  • Players sit inside the cockpit of a starfighter on the 2nd of October 2020. The screen displays vital information about weaponry and shields directly in front of their eyes. Movement of power between functions determines survival during combat. A pilot can shift energy from engines to shields when an enemy missile approaches. Imperial ships lack physical shields entirely. This absence forces other design changes to balance the two opposing teams. Experience points unlock new weapons and cosmetic items for pilots. Daily challenges provide currency called Glory to purchase these unlocks. Instruments within the ship's cockpit show real-time status updates. Four distinct classes exist for both the New Republic and the Empire. Fighter class includes the TIE Fighter and X-wing. Interceptor class features the TIE Interceptor and A-Wing. Bomber class contains the TIE Bomber and Y-Wing. Support class offers the TIE Reaper and U-Wing. An update later added the B-Wing to bomber ranks.

  • Captain Lindon Javes stands at Fostar Haven four years after the Battle of Endor. He commands Helix Squadron under orders from Commodore Rae Sloane. His mission involves hunting refugees who escaped Alderaan. Disgusted by the command, Javes disables his wingmen to protect the convoy. Echo Squadron arrives to assist the fleeing civilians. Javes defects to the Alliance shortly after this battle. He offers knowledge of Imperial Fleet protocols to earn trust. Commander Javes now leads Vanguard Squadron aboard the cruiser Temperance. The squadron works on Project Starhawk to complete a massive battleship. Captain Terisa Kerrill leads Titan Squadron in response to this threat. She seeks vengeance against Javes for his betrayal. Her Star Destroyer, the Overseer, nearly gets destroyed in a trap set by Javes. Kerrill refuses repairs and rearms the ship to destroy the Starhawk prototype. An assault at Nadiri Dockyards damages the Starhawk significantly. Javes takes command of Anvil Squadron but is shot down during the defense. General Hera Syndulla assumes leadership of Vanguard Squadron afterward. They ram the damaged Starhawk into an unstable moon to destroy the Imperial fleet. Javes survives the explosion with help from surviving squad members.

  • James Clement and Patrick Lalonde pitched the initial concept to Motive Studio leadership. Steven Masters joined them to develop the presentation for what became Star Wars: Squadrons. A small group led by Ian Frazier laid groundwork while others finished Battlefront II work. The game was revealed publicly on the 15th of June 2020 through a trailer release. Cross-platform play enabled support across PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One systems. PC versions allow virtual reality headset usage via various hardware options. PlayStation 4 supports PlayStation VR specifically. All versions include HOTAS support starting day one. Development reached gold status by the 10th of September 2020. This milestone meant physical production could begin immediately. Next-gen enhancements arrived later for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Improved lighting appeared on the former system. High frame rates and 4K support targeted the latter platform. EA announced these updates alongside other titles like Apex Legends.

  • The PC version allows players to use virtual reality headsets during gameplay. Various models of VR equipment function with the software interface. PlayStation 4 supports PlayStation VR as a dedicated option. Console editions received HOTAS support in a patch released on launch day. Flight control systems connect directly to joystick peripherals. Players can manage power distribution using physical controls. The cockpit view adapts to immersive headset displays. Lighting effects improve significantly on newer generation consoles. Frame rate increases provide smoother motion tracking. These technical choices enable deeper immersion for participants. Developers ensured compatibility across multiple platforms simultaneously. Physical copies began manufacturing after gold status confirmation. Digital distribution remained available throughout the release window. Cross-platform functionality allowed mixed console participation.

  • A CGI short titled Hunted debuted on the Star Wars YouTube channel on the 14th of September 2020. Motive Studios collaborated with Lucasfilm, Skywalker Sound, and Industrial Light & Magic to produce it. Squadron Leader Varko Grey delays his retreat after a surprise attack by the New Republic. He attempts to defend a TIE Bomber pilot but fails to save him. His ship is destroyed while he escapes alone. Grey enters a dogfight with an X-wing before crashing onto a planet surface. Imperial forces retrieve him stating the war continues. Pre-order bonuses included cosmetic skins themed around New Republic Recruit or Imperial Ace sets. Each skin applies to ships and pilots within both factions. Decals appear on both sets of vehicles. Two additional skins called Var-Shaa set appeared following Hunted promotion. These feature appearances from the short film itself. The Var-Shaa set includes X-wing and TIE Interceptor variants. Promotional materials highlighted these exclusive items heavily during marketing campaigns.

  • Review aggregator platform Metacritic assigned generally favorable scores to the title. Some critics compared reception to Rogue Squadron games from late 1990s and early 2000s. PC Gamer awarded 83 out of 100 points for combat mechanics. They criticized lack of story choices and character development depth. Game Informer gave 8.25 out of 10 praising multiplayer aspects.
