The Fate of Ophelia
The Fate of Ophelia, a single by Taylor Swift, became the first song to collect 30 million streams on Spotify in a single day. It borrows its title from a doomed woman in Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, then gives her a rescue where the play gives her a grave. Where did that idea come from, and who helped turn it into a glossy dance-pop track? Why did critics admire its literary reach while arguing over whether it understood the character it borrowed? And how did its music video send fans to a museum in Germany to stand in front of an old painting?
On the 13th of August 2025, Swift appeared on New Heights, the podcast hosted by Travis and Jason Kelce, and announced the album that would carry the song. She revealed The Fate of Ophelia as the opening track. During the episode she talked about Hamlet, and especially about Ophelia, who descends into madness and drowns. That story shaped the album's cover artwork. The album itself reflected Swift's triumphant mood amid the success of the Eras Tour and her relationship with the football player Travis Kelce throughout 2024.
The spark for the song came in a recording studio, where Swift was working with Max Martin and Shellback. She was scrolling through a list of song ideas on her smartphone while Shellback played what she described as a "really cool chord progression." Her eye landed on the word Ophelia. She imagined a version of the story in which Ophelia never goes insane and dies, and instead meets someone who treats her well. From that picture came the hook, "You saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia."
Serena Trowbridge, a scholar of Victorian literature, has pointed to another possible source. She suggests the song may also have been inspired by Elizabeth Siddal, a Pre-Raphaelite model and poet. Siddal was the muse for John Everett Millais's painting Ophelia from the early 1850s. That painting in turn influenced the album's cover artwork.
The song reached listeners on the 3rd of October 2025, the same day as the album, through Republic Records. On that day Universal Music Group also sent it to radio in Italy. In the United States, Republic took it to hot adult contemporary radio on the 6th of October and to contemporary hit radio on the 7th.
Shellback Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, is where the song was recorded, and MXM Studios in the same city is where it was produced. Swift wrote and produced the track with Max Martin and Shellback. It runs 3 minutes and 46 seconds and blends dance-pop, synth-pop and funk over a new wave groove. The arrangement opens with a drum roll and minor-key piano chords. It then builds into cascading synthesizers, steel guitars, Omnichords and a driving bassline. Swift sings mostly in her lower register during the verses, with reverb around her voice.
The credits show how the parts were divided. Martin played piano and keyboards and handled programming. Shellback contributed bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, percussion and the Omnichord. Anders Pettersson played pedal steel guitar. Serban Ghenea mixed the track at MixStar Studios in Virginia Beach, and Randy Merrill mastered it at Sterling Sound in Edgewater, New Jersey.
Reviewers reached for comparisons almost at once. Several likened the song to Fleetwood Mac, and Chris Molanphy of Slate heard the opening drum roll as an echo of their 1977 song "Dreams." Lauren Hague of Clash called it a 2020s take on 2000s funk-pop, in the spirit of Duffy's "Mercy" and Adele's "Rumour Has It." Mikael Wood of the Los Angeles Times heard the British new wave duo Eurythmics. Ann Powers of NPR placed parts of the production near Stevie Nicks's "Stand Back," Gorillaz's "Clint Eastwood" and Swift's own "Wildest Dreams." Two critics looked back at Swift's catalogue: Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen of The Sydney Morning Herald found a darker tone that recalled Reputation, while Jon Pareles of The New York Times linked the piano to Folklore.
The song did not stay in one form for long. An acoustic version called "Alone in My Tower" appeared, along with remixes by Loud Luxury, the Chainsmokers, and Telykast and XanTz, each paired with an extended mix. Limited-time CD singles and downloads, including original, acoustic and instrumental versions, were issued through October. A 7-inch vinyl single followed in December, and the Telykast and XanTz remix arrived in the middle of January 2026.
"The eldest daughter of a nobleman" is how the second verse introduces Ophelia, and from there the lyrics turn grim. The verse says that love was "a cold bed full of scorpions" whose venom stole her sanity. Around that sits the narrator's own story. She pledges loyalty to a man who rescued her from a list of fates: insanity, drowning, deception, purgatory and, finally, a death like Ophelia's.
The refrain places the narrator "alone in the tower" while she waits for a suitor. He arrives and, in the song's image, digs her out of her grave. That rescue is the reversal at the center of the song.
The bridge reaches directly into Hamlet. In Act 1, scene iii, Ophelia tells her brother Laertes, "Tis in my memory locked, and you yourself shall keep the key of it." Swift reshapes the line into a promise to her rescuer, saying it is locked inside her memory and that only he holds the key.
The song is also personal. Publications found real-life references to Kelce, including his football career, his public declaration of affection for Swift and his habit of saying "keep it one hundred." Some listeners compared the plot to "Love Story" from 2008, which Swift built on Romeo and Juliet. Both songs give happy endings to tragedies that Shakespeare ended badly. Swift herself acknowledged that this was her second attempt, after "Love Story," at rewriting a Shakespearean ending.
Rolling Stone placed the song eighth on its list of the 100 best songs of 2025, and Billboard put it at number 14 on its year-end list. Most reviewers who singled out a highlight from the album chose this track. Jason Lipshutz of Billboard ranked it second on the album, behind "Ruin the Friendship." Powers, Ludovic Hunter-Tilney of the Financial Times and Lipshutz all admired the way the song moves from piano into bassline.
Maya Georgi of Rolling Stone called the melody "tantalizing" and the instrument mix "wondrous." Matthew Dwyer of PopMatters pointed to "glamorous tension" in the composition. Georgi and Hague both heard a new musical direction for Swift. Her vocals drew praise too: Hunter-Tilney noted "characteristic commitment and charisma," and Powers wrote that her voice "has never sounded stronger," sounding "massive and intimate at the same time."
Not every note was warm. Spencer Kornhaber of The Atlantic called the song "relatively strong, if unexpectedly downcast." Molanphy judged it Swift's "most banger-adjacent" single of the 2020s, yet said its "broodiness" had more in common with Folklore than with her frothy 2010s pop.
The lyrics split the reviewers more sharply. Roisin O'Connor of The Independent called the song sublime for its "literary flair," and Hague saw confessional songwriting with a tongue-in-cheek refrain. Tom Breihan of Stereogum argued that both this song and "Love Story" miss the point of their tragedies, but he enjoyed the excess anyway. Carlos Marcos of El Pais liked the original production and found the lyrics weighed it down. Will Hodgkinson of The Times wrote that the comparison between Swift and Ophelia "doesn't really work."
The sharpest argument was about what the story says about women. Hunter-Tilney found it misplaced to merge doomed Ophelia with a Rapunzel-style figure waiting in a tower. Lindsay Zoladz of The New York Times found it dispiriting that Ophelia became "just another princess waiting for her Prince Charming." Trowbridge took a middle path. She said the waiting woman was not progressive, but that it helped the album explore "the public face of women" and their painful experiences. In Psychology Today, the psychotherapist Whitney Coulson read the song as showing "how easily a woman's pain is rewritten as instability."
Seven weeks at the top of the Billboard Global 200 is only part of what the song did on the world stage. It reached number one in more than 26 territories, among them Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, the Philippines, Iceland and the United Arab Emirates. On Spotify it also set the record for the highest single-week streams.
Country by country, the staying power varied widely. It spent 15 weeks at number one in Canada, 14 in Switzerland, 13 in Germany and 12 in Austria. It held the top spot for 10 weeks in Norway and the Netherlands, nine in Ireland and eight in Belgium's Flanders region. For Swift it was a first number-one single in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands.
In France, the song debuted at number four, which made it her highest-charting solo single there and put it ahead of "Shake It Off." It later reached diamond certification in France. In the United Kingdom it opened at number one with 132,000 first-week units, the largest first-week sales of the year and of Swift's career. It then spent seven non-consecutive weeks on top, her longest run at number one in that country.
In the United States, the song became Swift's 13th number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting there with 92.5 million on-demand streams. It stayed on top for 10 non-consecutive weeks, her longest-running number-one song. Once downloads went on sale, it became her 30th number one on Digital Song Sales, extending her own record.
Radio added a record of its own. On Pop Airplay, the song became the first in history to debut in the top-10 region. It went on to become Swift's 14th number one on that chart, holding the position for five weeks. On Adult Pop Airplay it held the top spot for four weeks, and later certifications reached triple platinum in Canada and Portugal.
The Los Angeles Theatre is where the music video begins, in a foyer where the camera pans to a painting on the wall. Swift wrote and directed the video, working with the cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, the choreographer Mandy Moore and the production designer Ethan Tobman. Moore and Tobman had both collaborated on the Eras Tour, and the dancers came from that tour too. Rehearsals took place over more than three weeks. The theatre also hosted the filming of the opening scene and the dressing room scenes.
The painting leads into a gallery of showgirls from different eras. Swift first appears as a model sitting for a Pre-Raphaelite portrait of Ophelia, in the manner of an Art Nouveau painting called Ophelia by Friedrich Heyser. She becomes a blonde burlesque performer styled on Marilyn Monroe, a 1960s go-go dancer like Ronnie Spector, and a stage actress in the vein of Sarah Bernhardt. Another look recalls Esther Williams in a musical number in the style of Busby Berkeley.
Later scenes move closer to the present. Swift wears a dress made of rope and resembles Elizabeth Taylor, then performs a routine in the style of Bob Mackie, and finally appears as a pop star at a hotel afterparty. The video ends with her half-submerged in a bathtub, the image that appears on the album cover. Hidden references to other tracks on the album, to Eras Tour moments and to Kelce are scattered through it, and Vancouver's Science World makes a brief appearance near the end.
The video was shown twice within The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, the promotional film that also carried behind-the-scenes footage. It reached YouTube two days after the film. It trended at number one there, with 25 million views in three days. Vogue called it a "true visual feast," and Elle and The Times of India praised its nods to classical art and pop culture. Rolling Stone noted its theatrical imagery and costume changes, and Deadline Hollywood commended Swift's direction and visual storytelling.
Museum Wiesbaden, in Wiesbaden, Germany, holds Heyser's Ophelia, and after the video appeared, Swift's fans, known as Swifties, began to visit it. Timon Gremmels, the minister of science and research, arts and culture for the German state of Hesse, said he was delighted. He remarked, "When a music video gets people to visit a museum, it shows that culture works," and he formally invited Swift to visit Wiesbaden. On the 2nd of November 2025 the museum held a guided tour of the painting, and tickets sold out in a few hours. Visitors dressed in outfits inspired by Swift or Ophelia were admitted free.
The interest went well beyond Wiesbaden. Parade reported a December 2025 study in which internet searches for "Ophelia" peaked 1,231 percent above normal, while searches for "Hamlet" rose 66 percent.
The choreography became a viral trend, with fans and creators copying Swift's moves. Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia, tried it on the Melbourne radio station Nova 100. The Indian parliamentarian and author Shashi Tharoor also took part.
Television picked the song up quickly. The episode of Saturday Night Live broadcast on the 18th of October 2025 included a parody sketch with Sabrina Carpenter, Chloe Fineman, Marcello Hernandez and Andrew Dismukes. On the 8th of November, series 23 of the British contest Strictly Come Dancing featured a tango to the song by Vicky Pattison and Kai Widdrington. NATO and the British royal family used it in social media posts. Sunil Thomas of The Week called the phenomenon "unprecedented" and credited its high-art references and its viral dance.
On the 4th of November 2025, the official White House TikTok account posted a patriotic video set to the song, with images of the US flag and military. A White House official told Variety that the video was made because the administration expected media outlets to amplify it. Social media users and Swifties pushed back against the video.
Awards followed in 2026. The song or its video appears in categories at the Brit Awards, the American Music Awards, the iHeartRadio Music Awards, the AICP Awards and the American Society of Cinematographers Awards, among others.
In December 2025, an AI-generated Portuguese version called "A Sina de Ofelia" went viral, with voices resembling a duet by Luisa Sonza and Dilsinho. It entered the top 50 of Spotify's Brazilian chart before being removed from streaming platforms. Under the title "Todo Tempo Sozinha Nessa Torre," it peaked at number 85 on the Brasil Hot 100. The episode raised legal debates about music generated by artificial intelligence and who owns it.
