics into something profound.

The music critic Seo Seongdeok, writing for Weverse Magazine, placed her among the "pop queens of today". He argued the pop landscape of 2024 would have looked completely different without them. He credited her with exploring universal themes without the branding of K-pop or any specific genre. That, he wrote, let her position herself as an increasingly resonant global pop star from Korea.

  • In July 2020, the creative director Anthony Vaccarello named Rosé the global ambassador for Yves Saint Laurent. She was the house's first global ambassador in 59 years. She fronted its Fall/Winter 2020 campaign, and she has appeared in its Fall campaigns from 2022 to 2025. In September 2021 she attended the Met Gala as Vaccarello's guest. She and the rapper CL were among the first female K-pop idols at the event.

In January 2021 she became the muse of Yves Saint Laurent Beauté, and in January 2025 its global ambassador. She made her Cannes Film Festival debut in the brand's clothes in May 2023. In 2024 she served as a guest juror at the ANDAM Fashion Awards. That year the brand also pressed a 500-copy limited vinyl of her reading two love letters from the Saint Laurent Editions book Love Letters. In 2025 she returned to the Met Gala in a custom Saint Laurent tuxedo.

In April 2021, Tiffany & Co. named her its global ambassador. She starred in its 2021 and 2022 HardWear campaigns, the later one photographed by Mario Sorrenti. For the 2023 launch of the Tiffany Lock collection, a capsule called the Tiffany Lock Rosé edition honoured her name. It used 18-karat rose gold and rare pink sapphires.

Rimowa announced her as a global ambassador in September 2023, and she has starred in its "Never Still" campaigns. Puma followed in June 2024, supporting its "Redesign the Classics" program. In November 2024 she and Dua Lipa headlined the Puma Speedcat campaign, and in August 2025 she released a Rosie-themed capsule of 10 pieces. In February 2026, Levi's announced her as a global ambassador, and she appeared in its "Behind Every Original" ad at the Super Bowl. Other deals ranged from the skincare brand Sulwhasoo to a bedtime story for the meditation app Calm, titled "Grounded With Rosé".

The business results are measured in estimated media value. A video of her in a black Saint Laurent dress produced $6.6 million, the highest figure for any endorser. Her presence helped the brand's Spring/Summer 2021 collection video reach 100 million views. Tiffany credited her with 13% of its total estimated media value in 2022. As of January 2024, her endorsements with Yves Saint Laurent, Tiffany, Rimowa and Sulwhasoo had generated $550 million. That made her the second-most impactful celebrity that year, behind Kim Kardashian, and the first Asian to reach the milestone.

  • During the 2019-20 Australian bushfire season, Rosé used Instagram to urge fans to give. She linked to organisations accepting donations and wrote, "We can make a difference if we all join in. Please help to save my home country".

In 2023 she spoke at a mental health awareness event in Cupertino, held during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit and hosted by the United States First Lady Jill Biden. She talked openly about her emotional struggles and the challenges of fame. She argued that mental health deserves as much priority as physical health. Biden called her "a global superstar who is using her platform as a force for good in the world". In 2024 she gave a portion of the proceeds from her Season's Greetings: From Hank and Rosé to You merchandise to unspecified animal shelters.

On the 22nd of November 2023, King Charles III invested her at Buckingham Palace with the Order of the British Empire. The ceremony included the other members of Blackpink, and South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol attended. The honour recognised services to the United Kingdom COP 26 Presidency and advocacy for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. Her bandmates' awards are honorary. Hers is a full appointment because she holds dual citizenship in New Zealand, a Commonwealth realm.

In December 2023, Rolling Stone Australia / New Zealand put her among 50 living icons from Australia and Aotearoa. It described her as an artist who represents K-pop's successful crossover into Western mainstream music. In April 2025 she appeared on the Time 100. That year she also received a Presidential Commendation at the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards, from South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Her audience is large. As of July 2025, she had more than 84.3 million Instagram followers, third among K-pop idols behind her bandmates Lisa and Jennie. In 2025, Forbes Korea ranked her first among celebrity YouTubers. Her channel has 18.1 million subscribers and 3.6 billion views, and it earned ₩11 billion, or US$8.2 million, in annual income.
