Alex was originally conceived as the main protagonist of the Street Fighter series, a role that would have fundamentally altered the franchise's history. Created early in development by designer Yasuda, known professionally as Akiman, the character was intended to be a simple hero to allow supporting cast members to be more flashy, similar to the approach taken in the manga Saint Seiya. His initial design established him as a former professional wrestler turned police officer, a concept chosen to capitalize on the immense popularity of professional wrestling at the time. This background was meant to distinguish him from the established series protagonist Ryu, creating a character that stood apart visually and narratively. The development team wanted a figure who could serve as a grounded anchor while the rest of the roster provided the spectacle, a decision that would eventually lead to Alex becoming one of the most unique figures in fighting game history.
Designing The Protector
The visual identity of Alex was crafted with specific real-world inspirations that set him apart from his peers. Yasuda developed Alex's facial features based on the appearance of French actor Christopher Lambert, a choice made because artist Kinu Nishimura was particularly fond of Lambert's look. The distinctive paint on his face, running from the bottom of his eyes down to the rest of his face, was directly inspired by the anime version of Devilman. In Street Fighter III, he wore green overalls, green open-fingered gloves, brown combat boots, and a red bandana, with long blonde hair wrapped in a ponytail and scars on each shoulder. He often wore a black tank top which he ripped off before fighting, or a bomber jacket when not in combat. By the time Street Fighter V arrived, he retained his core look but sported red suspenders, slightly shorter hair without a ponytail, and a red and white long-sleeved buttoned flannel worn either unbuttoned with sleeves rolled up or wrapped around his waist. His green cargo pants were slightly torn, reflecting his rugged lifestyle. The name Alex itself carries weight, meaning protector, while some analysts draw parallels to Alexander the Great as a possible source of inspiration for the moniker. The Tournament Of Revenge
Alex made his first playable appearance in Street Fighter III: New Generation, entering a narrative driven by personal loss and vengeance. His mentor and legal guardian, Tom, had engaged in a fight with Gill, the president of the Illuminati, and lost the encounter. As a result of the fight, Tom was sent into a hospital, an event that enraged Alex and prompted him to enter the third World Warrior tournament hosted by Gill with the specific intent to kill him. Alex defeated Gill and won the tournament, yet he chose not to kill his opponent. Gill, impressed by Alex's skills after their encounter, believed there was something special about the young fighter. Alex eventually returned to Tom as a changed person after fighting various people around the world, carrying the weight of his actions. This origin story established him as a character driven by loyalty and a desire to protect those he cared about, setting the stage for his future evolution within the series.
