  • XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy, was shot dead on the 18th of June 2018 near a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida. He was 20 years old. At the time, he was a rising and deeply polarizing figure in hip-hop. Fans heard honesty about depression and alienation in his music. Prosecutors, meanwhile, had charged him with violent crimes that he was still fighting in court. This documentary asks how a teenager releasing songs online built such a devoted audience so quickly. It asks what the accusations against him actually involved. And it asks why people still disagree about what his short life meant.

  • Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy was born on the 23rd of January 1998 in Plantation, Florida, to Jamaican parents. His father, Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy, named him after the Bob Marley song “So Jah Seh”. His mother was Cleopatra Eretha Dreena Bernard. Both his father and his grandfather were Rastafarians. Jahseh was born with a ventricular septal defect, commonly called a hole in the heart. He never grew taller than 5 feet 6 inches.

His grandmother, Collette Jones, did most of the raising, in Pompano Beach and Lauderhill, because of his mother's personal problems. One story holds that at age six he tried to stab a man who was attacking his mother. A source close to the family denied it happened. Police reports cannot settle the question, since he was a minor. Even so, trauma and domestic violence experts have said it is unlikely the story was made up.

In early 2008, when Onfroy was ten, his father was jailed in Arizona for nine years on RICO charges. The arrest followed a sting operation organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration. His father was deported to Jamaica in late 2016. Asked about him in a 2017 interview, Onfroy answered sarcastically, “What's a father?” His mother later claimed that his father routinely beat him as a child.

Other wounds came early. As a child, Onfroy found the body of his uncle, who had died by suicide. He referred to that trauma in several songs. In 2017 he hinted that an unnamed adult had sexually abused him when he was a boy. He also said he had witnessed a person being tortured and a person being raped.

Music first reached him through his aunt, who persuaded him to join the school choir and later a church choir. He was thrown out of the school choir for attacking a student who touched him. Margate Middle School later expelled him after a series of fights. His mother then enrolled him at Sheridan House Family Ministries, where he stayed for more than six months.

At Sheridan House he listened to rap, nu metal and hard rock. That led him to learn piano and guitar. He later dropped out of Piper High School in the tenth grade. He called himself a “misfit” from those years, quiet yet popular and often in physical confrontations. He had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder as a child, and he said he felt insecure and depressed in high school. Music, which had first found him through a choir, would soon become the outlet for all of it.

  • In June 2013, the release of a song called “News/Flock” marked the start of Onfroy's career as a recording artist. Accounts differ on how he met Stokeley Goulbourne, the rapper later known as Ski Mask the Slump God. Onfroy said they met in juvenile detention, where he was held on gun possession charges. Sources interviewed for a 2020 biography say they met at high school. Either way, the two became close friends and began freestyling together.

After his release in 2013, Onfroy and Goulbourne reunited believing they were about to commit a string of home invasions for money. Instead, Onfroy bought a Blue Snowball microphone and started recording. That convinced Goulbourne to do the same. Onfroy later said music was a better outlet for his feelings. He credited his then-girlfriend, Geneva Ayala, with helping him see it.

His stage name borrowed from Spanish, since “tentación” means temptation. His first song that he did not delete was “Vice City”, which went up on SoundCloud. It appeared on his debut mixtape, XXX (Unmastered), released on the 5th of March 2014. On the 30th of April 2014 he released his first two official EPs, E.motion and XXX. In June 2014 he produced “Elegant” for Edward Skeletrix, who then worked under the name Cight.

The Weeknd's trilogy of mixtapes inspired Onfroy to plan three EPs of his own: The Nobody's, The Fall and The Underworld. The Underworld was abandoned entirely. An unfinished version of The Nobody's came out on the 11th of July 2014 and was pulled quickly. Onfroy meant to finish and re-release it, but never did. The Fall arrived on the 21st of November 2014.

He joined Ski Mask the Slump God's group Very Rare, then broke away to start the Members Only collective in 2015, which Ski Mask also joined. That year they released Members Only Vol. 1 together, and Vol. 2 followed with several collective members. On the 31st of December 2015, the original version of “Look at Me” was uploaded to the SoundCloud account of its co-producer, Rojas. On the 28th of April 2016, Onfroy put out the EP Willy Wonka Was a Child Murderer, heavily inspired by heavy metal and indie music. Around then he quit a call center job and moved in with the rapper Denzel Curry.

The sound itself broke with rap habits. He used distortion and heavy guitar-backed instrumentals, drawing on third-wave emo and grunge. The scene around him, SoundCloud rap, mixed lo-fi textures with harsh 808 drums. His influences ranged from Kurt Cobain, Slipknot and Eminem to Kanye West, the Weeknd and the video game composer Yoko Shimomura. Of that range he said, “I'm really into multi-genre things that aren't just based around rapping itself. I'm more inspired by artists in other genres besides rap.”

The roughness was deliberate. He said the intentionally bad mixing on his tracks made them “genuine”. His voice changed with the song, showing what listeners called emotional vulnerability on sad tracks and something close to screaming on aggressive ones. Lyrics on many projects dwelled on violence, sex and drugs. On The Fall and 17, however, they turned to loneliness, depression, isolation and anxiety. In July 2016 his rise would collide with the justice system.

  • By 2017, “Look at Me” had climbed to number 34 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and into the top 40 of the Canadian Hot 100. Onfroy's half-colored hair, inspired by the villain Cruella de Vil from The Hundred and One Dalmatians, drew its own attention. Strangely, his breakthrough happened while he sat in jail. There he signed a deal to be managed by Soloman Sobande, who stayed with him until his death. Major-label scouts began offering six-figure contracts. Onfroy instead chose Empire Distribution, accepting a lower royalty rate and a smaller upfront payment in return for full creative control.

He was released from prison on the 18th of April 2017. Three days later he told XXL, “I got this really, really, really good album called 17. That's more of an alternative, R&B sound”. He also described a mixtape called I Need Jesus, which he said was mainly rap in his underground style. On the 28th of April he announced his first nationwide tour. The Revenge Tour ran for 26 dates and generated heavy media coverage.

The Revenge mixtape, his debut commercial solo release, came out on the 16th of May 2017 and gathered eight previously released songs. On the 13th of June, he appeared on the cover of XXL's annual Freshman list, alongside Playboi Carti, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Ugly God and PnB Rock. Members Only, Vol. 3 followed on the 26th of June. On the 9th of August, the singer DRAM brought him out at the Staples Center in Los Angeles during Kendrick Lamar's Damn Tour. It was his first appearance opening for a major act.

His debut album, 17, arrived on the 25th of August 2017. It debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 with 86,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. Critics were mixed, though some praised its personal narratives and varied style. Seven of its songs entered the Hot 100. The best was “Jocelyn Flores” at number 31, his highest placement since “Look at Me”. A guest spot on Kodak Black's “Roll in Peace” gave him his ninth Hot 100 entry, and it also peaked at 31.

On the 19th of October 2017, his label Bad Vibes Forever signed a distribution deal with Caroline, reportedly worth $6 million for one album. Six days later he announced that he was ending the contract, although a representative said he was still signed. Two days after that he declared he was retiring because of negativity and backlash. Some publications noted that he had made similar statements before without following through. On the 2nd of November he previewed new music. On the 11th of December he released his tenth EP, A Ghetto Christmas Carol, on SoundCloud.

The year 2018 opened with a promise of three albums: Skins, Bad Vibes Forever and a record titled ?. On the 22nd of June 2015, he had started using his YouTube channel, xxxtentacion, which grew to 36.7 million subscribers and an estimated 9 billion views by April 2022. In March 2018 it carried a video called #THEHELPINGHANDCHALLENGE, in which he donated instruments, video game consoles and other gifts to a foster home. He said he would release his album only after the hashtag reached one million mentions on Instagram. On the 21st of February, he released “Hope”, dedicated to the victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland.

On the 2nd of March 2018 he released two songs from his second album. They were “Sad!”, which debuted at number 17 and became his highest-charting song at that point, and “Changes”, featuring PnB Rock. The 18-track album ? was released on the 16th of March, with guests including Joey Bada$, Travis Barker and PnB Rock. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Soon afterward, he signed a new deal with Empire Distribution for his third solo album, worth ten million dollars.

  • Spin called him “rap's most controversial man”, and XXL named him its most “controversial freshman ever”. Much of that reputation came from public fights with other artists. On the 28th of January 2017, Drake previewed a track called “KMT”. Social media users compared its triple-heavy flow to Onfroy's “Look at Me”. Onfroy told XXL that if Drake had taken the flow, he should at least have reached out. After leaving jail, he insulted Drake in a radio interview. He also posted mocking images of Drake's mother. Drake later told DJ Semtex that he had not stolen the flow and did not know Onfroy.

The feud widened. Offset of Migos attacked Onfroy over Instagram's livestream feature. A Chicago rapper named 600Breezy claimed Drake had given him permission to join in, and he threatened Onfroy. 600Breezy later traveled to Florida looking for him, without success. On the 14th of November, Onfroy accused Migos of pointing a firearm at him over the Drake dispute.

The most painful quarrel involved his closest friend. On the 30th of October 2017, Onfroy said he would make music again if Ski Mask the Slump God became his friend again. He accused Ski Mask of putting business before friendship. Ski Mask answered that he had to distance himself so people would see him as an individual rapper. He also claimed Onfroy had threatened his family. On the 8th of December 2017, Onfroy wrote on Instagram that he still loved him. The two reunited at Rolling Loud in Miami in 2018.

An earlier flashpoint was the video for “Riot”. In one scene, Onfroy placed a noose around the neck of a white child, in a depiction of lynching. The child's mother was anxious at first but accepted the message. Onfroy pointed to the real killings shown at the video's start, saying, “Heather Heyer, Emmett Till, Philando Castile, these are real murders.” He called the scene an “art portrayal” that put the shoe on the other foot.

His live shows were just as volatile. On the 7th of April 2017, a surprise Miami concert with a $5 entry price erupted into a riot before he arrived, and police closed it down. On the 31st of May, his Members Only colleague Wifisfuneral was kicked by audience members after stage-diving at the first Revenge Tour show in Houston. In June 2017 in San Diego, Onfroy was knocked unconscious and an audience member was stabbed, though not fatally. The attacker was reported to be linked to the rapper Rob Stone, whose feud with Onfroy and Ski Mask ended in October 2017.

On the 16th of June, Onfroy punched an audience member in Salt Lake City, saying he had warned that anyone who touched him would be hit. Four days later, a Chicago show at the Concord Music Hall was canceled at the last minute, and hundreds of fans nearly started a riot in the streets. On the 2nd of September, a free concert at the Orpheum in Tampa had space for 750 people, but over 3,000 turned up. Police broke up the crowd, and some fans claimed they were teargassed. A brawl at Rolling Loud in California on the 21st of October ended that run.

On the 10th of May 2018, Spotify announced it would stop promoting or recommending music by Onfroy, Tay-K and R. Kelly. Onfroy and his team replied that artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Dr. Dre, David Bowie and Michael Jackson faced no such treatment despite worse allegations. The policy was reversed after Top Dawg Entertainment's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, threatened to pull his label's music from the service. Onfroy publicly thanked Kendrick Lamar and Top Dawg.

  • In late 2012, Onfroy was arrested for possessing 21 grams of marijuana, a felony under Florida law. He was sentenced to one month in juvenile detention and six months at a behavioral correction facility. Soon after his release, he was arrested again for breaking into a house to steal a laptop so he could make music. In 2014, he was sent to a youth detention center for a year on gun possession charges. He said prosecutors wanted to try him as an adult, which carried 5-10 years. Sources for the 2020 biography dispute his account, and public files cannot confirm it because he was a juvenile.

In August 2015, Onfroy tried to end his life by running into oncoming traffic. He was taken to a hospital and later fined $86.50 for the incident. The following year brought the first of the most serious cases. Dylan Turner, known as Tablez, was a New Jersey native studying at Full Sail University. He managed Onfroy and Ski Mask the Slump God in 2016, to be paid only from the proceeds of “Look at Me!”. According to Tablez, days after a falling-out, an angry Onfroy and others broke into his apartment. Tablez said Onfroy poked a knife toward his stomach, and then the blade sank in. He needed emergency surgery and suffered life-changing injuries.

Tablez pledged to drop the charges if his computer was returned, saying he “didn't want one bad choice to define who Onfroy was.” He kept his word even though every file on it had been deleted. Onfroy paid all of the hospital bills and later thanked him. Asked whether Onfroy had genuinely changed, Tablez answered, “Yes. Deep down we all are.”

On the 14th of July 2016, days after bailing out over the Tablez case, Onfroy was arrested again. The charges were robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and home invasion, for an incident in November 2015. According to the arrest report, he entered the home of Che Thomas with three others, armed with a firearm. He pistol-whipped Thomas three times and left with an iPad, an iPhone, a Sony PlayStation Portable and $20. Prosecutors moved him between jurisdictions until one would charge him as an adult for a juvenile crime. He was released on a $10,000 bond in September 2016. After Thomas asked that he not go to prison, Onfroy pleaded no contest and received six years of probation.

In October 2016, while awaiting trial, he was arrested on charges of aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery and false imprisonment. The accuser was his ex-girlfriend, Geneva Ayala. She had moved in with Onfroy and his roommates in 2016. In her statement, she described beatings, choking and threats with knives. Onfroy was involuntarily hospitalized under Florida's Baker Act in 2016, after Ayala and his roommates told police he had attempted suicide. He maintained his innocence in public until his death. Roommates of both said he showed deep remorse and badly wanted to control his anger.

On the 26th of March 2017, he was released from jail on a $50,000 bail. The trial slipped from May to October, then December 2017. On the 8th of September 2017, Pitchfork leaked the testimony of the alleged victim. Onfroy donated $100,000 to domestic violence prevention programs, which drew fresh controversy. An event he announced to support rape victims was canceled after vandalism. Then Ayala filed an affidavit asking that the charges be “completely dropped”, and she declined to testify. Prosecutors responded by splitting the case in two and adding witness tampering charges.

On the 14th of December 2017, Onfroy pleaded not guilty and was taken into custody for violating his bond. He was released to house arrest on the 20th of December and freed from it on the 21st of March 2018. His lead attorney, J. David Bogenschutz, said that Judge Richard Hersch had been looking more kindly on him, even allowing him to tour. Bogenschutz believed Onfroy would have received probation rather than prison. After the killing, prosecutors dropped the domestic violence charges. Ayala said after his death that she had opposed any prison sentence for him.

Two more disputes surfaced. Shortly after Onfroy left house arrest, a Snapchat video appeared showing him striking a girl, Breonna Starling, in 2013 when he was 15. His lawyers called it a joke, and Starling's family then allegedly demanded $300,000 for her silence. Starling later admitted that Onfroy's account was correct, and he dropped his lawsuit against her. On the 23rd of October 2018, Pitchfork released a secret recording from around his October 2016 arrest. It alleged he confessed to domestic violence and described stabbing eight people. Critics, including the biographer Jonathan Reiss, said the outlet left out his expressions of remorse. A video later showed that he and the producer Khaed had been about to be jumped by roughly twenty-five to forty people.

  • On the 31st of December 2017, Onfroy began a relationship with Jenesis Sanchez, which grew into a domestic partnership. She said he showed progress in managing his anger, and would walk away from arguments instead of turning physical. He said he saw his late friend Jocelyn Flores as a guardian angel who helped him make better choices. In November 2017 he bought a 6000-square-foot mansion in Parkland. The couple owned three cats and two dogs. In the mid-2010s he had shared a Florida home with the rapper Denzel Curry and the producer Ronny J.

Three days after his death, his mother announced that Sanchez was pregnant. Sanchez said Onfroy learned the news three weeks before he died. Their son, Gekyume, was born on the 26th of January 2019, three days after what would have been his father's 21st birthday. Onfroy's mother filed to block a DNA test of his sample. On the 15th of May 2019, a Florida judge granted Sanchez access to it.

His friendships included Lil Uzi Vert, PnB Rock, Lil Yachty, Juice Wrld and Billie Eilish. Eilish said in an interview that he talked her out of a plan to attempt suicide. Trippie Redd briefly ended his association with Onfroy after the allegations surfaced. At a concert, Onfroy told the crowd he understood why, saying he had not been a good person and was trying to change. Trippie Redd accepted the apology on Instagram. In March 2018 Onfroy announced he was earning his GED and heading to community college. His death certificate indicates he finished the GED. By the time he died, he was seeing a therapist and taking medication, after being re-diagnosed with bipolar disorder as an adult.

Raised a Christian, Onfroy had a well-documented interest in the occult. Tarpley Hitt of the Miami New Times, who interviewed him, recalled that he spent most of two hours on that subject. Housemates said he owned books on the occult and took part in rituals. He drew inspiration from the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy. On his song “Daemons”, he voiced a revenge fantasy against God for allowing suffering, including his uncle's. He believed in reincarnation, and thought the cycle of rebirth ends when a person lives without harming others. He felt he had failed at that because of his violence. A fascination with Indigo children may explain his attraction to the color blue late in his life.

His politics were just as plainly stated. In 2016 he opposed Donald Trump and signaled support for Bernie Sanders. He called Hillary Clinton “garbage” but feared that a Trump win would leave minorities and lower classes worse off. His songs “Hate Will Never Win” and “Suicide Pit” contain anti-Trump lyrics. He said, “If weed was legal everywhere, the world would be a better place”, and he backed criminal justice reform.

  • On the day of the killing, the attackers fled in an SUV after taking a Louis Vuitton bag containing $50,000 in cash. Four suspects were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, among other counts. In August 2022, one of them pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for testifying against the other three. Their trial began on the 7th of February 2023. On the 20th of March 2023, all three were found guilty on every count. On the 6th of April 2023, they were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

“Sad!” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 after his death, and its video came out on the 28th of June 2018. The video showed Onfroy stressing that he had changed since the controversies of his career. By February 2024, the song had passed 1.2 billion views on YouTube and 2.1 billion streams on Spotify. The RIAA certified it diamond in August 2021. “Moonlight” and “Hope” also charted after his death, peaking at 13 and 70.

The first posthumous song was “Ghost Busters”, released on the 21st of June 2018 by Trippie Redd with Quavo and Ski Mask the Slump God. A few months later, Onfroy won Best New Hip Hop Artist at the BET Hip Hop Awards. He also won Favorite Album, Soul/R&B at the American Music Awards for 17. His estate released Skins on the 7th of December 2018, and it became his second number-one album. Bad Vibes Forever followed on the 6th of December 2019 as his fourth and final studio album, entering the top five. Its lead single, “Royalty”, featured Ky-Mani Marley, a son of Bob Marley.

Other artists kept adding him to their work. Lil Wayne featured him on “Don't Cry” from Tha Carter V. Skrillex's “Arms Around You” came out on the 25th of October 2018, after Lil Pump asked Onfroy's mother for permission to use his vocals as a tribute. On the 10th of May 2021, he became the first artist to release music posthumously as NFTs, with five scrapped SoundCloud songs. In January 2022 his estate began putting his old SoundCloud tracks on streaming services, starting with “Vice City”.

On the 26th of May 2022, the documentary Look at Me arrived on Hulu. Look at Me: The Album followed on the 10th of June with 25 songs. The film In His Own Words, built from unseen 2017 interviews by Fader Films, was released on the 22nd of November 2022.

By the numbers, he has RIAA-certified sales of 61 million units in the US and BPI-certified sales of over 7 million in the UK, a total of 68 million. He has received 11 Billboard Music Award nominations since his death. He is regarded as a leading figure in establishing emo rap and SoundCloud rap. Juice Wrld dedicated the song “Legends” to him. Trippie Redd credits him as a pioneer of rage music.

His legacy remains split. Some say his legal troubles and alleged violence define him. Others criticize the media's portrayal of him and see a story about second chances and redemption. On the 30th of July 2025, Ski Mask the Slump God released The Lost Files, a compilation of old SoundCloud tracks. It includes three early collaborations with his former friend: “Fatality”, “Broly” and “IWatchedHimDrown”.
