  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the National Football League in 1976 as an expansion team alongside the Seattle Seahawks. Their inaugural season ended with a winless record of zero wins and fourteen losses. They were outscored by an average of almost twenty-one points per game during that first year. Only three games finished within one possession for the struggling franchise. This performance made them the only Super Bowl-era team to go winless in a whole season until the Detroit Lions matched the feat in 2008. The losing streak caused them to become the butt of late-night television comedians' jokes. Tampa Bay did not win their first regular season game until the thirteenth week of their second season. That victory came on December eleventh, 1977 against the New Orleans Saints. They needed another week to secure their second win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The franchise suffered through fourteen consecutive losing seasons from 1983 to 1996. This streak remains the longest in NFL history. Despite these early struggles, the team became the first post-merger expansion team to clinch a division title and host a conference championship by their fourth season in 1979.

  • Hugh Culverhouse died in 1994 leaving his son Hugh Culverhouse Jr. to manage the business. A settlement gave control of the trust to the younger Culverhouse who sold the team for one hundred ninety-two million dollars. Real estate magnate Malcolm Glazer outbid both George Steinbrenner and Peter Angelos for that price. It was the highest sale price for a professional sports franchise up to that point. Glazer immediately placed his sons Bryan, Edward, and Joel in charge of financial affairs. He convinced Hillsborough County voters to raise sales taxes to fund Raymond James Stadium. Tony Dungy arrived as head coach in 1996 with Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator experience. The team hired Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator and Lovie Smith as linebackers coach. Their Cover Two scheme became known as the Tampa Two defense. Jon Gruden replaced Dungy after the 2001 season when the Buccaneers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Glazers paid four draft picks and eight million dollars to acquire Gruden from the Oakland Raiders on February twentieth, 2002. The 2002 season saw the Buccaneers win the NFC South title with a twelve-win record. They defeated the Philadelphia Eagles twenty-seven to ten in the divisional round. Ronde Barber sealed the victory with an interception return for a touchdown. In Super Bowl XXXVII they routed the Oakland Raiders forty-eight to twenty-one. This marked their first championship and made them the first post-merger expansion team to win a Super Bowl.

  • Jon Gruden's relationship with general manager Rich McKay deteriorated during the 2003 season. Keyshawn Johnson was deactivated by the team ten games into that year for sideline arguments. The Glazers allowed McKay to leave before the regular season ended and he joined the Atlanta Falcons. The Buccaneers finished 7, 9 and missed the playoffs while the Raiders also failed to make the postseason. Bruce Allen took over as general manager in 2004 but released John Lynch and Warren Sapp. The team started 1, 5 under head coach Jon Gruden and finished 5, 11. A midseason slump followed a strong start in 2005 when rookie Carnell Williams won Offensive Rookie of the Year. Chris Simms struggled early but led the team to a last-minute win over Washington. They won the NFC South at eleven wins but lost to Washington in the Wild Card round. The 2006 season suffered from injuries to starters like Dan Buenning, Michael Clayton, and Cadillac Williams. Tim Rattay replaced injured quarterbacks late in the season as they finished 4, 12. Raheem Morris became head coach after Gruden was fired following the 2008 season. The 2009 squad started 0, 7 behind Josh Johnson and Josh Freeman. They finished 3, 13 which was their worst record since 1991. Greg Schiano arrived in 2012 with a strict coaching style that drew criticism. The team dealt with MRSA infections among players including Lawrence Tynes and Carl Nicks. Schiano and Mark Dominik were fired on December thirtieth, 2013 after an 0, 8 start. Lovie Smith took over in January 2014 but the team finished 2, 14 again.

  • Bruce Arians was named head coach on January eighth, 2019 after Dirk Koetter's termination. He had spent the 2018 season in the broadcast booth before returning to coaching. Todd Bowles joined as defensive coordinator the next day. Jameis Winston set franchise records with five thousand one hundred nine passing yards and thirty-three touchdowns in 2019. He also threw a league-leading thirty interceptions. Tom Brady acquired the Buccaneers in the 2020 offseason after twenty seasons with New England. Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement to join him via trade for a seventh-round pick. Antonio Brown signed a one-year contract to reunite with Arians and Brady. The offense ranked third in the league while Mike Evans tied Jerry Rice's record for consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. They clinched their first playoff berth since 2007 after a forty-seven to seven victory against Detroit. The team defeated Washington thirty-one to twenty-three in the Wild Card round. They beat the Saints thirty to twenty and advanced to Super Bowl LV. The Buccaneers won their second title by defeating Kansas City thirty-one to nine. This made them the first team to play in and win a Super Bowl at their home stadium. Raymond James Stadium hosted the game because SoFi Stadium was not completed in time.

  • Lee Roy Selmon was drafted with the first pick ever in 1976 to start the defensive identity. Three Buccaneer players have been named AP Defensive Player of the Year. The team has led the league in total defense on three occasions including the 2002 championship season. All five Hall of Fame inductees are defensive players or coaches. The early years featured Lee Roy Selmon alongside linebackers Dewey Selmon and Richard Wood. Their 3, 4 defense peaked in 1979 when they led the league in points allowed. The Tampa Two scheme created by Monte Kiffin and Tony Dungy became one of the greatest defensive runs in history. From 1997 to 2008 the defense finished in the top ten every year but one. Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, Warren Sapp, and Ronde Barber were future Hall of Famers who anchored that unit. The 2002 defense allowed only nineteen-six points all season while intercepting thirty-one passes. They returned three interceptions for touchdowns in Super Bowl XXXVII against Rich Gannon's Raiders. Todd Bowles implemented a 3, 4 scheme starting in 2019 with heavy emphasis on blitzing. Shaquil Barrett led the league with nineteen point five sacks in his first season. The defense finished number one in run defense and seventh in pass defense during the 2020 title run.

  • The Buccaneers played home games at Tampa Stadium until moving to Raymond James Stadium in 1998. They built One Buccaneer Place near Tampa International Airport in 1975 as a small practice complex. Jon Gruden sarcastically called it The Woodshed due to cramped offices and aircraft noise. Players complained about infestations and decrepit conditions throughout the team's existence. A new thirty-million-dollar training facility opened across from Raymond James Stadium in August 2006. It included three natural grass fields and a rehabilitation center with three pools. The state-of-the-art building became known as AdventHealth Training Facility after a ten-year naming deal in 2018. Logos evolved from Bucco Bruce to the skull and swords design in 1997. The original orange red and white uniforms were nicknamed Creamsicle uniforms for their similarity to ice cream. Green was dropped from the color scheme shortly after inception because artists' renditions resembled Miami Dolphins aqua. The Buccaneers wore all-white jerseys from 1988 to 1991 to accommodate quarterback Vinny Testaverde's color blindness. The current skull logo features minor changes from its second edition but remains largely consistent.
