  • Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke about potential spin-offs in February 2020. He mentioned that characters from The Mandalorian could get their own series. Rosario Dawson appeared as Ahsoka Tano in Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian later that year. Dave Filoni wrote and directed that episode. Lucasfilm announced the standalone series in December 2020. Filoni served as showrunner while Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Carrie Beck, and Colin Wilson acted as executive producers. The project started as a miniseries but evolved into an eight-episode season by April 2023. Principal photography began on the 9th of May 2022, at Manhattan Beach Studios under the working title Stormcrow. Filming wrapped six months later in October 2022. The first two episodes premiered on Disney+ on the 22nd of August 2023. Subsequent episodes released weekly until October 3.

  • Rosario Dawson reprised her role from The Mandalorian to play the title character. She embraced training required to replicate fighting abilities seen in animation. New technology created orange skin with white facial markings for the character. Blue-and-white montrals and lekku were made bigger and more realistic than before. Ariana Greenblatt watched many Clone Wars episodes to prepare for her flashback scenes. Natasha Liu Bordizzo trained for three months to fight with a lightsaber. She wore wigs dyed purple and orange for Sabine Wren's colorful hair. Mary Elizabeth Winstead spent around three hours getting green skin applied during initial tests. This duration eventually reduced to one hour per day. Lars Mikkelsen spent two-to-three hours daily in makeup for Grand Admiral Thrawn. His black hair was a wig because he lacked the right hairline for the character. Ray Stevenson died in May 2023 after completing his work on season one. Rory McCann replaced him in January 2025 for the second season.

  • Industrial Light & Magic used StageCraft virtual production technology developed for The Mandalorian. Filming took place on a volume set surrounded by circular LED video walls. Digital backgrounds displayed in real-time allowed for dynamic environments. Directors and cinematographers spent eight months creating previsualizations using virtual reality cameras. Production designers Andrew L. Jones and Doug Chiang returned from previous series. Costume designer Shawna Trpcic worked until she passed away shortly after the first season release. Legacy Effects created puppets and animatronics for the show. Lightsaber hilts connected to glowing tubes created interactive lighting on set. Batteries hidden within hilts improved upon earlier designs. The opening crawl featured red text and simpler formatting compared to main films. Traditional blue screen stages and outdoor locations supplemented the volume sets.

  • The story begins with Ahsoka Tano as a wandering rōnin similar to Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo. She joins forces with Sabine Wren to find Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn. They travel to another galaxy where Thrawn was stranded after Rebels ended. Ahsoka takes Sabine on as her Padawan learner despite their past separation. Sabine struggles with learning to use the Force because she lacks a strong connection. Baylan Skoll searches for power related to the Mortis gods to end cycles of destruction. He wields his lightsaber like a medieval knight wielding a claymore. Shin Hati trains under Baylan to become something more than a Jedi. Morgan Elsbeth allies with Thrawn using Nightsister witchcraft. The first season ends with Thrawn returning from the other galaxy. Ahsoka and Sabine remain stranded there while Thrawn leads the Empire against the New Republic.

  • Disney announced the first episode had 14 million views in its initial five days. It became the most watched title on Disney+ that week. Whip Media ranked Ahsoka as the highest or second-highest original streaming series weekly. Nielsen placed it second on lists for premiere and finale weeks. Rotten Tomatoes reported 85% of 269 critics gave positive reviews. Average rating reached 7.40 out of 10. Metacritic assigned a score of 68 based on 25 critics. Critics praised Rosario Dawson's performance and Ray Stevenson's work. Some found other performances stiff and pacing slow. The season won one Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award among six nominations. It also received an American Cinema Editors Award and Costume Designers Guild Award. Five Critics' Choice Super Awards followed, along with two Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Two People's Choice Awards and two Saturn Awards were awarded to the show.

  • Lucasfilm officially confirmed a second season in January 2024. Filoni wrote all eight episodes for this upcoming season. Bryce Dallas Howard directed two episodes while others handled remaining duties. Filming began the 28th of April 2025, in the United Kingdom. Marvel Comics announced an eight-issue comic book miniseries adapting the first season in February 2024. Rodney Barnes wrote the script with art by Steven Cummings and Georges Jeanty. The comic debuted that July. Walt Disney Records released soundtrack albums featuring Kevin Kiner's score. First volume came out September 15 and second on October 6. Filoni became chief creative officer at Lucasfilm in November 2023. He plans to make a film culminating interconnected stories of The Mandalorian spin-offs. This project will be made before his planned film concludes the saga.
